Welcome back to Making Bank. On today's episode, we have a compilation of previous episodes with Liz Benny, Sally Hogshead, Shannon Miles, Lisa Sasevich, Bonnie Fahy, Diana House and Marisa Murgatroyd and in this episode you will hear tips and tricks from top entrepreneurs about the guide to success.   (2:21) Liz Benny Learn to get to know who you are as a person. Turn your curses into something that you can profit from. Understand where your strengths lie and where your weaknesses are. Learn to allow yourself some help in areas you are not good at. Give the job to someone who is good in the field and have an accountability partner who is going to check up on you at all times.   (6:32) Sally Hogshead High performers deliver a very specific benefit. Some may be detail oriented and they will hone in on details and they will look for clients and projects so they can overdeliver in details. Most people have this misconception that entrepreneurs are geniuses or prodigies but truth be told, it's just that they are very detail oriented, hard working and they go the extra mile to do something and that is what separates them from most.    (9:40) Shannon Miles Working from home has been proven to be the new norm. However, it brings its own set of challenges. When you work from home, you have to be strict with your schedules. You need to track down your hours of work. You need to communicate and be able to keep progress up regardless of working from the comfort of your home. It becomes even more important to know the productivity of your employees.   (11:17) Lisa Sasevich Inspire your client to make a decision. Whatever that is that you do, make sure you have a good sales conversion machine. If you don't have a system to offer that difference, you are doing all the hard work for no reason. You won't see any rewards. Reverse engineer to lead to your offer and always make sure it is an irresistible offer that your clients cannot say no to.   (14:45) Bonnie Fahy The bottom line is if you outsource the wrong thing in your business you will not make any money. There is no use in doing something that does not lead anywhere. Have a little software that asks what you are doing every minute. How are you spending your time, daily? Learn to identify what are the things in your business that are helping you make more money. Those are the things you do not want to outsource. If you say yes to everything it will overwhelm you and eventually lead to burnout.   (20:27) Diana House If you want to be a lifetime entrepreneur you need to master the language of finance. You have to really be on top of all your finances. Finance is the language of entrepreneurship and you need to learn how to master it. Many people spend so much time trying to find new and innovative ways to improve their business and then they leave their finances to the bare minimum. This is the wrong way to live an entrepreneurial life.    (24:43) Marisa Murgatroyd Many people spend years of their lives empowering others with the promise of a steady check. Which is not a bad thing however if you are going to spend your life doing this, why not spend an extra hour or so thinking about what you can do yourself where people can pay you for your services. So it becomes utterly important to learn to identify your strengths and what you can offer people. Then start your own business. Take the leap of faith and work hard on it.   Links: @lizbenny  @sallyhogshead  @bryanandshannon  @lisasasevich  @bonniefahy  @diana_house_  @liveyourmessage

How to hire and work with a Virtual Assistant This is a question I get asked all the time. “Amy, how do I know when I’m ready for a VA? And, how do I hire and work with one?” It’s a valid question, and if you’re serious about growing your business it’s one you should be asking.  I hired my first VA in 2011, and I consider it one of the best entrepreneurial decisions of my journey so far.  My first VA helped me take my business to the next level because her support allowed me to truly focus on the areas of my business that I excelled in. But I get it, it’s hard to know when you’re really ready for a VA, how to go about hiring one, what tasks to have them do, and when to uplevel your working relationship with them.  To help you get more clarity on those things, I’ve invited my dear friend and VA expert, Shannon Miles to join me on the show. Shannon is the owner and creator of Belay Solutions, a company that connects entrepreneurs with virtual specialists to help support their growth and in this episode, she’s sharing the progression of hiring and working with a VA.  Rate, Review, & Subscribe on Apple Podcasts ‘I love Amy and Online Marketing Made Easy.’

