...You're a WINNER! Today, Matt, Todd, and Mike dive into 1986's animated Sci-Fi action slugfest: Transformers: The Movie, directed by Nelson Shin, and featuring an all-star voice cast: Orson Welles as Unicron Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron Judd Nelson as Rodimus Prime Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus And of course... Frank Welker as Megatron & Soundwave Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime & Ironhide Written by Ron Friedman, this movie brought us many unforgettable moments. If you know & love the movie, you already know where this is going. Talk to the right person, and mentioning this movie might just bring back some deep childhood trauma. If you don't know it yet, you're about to delve into one of the most effective and disturbing 'war films' an '80s child could watch—something akin to "We Were Soldiers" but, you know, with toys, set to some of the most rocking '80s glam you'll ever hear. We're talking about a bunch of toy-heroes getting systematically slaughtered, genocided, tortured, and dipped in acid... So grab your nearest action figure and jump in for a fantastic, fun-filled ride of family adventure. Transformers: The Movie is far more 'adult' than one would ever have expected, and the impactful death of some of the biggest stars is remembered forever. Many recall tearful theaters and leaving in shock. Maybe you were never a fan, and maybe the Michael Bay movies didn't help. But this is different—more akin to "Heavy Metal" than a Saturday afternoon with some trucks and lasers. Check this classic out! America doesn't make too many animated films quite like this, so it's no surprise that the Transformers' origins lie thousands of miles away in Japan. Till all are one... and as always, thank you for listening. Matt rolls out his favorites on Letterboxd and BlueSky @MovieMattSirois. Happy New Year and Ba weep granah weep nini bong to you all! Transformers started out as a toy line, and became a comic and a TV series, and it was making huge profits for parent company Hasbro, but what do you do when you want to introduce a whole new toy line and get rid of the old ones? Why, you make a feature length animation to kill off the ones you don't want anymore. It'll be easy, right?Well, turns out Hasbro ignored the advice of seasoned writer Ron Friedman, who insisted killing Optimus Prime would be a terrible idea. Hasbro went ahead and massacred not only Optimus, but other fan favourite characters, just to get kids to want new toys. While this decision is seen as one of the worst ideas in Transformers history, it arguably made The Transformers: The Movie into more than meets the eye, and while the move failed at the box office, its legacy in animation history would be preserved as an emotionally impactful story for millions of fans, and is now a beloved cult classic.I would love to hear your thoughts on (From the Archive) The Transfomers: The Movie (1986) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Show notes provided by Jack Adrien From its humble beginnings selling textile remnants, three brothers founded Hassenfeld Brothers in Providence, Rhode Island, in late 1923. Some six decades later, and more than a few corporate evolutions, its corporate decedent, Hasbro Industries, found it easier to promote its toy and entertainment products (e.g., comic book publication) directly to its prime customers (i.e., children) via daily, syndicated thirty-minute animated television series. Given that Hassenfeld Brothers produced the first twelve-inch G.I. Joe “action figure” in 1964, the toyline stands as one of the company's notable legacy properties. Hasbro relaunched the property as G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, a 3.75-inch (9.5 centimeter) scale toyline in 1982 with a corresponding Marvel Comics series, leading to a five-part G.I. Joe mini-series in 1983 (later titled “The M.A.S.S. Device”), and the full G.I. Joe: Real American Hero series in 1985 that ran for ninety-five episodes, ending on Thursday, November 20, 1986. Originally planned for a theatrical release, unexpected production delays led to Hasbro releasing The Transformers: The Movie feature before G.I. Joe: The Movie. Moreover, the poor box office performance of fellow Hasbro-owned properties My Little Pony: The Movie on Friday, June 06, 1986, and The Transformers: The Movie release on Friday, August 08, 1986, respectively, led to Hasbro choosing to release the G.I. Joe feature film direct-to-video and airing on television in syndication, first in its entirety and later as a five-part miniseries. With a current 43 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, G.I. Joe: The Movie neither captured the audience's imagination when it was released nor reignited nostalgic goodwill in the nearly forty years since. Whereas the visually dynamic three-minute opening sequence highlights everything we loved about the animated series, including the surprise revision of the show's theme song with Cobra-specific lyrics, the actual story was a hot mess. In a nutshell, the movie reveals that the Cobra terrorist organization was created by an ancient human/snake/insectoid hybrid Cobra-La civilization, led by Golobulus, refuged in the Himalayas as humanity evolved across the globe. Further, the movie retconned the Cobra leader, Cobra Commander, as a Cobra-La sleeper agent. Cobra-La's evil plan: launch hundreds of techno-organic pods into orbit to spread spores that will devolve humanity into mindless snake beasts. Serpentor (trust us, he would take too much time to explain in these show notes) leads Cobra's senior management to help Cobra-La execute its plan in exchange for preserving their humanity. Written by Ron Friedman, who also wrote The Transformers: The Movie, both movies share similar story elements (i.e., celebrity voice actors, new hero recruits, new antagonists, the “death” of a beloved leader, and a world-ending threat that requires the new leader to save the day). Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Kevin, Keith, and John as we discuss what works or doesn't with the new characters, uncredited story consultant and animated series wriBuzz Dixon's original story ideas, and so many missed opportunities. You will know the movie's true purpose (hint: introduce new characters to sell more toys) and unrealized potential. And knowing is half the battle.   Yooo, Joe!

