For the 20th anniversary of the second Hot Chip album, The Warning, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor initially connected as young teenagers in secondary school in southwest London in the early 90s. They bonded over being music obsessives, listening to a wide variety of genres, reading the music press, going to gigs together and eventually recording the songs they were writing. While they attended different universities, they continued to collaborate and officially formed Hot Chip in 2000. One of their early releases caught the attention of Moshi Moshi Records, who signed them to a deal. Their debut album, Coming on Strong, was released in 2004. Around this time, they developed a full band sound, adding other members, including Owen Clarke, Al Doyle, and Felix Martin. For their second album, they signed a deal with EMI Records. The Warning was eventually released in 2006. In this episode, Joe Goddard describes how Hot Chip's sound evolved over time as they began to embrace house music and develop a harder hitting style that was influenced by disco, hip hop and grime. As they were working on the album, they connected with James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA for a remix and found fellow like-minded musicians in the dance-punk revival that was emerging during this period. Goddard discusses how the limitations of home recording with Cubase software and vintage synthesizers like the Casio MT-70 helped inform their sound. Alexis Taylor discusses his love of singer/songwriter music, American indie rock, and 80s pop, which contrasted with but complimented the tracks that Goddard was putting together. As a duo, they developed their signature style where they would trade off singing and often sing together in unison using falsetto over a low register. Taylor also describes writing autobiographically and how a breakup around this time informed some of the reflective lyrics he was writing. From signing to a major label, to developing song ideas quickly, to expanding as a duo into a full band, to the stress of malfunctioning equipment in their live show, to taking inspiration from key artists like New Order, Prince, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin and ESG, to a Royal Trux album credit turning into a key line in “Over and Over”, to the enduring relatability of "Boy from School,” we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

LISTEN AGAIN, to the art of sound… Stream on demand from fbi.radio, podcast here. doseone & Height Keech – Wont Work [doseone Bandcamp] doseone & Height Keech – Twisted (Featuring Brian Ennals) [doseone Bandcamp] Following his brilliant album All Portrait, No Chorus with Steel Tipped Dove earlier in 2025, veteran alt.hip-hop mouth doseone swung right back into the swing of things with an EP produced entirely by Baltimore beatmaker Height Keech. Wood Teeth was laser-focused on the current moment, and its sequel (Wood Teeth II, natch) takes the same position – once more it’s about the descent of the USA into fascism, and it’s as “scathing” as the copy says. Dose is putting out some of the best work of his career, and the madcap sound of Height Keech certainly doesn’t hinder him. Marcus Whale – Dark Room [Blue Void/Bandcamp] Out now, the latest album from Eora/Sydney luminary Marcus Whale, who’s been a fixture on this show since his early experimental work as Scissor Lock, when he was a mere teenager, and throughout the brilliant releases of his duo Collarbones and trio Black Vanilla (among many others). Nether is, by my count, his 5th solo album, the first being his incredible statement of intent 10 years ago, Inland Sea, and it follows 2024’s club-fuelled blissout Ecstasy with the comedown, albeit no less energetic. There’s those traces of trance’s lysergic dancefloor tranceformation, pummeling kicks and (as heard here) jungle-like drum programming, ultra-processed breaks and percussion, and of course Marcus’s voice multi-tracked and harmonised. Beautiful. Facta – SLoPE VIP (ft Warrior Queen & Killa P) [Wisdom Teeth/Bandcamp] UK bass producer & one half of the Wisdom Teeth label, Facta, put out a slab of UK post-dubstep bass styles, from funky house to breakbeat techno, on last year’s GULP. Now he’s re-tooled the breakbeat track “SLoPE” with vocals from two UK dancehall/grime legends, Warrior Queen & Killa P. Wicked! Naga Kirana – Lumba2 [Glitterbeat/Bandcamp] Amsterdam collective Naga Kirana make a super-fun form of Indonesian electronic folk-pop, with gamelan percussion instruments, drum machines & synths, and the voice Inda Duran ensuring it’s catchy as heck. Looking forward to more from them! Waakya – Fire Song [Hospital Hill courtesy of The Wire] First recorded listen to the new cross-cultural collaboration Waakya comes in the latest edition of Wire Magazine’s Wire Tapper. The band centres around Yolŋu songman Daniel Wilfred & yidaki (didgeridoo) virtuoso David Wilfred, who you may know from Hand to Earth. They’re joined by sound wizard & guitarist Matthew McGuigan of label/production house Hospital Hill, modular synth virtuoso Ben Carey (also of Sumn Conduit) and legendary experimental turntablist (and acclaimed cardiologist!) Martin Ng. That’s a recipe for something extraordinary, as you’ll hear from these first sounds. The way the Wilfreds’ traditional music melds with experimental textures is always magical, here emerging from varispeed record crackle, guitar harmonics and other unidentified sounds. Expect more soon. Kee Avil – delay [NNA Tapes/Bandcamp] So Montréal experimental musician Kee Avil, with a couple of albums under her belt on Constellation, has this year teamed up with NNA Tapes to release a progressive album over the whole year, called Vapor. There’s one track going up per month, and the latest is the saturated quasi-80s electro-pop of “delay”. Each track so far is excellent and weird. Marie Delprat – Dust in my veins [-OUS/Bandcamp] Swiss label -OUS has been consistently hitting goals for some years now, with glitched electronics, post-classical fusion weirdness and various unconventional takes on song-based music. All those things converge on the first single from classically-trained Marie Delprat‘s EP What remains after desire, a quietly creepy piece of drone-pop. Marina Herlop – Jaque [Marina Herlop Bandcamp] Keeping with post-classical fusion weirdness, we join Catalan composer, pianist, singer & producer Marina Herlop for her third album Dja Dja, her first to be self-released (distributed by Barcelona label Lapsus & !K7, so the gorgeous-looking vinyl & CDs should be readily available). First single “Jaque” has everything Herlop is known for: classical-sounding piano, layered ecstatic folk vocals, syncopated rhythms. Keep an eye out for this one! Vanishing Twin – Bring Me The Axe [Fire/Bandcamp] Currently a trio, Vanishing Twin have made experimental pop music now for 11 years. Singer Cathy Lucas moved to rural France a year or two ago, so making music with ubiquitous drummer Valentina Magaletti and bassist Susumu Mukai aka Zongamin (who together are V/Z) became primarily an asynchronous affair of swapping files remotely. The title Archives is a reference to file-sharing and collaging from disparate sources, rather than describing an album of rarities or best of – it’s all new material. The band has always taken indie pop into realms of the experimental, with strong krautrock & dub vibes, but these new tracks are particularly adventurous, sounding precisely like three musicians in different locations coming