No one has a perfect life. We each have negative experiences from our past that have helped shape the person we are today. There is a difference, however, in how we respond to those tough challenges. Some people allow those circumstances to define them, and they can never seem to move past them. Others are able to change their perspective and use difficulties to strengthen them and propel them into the future. I’ll let you guess which category best describes today’s guest. As a teenager, Michael Arterberry was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him overcome adversities and set high expectations for his future. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping people navigate the difficulties of life and launch their future into motion. For more than 25 years, he has been helping teens and adults use what they have gone through as a catalyst for success rather than an obstacle for failure. Michael is the author of Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement, a daily motivational book. Additional information about his struggles as a child and a debilitating spinal cord injury as an adult can be found in his wife's book, God Was Holding My Hand. **Please be advised that a brief sexual assault/molestation reference occurs in this episode. If you are triggered by this, please check for details about skipping over it as you listen. A positive mindset Is it possible to overcome extreme difficulties and develop a positive mindset? The answer is YES! Despite a horrific childhood, Michael was determined to create a positive mindset. A big part of that was his relationship with God, and in addition, athletic endeavors became his respite. He didn’t think of playing sports as “therapy” at the time, but that’s what took place as he reflects on his years in school. He played basketball, baseball, football, and soccer, and he was able to channel all of his energy from his family challenges to “play like a wild man.” Having a healthy outlet for his frustrations helped fuel his positive mindset, along with his determination and resilience. TWEET: Having a healthy outlet for frustration helps fuel a positive mindset. #chasingdreams Getting results How does Michael’s youth program produce the desired results? As he goes into schools around the country, his two-day program helps young people recognize the land mines in their stories and the damage they didn’t even know they had sustained. He teaches them to revisit those painful places but know that they can’t stay there if they want to move forward. Michael shares examples of kids who were wounded deeply; some go on to have miraculous healing journeys, and some choose to go in other tragic directions. Besides his youth program, Michael created his book of motivation and encouragement to help even more people. TWEET: You can’t stay in the painful places if you want to move forward. #chasingdreams Feeling lost Where do you turn when you feel lost? Michael likens feeling “lost” in life to going through a shipwreck and finding the broken pieces that are left---and holding onto them. He says to take those broken pieces and change your perspective. He warns us to be careful to not “drown in the shallow water,” but to stand up and walk on. The only constant in life is change, so look at 2020’s challenges as a time in which we’ve all felt lost in some way. Again, change your perspective and move forward. TWEET: Be careful not to drown in the shallow water. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Narrow down your dream to what will make you happy, not what will give you the biggest paycheck.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:01] What young Michael wanted to be [11:31] How Michael developed a positive mindset [14:40] How Michael started his non-profit [18:40] The results of Michael’s program [24:36] Why Michael wrote his book [29:41] The importance of self-reflection [33:07] When you’re feeling lost [39:08] The value of listening [41:28] Why we need to live conscious lives [46:41] How you can “check-in” on others [47:44] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Michael’s Facebook Michael’s LinkedIn Michael’s Website Shake the Dirt Experience Youth Voices Center Inc. Can you still chase your dreams if you aren’t sure about how to move forward? Yes! Today’s guest shares his personal experience with learning to be still and focus on the next step. Brian Drury is a return guest from Episode 44. We’re checking in with Brian to see what’s new in his life and his dream chase. He’s the founder of Overcoming Graduation, the creator and host of the Overcoming Graduation podcast, a professional speaker, coach, and author of the #1 Amazon bestseller, The First Step. Through his work, he helps teach young adults everything he wished he had known about habits and mindset to help them create their dream lives, starting today. One of Brian’s recent speeches went viral and has reached over 14.7 million people around the world, and is now featured as one of Goalcast’s Top Inspiring Videos. Brian also has a passion for travel; he speaks three languages, taught himself to speak Portuguese in just seven months, and has traveled to 17 different countries around the world. Brian wants everyone, young and old, to realize that their dream life is within their reach if they are willing to think differently and take action. Focus on the next small step Do you always know the next step to take? No, there are times when you are in a place of uncertainty. You don’t always have clarity and focus on the next step to take, but you have to move forward in incremental steps to reach bigger goals down the road. Brian hasn’t always had the clarity in business and personal relationships for achieving the success he wanted. He says that even “on the path to somewhere,” you have to be able to find joy along the way. “Life won’t be sunshine and rainbows every single day.” TWEET: You know if you explode and blow up, it’s not going to bring the results you are looking for. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Learning to live in “the medium” Do you live in extremes? Brian admits that living in extremes has been his norm, but he is learning to stay in a healthier, happier “medium.” Even though he teaches self-care, he has had to discipline himself to keep up with that care every day, especially when the stress and busy-ness of life get in the way. Living in “the medium” has helped him take full responsibility in his identity and prompted an honest conversation with his father, which was a big emotional release. TWEET: I’ve lived in extremes for most of my life. