The company files a lawsuit arguing that Florida violated its constitutional rights by retaliating after former CEO Bob Chapek spoke up against DeSantis's agenda. Does it have a credible legal claim to the deals it cut with the Reedy Creek Improvement District that surrounds Disney World? Or is this the kind of special carveout for a favored business that should be ended anyway? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As a result, Duran collapsed and the other juvenile fled on foot. Duran was transported to a regional trauma center but did not survive. A federal indictment Monday targeted a Clovis man who allegedly banked more than $2.5 million as a go-to buyer of stolen catalytic converters in the Fresno area. Senate Republicans say they will not support replacing Sen. Dianne Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee. Last week, 89-year-old Feinstein asked to be temporarily replaced as she recovers from health issues. Democratic leaders in the Senate say they're open to replacing her until she's able to get back to Washington, but they'll need Republican votes to do that. Ron DeSantis has unveiled the latest act of retaliation against Disney for speaking out against his “don't say gay” law: he's threatening to build a new state prison next to the company's central Florida theme parks. The move is the latest in an ongoing feud that began in March 2022 when Disney's then chief executive Bob Chapek spoke out against a bill limiting discussion of sexuality and gender identity in Florida elementary school classrooms See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Walt Disney Co. has begun its planned layoff of 7,000 employees, with the first round of cuts having started Monday. The axed positions represent 4.2% of Disney's 166,000 U.S.-based employees.Bob Iger, Disney's CEO, first announced the job cuts in a February earnings call. The 7,000 layoffs comprise 30% of $2.5 billion that Disney plans to save in noncontent costs. The February call was Mr. Iger's first since returning as CEO, with his original successor in the role, Bob Chapek, being axed himself last November. In a memo sent Monday, Mr. Iger explained the situation to employees, noting that the cuts are projected to be finished by the end of spring.“Leaders will be communicating the news directly to the first group of impacted employees over the next four days. A second, larger round of notifications will happen in April with several thousand more staff reductions, and we expect to commence the final round of notifications before the beginning of the summer to reach our 7,000-job target,” Mr. Iger wrote in the memo, published in full by CNBC.While sports content is not at risk, employees of ESPN, one of the three main Disney divisions, could be on the chopping block, according to one of the network's main faces, Stephen A. Smith.“ESPN is under the Disney umbrella. They're going to have cuts coming. Hell, for all I know, I might be one of them. Now, I doubt that. But it's possible. No one knows,” Mr. Smith said.Disney's streaming portfolio, which includes ESPN+, is projected to stop losing money in 2024.Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. The Aristocats live action movie was announced with Quest Love directing and doing music for it. Also, the first round of layoffs at the Disney Company are happening. Some of the big cuts are in the divisions dealing with Bob Chapek's focuses: Meta verse and Disney Prime. Sometimes in life, one has to make the hard decision to get rid of things that you no longer want or need, to maybe repair what's broken, and to keep things that spark joy exactly as they are. What if we applied this decisive Marie Kondo-esque philosophy to the Disney World parks? What would we keep, update, and replace in Animal Kingdom? This week, we tackle this difficult question when it comes to some of Animal Kingdom's biggest (and smallest) attractions including Flight of Passage, Dinosaur, Expedition Everest, and Joe's favorite, Feathered Friends in Flight. Also, Angela has ideas about just who could repair the Yeti. It's definitely NOT Bob Iger wearing jean overalls like the long-lost Super Mario Brother. Nonetheless, fan art of that would be appreciated - which you can send to @enchantedearspodcast on Instagram. As always, thank you so much for listening! Have a magical week! In the 1st Quarter earnings report for 2023 Bob Iger shared the status of the Walt Disney Company and made a startling announcement: An Avatar experience is coming to Disneyland! We will look at how this could happen and what it could mean? Where could you put this? There is a way! We'll also look at other announcements made in this event and what it means to those who love to visit Disney Parks and watch their share of all things Disney in theaters and on Disney+. Exciting news is buffered by tough cuts, but it does pave a way for Disney's success as it moves far away from the Bob Chapek era. This podcast as well as all others are brought to you by Performance Journeys, which celebrates its 20th year in bringing best in organization ideas through learning, development and training solutions to the public, private and non-profit sectors. Ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek is set to get a golden parachute worth more than $20 million, according to proxy filings by the entertainment giant reviewed by Insider. This is on top of the $24.2 million he got in total compensation in the company's 2022 fiscal year. Disney said on Tuesday that Chapek would receive $6.5 million in remaining base salary through to the scheduled end date of his employment agreement Google has bid farewell to dozens of in-house massage therapists. Alphabet-owned Google announced last week it was giving the heave-ho to 12,000 employees — the latest tech company to cut back amid a slowing economy. In pointed language, federal regulators rebuffed a request Tuesday from the operator of California's last nuclear power plant that could have smoothed its pathway to securing a longer operating life for its twin reactors. The decision marks the latest skirmish in a long-running fight over the operation and safety of the decades-old Diablo Canyon plant, which Gov. Gavin Newsom says should keep running beyond a scheduled 2025 closure to ward off possible blackouts as the state transitions to solar and other renewable sources. ChatGPT is an AI tool that's taken educators by storm, and some are calling for a ban. Yale lecturer and journalist Joanne Lipman argues to keep it in classrooms, and she considers the various historical innovations that once concerned academics–from calculators to Google. Activist investor Nelson Peltz is aiming for a seat on Disney's board, but the company is opposed and gearing up for a proxy fight. Disney has also named a new chairman of the board, and amid all the drama, the company has not yet explained its recent CEO swap from Bob Iger to Bob Chapek and back again. New York Times columnist and “Disney War” author James Stewart unpacks all the drama at the House of Mouse. In the Labor Department's latest report, the consumer price index fell month over month for the first time since April of 2020. It's a sign that inflation could be moderating, but the Federal Reserve doesn't meet to discuss interest rate hike policy until February. When Bob Iger stepped down as CEO of the Walt Disney Company, he continued to wield influence as executive chairman. His successor in the corner office, Bob Chapek, begrudged Iger's active role. Today, Jody and I discuss the recent changes that have taken place at Disney. I also provide my interpretation of what may have led to it and what we, as leaders, can learn. As many have heard, there was a recent change in leadership at Disney as Bob Chapek stepped down and Bog Iger returned to head the company. When Bob Chapek stepped into his role at Disney, he came in hard, and centralized everything. Unfortunately, centralizing communicates distrust. This led to mistakes and an atmosphere of discontent. I've mentioned before how business is a three-legged stool. Take care of your customers, take care of your employees, and take care of Wall Street. If you don't do one of these, you become unbalanced, and it will topple. A three-legged stool can't stand up when it has missing legs. Great people want to be involved and make a difference. When you communicate distrust, you will lose your best people. When you get a good team, trust them. Give them authority. You aren't as good as you think you are. If you want to get somewhere fast, go alone. If you want to get far, go with people. These are the differences between Chapek and Iger. One led with trust and allowed autonomy, and the other did his best to hold the reins on everything. A good leader knows success comes from people. Value input and be a good listener. Value input above ego, and you will go far. If you are considering visiting Disney to see the changes for yourself, make sure to reach out to Magical Vacation Planners. Today, we need to talk about Bob. Two Bobs, actually: Bob Iger, the former and now current CEO of Disney, and Bob Chapek, the man Iger handpicked as his replacement, who flamed out and was fired by the board, and then, on November 20th, was replaced by Bob Iger. Bobs, man. The heart of this whole thing is total Decoder bait. It's a story about how to structure a company like Disney. Then you add in the complexity of the shift to streaming, the future of TV and movies generally, and the gigantic reputation of a character like Bob Iger, who many people think could plausibly run for president. There's just a lot going on here. Whenever I need to talk Disney, media, and Bobs, I call one person: Julia Alexander, director of strategy at Parrot Analytics and a former reporter at The Verge. Julia pays a lot of attention to the streaming giants, she's sourced inside all the companies battling for our attention, and she has a lot to say about the Bobs.