Age stereotypes in the media hurt everyone

In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by writer-producer Ron Friedman and David Gittins, executive director of Age Inclusion in Media, to talk about the way the media portrays older adults and how these stereotypes can have a profound impact on workers and job seekers in the real world. I'm going to start out by saying, you can read about this conversation, but I believe you need to hear it or watch it for yourself to really capture what it means to be portrayed as "out of your prime" just because of your age. At 91, Ron is a great example of someone whose creative mind and spirit are just as sharp as they were when he started writing more than 60 years ago. The name Ron Friedman may not be familiar to you, but there is no doubt you've heard of some of the television shows that he's written for in his career – All in the Family, Get Smart, The Odd Couple, Happy Days, and Starsky and Hutch to name a few. In all, Ron has written more than 700 episodes of television and is well-known among action hero fans for creating the animated series G.I. Joe and developing Transformers for American TV. Along with his good friend Stan Lee, the pair created The Marvel Action Hour. "I still get residuals. I still get fan mail. Somebody wrote to tell me that they loved my Odd Couple. I wrote that in the 70s, but they're still playing it. I must have known something valuable to contribute what I contributed to give something that life expectancy," Ron says. Yet, despite all the early success, as he got older, he found that he was getting hired for fewer and fewer writing jobs. He says it come down to ageism, and, unfortunately, it is something most older adults face today when they are looking for work, whether it is in entertainment or another industry. "Not only is it acceptable, but of all the protected classes – where you have to be on guard not to use the offensive terms or reproduce the memes that offensive – ageism is still not even considered," says Ron. Ron, David, and I sit on the board of Age Inclusion in Media, a nonprofit campaign to change the way older adults are portrayed in film, TV, and advertising. "It's still a very stereotypical way, and that's down to the fact that we don't have proper representation behind the screen. We don't have proper representation in the writer's room," David argues. "When we don't have older writers writing for older characters, we get stereotypical portrayals of what an older character is, which means we get tropes, we get cranky old characters, we get forgetful old characters, and we get sidekicks as opposed to central characters in their own lives." David says that this lack of representation, and the stereotypes it creates, has an impact on every older adult. "From what we show on screen teaches us how to believe and that then teaches us how to act. So, if we see older characters being portrayed as passive morons who are just leaching on society, then we start to treat older people like that in their life, which then circles back in and saying, we're not going to hire an older person because we know they're idiots. We know they're useless because we've seen not on TV and we believe it." Ron says we've got to stop telling the "same old story." Older adults, like all of us, come in many different shapes and sizes - one stereotype doesn't fit al. Society needs to embrace that age is jus one part of who we are. We are an amalgamation of our life experiences - what we have learned at school, in our jobs, and just living our lives. Like everyone, it is very personal. He believes that despite already being "two and a half times older than Taylor Swift," the older he gets, the more he has to share. "Writers remind us of our humanity, and if we do it well, we create an event. Those are moments by which life becomes livable and beautiful and life is made up of moments. That's what we remember. It doesn't matter what you had for breakfast on Tuesd...