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Enjoy today - and tomorrow Is your inner child still there? Brian says we need to be playful and embrace our inner child, but we need moderation in healthy areas and honesty in communication and relationships. We need to cut out bad habits and embrace healthy ones so that we can enjoy the next day in the same way as today. Brian lives by a quote from author Aubrey Marcus: “Don’t enjoy today at the expense of tomorrow.” Brian says we need to make time to play, have fun, and live in the moment. TWEET: Having a coach and mentor has changed my life drastically. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams See the behind-the-scenes interview with Brian for more! www.aimeej21.com/youtube OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:22] How Brian is still chasing his dreams [2:02] Being in a different place [5:38] Focus on the next step [9:55] Having it “all figured out” is inauthentic [16:14] Learning to take full responsibility [20:54] Easy to say, harder to do [23:56] How removing the consequences eliminates negative self-talk [31:36] The value of what you loved to do as a kid [34:22] What Brian learned last year [35:38] The dangers of social media assumptions [39:52] How we “dress up” our dreams with destination fallacies [45:22] Your own definition of truth [47:32] Slowing down to enjoy the NOW RESOURCES MENTIONED: Brian’s Website Brian on Facebook Brian on Twitter Brain on Instagram Find out how to donate to the show: www.aimeej21.com/donate TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: Life is a “choose your own adventure” situation. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: We often default to the struggles that are given to us instead of choosing our struggle. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: Society glorifies behaviors that are unhealthy for us. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: Taking full responsibility means you will take action to improve your life and not blame others. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams
Maybe you envision being a stay-at-home mom and have no desire to continue in a career after children come to your family---or maybe you want to keep working a full-time job outside the home and the thought of spending all day at home with kids scares you to death. The real problem here is that most of us don’t think there is another option other than one end of the spectrum or the other. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to do both and be successful in both roles? There is good news and a third option, and my guest today is here to talk about it. Shannnon Miles is a master delegator. She and her husband, Bryan, grew a two-person operation into a staff of 60 corporate team members by seeing where they were the strongest, and delegating the rest. They lead with trust and have built a thriving business on the premise that adults are adults and can handle their business. The pair are also visionaries of the virtual workplace. Shannon’s passion, in addition to helping others realize the freedom they receive from delegating, is to bring to light the challenges women face in the workplace. From finding the courage to ask your boss for a flexible schedule to deciding if there’s an option for you outside 100% full-time, on-site office work, and 100% full-time, stay-at-home mom. Shannon has walked the walk and is here to lead other women on their journey to finding their own third option, which happens to be the title of her book, The Third Option. TWEET: Chasing your dreams is not a binary choice - there is a third option that you can feel better about! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles The hybrid model Don’t we all want a way to “have it all”? Shannon found a hybrid way to have it all, but it didn’t look like she thought it would. She had to readjust her thinking and mindset about what she wanted long-term and figure out how to get there in the short-term. It meant taking a humbling career change and setting aside her ego and pride. She found that there was so much space available as a third option between full-time on-site work and full-time stay-at-home mom. TWEET: Having it all doesn’t look the same for everyone. You can find the “all” that works for you without feeling guilty! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Going ALL IN How are you at taking risks? Shannon and her husband both had an overwhelming urge to “do something big,” but they knew it would require a big risk and a big move. They cashed in their 401(k)’s, left their jobs, and started their own business. With two young kids, it was scary and terrifying, but they were so compelled that the drive overtook the fear. Their individual corporate experiences and skillsets helped in launching the new company. Shannon says that you can leverage all your background for the next season and the next journey. They both knew this was something they couldn’t dip their toes in gradually, but would have to go ALL IN. TWEET: Big moves require big risks so it’s important to move past your fear into action! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Let’s talk delegation Have you ever thought about delegation in regards to how it helps OTHER people pursue their dreams? It’s hard to let go and have others step in to help, and there is a certain amount of guilt associated with delegation. There are so many myths that we tell ourselves about why delegation is a weakness. It’s simply one of the limiting beliefs that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. TWEET: Our limiting beliefs are the main thing that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser--”Get very comfortable with not having it all figured out. Do you have a plan for what might come “after”? So often, we become hyper-focused on chasing a dream, with no real thought or plan for what might come next or how we need to pivot when circumstances change. My guest today was focused on her dream of being a gold medal Olympic athlete, but then she converted that ambition into other fields when her athlete days were done. Lauryn Williams, CFP, is a four-time Olympic medalist AND the first American woman to medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. While pursuing professional sports, Lauryn interacted with two financial advisors who didn’t provide