together for a chimera of folk, electronic pop, dub, glitched trip-hop and radiophonic post-classical abstraction. I’m pumped to hear the rest of this album. Heyes – carlos serone – “folder for heyes (unfinished tape beats)” [Heyes’ Edits] [Ric/H Collective/Bandcamp] Heyes – Ang Watching ‘Pets on a Train’ on a Plane [Ric/H Collective/Bandcamp] Lochie – aka Heyes – is quite close to this show, and has filled in for me earlier this year as well as having broadcast on other stations. As an artist, his output is quite varied, but one strand of his art is the transformation of pre-existing music as well as field recording. Lochie has formed the Ric/H Collective with a group of like-minded musicians, writers & designers here in Eora, and first cab off the rank for the label arm is (here goes): rich; or, a mixtape of music about being “rich” and music not about being “rich”. The mixtape begins (and goes on) with a selection of Heyes Quickmixes of some familiar money-based pop songs, some mangled beyond recognition, some leaking their source material in odd ways, but slipped inside are some fellow travellers like carlos serone, whose lo-fi beats are edited by Heyes, and who also provided the liner notes. Intriguingly strange. Harrison Rae – Diss Track [Harrison Rae Bandcamp] From a notable Eora/Sydney gent now, Harrison Rae, who’s released electronic music as Beau Ambien and Henri O and is the convenor of Club Moss. His 2025 Mixtape is varied as a mixtape ought to be, from guitar tracks to murky electronics like “Diss Track”. Djrum – I Wander (IV) [Houndstooth/Bandcamp] Felix Manuel aka Djrum is one of the geniuses of the current age, adept at beats at any BPM, switching easily between techno, dubstep, jungle & beyond, but also inserting beautiful quasi-classical piano & cello passages, flutes with weird tunings, etc. Forthcoming EP I Wander is really one 15:44 track, but split into 6 parts reflecting its restless evolution throughout. I’m fortunate to have heard the whole thing already, and it’s as good as you’re expecting! Rydeen & SOVBLKPSSY – LESBIANISM [silkXS Bandcamp] Eora/Sydney duo Rydeen & SOVBLKPSSY follow up a 2-tracker from 2024 with their DONT TELL ANYONE EP, reflecting their influences across the bass & club spectrum, nodding at local sounds & history, thence building up from scratch a hardcore continuum of our own. In that vein, “LESBIANISM” is a Ry & Sov take on jungle, and a delight to hear. Plug – King Ring [De:tuned/Bandcamp] Once again Luke Vibert returns to his DAT archives to pull a full album’s worth of mid-’90s Plug material out for us to bathe in. When Vibert discovered jungle circa 1994, he was probably the one member of the IDM crew (Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, Squarepusher et al) who really understood how it worked, as club music, in relation to hip-hop and ragga dancehall, and in terms of break juggling. I love those other guys, but Plug was the real shit. At the time, Vibert only released a series of EPs and the classic Drum’n’Bass for Papa album (you can find them all digitally at Bleep and elsewhere), apart from a smattering of compilation tracks. As well as wicked drum programming, they exhibited Vibert’s talent for perfectly-sourced samples and melodic basslines & lead parts, all of which counts just as much for his hip-hop productions and the acid the makes up most of his material lately. Part of this is his sense of humour, and the “Papa” of the album’s title is Vibert’s grandfather Frank Vibert, a keen amateur magician, and while the photos of Vibert in Orientalist magician getup seem to have dried up, the title Variety Magic keeps up the connection. It should be noted that the Plug style of jungle/drill’n’bass was specific to the technology Vibert was using at the time, and even the Amen Andrews stuff that came out in 2003 has a different feel because he wasn’t producing the tracks the same way. So both the 2012 album Back on Time (which does sport his granddad on the cover) and this new album are collections of tracks from the mid-to-late ’90s. It’s insane that an 11 track album of tunes this good was lurking on DATs somewhere for decades. Morwell – Trust (A.Fruit Remix) [Morwell Bandcamp] Max Morwell has for the last 7+ years been exploring the music of bass & breakbeats that soundtracked many a rave, and he recently worked on some 160bpm tracks – incidentally the fairly standard BPM for jungle before it got more frenetic and morphed into drum’n’bass (a huge simplification). I heard Morwell’s originals a little while back and they’re excellent, but each track has been paired with an equally inspiring remixer. DJ Earl brings the Chicago connection – jungle vs footwork is a long-mined but no less fertile vein – while jungle/bass/IDM is represented by two women at the top of the board right now: Catherine Backhouse aka Xylitol, whose interest in pre-separation Yugoslavian electronica intersected with Morwell’s own Croatian heritage, and the ever-brilliant Spain-based Ukrainian producer A.Fruit. That makes Trust an epic release, and you’d be crazy to let it slip by. rush2theUnknown – Palenque (return to paradise) [Awkwardly Social/Bandcamp] A couple of excellent releases in 2024 introduced the New Zealand/Japan duo rush2theUnknown to the world, drawing on their background in NZ’s drum’n’bass & jungle scene, melded with the ancient future of vaporwave (well, to my ears anyway). Ancient / Future finds the duo in familiar territory, and it’s a joy. Pugilist – Rune [Samurai Music/Bandcamp] Hearing Naarm-based jungle/d’n’b head Pugilist on Samurai Music (again!) is a slight surprise until you realise that he’s as comfortable making clattering jungle as laser-focused drum’n’bass, bone-shuddering dubstep or who knows what else. So it feels like on Triads he’s nailed the latter-day tribal/minimalist d’n’b sound of Samurai, while still keeping the beat-juggling joys there. Much though I enjoy me some stripped-down Samurai hypno-beats, Pugilist’s got the skillz and intent to take it to another level. Topdown Dialectic – False LP A – 14 [False Aralia Bandcamp] With a longstanding connection with Brian Foote & Brion Brionson’s Peak Oil, the now slightly-less-mysterious US producer Topdown Dialectic returns after a 5 year gap with an album on False Aralia (also shepherded by Brian Foote), confirming it for those who didn’t know as the work of Izaak Schlossman, each of whose False Aralia releases blurred the definitions of artist vs album title vs… project? But it’s all of a piece with Topdown Dialect – that is, exploring various intersections of dub & bass with ambient, minimalism, glitch… the beats nod at micro-house, dub techno, but also percolated r’n’b. Where K Wata & others have recently found tracings of jungle in dub techno’s glitched edges, Schlossman’s works have lived in those liminal spaces, rummaging the low-tide wracks of the Basic Channel. The 16 tracks on the False LP, each cut to precisely 5 minutes, refuse to settle into any specific vein, moving from barely-there ambient dub to deeply rhythmic dub-funk that’s somehow entirely free of beats, desaturated exotica and deconstructed soul. It’s the washed-out future glimpsed behind the pulsating light of a near-death experience. The Bug & Dis Fig – Vanishing (Numbness Dub) [Pressure] Kevin Martin’s main project, The Bug, is back with a new singles series called Ladybug, in which one track is reworked in various ways – dubs, remixes, dubs of remixes etc. For “Vanishing”, Martin invites back his previous collaborator Dis