Bryan and Shannon Miles fell in love when they were young, got married, started a family and each started building their own successful careers. But a series of unexpected experiences led them to re-evaluate what they wanted out of their lives, and the way they wanted to contribute. So they pretty much blew everything up and went out on their own, starting a new venture together with the goal of creating freedom, by building a company that helped others create freedom. Not a bad vision, right?Their passion is all about empowering small business owners and entrepreneurs to be more efficient as they achieve success in business (and in life). Having now generated more than $100M in revenue as the Co-CEO's of BELAY SOLUTIONS, a virtual staffing company, they graduated to Co-Chairs where they are stepping into a more educational role, sharing the Own Not Run philosophy that led them to build their own company. I was fascinated by their approach, since it’s always been a large part of my aspiration, too. To build something that truly mattered, while also doing it in a way that put family and flourishing at the center. Quick note, too, this conversion, like a few others we’ve recently released, was recorded in our studio in what we’ve now come to know as Before Times. We’d been holding it until it felt like a more accessible conversation, and with so many people now reflecting on how to create their own endeavors or build existing companies in a way that built freedom into the DNA, it felt like the right time to share it.You can find Bryan and Shannon Miles at: Website : https://ownnotrun.com/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/belay_solutions/Check out our offerings & partners: Factor 75: Healthy, chef-prepared meals delivered to your doorstep. This week on the Girls 4 Greatness Podcast I have the pleasure of chatting with the one and only Shannon Miles. Shannon is a wife, mom, author, and co-owner of the highly successful premium staffing company, BELAY.  I invite you to listen in as Shannon and I dive into the reasoning behind why Shannon and her husband, Bryan, started BELAY, as well as what it has taken for Shannon herself to discover what “having it all” meant for her.  Shannon and Bryan started BELAY 10 years ago after cashing in all of their 401(k)s for start-up capital. Over the years their company has exploded to over one thousand team members, all working from home, pursuing their own idea of “having it all” while serving BELAY’s 1,400 clients.  Shannon is also the author of a book called The Third Option: Why a Woman Doesn’t Have to Choose Between a Career and Family, but Can Actually Have Both and Succeed. In her book,  Shannon shares how she took a leap of faith to create a flexible career that gives meaning to both her work and her family.    If you are someone who has ever struggled to deal with the feelings of conflict that sometimes arise from trying to juggle family and career life, then this episode is for you. Shannon shares some beautiful insights as to just how important it is to tune in to those feelings of conflict.  She shares how so often what we risk in order to live the life we really and truly want to live far outweighs the pain of regret of not having lived that life.  Please be sure to connect with and follow Shannon and BELAY on Instagram under @belay_solutions and on LinkedIn under @BELAY. Female Leaders | At a Crossroads As female leaders, we often reach a crossroads where it feels like we have to choose between work and family instead of following a natural path. It is an illusion that Shannon Miles knows all too well. After working towards her dream job for four years, Shannon and her husband decided to have a baby. On paper, everything looked perfect; Shannon and Bryan would continue their lives in sales with a nanny lined up to help carry the weight. But when her daughter was born, Shannon wanted to spend much more time with her new child than she anticipated—becoming a stay at home mom was never in the cards. The Third Option Shannon managed to phase out of her position and work part-time so she could spend time with her family and build financial stability simultaneously. However, what started as a temporary financial bridge turned into a more permanent solution. Shannon stayed with the company until the founding of Belay in 2010 and fought hard to achieve work-life integration. She realized there is a third option, and many female leaders need to explore it for themselves. Shannon worked harder and just as much; the only thing that changed was where she did it. But where do you go when there are no clear next steps? Shannon saw entrepreneurship as the only viable option. On-Belay Upward mobility was no longer an option for Shannon or her husband in their current jobs, but they always entertained the idea of starting a business together. Virtual staffing was a thriving niche with the potential to fill a much greater market need. So, they built a line of service and Belay was born. Shannon and Bryan founded Belay with the mantra “own not run.” From day one, they have been preparing the organization to run smoothly while they're not in the picture. Shannon and Bryan designed their business to serve the life they want to live, offering a service that enables their clients to do the same! Female leaders face many unique challenges, but there will always be a pathway to the time and financial freedom you've been searching for. About Shannon Miles Shannon Miles is an advocate for people to have a career AND the flexibility they crave to keep their priorities in a healthy order. She is the CEO and Co-founder of BELAY, a staffing company serving businesses all over the U.S. When Shannon faced an all too common, yet emotional decision to stay home with her new baby or return to a fast-paced, demanding career (that she loved), she knew that there had to be a way to have both. Shannon first asked her boss if