fWotD Episode 2712: Thunderbirds (TV series) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 7 October 2024 is Thunderbirds (TV series).Thunderbirds is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, filmed by their production company AP Films (APF) and distributed by ITC Entertainment. It was filmed between 1964 and 1966 using a form of electronic marionette puppetry called "Supermarionation" combined with scale model special effects sequences. Two series, totalling 32 fifty-minute episodes, were made; production ended with the sixth episode of the second series after Lew Grade, APF's financial backer, failed in his efforts to sell the programme to US network television.Set in the 2060s, Thunderbirds was a follow-up to the earlier Supermarionation productions Four Feather Falls, Supercar, Fireball XL5 and Stingray. It concerns the exploits of International Rescue: a life-saving organisation with a secret base on an island in the Pacific Ocean. International Rescue operates a fleet of technologically-advanced rescue vehicles, headed by five craft called the Thunderbird machines. The main characters are the leader of International Rescue, ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy, and his five adult sons, who pilot the Thunderbirds.Thunderbirds premiered in September 1965 on the ITV network and has since aired in at least 66 countries. Besides tie-in merchandise, it was followed by two feature films: Thunderbirds Are Go and Thunderbird 6. Periodically repeated, it was adapted for radio in the 1990s and has influenced many TV programmes and other media. Its other adaptations include an anime reimagining (Thunderbirds 2086), a live-action film (Thunderbirds) and a part-CGI, part-live-action remake (Thunderbirds Are Go). Three supplementary episodes, based on tie-in audio plays and made using the same puppet techniques as the original, have also been produced.Widely regarded as the Andersons' most popular and commercially successful series, Thunderbirds has been praised for its special effects, directed by Derek Meddings, and its musical score by Barry Gray. It is also remembered for its title sequence, which begins with an oft-quoted countdown by Jeff Tracy voice actor Peter Dyneley: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Thunderbirds Are Go!" A real-life search and rescue service, the International Rescue Corps, was named after the organisation featured in the series. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Monday, 7 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Thunderbirds (TV series) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're diving into the flashy and often thrilling world of cinematic money scenes as we count down our Top 5 Cash Scenes in movies. We'll also discuss the complexities of financial manipulation in The Laundromat (2019) and switch gears to the animated high stakes of Thunderbirds Are Go.Top 5 Cash Scenes in Movies:The Dark Knight (2008) - The Joker's notorious scene where he burns a mountain of cash is not only visually striking but also serves as a profound statement on his anarchistic views towards money and power. No Country for Old Men (2007) - The suspenseful scene where Llewelyn Moss discovers a case full of cash amidst a drug deal gone wrong is pivotal. It sets the tone for the cat-and-mouse chase that underpins the movie's tension.Scarface (1983) - Tony Montana's famous “money laundering” montage showcases his rise to power. The visual of cash flowing through counting machines as he builds his empire is iconic in cinema history. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Jordan Belfort's indulgent lifestyle fueled by ill-gotten gains is epitomized in the scene where he and his cohorts toss cash around their office, highlighting the excess and moral decay of his financial practices. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - The chaotic scramble for cash buried under the "big W" provides not only comedic gold but also a critical look at greed and desperation as every character vies for the hidden treasure. The Laundromat, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep, delves into the shadowy world of financial fraud and the repercussions of the Panama Papers. The film intertwines multiple narratives to explore how money laundering affects people from different walks of life. While it aims to shed light on complex financial deceptions, the film's sprawling approach to storytelling sometimes dilutes its impact, leaving us wishing for a tighter narrative focus. Shifting to a more family-friendly portrayal of high-tech adventures, Thunderbirds Are Go revisits the beloved world of the Tracy family and their life-saving missions. Although not focused on cash per se, the show's funding by the secretive and wealthy Tracy family and their high-stakes rescues offer a lighter way to discuss the power and responsibilities that come with great wealth. We hated it.Whether you're drawn to the dramatic flair of cash flying around in films or intrigued by the intricate depictions of financial malfeasance in modern cinema, today's episode promises a rich exploration of money's cinematic allure and its real-world implications. Join us as we unravel the tales of treasure and treachery that make these cash scenes so compelling.

Renowned British producer Fran Ashcroft has announced his forthcoming album 'The Songs That Never Were', to be released on February 23 via Think Like a Key Music. While only his sophomore album as a solo artist, Ashcroft's name stands behind dozens of other albums that have come to grace the music plane over the past few decades. Ahead of this, he presents the lead track 'Waiting For The Britpop Revival', a 2-track offering with a traditional A-side and B-side. Longtime producer for artists big and small, and formerly of British power-pop trailblazers The Monos, Fran Ashcroft has recorded in some of the world's most renowned studios and with some iconic artists, including Damon Albarn (Blur), Abbey Road Studios, Thunderbirds Are Go!, PRT Records and Studios, Spin Jupiter Spin (Dandy Warhols), , Darling Nikkie (Lords of Acid) Big Fish Music in Japan, and Fruits Der Mer Records, to mention a few. A treasure trove of recordings that defies time, Ashcroft describes this album as "a bridge across time" and "a collaboration between myself and me of fifty years ago", made possible by two broken tape recorders and a little bit of AI technology. Here, he ingeniously constructs a sonic viaduct spanning 50 years to allow something novel to take shape amidst the echoes of his past - one where old and new harmonise in a truly innovative yet delightfully vintage experience. "I've never made a record quite like this one. Nobody has. it was like building a bridge of time between my present day self and me from 50 years ago. The song I heard in my head at 5 a.m. that morning reminded me of one I'd written many years before, which I was never quite happy with. I thought, you could almost put this new tune right over it. So I dug the old tape out of the archives to see if I was right. And I was - the chords were the same, and it was even in the same key! If I could only remove and replace the vocals on the old mono recording, it would be an entirely new song," says Fran Ashcroft.

