Pumped hydro energy storage is still by far the largest form of energy storage in the world, representing more than 90% of storage capacity worldwide. The theory behind it is simple. Water is pumped into an upper reservoir (that is, one at a higher elevation), and when electricity is needed, the water is allowed to […]

The first film is a cynical version of the book, which, depending on how you see it, is either sheer Paul Verhoeven brilliance or horrible bastardization of Heinlien's original work and intent. This week, Thomas had to step out, which is too bad as the bigger discussion was right up his alley. Still, Scott more than made up for it.

Marine Cabirou is awesome! The French rider has tasted the top step of the podium multiple times and won an overall downhill title but has had her fair share of injuries along the way in a somewhat short space of time. She never fails to have a smile on her face throughout the setbacks. Hear about her upbringing, how she deals with setbacks, winning and what makes her tick. Shoutout to Scott Sports, a long-time partner of mine and supporter of the Podcast, for making this episode possible. Obviously, as a sponsored athlete I only have good things to say about the product, but if there is one product I'd push regardless it is the Stego Plus Helmet I spend a lot of time on many different bikes, from riding trail and enduro to the occasional XC rip. What's cool is having a helmet that works in all of those situations, and for me, the SCOTT Stego plus is just that. The fit is great, looks super good, and keeps me safe on a variety of terrain.

In this episode, Dean and Paula are joined by friends and athletes Lee and Suzanne Anderson. Coach Paula, Suzanne, and Lee share their experiences racing the Jack and Jill Downhill Marathon outside of Seattle Washington. Coach Dean shares his experience spectating the race. This is an awesome venue for racing which takes place on the former railroad trail now known as the Iron Horse Trail. It includes a train tunnel that is over two miles long. The gradual downhill is very subtle for most of the race. This is a great course to race a fast time and possibly Boston Qualify. Key spectating locations are around mile 11, 16, 21, and the finish. RyR is a team of runners and triathletes who receive comprehensive and customized coaching. The team name has dual meanings. The first is based in Hebrews 12:1 in which Christians are instructed to run the race set before us. In this context, RyR stands for Run your Race, with an emphasis on meeting you (the athlete) where you are and coming alongside you to help you reach your goals. The verse emphasizes patience, endurance, and perseverance. These qualities are essential for success as both athletes and coaches. The second meaning is based on the enduring friendship and marriage between the founding coaches, Dean and Paula Roberts. In this context, RyR stands for Roberts and Roberts. While our primary mission is to help athletes set and reach fitness and performance goals, we understand that this must occur within the context of each athlete's daily life. We strive to form an individual relationship with each athlete and make sure weekly training fits seamlessly into family life and work schedules.
Episode 053 Beau Brown Legendary Downhill Skater and Long Time Icon in the Skateboard Industry Beau Brown is a good friend of mine. He has deep roots in the skateboard culture. He grew up in Huntington Beach in a very pioneering time in skateboarding. He raced Stand Up Downhill Skateboards primarily but skated a little of everything. He found his way into the business side of skateboarding, selling skateboard stuff for many years for Madrid, Tracker, Brand X, and worked with me at Acme Skateboards / Abc Board Supply for over a decade as well. He worked at Etnies/Sole Technology after Acme, and eventually made his way back into the deck market and today still manages manufucturing decks and other goods for some major players in skateboarding. Beau has always been dependable, stable, and independent, he is a good man to have on your side. We have been through a lot together, weddings, children being born, crazy days growing like wildfire at work, and we've watched some important stuff in our lives crumble in front of us. We've side by side through life's struggles emotionally, physically, and emotionally. Basically, you don't get better long term friends than this. The best part of doing this podcast is just having conversations with my friends like Beau, who have been a big part of my life, and a big part of skateboarding, sometimes in the foreground, and sometimes in the background. Hope you enjoy meeting or learning something new. Thanks for listening.
Fresh off a fantastic race Brent Miller joins me to talk all about the Beast of Big Creek. It was an incredible day of racing and I loved hearing Brent stories from the trails, that I, as the race director didn't experience just sitting in camp waiting for runners to cross the finish line and hoping everything would go smoothly. Thanks to all the runners, volunteers, helpers and sponsors who made this incredible event happen. We're already excited for 2023. Back in the USA, baby! Last weekend, the World Cup circus headed across the pond for the first time this season to Snowshoe, West Virginia. After years of relatively dry racing, the east coast provided, welcoming riders with plenty of rain and slippery conditions. Not many made it down without having a near-death moment (or two), and it might have been the toughest track raced in years. This week, the crew discusses Dakotah's now infamous race run inside line, how the Snowshoe track humbled the world's best racers, the tripod corner that ended a few race runs, the rise of Ronan Dunne, who is responsible for track maintenance and safety during a race weekend, result breakdowns for each class, and then they close things out with some pre-Mont-Sainte-Anne chatter. Enjoy!

After two years, the World Cup circus returned to the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains for an exciting weekend of dry, hot, fast, and tight racing. With a brand new track on a completely different side of the mountain, gone were the steep, technical sections we are used to seeing in Andorra, and instead, the track was made up of blistering fast off-cambers and high-speed turns with no shortage of loose shale and dust. Times were tight, and the margin for error was even smaller. This week, we discuss if World Cup downhill should assign permanent race numbers, if selling more downhill bikes is the answer to the longevity of the sport, the multiple death-defying sections on this year's track, Loic Bruni's softer-than-average suspension setup, Jackson Goldstone having the fastest time of the day, plus our usual deep dive into results and overall standings. Enjoy!