We are kicking the new year off with a trip down memory lane, as we have some nostalgic childhood picks for you! Samantha recommends Lois Lowry's novel The Giver, Indy revisits the animated Transformers movie, and we get ready to think pink with next week's big watch; Barbie!   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa     The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel written by Lois Lowry, set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. In the novel, the society has taken away pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. In an effort to preserve order, the society also lacks any color, climate, terrain, and a true sense of equality. The protagonist of the story, a 12-year-old boy named Jonas, is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness. Jonas struggles with concepts of the new emotions and things introduced to him, and whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is possible to have one without the other. The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. The Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 animated science fiction action film based on the Transformers television series. It was released in North America on August 8, 1986, and in the United Kingdom on December 12, 1986.[8] It was co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the television series. The screenplay was written by Ron Friedman, who created Bionic Six a year later. The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, John Moschitta Jr., Scatman Crothers, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Orson Welles, who died 10 months before the film's release, in his final film role. The soundtrack comprises electronic music composed by Vince DiCola and songs from rock and heavy metal acts including Stan Bush and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated films and specials. The film stars Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the pair on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis. The supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.

There are a lot of good reasons to be more optimistic. Interestingly, it also seems simply pretending to be an optimist has many of the same benefits. This episode starts with a discussion on how real or pretend optimism can be good for everyone and why even the most hardened pessimist might want to try looking at the bright side of life. Source: Michael Mercer, PhD author of Spontaneous Optimism (https://amzn.to/3vo7oc9). To be successful typically requires skill, practice and hard work. However, one often overlooked strategy to being successful is - reverse engineering. In other words, by taking apart and analyzing what others have done to be successful, you can find a better path for yourself, according to psychologist Ron Friedman. Ron is author of the book Decoding Greatness: How the Best in the World Reverse Engineer Success (https://amzn.to/2REVhc7). Listen as he reveals how some of the top people in their field use this technique to achieve greatness and how you can too. Few of us are fans of houseflies. I'm sure you don't like them buzzing around your head or landing on your food or ruining your outdoor picnic. As pesky as they are though, we couldn't survive with flies. There are about 20 million flies on the planet for every human and they actually do some very beneficial things for us, according to biologist Jonathan Balcombe author of the book SUPER FLY: The Unexpected Lives of the World's Most Successful Insects (https://amzn.to/3bVgqp3). Listen as he takes you on a tour into what it is like to be a fly and all the gross yet beneficial things flies do.  Growing up I am sure you were told to go play outside. We have all heard that it is good to be outdoors. How good is it? Listen as I explain the very concrete benefits of being outside in nature for all of us – and especially for kids and teens. https://positivepsychology.com/positive-effects-of-nature/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Just as life challenges us with limited time, resources, and information, excellence demands a strategy beyond innate talent and colossal effort.  That's where Ron Friedman's Decoding Greatness comes into play, offering a new approach: deciphering greatness through reverse engineering the triumphs of others.  This book isn't just a collection of thought-provoking ideas; it's a practical toolbox filled with applicable tactics for your life's journey.  In this podcast, I'm sharing my top 10 insights from the book.  “Can you recommend a book for…?” “What are you reading right now?” “What are your favorite books?” I get asked those types of questions a lot and, as an avid reader and all-around bibliophile, I'm always happy to oblige. I also like to encourage people to read as much as possible because knowledge benefits you much like compound interest. The more you learn, the more you know; the more you know, the more you can do; the more you can do, the more opportunities you have to succeed. On the flip side, I also believe there's little hope for people who aren't perpetual learners. Life is overwhelmingly complex and chaotic, and it slowly suffocates and devours the lazy and ignorant. So, if you're a bookworm on the lookout for good reads, or if you'd like to get into the habit of reading, this book club for you. The idea here is simple: Every month, I'll share a book that I've particularly liked, why I liked it, and several of my key takeaways from it. I'll also keep things short and sweet so you can quickly decide whether the book is likely to be up your alley or not. Alright, let's get to the takeaways. --- Timestamps: 0:00 - Please leave a review of the show wherever you listen to podcasts and make sure to subscribe and leave a comment! 4:21 - The 10 best parts of Decoding Greatness 8:25 - My award-winning fitness books for men and women: https://legionathletics.com/products/books/ --- Mentioned on the Show: My award-winning fitness books for men and women: https://legionathletics.com/products/books/