Fig aka Felicia Chen, who has a new album of her own coming soon on Thrill Jockey which will knock the pants of you. This is a great, ethereal track, with a chugging bass and sparse rock beat under Chen’s trip-hoppy vocal. The original of the track is then treated to a “Vanished Dub”, with fragments of the vocal echoing through reverbed white noise, and then follows a “Numb Mix”, which is incredibly washed out, with the beat pared down to a kick and a wisp of a hi-hat – but the vocal remains intact. That version then gets a “Numb Dub”, which is beautifully dubbed out, like dub techno with a stomping martial kick. But the final “Numbness Dub” is the most tricked out with its dub delays – reminiscent of Martin’s minimalist trip-hoppy work with King Midas Sound crossed with the industrial dub of his Machines collection. Klara Lewis – Ta Min Hand [Editions Mego/Bandcamp] 5 years after the premature death of founder Peter Rehberg, the great Editions Mego label continues on, and Klara Lewis – who began her career with Mego in 2014 with the brilliant Ett, is releasing her next album Opening on the label in September. Lewis’s music can be an abstracted take on dance music forms, or abstracted mangling of acoustic sources, or rich, glitchy drone works. The first track, and first single, from Opening takes what sounds like loungey jazz and destroys it, pushing it into stuttered, clipped distortion, reversing it and so on. This is emblematic of Lewis’s approach to sound, somehow strongly emotive despite the abstraction. Violeta García & Hora Lunga – la ola or i miss u [-OUS/Bandcamp] The first album from the duo of Argentinian cellist Violeta García & Swiss musician Hora Lunga, I’ll wait for you in the car park, was a highlight of 2025. Due in September, its sequel 4ever is a continuation of the debut’s approach, in which the cello may sometimes take the foreground with melodic gestures or mini-orchestrations, but it can also be one distorted sound-source alongside heavy subs transplanted from the club, glitched samples, half-heard voices. On this first single, García’s cello plays a familiar heartstring-pulling role, but the track is slowly overtaken with distortion in a way not dissimilar to Klara Lewis’s techniques. Absolutely a highly anticipated album. Brady Cohan – Convincing [Brady Cohan Bandcamp] LA composer & guitarist Brady Cohan‘s music is mostly heard on TV & in film, but Everything That Matters is music from the heart, arising from the revelation that the things that really mattered were there with him & his family. Still, this music is cinematic in scope, taking his guitar through spectral drones and surging bass, and back home again. Marla Hlady & Christof Migone – It Takes Two [Crónica/Bandcamp] On And On And Off is the second collaboration between Canadian sound-artists Marla Hlady & Christof Migone released on the great Portuguese label Crónica. These two both combine the fine arts, conceptual arts, with sound-art: their previous duo album Swan Song takes its name from the swan necks of decommissioned beer stills, which formed part of a kinetic sculpture and also generated many of the sounds in their work. Along with the swan necks were the voices of the brewery staff, amplified through the sculpture. On And On And Off also collaborates with a choir of sorts – 12 people who were given 12 prompts, which asked them to record parts of their daily commute, and also describe them in particular ways (see the list of prompts here). Once again these recordings formed the starting matter for the album’s works. Listening to the murky sounds of “It Takes Two”, timestretched loops move in & out of phase, unidentifiable but suggestive of motion. There are short noise pieces, cut-up vocal syllables and an almost shoegazey rumbling ambient piece to finish. NEA Ensemble – CAMEDRIO [NEA Editions] Inside a farmhouse in the Murgia Materana national park, 5 hours’ drive south-east of Rome, a group of experimental musicians have formed the NEA Cultural Association, a collective aimed at promoting the creation of multidisciplinary cultural works in the intersection of electro-acoustic, experimental music, visual arts and popular traditions – outside of the urban centres they’re usually found in. You can read their manifesto here. ORIZZONTALE is the first release from their NEA Editions label, documenting an improvised performance from 12 musicians & artists, combining acoustic & electric instruments, live synths and electronics. Among the members is Andrea Taeggi, whose solo work I’ve featured under his own name and earlier as Gondwana on the great Opal Tapes, who also released his amazing duo Lumisokea. Unsurprisingly the music here leans more on live expression than intricate post-production, but the restraint of the musicians and the live processing make these pieces quite striking. Borguefül – La jeune fille bleue [Carton Records/Pagans/Bandcamp] French double bassist Mélanie Loisel released her debut album as Borguefül, Horst, in 2022 on Carton Records. Her follow-up, Vêtue, is again based around her double bass, enhanced with physical preparations, looping and processing, and forming a percussive base for her vocals. The first single begins with bowed notes and harmonics accompanying Loisel’s voice, but by 2 minutes in you notice a low rumbling, a bass drone with digital detritus, which takes over and then stays under the short, otherwise a capella vocal phrases. Doug Aitken's new installation Lightscape has just landed at the Shed in New York. It is many things at once: a seven-screen film, an immersive environment, and a stage for live performances. But at its heart is music. The work unfolds across multiple screens, following different characters as they move through desert scenes, freeways, and other landscapes in flux. What binds those worlds and narratives together is sound.  Aitken built Lightscape around an original song cycle he wrote. The soundtrack also incorporates compositions by Minimalist pioneers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Meredith Monk, performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Last week, the work opened with a live performance by Los Angeles Master Chorale—but they won't be the only musicians activating the installation. Upcoming performances will feature William Basinski, Suzanne Ciani, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. In that sense, Lightscape picks up on a thread that has long run through Aitken's practice.  One of his earliest works, Diamond Sea, was set against an ambient soundtrack featuring Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails, among other musicians. His 2012 project SONG 1, a moving-image work projected onto the facade of the Hirshhorn Museum, was built around the song “I Only Have Eyes for You.” And in 2013, for Station to Station, he staged a series of art happenings by transporting artists and musicians by train across America. In an art world that often prefers tidy categories and boundaries, Aitken has built a career out of collapsing them. His works have moved between film, sculpture, performance, and sound, asking viewers to not just look, but to listen, move, and gather. So the ambitious Lightscape felt like the perfect opportunity to speak with Aitken. In his conversation with culture editor, Min Chen, he opened up about working across disciplines, the communal power of live performance, and the role music has played in his life and practice. Aphir – Photokeratitis [Bird’s Robe Records/Bandcamp] Naarm’s Becki Whitton is many things: having been a guiding force behind sort-of record label Provenance Collective and mastermind of alternative top 100 for leftfield Australian music, The Wettest 100, professionally she’s a talented sound engineer, mixing & mastering many local pop & indie legends; and of course above all she’s a wonderful songwriter, producer, singer & improviser under the name Aphir. It’s been some time since the last Aphir album of songs with beats & stuff – for some time she’s been creating incredible ambient choral works with live looping & processing, some of which was released on The Halo is Shapeless in 2023. That album was released on Art As Catharsis – a very eclectic label, but best known for postrock & metal. Now Aphir’s new album Avarena is coming in September, and another Eora/Sydney postrock powerhouse, Bird’s Robe Records, is releasing it. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing it already, and it’s full of the kind of experimental electronic pop songs we’ve come to expect from Becki Whitton. Brian Ennals & Blockhead – Let it Burn (like Usher) [Phantom Limb/Bandcamp] Last time I had the pleasure of playing Baltimore rapper Brian Ennals, it was as part of a frankly astonishing opus in collaboration with Infinity Knives last year called A City Drowned in God’s Black Tears, mixing hip-hop with guitars’ acoustic strums & electric riffs, and a male gospel choir. NYC producer Blockhead is known – apart from the endless memes on his Instagram – for his extensive production work with Aesop Rock and more recently billy woods, two genius figures in rap – plus scads of solo work. Ennals more than easily stands in those shoes on *ahem* Boatshoes, the first single of which takes in in jazz loops and weird synths, with often-melodic rapping from Ennals. Keep an eye on this album, due out on July 17th. Basic Rhythm & NyNy – Vibez [Sneaker Social Club/Bandcamp] Basic Rhythm – No Future [Sneaker Social Club/Bandcamp] Anthoney Hart’s Basic Rhythm is generally his take on drum’n’bass, albeit always a little off-centre, rhythms shifted in some way. But his latest for the great bass label Sneaker Social Club is titled 8 Bar Techno. So is it techno? Well… kinda? It definitely starts that way, the title track sporting gun reloads & shots accenting its 4/4 thump. It’s definitely bass music though, and half of it I would suggest is grime – a highlight is NyNy‘s collaboration, “Vibez”, with more of those gun cocks. And then “No Future” has the 4/4 pulse and techno tempo, and that syncopated bassline… With Eklipse the mix empties out for a dubstep/grime feel, and sword slices replacing the guns. Only when the album closes on “Ice Cold” do we get hints at drum’n’bass, and even then what it really is a kind of grime-techno-electro stomp. Excellent. Sourdure – Le Pebre (feat. Lisà Langlois) [Murailles Music/Bandcamp] Ernest Bergez, of experimental electronic duo Kaumwald and various bands in various genres, continues his Sourdure project this year with a new album, Outredore, coming in September. With Sourdure, arcane pagan themes are modernised with electronic processing and synths, with lyrics in the Auvergnat dialect of the regional French language Occitan – which is closer to Catalan than French, and was the traditional language of many troubadors in ages past. As much as it draws on the folk music of central France, there are Arabic melodies flowing through these songs, and electronic pulses and tones. The first single features additional vocals from Lisà Langlois of the band Bòsc and collective La Crue, based also in the Massif Central of France. Jesse Draxler – Traap Number 9 ft. Lord Spikeheart & Hybrid Intuition [RIP ID] LA-based visual artist, filmmaker & musician Jesse Draxler released the first single from his upcoming album/project Tongue of Angels a few weeks ago, featuring hardcore punk/hip-hop duo Ho99o9. Here’s the second one now, with two big names from the Kenyan underground: Martin Kanja aka Lord Spikeheart, who works with heavy electronics and was half of grindcore band Duma, and guitarist/producer/futurist Hybrid Intuition. Draxler is primarily a visual artist as far as I know, but whether this is his music or more curation, it’s good stuff! Artilect – Flames (Featuring Miss Ria) [Weaponist/Bandcamp] One of the most consistently exciting drum’n’bass/jungle producers of the last while is Dylan Blythin aka Artilect, who’s often been associated with the Samurai folks but has always tended to have a junglist’s sense of rhythmic complexity shot through the d’n’b cyberpunk battering ram. And that neon, rain-soaked darkness is present on Reptile, his latest EP on Homemade Weapons‘ Weaponist label – to my ears there’s a lot of Dom & Roland here (high praise). dgoHn – Waiting For [Planet µ/Bandcamp] Here are two tastes that sure go well together – the first release by drumfunk genius dgoHn (aka John Cunnane) on Planet µ! Tessares really is vintage dgoHn, with the melodic focus of label boss µ-Ziq – and dgoHn did have an album with Macc on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label (digital available here), so IDM isn’t exactly foreign to his style of drum’n’bass. But the beats are impeccable & inventive too, of course. Highly recommended. Mantra, Decibella & Tim Reaper – Force 32 [RuptureLDN/Bandcamp] Force 32 is the third collaboration between three huge forces for the jungle revival in the UK: (DJ) Mantra, who co-founded RuptureLDN with her husband Double O, as club nights and a label (who released this EP); Decibella, herself a busy jungle & drum’n’bass DJ, and Ed Alloh aka Tim Reaper, the hardest working guy in jungle, albeit now on a break from his collaborative releases on Future Retro London. The previous installments can be found on Tim Reaper’s label and on FABRICLIVE, and this may be the best of the lot – just really good jungle as it should be done. Shhau – Bedrock [SFX/Bandcamp] Fresh on Zoë Mc Pherson‘s SFX is an album from Armenian musician & bass music producer Shhau. This is music that moves comfortably between bass music genres and tribal, percussive techno – as such it would be perfectly suited to the YUKU label, but very much fits with Mc Pherson’s aesthetic too. I love the way this is a really solid drum’n’bass tune until it pummels its way into something more techno-y. Bios Contrast & Nilotpal Das – Iron Age Fantasies [Bios Contrast Bandcamp/Universal Broadcast] Bios Contrast & Nilotpal Das, Seraphim, Susu Laroche, BROOD – Escape [Bios Contrast Bandcamp/Universal Broadcast] Bios Contrast & Nilotpal Das is the usual way that Nilotpal Das refers to his music-making, although there are many more variations! He’s an incredibly prolific producer, with new tracks going up on Bandcamp more than weekly – and there’s Bios Contrast and Brahmancore at least to follow. These two tracks are from an honest-to-goodness album that’s even released in a limited CD edition from US distributor Universal Broadcast (with impossibly expensive shipping, natch). Sounds from the S.P.E.A.K.E.R System also extends Das’s love of collaboration, with a whole host of artist joining in. On the second track here we have vocals from French-Egyptian cross-media artist Susu Laroche, and additional production from Seraphim and BROOD. We’re talking crazy glitchy beats, sometimes edging into breakcore or speedcore territory. Brahmancore. KK NULL – Quantum Pulsation X_000005 [KK Null Bandcamp] Kazuyuki Kishino, usually known as KK NULL or Null, is one of the most recognized, long-lasting noise & experimental