she could work part-time from home and her boss said “no”. She resolved not to accept that initial “no” as final but rather stuck to her convictions and proposed the same plan to her boss' boss. He said ‘yes' and she began planning how to make her schedule and workplace more flexible a reality by creating what she calls “The Third Option” – having a career and a family and succeeding at both. With her personal experience as a driver, the idea evolved for an innovative staffing company where all employees and contractors work remotely from their home office. Shannon and her husband, Bryan, cashed in their 401(k)s in 2010 and founded BELAY. The company has exploded to 700+ team members, all working from home, pursuing their own Third Option while serving BELAY's 1,400+ clients. Without an office, BELAY has graced the Inc. 5000 list five times and was awarded the number one spot in Entrepreneur Magazine's Best Company Culture. Shannon's new book The Third Option: Why a Woman Doesn't Have to Choose Between a Career and Family, but Can Actually Have Both and Succeed is now available. In The Third Option, Shannon shares how she took a leap of faith to create a flexible career that gives meaning to both her work and her family, and she shows how you too can accomplish the same. Shannon is passionate about serving others and inspiring them to live fuller, richer lives. She lives with her husband Bryan, and their two children, Harper and Rainey, in Atlanta. Practicing what she preaches, they spend their days running the company from their porch in Georgia, from the mountains in Jackson Hole, or from the beaches in the panhandle of Florida. What You Will Learn: How Shannon discovered a third option at the crossroads of work and family Why female leaders should pursue a career they love and time with their family simultaneously How Shannon transitioned from part-time employee to full-time entrepreneur How Shannon and her husband founded Belay Why you should strive to own not run your business How Shannon and Bryan designed their business to serve the life they want to live Resources: Twitter: @shannonkmiles Facebook: facebook.com/bryanshannonmiles/ Instagram: @shannonkmiles LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/shannon-miles Website: https://belaysolutions.com/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Third-Option-between-Actually-Succeed-ebook/dp/B07B8T9QGQ

There are certain critical moments that we, as leaders, have a chance to change our minds--to think differently in order to lead differently. And when we do, the outcomes for those we lead are extraordinary. In this episode, our Founder and CEO Jenni Catron has great conversation with Lindsey Epperly, founder of Epperly Travel and EntreTravel, about some of the mental shifts she's made while growing her business, investing in her team and developing as a leader.About Lindsey:Lindsey Epperly wandered into the travel industry at the age of 19 by complete accident: she walked into a local travel agency looking for a brochure and walked out with a job planning honeymoons. She built up her book of business while attending the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and launched her own brand through an entrepreneurship competition. Five years into the role, she desired to begin training and mentoring other agents and decided to launch Epperly Travel, a boutique agency based in Atlanta with a focus on a modern, innovative approach to travel planning. Epperly Travel has recently received the prestigious honor of the Bulldog 100 List, for 2020 representing the fastest growing businesses led by UGA Alumni. Over the course of her career, Lindsey has been recognized as one of Travel Agent Magazine's Top 30 Under 30, Wendy Perrin's WOW List Caribbean expert, and Jezebel Magazine's Trailblazing 10. Lindsey's greatest passion is mentoring others in business and, of course, traveling - usually with her husband, who just last year quit his job in finance to join the Epperly Travel team.  Lindsey is passionate about mentoring and training others in the travel industry, so much so that she and her husband recently launched a separate travel advisor training company called EntreTravel, an online training and certification program dedicated to teaching advisors how to run a successful travel business. Some Highlights from Jenni and Lindsey's conversation:In navigating the transition from technician or practitioner to owner and CEO, Lindsey describes the theme of her leadership growth in the first 5 years of being a business owner as this: “learning to let go of control and let others who are capable step up and do their jobs and do their jobs well without me getting in our own way.”When we realize our own capacity, we can place people in the right spots. When people are in the right spots, they shine. When faced with the unexpected transition of a key employee and being blindsided by the flood of emotions that followed, Lindsey says she realized...We had a culture problemWe needed to prepare for the work-life balance dynamic of working with my soon-to-be husbandIdentify the experienced people whose advice and counsel you want to seek out.“I realized I was good at asking for advice, but I didn't realize how bad I was at asking for help.”On seasons of growth that can feel overwhelming: “Your natural response can be to double down and do more, work more, but the better response is to pour into yourself.”Some team culture shifts Lindsey enacted:Culture shift to eliminate bottleneck and to encourage team members to be open with and learning from each other.Recreate and environment for water cooler conversations in a virtual world.Self-leadership to focus on what only she could do--stepping out of the weeds in client facing role and into teaching, mentoring and training the practitioners.Lindsey created “Coffee and Conversations.” Sent them Epperly Travel mugs and starbucks gift cards along with an invite to meet regularly so she could pour into them as individuals.I am constantly evaluating what can I do to that's best for the company.“In order to grow, you've got to constantly replace yourself.” Shannon Miles from Belay (a busine