The first ever episode of Thunderbirds, the revolutionary British TV show starring puppets, aired on September 30th, 1965. It was instantly a hit in Britain, and elsewhere in the world, but its failure to captivate a US audience led to its untimely demise after just two seasons. The show used a system, coined by its creators as “Supermarionation” which involved pre-recording the voices, which would then be played back during filming. Each marionette's head contained filters which converted the dialogue into pulses, which in turn travelled to solenoids in the puppet's lips. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss why each marionette needed three heads; look at how the Mercury Seven – the first batch of Nadi astronauts – were honoured by the show; and reveal which of the three of us still has Thunderbirds merch from when they were a kid. Greg and Tom interview Justin T. Lee from Gazelle Automations. Justin is the creator of the Star Trek The Next Generation animated sequence in the style of the Star Trek the Animated Series that we discussed in our last episode. We also talk to Justin about his work on new Thunderbirds episodes in the original style using SUPERMARIONATION. Listen in on our lively discussion about Animation Puppetry and film making in general.THUNDERBIRDSGazelle Automations' Lindsay and Justin Lee wore many hats on this production (as did everyone on the crew), including leading the puppetry on these 50th anniversary episodes of the British sci-fi series Thunderbirds for ITV, created with classic Supermarionation techniques used in the 1960s.For their job as puppetry supervisors, they painted, wigged, strung and led the performance of the marionettes, which had to look and move like those from the original 1960s series. For certain characters, work was done many times over to get the squint of an eye or hairline to match the original puppet as closely as possible. The episodes premiered at the British Film Institute in August 2016 and are now streaming on BritBox in the UK. A nationwide Japanese cinema, streaming and Blu-ray release in January 2022 marked the original show's 55th anniversary. For more information about the company continuing to specialize in Supermarionation, visit www.century21films.co.uk.About Gazelle AutomationsProducer/puppeteer Lindsay Lee and VFX artist/puppeteer Justin T. We're back with another episode of Even Baddies Wear Helmets! And, oh boy, is it a fun one - this week, we're talking about voice acting for animation. So buckle in, because there will be pro tips, and there will be silliness. Whether you're playing a vampire, squirrel or talking train, voice work demands an immense amount of skill, craft and versatility. Luckily, our guest this week has all three in buckets. Rasmus Hardiker has voiced a plethora of animated characters - to name but a few, he's Alfur in Hilda (Netflix), Fleeker in Floogals (Channel 5), Scott and Alan Tracy in Thunderbirds Are Go! (ITV), Resus Negative in Scream Street, Walter in Dennis and Gnasher, and Count Duckula in DangerMouse (all CBBC). In this episode, Rasmus discusses the joys of improvisation, loveable fools and learning on the job. Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds was originally written, produced and filmed at SEGRO’s Slough Trading Estate between 1964 and 1966. It became a huge TV hit, and has returned many times over the years to inspire the imagination of millions of children. In this episode, we speak to Jamie Anderson. He is Gerry's son and the director of Anderson Entertainment.
Jamie Anderson, whose father Gerry Anderson gave us Supercar, Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds, UFO and Captain Scarlet, joins Matthew Sweet for a look back on the music of Barry Gray, the man who provided the musical voice to Anderson’s classic small screen creations. Together, Matthew and Jamie consider the varied aspects of Gray’s style, his pioneering use of electronics, his working relationship with Gerry Anderson, and his legacy. The programme features key musical moments from children’s TV classics, Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90; and also some of the later live action series such as UFO and Space 1999. The Classic Score of the week is Barry Gray’s music for the full length big screen supermarionation feature, ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’.

There are concerns about whether a new theme park in north Kent will be able to attract enough visitors, as it's revealed another entertainment company has pulled out of the project. A deal between London Resort and Paramount was dropped in 2017 - and we now know the makers of Wallace and Gromit are also no longer involved. Earlier this week we told you bosses, who want to spend more than 3 billion pounds building the park on the Swanscombe peninsular between Dartford and Gravesend, had signed an agreement with ITV studios. Some of the rides and attractions will be based on children's shows Thunderbirds Are Go and Robozuna. https://www.kentonline.co.uk/
Part 4 of our Southwest Series continues with the Marfa Ghost Lights, an unexplained light phenomena with unknown origins, and the Thunderbird, one of the most bizarre urban legends. Phillip brings 'Thunderbirds Are Go' (1966) to Wayne; the first big screen rendition of the popular supermarianation television series.