musicians in Japan. Since the early 1980s he’s made noise rock, hardcore punk and industrial, and collaborated with scads of artists from across the spectrum, but for decades as well he’s made mind-melting electronic music. Even if there are elements of dub, techno or other genres, his music remains sui generis. On his Bandcamp you’ll find a host of different series, albums grouped around particular concepts, this particular recent one being Quantum Pulsation X – and it’s not actually the tenth Quantum Pulsation, but rather an extended riff on an earlier work I guess. The complexity of rhythm and noise reflects the complexity of thought that Null puts into everything he does. A fascinating assault on the senses. Architectural – Psychedelic Dancefloor Visions [Delsin Records/Bandcamp] Better known as Reeko, Spain’s Juan Rico has made thumping minimal techno for many years, and in the last few years branched out into drum’n’bass and 170BPM beats, mainly for Samurai Music. His long-established Architectural alias turned up a couple of years back on R&S Records, and has continued as an outlet for the lighter stuff. Here we have some blissfully head-noddy deep techno. Kirk Barley – Ecstatic [Marionette/Bandcamp] We’ve heard Kirk Barley a lot on this show under his own name and as the Church Andrews half of Church Andrews & Matt Davies. In that pairing, Barley’s sinuous yet precise modular synthesis interacts with Davies’ complex (and precise!) drumming patterns, and it’s interesting hearing on forthcoming album Arc that Barley’s solo synth work retains a lot of that rhythmic quirkiness – although to be fair, Matt Davies appears on a number of tracks, including this one. The oddly-tuned synths and hard-to-pin-down rhythms make for a beautifully strange listening experience. dprk – Blutsuppe [Studio Fabrik/Bandcamp] dprk – Aksak-Turm [Studio Fabrik/Bandcamp] I continue to appreciate the super-weird work of Eora/Sydney experimental trio dprk, made up of Richard Fielding (Loop Orchestra, early Severed Heads), Nick Dan (of noise obscurists xNoBBQx) and Juke Wyat (also recently of Loop Orchestra). Gnomes of Zürich is their ostensibly krautrock excursion, although a lot of the aesthetics of that loose genre have inhabited their mix of psych, noise and synth oddness. The two short vignettes here have a strange affinity with the more de-genred aspects of Mike Paradinas’ µ-Ziq and his one-off collaboration with Jochen Paap aka Speedy J, Slag Boom Van Loon. Lord Tusk – Opposites Attract [do you have peace?/Bandcamp] Dawuna – Anything [do you have peace?/Bandcamp] From do you have peace?, the label run by Bristol minimalist bass/trip-hop mavericks Jabu, a highly recommended compilation raising money for on-the-ground organisations in Lebanon, Congo, Palestine, Iran & Sudan. And this is a seriously stacked compilation, ranging from the more ambient side of this scene’s productions to the dub-influenced weirdness of, for instance, Lord Tusk and the minimalist, obscured r’n’b digi-funk of Ian Mugerwa’s Dawuna, who I loved in his early incarnation as Ot to, not to. Helen Svoboda – If [Room40/Bandcamp] Helen Svoboda – Evening Hepuli (feat. Selma Savolainen) [Room40/Bandcamp] Naarm-based Finnish-Australian double bassist is an artist who truly defies categorisation, as you may have noted if you’ve been listening to this show for a while. Adept as a jazz double-bassist, she has also developed many extended techniques on her instrument, and is a master at the melodic use of stopped harmonics (heard in last year’s debut from the TL;DR quartet and 2024’s Anatomical Heart collaboration). Svoboda’s last solo album, 2023’s The Odd River, is a collection of assorted songs, on which Svoboda is joined by many brilliant Australian jazz players, but the music covers folk and classical – and in fact the album is one part of a film work Svoboda made with Angus Kirby (I’m not sure there’s any way to watch it online though). Now the follow-up, Headwater, has been released by the great Room40, showcasing songs & compositions mostly created from Svoboda’s double bass & voice, and co-produced by Tilman Robinson, whose electronics also wrap around many of the works. There are a few collaborators, and notably the voice of acclaimed Finnish singer Selma Savolainen can be found throughout. It’s a stunner. Kalia Vandever – Tough Play [International Anthem/Bandcamp] New York-based trombonist Kalia Vandever plays an instrument that’s a little unusual in jazz as a lead instrument, but is also a talented ensemble player and a great composer & songwriter. Their last solo album, last year’s Another View, was made with a guitar/bass/drums backing band featuring the brilliant Mary Halvorson, but follow-up Mana is entirely performed by themself. There are electronic textures blending with the sound of multi-tracked trombones, and there are also songs, bearing the influence of Vandever’s Hawaiian heritage. There’s something homely about “Tough Play”, with simple piano chords, trombone lurking underneath and Vandever’s clear voice. Just beautiful. Mara – Air Leak feat. Benjamin Woods [Pure Space/Bandcamp] fbi.radio broadcaster, curator, violist, composer, sound-artist Mara Schwerdtfeger returns to the also-fbi-affiliated Pure Space with a two track release. At the time of broadcast the first track was available, based around the single note playable on her great-grandfather’s flute, with additional flautation from Naarm’s Benjamin Woods. The very breathy tones are warming but slightly unsettling, joined at intervals by sub bass pings. Seabuckthorn – Mumbo Jumbo [Lost Tribe Sound/Bandcamp] When we first heard Andy Cartwright’s Seabuckthorn, the project was a showcase for his incredible fingerstyle guitar picking, a brilliant take on American Primitive from an artist based in the UK. There were hints even then of other tendencies bubbling under – shoegazey bowed guitars, field recordings. In the meantime, both under his own name and as Seabuckthorn, Cartwright has taken his art in many different directions, including sound-collage and electronic elements. On this track, we have an arrhythmic collage of percussive sounds which eventually coalesces into a cyclic rhythm, with string drones and a few select notes from Phil Cassel’s double bass (he’s one of two guests on the album, along with Lost Tribe Sound regular William Ryan Fritch). Ben Shemie – I See You Too [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] Bint Mbareh – one’s own third harmonic on a rusted sewage pipe [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] Following January’s brilliant compilation Gaza Is The Moral Compass (and it still is), Portland, OR label Beacon Sound offer Flowers Not Bombs, once again featuring artists associated with Montréal’s Constellation label such as cellist Rebecca Foon, Ben Shemie of SUUNS, as well as Lost Tribe Sound’s William Ryan Fritch, cellist/sound-artist Nick Storring, International Anthem & WeJazz-associated percussionist Booker Stardrum – plus Lebanese composer Youmna Saba, Palestinian sound-artist Bint Mbareh, Iranian composer & sound-artist Rouzbeh Shadpey and many more. Shemie’s piece features his high, vocoded voice with beautifully orchestrated strings, while Mbareh’s echoey piano gradually succumbs to sound manipulation, stretching and reversing until its brief piano coda. All profits of this beautiful compilation go to two very worthy on-the-ground organisations: Arab Group for the Protection of Nature and Palestinian Teacher Creativity Center. Félicia