In the last set of videos, we talked a lot about building strong relationships and we touched on adding value. This week on Real Relationships Real Revenue, we are going to be diving into the topic of adding value even more and how you can have a long-term mindset when it comes to relationships. We cover things like the Mere Exposure Effect, creating an asset list, asking for help, proper cadence, and tracking what you can.    Topics We Cover in This Episode:    The Mere Exposure Effect Likability and frequency matter The importance of having systems for outreach Systems for collecting interesting things Creating an asset list Places to store your assets Why you shouldn't hesitate to ask for help How the act of helping correlates with likeability Ways to ask for help or advice Why monthly is the perfect cadence for outreach  How to add value each month Setting reminders How to disconnect from the outcome Adding value without expecting anything in return How to track what you can control   Don't be afraid to become a collector of assets and really dive into adding value to your first among equals. Come up with a system to track the ways in which you are adding value and don't make the mistake I see so many people make and give up too soon.    Studies show that people like you more when they see or interact with you often and they feel like they are helping you in some way. By creating systems to consistently reach out to people at the proper cadence and add value in unexpected and unpaid ways, you are sure to win and deepen that relationship. Remember, you don't win when you get a reply, you win by simply offering the value. If you do this, you will be amazed at the results.        Resources Mentioned: Read more about the Mere Exposure Effect Listen to my conversation with Ron Friedman Listen to my conversation with Marissa King Listen to my conversation with Dr. Ivan Misner Listen to my conversation with Ron Friedman about tracking things

You win when you offer the value. This is so important but most people quit too soon. You will win and deepen the relationship.    If you want to go even deeper, make sure to check out my conversation with Ron Friedman linked below. In 1993, the world watched as two bitter rivals shook hands on the South Lawn of the White House, presenting the best hope for peace in the Middle East seen in centuries of bloodshed. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chair Yasser Arafat's signing of the Oslo Accords—and the handshake that followed, cajoled by U.S. President Bill Clinton—comprised an iconic snapshot in history. In the moment, the world was awash in optimism, and Jewish Americans in particular were riveted by what was happening in the Middle East. But in Eastern Europe, Jewish people living in former Soviet states faced a growing threat of persecution, and the problems went largely unreported. And Operation Exodus, an effort by the United Jewish Appeal to repatriate one million Jewish refugees from failing states like Uzbekistan to Israel, would need a brilliant publicity campaign to motivate donors to support its ambitious goals. So the UJA hired Dick Grove, the founder of Ink PR, for the job. And, together with a handpicked team of PR professionals and documentarians, he traveled into the Lion's Den itself, documenting destitution firsthand in a failed Soviet State and building a massive fundraising publicity campaign for UJA. In this episode, he's joined by Operation Exodus director Ron Friedman to rehash the tale of this extraordinary undertaking. Visit our website for pictures from Dick's trip to Uzbekistan. The Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 animated science fiction action film based on the Transformers television series. It was released in North America on August 8, 1986, and in the United Kingdom on December 12, 1986.[8] It was co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the television series. The screenplay was written by Ron Friedman, who created The Bionic Six a year later. The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, John Moschitta Jr., Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker, and saw the final film roles for Orson Welles who died before the film's release and Scatman Crothers who died after the release of the film.[9] The soundtrack comprises electronic music composed by Vince DiCola and songs from rock and heavy metal acts including Stan Bush and "Weird Al" Yankovic. The story is set in 2005, 20 years after the TV series' second season.[10] After a Decepticon assault devastates Autobot City, Optimus Prime wins a deadly one-on-one duel with Megatron, but ultimately sustains fatal injuries in the encounter. With Megatron gravely injured, the Decepticons are forced to retreat, saving the Autobots. The Autobots are hunted across the galaxy by Unicron, a planet-sized Transformer intending to consume Cybertron and who transfigures Megatron to become the enslaved Galvatron. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wvuncommonplace/message