After much prayer and due diligence, Bryan and Shannon followed God’s call and founded Miles Advisory Group. Within two months, they had signed four contracts with leaders in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Wyoming – generating a wave of momentum that continues to this day.MAG expanded the horizons of their VA service model in eaHELP to include MAG Bookkeeping, copywriting services, and web support services. In January 2017, the Miles AG suite (eaHELP, MAG Bookkeeping, Render and Ellipsis) came together under one name – BELAY. This name has a great deal of significance to their leaders because of its core meaning: To belay is to provide the support a climber needs to ascend...And that is precisely what they do for their clients.Their suite of services allows their clients to scale with peace of mind, and take their organizations to new heights.Find out more about Brian & Shannon at:https://belaysolutions.com/our-company/our-story/

He has written about it for years and has put all of his thoughts into his second book, Virtual Culture: The Way We Work Doesn’t Work Anymore. Bryan loves to mentor other entrepreneurs and small business owners to reach their full potential, sitting on the board of Radical Mentoring and two other organizations. Welcome to the show Bryan. Shannon Miles is a master delegator. She and her husband Bryan grew a 2 person operation into a staff of 60 corporate team members by seeing where they were the strongest and delegating the rest. They lead with trust and have a thriving business built on the premise that adults are adults and can handle their business. The pair are also visionaries on the virtual workplace. Shannon’s passion, in addition to helping others realize the freedom they receive from delegating, is to bring to light the challenges women face in the workplace. From finding the courage to ask your boss for a flexible schedule, to deciding if there is an option for you outside 100% full-time onsite office work and a 100% full-time stay at home mom. They realized no one was executing on the idea of matching virtual assistants with businesses and knew something could be improved. With Bryan’s past experience with his company using a virtual assistant, it was no brainer!   Bryan and Shannon talk about their lives before their business, what they were doing, and how they started the business idea that would later grow into a team of 60 corporate team members!   We get to hear their thoughts about what it’s like working together (husband and wife) and what challenges they face, how they’ve switched roles and positions in their company, how they gain wisdom and advice from mentors and savvy business people in Atlanta and how they formed a business based off of delegation, what their process is for gaining talent on their team, and what sort of vision they have for their business.   Bryan shares some details about his talent pool, such as the average hourly rate, what type of hours are expected and what is expected of them and their duties. Shannon Miles is an advocate for people to have a career AND the flexibility they crave to keep their priorities in a healthy order. In 2010, they saw the need for an innovative staffing model where people could work remotely from their homes. They cashed in their 401(k)s and just like that, BELAY was born. The company has now exploded to over 600 team members – all working from home. Without an office, BELAY has graced the Inc. 5000 list three times and was awarded the number one spot in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Best Company Culture. Creating and fostering a healthy culture is close to Bryan’s heart. So close in fact that he is debunking the myth that cultures suffer when people don’t work in the same space with his new book, Virtual Culture: The Way We Work Doesn’t Work Anymore. This book illustrates how, with a 100% remote culture, BELAY is redefining what the workplace can look like and that it’s possible for others to create productive, profitable and growing companies that people want to work for – all without a centralized corporate facility. Maybe you envision being a stay-at-home mom and have no desire to continue in a career after children come to your family---or maybe you want to keep working a full-time job outside the home and the thought of spending all day at home with kids scares you to death. The real problem here is that most of us don’t think there is another option other than one end of the spectrum or the other. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to do both and be successful in both roles? There is good news and a third option, and my guest today is here to talk about it.  Shannnon Miles is a master delegator. She and her husband, Bryan, grew a two-person operation into a staff of 60 corporate team members by seeing where they were the strongest, and delegating the rest. They lead with trust and have built a thriving business on the premise that adults are adults and can handle their business. The pair are also visionaries of the virtual workplace. Shannon’s passion, in addition to helping others realize the freedom they receive from delegating, is to bring to light the challenges women face in the workplace. From finding the courage to ask your boss for a flexible schedule to deciding if there’s an option for you outside 100% full-time, on-site office work, and 100% full-time, stay-at-home mom. Shannon has walked the walk and is here to lead other women on their journey to finding their own third option, which happens to be the title of her book, The Third Option.   TWEET: Chasing your dreams is not a binary choice - there is a third option that you can feel better about! