Currently based out of Mongolia, Antonio is a true renaissance man: martial artist, author, researcher, professor, long-time Black Belt Magazine columnist, pro MMA fighter and so much more! Antonio and I discuss his life-long journey in the martial arts, being one of the only foreigners to ever live in the actual Shaolin temple, earning a Phd completely in Chinese, as well our experiences training together in Southeast Asia! If you are not familiar with Antonio's work, he has literally HUNDREDS OF VIDEOS on YouTube (brooklynmonk1) including his long running documentary series ‘Martial Arts Odyssey'-which I HIGHLY recommend watching if you are at all interested in martial arts training in Asia. Hi Atlas and Listeners, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and speak with Robert Vargas he is (In my opinion) one of the greatest artists in history. Tune in as we speak about stories that molded him into the artist he is today and the legacy he is leaving for future generations. Robert's art and talent is for every person from every walk of life to enjoy and relate to from the Native Americans the inhabited Los Angeles to The Golden Boys of our society. To gather more perspective on who Robert is please read the piece from wescover.com below. Robert is not only an Artist, he is a real Angelino and it shows in how real his work really is. Please take a listen, I hope you enjoy I know I had fun recording this episode with an old friend. "Robert Vargas is a contemporary artist known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events. He was born and raised in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Vargas is a leading creative force in the revitalization of Downtown LA's art scene. His paintings and drawings infuse classic genres of portraiture and nudes with an avant-garde explosivity that not only captures the visage and likeness of his subjects but seems to excavate the intimate aspects of their character. Vargas selects his subjects intuitively at his highly attended live-painting sessions, creating powerful and sublime representations of the human connection through his portraiture. His visual vocabulary pulls from life experience, a viscerally sensual approach to line and texture, and an almost mannerist choreography of abstraction and representation that combine to unforgettable effect in his portraits. His best-known works include a City of L.A. commissioned mural "Can't Stop" of legendary Suicidal Tendencies frontman, "Mike Muir, and his "Warrior Odyssey" mural of skateboard Icon and Z-boy legend, Tony Alva for the Kinney Hotel in Venice. In 2013, Vargas was a key figure in helping Los Angeles lift its street art ban while creating his masterpiece, "Our Lady Of DTLA" a four-story mural on Spring street in the heart of downtown L.A. In May 2011, Vargas was named one of LA Weekly's People of the Year and was featured on a limited-edition cover of the issue. His public mural works both in Los Angeles and throughout the world, he sees as a means to reach a wider audience and promote accessible art and community through the creative process. Continuing to shape the way the city's history is written, in the Summer of 2017 he will begin work on his biggest project yet: a fourteen-story mural in L.A. that will rank as the largest mural in the world by a single artist."

Sitting through the orientation is one of the most demeaning experiences of his life. The manager tells Antonio, “Many of our teachers are intelligent. Doing movies and TV is such a quick way to fame and fortune that the producers hold all of the cards. As a struggling up-and-comer Antonio is no position to say NO, or even to negotiate most of the time. When C3PO played hologram chess with Chewbaka he learned that fair or not fair, if he won, the Wookie would just rip his arms out of their sockets. So, he let Chewbaka win the game. Trying to get on TV is a similar experience. TV is a Wookie and I am C3PO. Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo is a martial arts and adventure author living in Asia. Antonio Graceffo continues to be amazed by his roommate, Mashooq. Back in his village, Mashooq probably equated being in possession of many goats to being popular with the ladies. If he was flying to America and customs officials seized his goats he would be thinking, “Oh, great! When he was 21 years old, Antonio Graceffo got a part in the Chuck Norris movie, Delta Force 2. At the time, he believed it was his huge break, which would lead to super stardom. Instead, it would be more than a decade until he had a part in a movie again. Based on that movie, no one ever asked him to sign an autograph, and Kenner never made an Antonio Graceffo Delta Force action figure. Working on the Chuck Norris film was an impact-full and hilarious experience which, like so many of Antonio’s significant life-moments, meant a lot to Antonio but neither Chuck nor anyone else will remember. The experience spawned the story, Chuck Norris Doesn’t Know my Name” Which Antonio has recently released as a PDF e-book (e-story) on his website http://speakingadventure.com/chuck-norris This podcast is composed of a few outtakes from the longer story. In addition to making laugh at and pity Antonio, it will leave you wondering: Does the hero ever earn the money for his sister’s dowry, so she can marry? Do they ever catch the murder? Is the DNA evidence enough to get a conviction? If any of these questions is bothering you, you will need to find the answers somewhere else.