Atkinson – Les Yeux IV [VIERNULVIER Records/Bandcamp] Félicia Atkinson – Sans Visage V [VIERNULVIER Records/Bandcamp] I was lucky to perform at the brilliant dunk!festival last year with my band Black Aleph, a festival in Europe’s best-kept secret, the lovely northern-Belgium city of Ghent. Specifically, the festival occurs in a few theatres and venues around an arts centre / platform / community called VIERNULVIER (404), which itself has a phenomenally-curated boutique record label. Having discovered the excellent Antwerp-based musician Youniss through the label earlier this year, I was pleased to see a familiar name in Félicia Atkinson appearing on the label. This album, Sans Visage, was a commissioned by VIERNULVIER for their Videodroom series. It’s spooky music, not particularly redolent of evil but very atmospheric, and simply as sound-art, the maniupated piano and guitar, the organ and voicelike drones and the quite avant-garde harmonies are beautiful, and evoke a soundtrack from years ago, glitchily transmitted from a long-lost archive. TC PODCAST W/ MIRIAM MONDSHEIN Born and raised in West Germany, Miriam Mondshein got in touch with music already at the age of 3 by the sound of The Cure, and found her passion for experimental sounds in her early teens when Tool released their album “Lateralus” and bands like Nine Inch Nails had their peak. Influenced by artists like Aphex Twin and Massive Attack, it was no surprise she developed a favour for electronic music and discovered techno at age 12. What started as a hobby quickly developed into way more than just collecting music - it became her only rescue from daily struggles and the reason for Miriam to move to Berlin in 2007, where she became a part of the scene quickly and got blessed by the golden Berghain times. Marcel Dettmann's raw bouncy grooves and Ben Klock's hypnotic minimalism educated her hearing and shaped the perfect bridge to the warm dryness of classy raw UK techno and garage beats. To this day, those influences are strong characteristics in her mixes and productions. As DJ, producer, and painter, Miriam Mondshein integrates her synaesthesia as a tool to create psychedelic moods in both of her artistic practices equally. The ability to see sound enables her to combine grooves and trippy rhythms from different genres with contemporary techno sound, an old school spirit, and a huge love for B-side digging. Mind-twisting, mantra-like vocal snippets and atmospheric loops define her signature sound - inviting the crowd to a meditative state on the dance floor, while the necessary pressure is delivered by full bass lines, rich kick drums, and just the right amount of distortion to add an accent of rawness to the vibe. Jungle turning up in the darndest places tonight, as is… saxophone? Jazz stretched to its limits, and electronica during wartime… LISTEN AGAIN in the darndest places – stream on demand from fbi.radio, podcast here. Butthole Surfers – Imbuya [Sunset Blvd] Never thought I’d be playing Butthole Surfers on Utility Fog. Not that they weren’t an impeccably experimental punk/noise band in their earlier days. Not that Gibby Haines didn’t do the greatest impromptu guest spot ever on Ministry’s “Jesus Built My Hotrod“. Not that “Pepper” isn’t a classic ’90s alt.rock/trip-hop crossover hit. But still, they haven’t been active for a long while, so it’s altogether a surprise that they’ve decided to release their “long lost” follow-up to Electric Larryland, the album that featured “Pepper”. For various reasons – label shenanigans etc – it wasn’t released in the form they wanted, with some songs reworked on the eventual next album Weird Revolution. Fans have known about The Last Astronaut, and heard leaked copies for decades, but now we’re getting it proper-like, and whaddayaknow, the second song they give us is alt rock/industrial punk with amen breaks, because jungle will never die. The break gets pretty nicely tweaked in the middle 8, while the guitar chugs along like a sped-up track from that Ministry album. Picastro – Fell The Family Tree [We Are Busy Bodies/Bandcamp] Liz Hysen’s band Picastro has been going for a very long time – since 1998 – with a changeable lineup that’s usually left-of-centre, featuring viola or cello (Hysen herself plays violin), with various luminaries of the Toronto scene involved, including Owen Pallett and Nick Storring. Hysen’s songs are often dark & creepy, often uncomfortably intimate, and the strings may be used atonally as often as they’re beautiful. It’s true to say that while every Picastro song sounds like Picastro, every Picastro album is different, and their forthcoming Double On Time may be more electronic, based on this lovely – and yes, creepy – first single “Fell The Family Tree”. Notable for us here at Utility Fog, the album is co-produced by Tim Condon of Fresh Snow, whose debut as Mirrored Silver Sea was a UFog fave in 2008, and who moved from Melbourne to Toronto not long after it was released. It’s great to hear his many contributions here alongside Liz Hysen’s singular vision. Carl Gari – Swim feat. Polygonia [Molten Moods/Bandcamp] Most of us know German band Carl Gari from their incredibly strong albums made with Egyptian singer/trumpeter/poet/composer Abdullah Miniawy, on AD93 and Amphibian Records. Between those two releases, the band & singer released a live album on Molten Moods, and it’s to that label that Carl Gari now return for their self-titled album, forthcoming in June. This choppy beats of the second single are joined by multi-tracked vocals from Munich-based Polygonia, herself a producer of bass & other dancefloor music. james K – On God (Roza Terenzi Remix) [AD93/Bandcamp] Following her vaporwave-trip-hop album Friend from last year, james K now reaches out for some heavy-duty Friends to remix the album. Roza Terenzi is Katie Campbell, originally from Perth, then Melbourne, now Europe, also one third of trip-hop band trickpony. She takes the jangly indie song “On God” and dubs it out with vocal delays and chunkier beats – one of the best remixes of the set. Lyra Pramuk – Ending (Djrum Endless Rework) [7K/Bandcamp] The remix has in a sense always been at the heart of the work of operatically & classically-trained composer & producer Lyra Pramuk, whether it’s sampling and processing her own voice, or commissioning huge remix compilations as on 2021’s Delta. Last year she started her own label pop.soil, but simultaneously joined 7K (!K7‘s classical/ambient imprint that they’re back-referencing as 7Klassik), releasing the beautiful Hymnal in June. In June this year comes Hymnal (Resung), in which her voice and the strings of Sonar Quartett are remixed by seven of her colleagues – and who better than the classical-tuned beatmaster Djrum as the first to be released? dgoHn – I Couldn’t Remember So I Made Something Up [Planet µ/Bandcamp] Here are two tastes that sure go well together – the first release by drumfunk genius dgoHn (aka John Cunnane) on Planet µ! SPECIAL REQUEST – Uncanny Valley (gyrofield remix) [Timedance/Bandcamp] When techno/tech house mainstay Paul Woolford unveiled his Special Request alter ego in 2012 with a series of 12″s and remixes, it was revolutionary not just for Woolford but for the nascent jungle revival, representing a new take on the ’90s jungle revolution, and pre-empting the still-current jungle revival by at least a couple of years (well it depends how you count it – Sully’s Blue double EP was 2014, despite the Bandcamp date). As you know, Woolford has used Special