Uphill Habits for Success Watch video version here! In this edition of Thursday Thoughts, Chris Honeycutt explores the concept of uphill habits for achieving success, referencing John Maxwell's insights and the teachings of the Apostle Paul from 1 Corinthians 9. The focus is on the need for hard work, clear goals, and the discipline necessary to overcome 'downhill habits'. Chris discusses the importance of a work ethic inherited from his family, the challenges and rewards of hard work through personal experiences, and offers three recommendations for instilling uphill habits: getting a coach for accountability, joining a group for mutual growth, and adopting new habits or hobbies that require discipline. The aim is to inspire listeners to work hard toward their goals, seeking out tools and community support to transform their lives and fulfill their dreams. 00:00 Welcome to Thursday Thoughts: Uphill Habits Explored 00:19 Diving into Scripture: The Apostle Paul's Insight 01:01 Setting and Achieving Lofty Goals 01:45 The Power of Hard Work: Personal and Professional Growth 03:54 Uphill Habits According to John Maxwell 08:24 The Importance of Coaching and Accountability 11:10 Practical Steps to Cultivate Success 13:56 Concluding Thoughts and Call to Action Learn more about Chris at: www.chrishoneycutt.com Or his coaching group
This is the final message of our series, Uphill Habits.
One of the most difficult things for us to do in life is be consistent, no matter the circumstances. It's easy to remain consistent when things are easy and everything is working; however, we tend to quit being consistent when it's difficult and we see no change. But what if our consistency in the difficult moments is what would bring about growth, change, and breakthrough? In I Corinthians 15:58, Paul encouraged that we remain steadfast — that we not allow our circumstances to sway our trust, faith, and confidence in the Lord. It's through our consistency that we are able to see the completion and finished work of what God has for us.
In this one passage of scripture, we see two stories that needed a miracle from Jesus. But specifically, we see the lady who had been subjected to bleeding for 12 years. See, it's a lot easier to believe Jesus will change your story when it's a new problem than it is to keep believing that when it's an old problem. For this lady, it wasn't her pastor, doctor, spouse, or friends that gave her the strength to believe. It was her trust in Jesus, it was her faith. Jesus said, your faith has healed you. In this message, we look at 3 habits to develop and/or strengthen if we're going to see a positive change in our outcome.
This is Week 3 of our series, Uphill Habits.
This is Week 2 of our series, Uphill Habits.
As we enter a new year, we tend to pray for new things. We pray for God to bless us with more, so that we can experience greater — More talents, more opportunities, more abilities. We read the Bible, we pray, we learn from God's word; and yet, we've made a habit of missing the most important step — putting His word to use. We won't see God provide more until we first are willing to take what He's given us, and put it to use.
When it comes to believing and working toward anything great, we tend to disqualify ourselves in our own minds. It's often easier for us to believe what we're facing is stronger and more able than we are. For the Israelites in Numbers 13, they viewed the people in Canaan as giants, while they viewed themselves as grasshoppers. However, Caleb was able to adjust his vision and see the Canaanites for what they were — already defeated. God had spoken and said it was already handled, and Caleb shifted his vision to match God's word over what it may have looked like. Because of this, he was able to experience all that God promised.

As we finish our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, in part 4 of our series, Uphill Habits, Pastor Scotty Priest emphasizes Habit #4: The Habit of Community. "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:23-25 We are created to live in relationship, regularly connecting with people. We need each other to grow and propel us forward. Do you have people in your life who love you enough to tell you your blind spots? Find a group who will encourage and challenge you. Proverbs 4:25-27, Proverbs 13:20, Proverbs 27:17
(Romans 12:2 MSG) … fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Habit […]
"I am the church and I am here for the world" As we continue in our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, in part 3 our series, Uphill Habits, Pastor Scotty Priest emphasizes Habit #3: The Habit of Sacrifice, "offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship" Rom 12:1. Our sacrifice means giving up one thing for something else we believe is worth more. Where am I sacrificing? What do I need to let go? "Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, is sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. but if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal." John 12:24-25 MSG Isaiah 26:8, Proverbs 4:25-27, Romans 12:1, Gal. 2:20
• Most people have UPHILL HOPES and DOWN HILL HABITS. (Romans 12:2 MSG) … fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. As we continue in our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, in part 2 our series, Uphill Habits, Pastor Scotty Priest emphasizes Habit #2: The Habit of My Words. "If Jesus is Lord of your life, He needs to the Lord of your lips." Our words are poison or fruit, we get to choose. They have the unique power to script and steer our lives. "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14 Psalm 143:3, James 3:1-12, Proverbs 4:25-27; 18:21, and Isaiah 26:8.
• Most people have UPHILL HOPES and DOWN HILL HABITS. (John 4:10 NLT) Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” √ HOPE for the FUTURE. (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT) For I know the plans […]
"Most people have uphill hopes, but downhill habits." For the first message kicking off our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. "A productive life begins with a prepared heart." Theme verse: "Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your truth, we eagerly wait for you; for your name and your renown are the desire of our souls" Isaiah 26:8 In Part 1 our new series, Uphill Habits, Pastor Scotty Priest emphasizes habit #1: The habit of first, and the power of priority. We're not talking about new year's resolutions, but we are talking about setting our lives in a direction towards God for this year that could make all the difference. Proverbs 4:25-27; Haggai 1:2-7
