Michelle Curran, call sign MACE, spent three years flying in the United States Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team and was the lead soloist for two of those years flying on the outer left wing of the delta formation. Michelle was the fifth woman ever to be a member of the Thunderbirds and while deployed as a fighter pilot in Afghanistan in 2016, she acquired 163 combat hours. When Michelle left the Thunderbirds in 2021 she continued to pursue her passion for inspiring and motivating people in a slightly different format. Today she's a keynote speaker and the author of the children's book "Upside Down Dreams" and a forthcoming biography. Michelle has done many fantastic podcast appearances about leadership and lessons learned from her time in combat and with the Thunderbirds. In this interview, we go deep on new topics including risk management, vulnerability, the power of extraordinary effort, why you must become an expert learner to become the very best at anything, and the role mountaineering, running and strength training played in helping Michelle prepare for and heal from the physical demands of pulling 9 G's while on the road 240 days a year with the Thunderbirds and more. My uncles used to take me to the airshow at Richards Gebauer air base outside Kansas City every summer when I was a kid and watching the United States Air Force Thunderbirds was one of the most truly awe inspiring things I have ever experienced. Malachowski joins us today as a combat veteran who piloted the amazing F15E Strike Eagle in multiple war zones. She rose to become a flight commander, instructor pilot and flight lead, and has more than 2,300 hours in six different Air Force aircraft. She served as a White House Fellow and was the first female pilot with the famous United States Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. We were delighted to be joined by Major Michelle Curran of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. Major Curran, callsign 'Mace' is just the fifth female Thunderbirds pilot and chatted to us from Las Vegas, discussing her route to becoming a fighter pilot and the challenges she met along the way.

Today's stories: Airmen at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, tested their ability to process and deploy a large amount of personnel and equipment on short notice during exercise Winter Havoc. Also, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds participated in the opening ceremony at the Super Bowl.

I met Mark Smith in 2004.  He was an F16 Pilot with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, and I was doing a story on him and a Thunderbird Crew Chief.  We have been friends since that time, and I have watched him progress through his career from Thunderbird Pilot to White House Fellow and Special Assistant to the Director of NASA, to F16 advanced combat tactics trainer, to Southwest Airlines Pilot and UFC Referee.  If you are a fight fan, you have probably seen him on TV.  He is a father of four amazing kids - and he is African American, which I only mention because his skin color has put up roadblocks for him along his career path. At 49 years of age, he is living his dream life yet he continues to dream of more and greater challenges. It's a lengthy interview, just over an hour, but Mark is a fascinating man and keeping it to an hour almost did us all a disservice. I hope you find Mark as inspiring as I do.