Request for all music of the hardcore continuum by now, but for Batu’s Timedance he’s dropped a piece of hardcoreish drum’n’bass. It’s backed by two remixes: Metrist‘s bass heavy slow-fast take and gyrofield‘s more abstracted weird-jungle. Weird dancefloors unite! los pulpitos – ii ii ii [Crammed Discs/Bandcamp] los pulpitos – Archipelago [Crammed Discs/Bandcamp] Since the early ’80s Belgian label Crammed Discs has been the home for postpunk and world music of all sorts as well as quite a lot of electronica. Techno & electronica producer Dirk Leyers here teams up with Felipe Salmon of Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue under the name los pulpitos (the little octopuses). Their debut EP Octopean Union from last year was a lovely piece of underwater electronica, combining techno & acid vibes with friendly drum’n’bass/jungle and those South & Central American percussive forms that Dengue Dengue Dengue nurtured. The new album Tentacletek is similarly-formed and both are absolutely lovely, just the right combo of dreamy & danceable. Appleblim – Thunderstorm [Sneaker Social Club/Bandcamp] Laurie Osborne as Appleblim was a key figure in the outward dissemination of dubstep with the Skull Disco label he ran with Sam Shackleton, twisting dubstep’s template to include technoid rhythms. Since then both artists’ oeuvres have turned sideways into other realms, but Appleblim’s always cleaved closer to the dancefloor. Here he’s joined with Sneaker Social Club for a third time, with melodic, hardware-driven rave tracks that float somewhere between drum’n’bass, 2-step, dubstep, weightless and some kind of acidic disco. Always brilliant. Rob Smith – Revolve (feat Tony Wrafter) [RSD Bandcamp] Here’s an unusual project for Rob Smith of Bristol trip-hop originals Smith & Mighty and junglists More Rockers. As RSD, Smith has also made forays into dubstep, indeed since early in the genre’s nascence, as well as dub more broadly. The makers of the underground film Urtobēn – Vienna’s illegal Artforms (more about graffiti and parkour activities than music itself) clearly felt RSD’s urban music styles suited the film’s aesthetic, and now he’s released the soundtrack on his Bandcamp, with tracks from many of his projects and a few fellow travellers. The previously-unreleased (I think!) jungle track I played tonight features trumpeter Tony Wrafter, a longtime Smith & Mighty fellow traveller, who’s also worked a lot with the On-U Sound stable. Ital Tek – Kill Switch [Planet µ/Bandcamp] I first played Alan Myson’s music as Ital Tek in 2007, pretty early in the dubstep’s expansion out from East London. He’d made a bit of breakcore/IDM before this, but his dubstep was quickly picked up by Mike Paradinas’ Planet µ, with all four tracks on the Blood Line EP certified bangers. He moved into a more purple phase, and via various other styles – some more ambient, some more industrial – we arrive at Mind Abandon. Here Myson is taking a bit more of a hardware approach, and again is mixing ambient with some more post-industrial expression, not exactly IDM or dubstep but not entirely separate either – especially the track I played tonight goes from punishing industrial bass into cyberpunk ambient synthesis. I’ve found for years now that Ital Tek albums don’t initially grab me, then I come back to them after a bit and I’m like What? This is fucking great. And yeah, this is great. An underrated talent, honestly. Jensen Interceptor – Flux Entrance [Peder Mannerfelt Produktion] Sydney-born producer Jensen Interceptor now finds himself based in Stockholm, so it makes sense that his last couple of EPs have been released by Pedder Mannerfelt‘s Produktion. Synthetic Seduction is definitely “future bass”, aimed squarely at the dancefloor; straightforward enough, but melodic and super bouncy. Rodja – Ajam (Version) [XCPT/Bandcamp] Pietro De Ruggieri is a producer from Mantera in Italy, releasing music as Rodja, which suggests a particularly Aussie pronunciation of “Rodger”, but presumably isn’t. De Ruggieri has spent some time in Tehran, and some of the music on his new album Third Force was produced there. It’s a phenomenal set of dub techno and other dubby bass music, with slippery production but emphatic beats, beautifully textured. Recommended. Paperclip Minimiser – TT A1 [Blank Mind/Bandcamp] Speaking of pitch-perfect updated dub techno, John Howes’ Paperclip Minimiser has the goods. This is far more ascetic than Rodja, a sound that will be familiar if you checked out Howes’ second album on Peak Oil a few weeks ago. Brilliant. Ptastvo – Bowls With Souls [I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free/Bandcamp] Ukrainian label I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free (based, with its progenitors, in Berlin since Russia’s war) here brings an album from Volodymyr Ponikarovskyi aka Ptastvo, who uses found sounds along with electronics and musical instruments to evoke the feeling of imbalance and the heightened emotions of living in wartime. It’s impressively varied music, and even at its most electro-acoustic (e.g. the literal metal bowls sampled on “Bowls With Souls”) it retains a connection to dance music, or at least music with beats. Quite an epic journey, one to listen to on a nighttime drive perhaps – or lie back and listen on headphones wherever you are. Bobby Ingham – Easy Mush [Sneaker Social Club/Bandcamp] Bobby Ingham – I Feel So Good I Swear I Could Fly [Sneaker Social Club/Bandcamp] On Angel of the North, released on Low End Activist‘s Sneaker Social Club, Leeds-born interdisciplinary artist Bobby Ingham echoes the label boss’s excavation of his Oxford council estate origins, featuring Ingham’s grandmother and Ingham’s own spoken word, with spookily discordant synths and fragmented rhythms tracing a skeleton of UK bass music, from grime to r’n’b-laced trip-hop. Berndt / Schmidt – Gecko Lazzaro [Thrill Jockey/Bandcamp] Drew Daniel, one half of Matmos, is quite prolific outside of the beloved duo, with a varied solo career as The Soft Pink Truth as well as various collaborations. It’s less common to hear solo or other non-Matmos music from Drew’s partner Martin M.C. Schmidt, so the new album Cloud Machines, which finds Schmidt working with Baltimore experimental mainstay John Berndt, should make us sit up and listen. The humour and weirdness of Matmos is very much present, but its exploratory sound – from the first couple of singles – takes in Krautrock studio experimentation, postpunk out-rock and any other leftfield musical non-traditions. Harrington, Jaffe, Shiroishi – FRACTAL HASH [AKP Recordings/Bandcamp] Via LA label AKP Recordings, Making Colors is the second improvised wonder from three talented musicians who work comfortably across genres. Dave Harrington may be best known for his collaboration with Nicolas Jaar, Darkside, Max Jaffe for the art rock/avant-pop of JOBS and drumming in Amirtha Kidambi’s Elder Ones, and Patrick Shiroishi for his solo saxophone & sound-art as well as hardcore punks The Armed, contemporary music ensemble Wild Up and much more. This spontaneous music can sound like postrock at one time, then free jazz or psychedelic noise, or ambient, all filtered through electronic processing. Rad. Adam Schatz – A Voice Screaming All Aboard (feat. Carmen Quill) [Jealous Butcher Records/Bandcamp] Speaking of jazzers in smudged genres, Adam Schatz is a saxophonist and keyboard player who’s played with prominent indie artists like Japanese Breakfast, This Is The Kit and many others, and his Civil Engineering Vol. 1 is an enjoyable selection of melodic jazz made even better with the double bass of Carmen Quill on most tracks, and Dawn of Midi drummer Qasim Naqvi on a couple too. Purelink & Rainy Miller – Barrons Hotel (I, To, Thee.) [Fixed Abode] Arriving with no fanfare or explanation is this 2-tracker from Manchester producer/singer/iconoclast Rainy Miller, on his Fixed Abode imprint, collaborating with US electronica trio Purelink. Gorgeous smeared electronics with Rainy Miller’s typically morose, yet cutting, work. Listen again — ~222MB