the services she needed. She asked friends what they were doing about their finances, and the answers were vague and unsettling. Constantly looking for ways to make a difference in the lives of others, she decided to put her finance degree and MBA to use to fill the gap for young professionals. Eager to learn everything she could, she then pursued the Certified Financial Planner certification. Her company, Worth Winning, offers virtual services to help young professionals get the answers to the financial questions that matter most to them. Whether that is creating a budget, figuring out a plan for paying off student loans, setting goals for savings, or understanding your 401(k), Worth Winning is ready to help with all things personal finance. An athletic career doesn’t last forever What do you do when one phase of a career is over? Lauryn had no idea what would come next for her. The truth is, when we chase one dream for a long time, we need to be prepared for what happens next. There is no shame in having a Plan B and knowing when to pivot to something else. Having a plan in place is a life skill that Lauryn encourages people to cultivate. Sometimes the transformation is tough when you have to find a new identity and a different dream to chase. TWEET: “Having a back-up plan is NOT a bad thing.” @worth_winning Making financial plans How do you pay for college when your family has limited resources? With no trust fund and no savings for college, Lauryn wasn’t sure how she would pay for college. Even though she had been taught financial responsibility from a young age, she needed an expert to help make plans. People usually do business with someone they know, like, or trust----but Lauryn had none of those connections. The first financial planner she saw didn’t get to know her needs and wasn’t able to help her. What she really needed was someone to teach her financial literacy, which is what Lauryn seeks to do for her clients today. TWEET: “Know how to pay yourself first.” @worth_winning Choosing someone to help Since anyone can proclaim themselves a “financial advisor,” many have a conflict of interest or seek to sell insurance or other services to people instead of helping them with what they really need. Lauryn’s advice is to look for a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) because no one can attach that title without going through the proper training and certification process. It’s important to know which questions to ask and whether the professional is commission-based or fee-only. Need a business license? One of the first places we stop when getting started is the business license. But, what kind of licenses do you need? Where do you go to get them? Today I will deal with these and other related questions to help you get your business out of bureaucracy mode. [Tweet "Having a license does not make you a business ... revenue does #entrepreneur #businesslicense"] Business licenses are a tax and not directly related to your legal structure (sole proprietorship, C-corp, S-corp, LLC, etc). Note - This is not legal advice, but common sense views from those who have been in the trenches. General Rules of thumb about Business Licenses Solopreneurs rarely need them Creatives rarely need them Home based businesses rarely need them Often when you first start you can get away without them. When DO you need a business license before you start? If you fall into one of the following, you need to check out licenses before you get started. Regulated services such as a day care, plumber, lawyer, doctor, food services, etc. These are often regulated by a state board or agency. Storefronts that will have traffic such as stores, offices with lots of visitors, repair shops, etc. Other Licenses and Taxes that Might Impact You Additional city, county, and state requirements Trade licenses - plumbers, electricians, etc. They vary by location. Home Based Business Licenses (Yes some governments tax you for this) Sales Tax Health and Safety Sign permits Construction permits Home Owners Associations (HOA) - not technically a license or tax The Painless Business License Process First, find out what you need. YOU can do this the hard way or the easy way. Hard way - Start with the Small Business Administration (SBA) and then contact your various government agencies. Check out this chart for contacts you can make to get you started. Make the calls and ask the questions. Easier Way - Contact your attorney or CPA (if you have one) and they will often do it for you - for a fee of course. Easiest Way - Legal Zoom offers a one stop service that gives you the forms you need. Just buy their package and fill out the forms and pay the fees and you should be good to go. Then buy them. If you need anything that is highly regulated - such as trade permits etc, then get them now. If you just need a standard business license, then wait until you have done about $1000 worth of business first. That way you will actually know what business you are in, and you will also have a sense of whether or not you want to change it. Links mentioned in this episode: Do I need a business license to sell online? Do I need a business license or LLC? Legal Zoom Business License Compliance Package - Pay one fee and get what you need. The first tip is to have a reason to sign up, and this should NEVER be to save 10% on your first order. Give your peeps something they want. Solve a problem for them. If you give them something they can use, whether it’s a free tutorial, a product FAQ or a how to video, you'll condition them to choose on knowledge rather than price, and that can only be a good thing. Download your 12 things you can put in your newsletter These people have signed up because they want what you have to offer and you need to be respectful of that, you need to make a commitment to serve them up something on a regular basis, whether that’s weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly. Recipes Recipes appeal to everyone. Even if you don’t sell food based products, work out what draws your customer to you, and use that to tailor a recipe for them. Maybe your customers are busy working mums, so you could curate 3 easy weeknight meals you can get on the table in 20 minutes. Or maybe your customers are foodies, in which case you might do a 3 course menu for Winter. This can also present opportunities to sell product, especially if you sell homewares! A day in the life of Create a pictorial or video journey of what a day in your store looks like.