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles The hybrid model Don’t we all want a way to “have it all”? Shannon found a hybrid way to have it all, but it didn’t look like she thought it would. She had to readjust her thinking and mindset about what she wanted long-term and figure out how to get there in the short-term. It meant taking a humbling career change and setting aside her ego and pride. She found that there was so much space available as a third option between full-time on-site work and full-time stay-at-home mom.  TWEET: Having it all doesn’t look the same for everyone. You can find the “all” that works for you without feeling guilty! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Going ALL IN How are you at taking risks? Shannon and her husband both had an overwhelming urge to “do something big,” but they knew it would require a big risk and a big move. They cashed in their 401(k)’s, left their jobs, and started their own business. With two young kids, it was scary and terrifying, but they were so compelled that the drive overtook the fear. Their individual corporate experiences and skillsets helped in launching the new company. Shannon says that you can leverage all your background for the next season and the next journey. They both knew this was something they couldn’t dip their toes in gradually, but would have to go ALL IN. TWEET: Big moves require big risks so it’s important to move past your fear into action! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Let’s talk delegation Have you ever thought about delegation in regards to how it helps OTHER people pursue their dreams? It’s hard to let go and have others step in to help, and there is a certain amount of guilt associated with delegation. There are so many myths that we tell ourselves about why delegation is a weakness. It’s simply one of the limiting beliefs that keeps us from pursuing our dreams.  TWEET: Our limiting beliefs are the main thing that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser--”Get very comfortable with not having it all figured out. You will not have all the answers to all of your questions before you make the leap to pursue your dreams.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:45] The realization that a woman CAN have both a career and time at home [4:35] The difficult choice in career change [6:10] Writing the book and getting feedback [6:51] Why they cashed in their 401(k)’s to start a business [11:20] Why THIS company with THIS purpose? “You can have it all. You simply have to know what ALL is for you.” The surname Miles may be familiar, and because Shannon’s husband, Bryan was my guest in episode 11. Shannon and Bryan co-founded Belay Solutions seven years ago. It’s a virtual company that offers self-motivated people the chance to create work (and life) on their terms. Shannon is an amazing role model and an inspiring leader. Working alongside Bryan, she’s built an incredible company, raised two beautiful kids, and has mastered her schedule so she can live life on her terms. And in this podcast episode we dig into the thinking, mindset shifts, and decisions that enabled her to do that. “The Third Option is about doing your work, but also allowing you to prioritize your family and your personal life in a way that you can’t in a traditional office environment.” In this episode Shannon shares how her own life and upbringing became the triggers that inspired her to ‘never settle’. She also reveals the backstory behind Belay and how an accidental, part-time gig at a job she loved became the entire foundation for the company she now runs with Bryan. We also get deep into the power of gratitude and how it’s become an intentional tool that allows her to motivate herself and her team, and inspire her children. I loved chatting with Shannon. I love her passion for service and her commitment to inspire others to create a life that works for them - because she knows it’s possible. So if you’re feeling frustrated that work has resulted in far too many compromises for you, listen into Shannon’s episode and discover more about an option that many people don’t realize exist, but one which could be perfect for you. “Gratitude is mindfulness taking action.” Some questions I ask:You work with your husband. Bryan and Shannon Miles, cofounders of the wildly successful virtual support provider BELAY, have done what many would think impossible: create a unified and thriving culture among a team made up entirely of telecommuters. Turns out you don’t need to work in the same building—or in some cases, even the same state—to foster excellent communication, unparalleled accountability, and good morale. In lieu of a corporate office, Bryan and Shannon have decided to invest in their team instead of infrastructure. What is the future of your workplace going to look like? Suppose you could get a glimpse of what tomorrow looks like, today? The answer has a lot to do with one, big trend in the workplace environment that's already present. This trend has to do with Outstanding Talent. Outstanding Talent is one of the eight critical factors that shape and sustain every healthy-to-flourishing workplace culture, including yours. Outstanding Talent involves attracting, retaining, promoting and rewarding highly capable people on your team. With unemployment at near record lows and with the capabilities of new technologies in full swing, the trend of the virtual workplace is now in high gear. Today we have the pleasure of talking with Shannon Miles, CEO and Co-Founder of BELAY. BELAY's mission is to glorify God by providing solutions that equip their clients with the confidence to climb higher. Shannon was an early adopter of the virtual assistant model. In 2010, she and her husband, Bryan, were inspired to found BELAY--providing virtual support to busy leaders. Find full show notes here http://blog.bcwinstitute.org/s3e17-shannon-miles-belay