The newest XL signing delivers 60 minutes of blistering explorations across the hardcore continuum. Don't expect KAVARI to take anything too seriously. The Glasgow-based artist thrives on contradiction: a pop-adjacent instinct colliding with a love of discomfort, abrasion and noise. After years of releasing independently, 2026 marks a new chapter with PLAGUE MUSIC, her debut on XL, out in February. But her instincts remain the same: push harder, strip things back, make it stranger. It comes as little surprise, then, that she's earned the support of fellow mould-breakers like Aphex Twin, Ethel Cain and Hudson Mohawke. Of her RA Mix she shrugs: "I honestly don't remember making it." That irreverence is audible: disembodied voices mutter club-floor mantras, as she drags grime, drum & bass and dubstep through distortion, friction and collapse. If that all sounds chaotic, well, that's kind of the point. The aim is to unsettle but o nce you find your footing, RA.1022 reveals itself as genuinely thrilling dance music, far removed from convention. Guitarist/composer/improviser Shane Parish is about to release a truly astounding project, Autechre Guitar. The Athens, Georgia-based guitarist has transcribed and recorded an entire album of acoustic guitar arrangements featuring the music of electronic music duo Autechre. This is no small feat. Autechre's atmospheric compositions were made with layered synths and drum machines. Shane has somehow distilled them to their essence and arranged them for solo guitar. Best of all, they sound great. On the podcast, we hear all about this Mt. Everest of a project, the Taylor 214-GE he used for the task, Shane's background as an arranger and so much more. In 2006, when the borders of progressive house were starting to blur and music started melting into the digital sphere, Balance 010 arrived with almost monastic ambition. It can feed your soul, brighten your day, or just counterpoint the din of the everyday. Dusty Henry, in his new book for 33 1/3's GENRE series, focuses upon 20TH CENTURY AMBIENT. The book looks at early and unexpected influences like Erik Satie and Blind Willie Johnson. It highlights leading artists of the form like Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Laraaji, Suzanne Ciani, and Hiroshi Yoshimura. It also touches upon artists like Wendy Carlos and Aphex Twin whose relationship to the genre is only part of their identity. Telepathic Fish co-founder DJ Food, aka one part of Openmind, takes us on a trip into the world of 90s chill out. Strictly Kev likes the company of plants whilst working on music so that's handy for us isn't it?! We're assuming he's talking about a beautiful Calathea sitting in the corner for inspiration, tho his dream plant setup - a conservatory packed with Romanesco broccoli, trippy Caladiums, and Persian Shields - is something we'd be well on board with too. Enough of the plant talk for a second and back to the music, ambient music to be clear. For those that weren't squatting in South London back in the early 90s, Openmind were the four-piece behind the mighty Telepathic Fish - the legendary ambient afterparty that transformed chill-out rooms from dub-playing afterthoughts into proper destinations. Kev, along with Chantal Passamonte (Mira Calix, RIP), David Vallade, and Mario Aguera, started in a shared house above a shop with no neighbours to complain/bash the door down. What began as art school parties quickly grew into Sunday afternoon sessions in squatted venues - a former dole office in Brixton and even the derelict Roundhouse on New Year's Day. They hosted everyone from Aphex Twin to Mixmaster Morris among wall-to-wall mattresses, UV installations, and  Coldcut's Matt Black with his boundary pushing video projections. The idea was simple: recreate that post-clubbing comedown vibe but on a massive scale, as an "aural and visual blanket" for club-rattled minds. They even published a fanzine called Mindfood and worked at the scene's hub, Ambient Soho record shop, helping shape what Simon Reynolds called a "wombeldelic sound-and-light bath" in contrast to the current trend of hardcore and it's relentless assault. Thirty years on, that spirit's having a comeback. Also handily 30 years on the Openmind crew have just compiled the first-ever Telepathic Fish retrospective for Fundamental Frequencies - a double vinyl love letter to those hazy early-90s mornings when the music finally slowed down. For this Seeds Mix, Kev has leaned into his love of minimalism and systems music - repetition built from layers of loops offset against each other to form subtle polyrhythms. There's a deliberate avoidance of drum machines here in favour of organic percussion, and around the eight-minute mark, a section from Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia that captures the feeling of being deep in the forest, phone abandoned, discovering that paradise was just a forage away. Beginning his journey behind the decks long before stepping into production, DJ sets display a reflect a deep well of knowledge and experience. With such an intense output of 5 albums in 3 years it was time to take a long earned rest and consider new sonic avenues, developing new ideas and adopting different sound palettes and production techniques. In the age of over-information and over-exposure what control do we have over our public persona? It's all about the personality, all about our profile, incessant, endless posts to every medium we can lay our hands on. After 25 years of DJing around the world,  the catchily title |-...-.|  seems like they've had enough of all that and switched to the exact opposite and put together a project with no real name, no real public persona or much else besides. But it's been getting noticed by the right people - Joe Muggs featured them twice in Bandcamp Daily this year, and their latest album "Deliveroo Studio Séances" is the piece that really caught our ear. "This is all about music being judged on its merit rather than ego or identity, transcending the audiences potential preconceptions and focusing on a sonic and visual journey. " The sound pulls from various places - you can hear bits of Aphex Twin, Burial, Daft Punk, and Weatherall in there. It's genre-fluid stuff that doesn't fit neatly into boxes, which is probably why the likes of Trevor Jackson and Prosumer have been supportive. The whole anonymous angle means the music has to speak for itself, which it seems to be doing. So it feels kind of counterintuitive to ask them any questions for this rather tasty mix they've put together of original material, intermingled with other beauties. But we'll do it anyway, hey. Ian McMillan's guests are the Scottish Makar Peter Mackay, Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison, as well as Indian dancer and poet Tishani Doshi, and the musician Scanner.Scanner lets us into the baffling and mysterious 'poetry' of album titles by Autechre, Aphex Twin and other electronic music artists.
