We often assume that the safest places must also be the most predictable — tidy, orderly, maybe even a little dull. But after travelling through some of the world's safest countries, I discovered something more interesting. Safety doesn't remove adventure; it simply changes its shape. Strong institutions, trust between citizens, and well-run infrastructure create a different kind of freedom for travellers. The real question isn't whether safety makes a place boring — it's how to find the perfect balance between security and discovery. You can also follow The Top Travel Destinations on social media for updates: Instagram: @thetoptraveldestinationsX: @becreativekev

What if you didn't know where you were traveling until the day you left? Lillian Rafson, Founder and CEO of @packupgo_travel, shares how a random conversation in a hostel in Riga led her to move back to Pittsburgh and start a surprise travel company at 23. Turning a simple idea into a company that has sent more than 50,000 travelers to 300+ destinations across the U.S. takes more than good marketing — it requires trust, logistics, and a deep understanding of how people actually want to travel. The conversation explores how surprise travel works, why travelers willingly give up control, and what it takes to design trips that prioritize discovery over endless planning.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/globetrotters-podcast--5023679/support.

"All I wanted was time" - Tracey Emin, Strozzi Gallery DocumentaryToday I share a travel story for International Women's Day about a glorious art and life moment in Florence from 2025.  There are beautiful things that happen along the way that stay with you. I reflect on my experience and joy while walking in the Centro Storico of Florence and discovering that there was an exhibition of Tracey Emin's work on that week at the Palazzo Strozzi. It had been a long time since I had seen her work and remembered her brilliant exhibition in Sydney in the early 2000s. Today I honour Women and Art and the creative genius of Tracey Emin. I describe the effect of seeing her work in real life as "subtle and profound" and always significant. When you see Emin's work in real life you don't forget. You remember everything. These days the Palazzo Strozzi has some wonderful exhibitions - Mark Rothko opens next week and more recently there was Fra Angelico.  So make time to see what is happening at The Strozzi Gallery if you visit Firenze. And they have a nice cafe downstairs too that you can enjoy in the renaissance court yard. Enjoy, Michelle xA Florentine Cafe & Musings on Women and Art in ItalyShownotes A Writer in Italy InstagramSubstack - At My TableMichelle's BooksMusical Scores by Richard Johnston© 2026  A Writer In Italy - travel, books, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston © 2026Support the show

In this episode of the Special Culinary Series, I'm joined by Chef Neha Mishra - the visionary behind Kinoya in Dubai and the woman many first knew as the “Ramen Girl” hosting intimate supper clubs before building one of the city's most celebrated restaurants. On this episode, Neha takes us across continents through flavor, philosophy and deeply personal food memories - from Tokyo's ramen counters to the Himalayas at 16,000 feet. Destination Highlights & Culinary Insights: 1. Japan - The art of perfection.   Japan, for Neha, represents devotion - to craft, to ingredients and to doing one thing exceptionally well. • Ramen culture and why simplicity equals mastery. • How to explore Japan on a budget - eating where locals eat. • Traditional Japanese breakfasts and bento spreads. • Public transport in Japan makes exploration seamless. • “Memory Lane” (Omoide Yokocho-style alleyways) for affordable eats.           https://en.shinjuku-omoide.com/ 2. India – Where food is a ‘love language'. Neha talks about the diversity of India and how every region there is its own eco system with distinct culinary identities. A trip to India is a reminder that food isn't about complexity, it's about connection. • The architecture and soul of South Bombay(South Mumbai). • South Indian cuisine as one of the most underrated global food cultures. • A transformative trip to Spiti Valley near Ladakh and mindful meals at 16,000 feet in the Himalayas. • Single-ingredient cooking. 3. Italy – Slow living and Sacred tables. • Produce-driven cooking: olives, olive oil, tomatoes. • Landscape and longevity and how environment shapes cuisine. 4. Georgia – Unexpected beauty. Beyond the food, it is the landscape and culture that linger. This is a destination where hospitality and history intertwine and is definitely a place that deserves far more global attention than it receives. 5. Vietnam, Thailand and Southeast Asia - The street food masters. Southeast Asia is where street food becomes storytelling. 6. Brazil – Best street food. • Sunday markets and neighborhood food culture. • Street discoveries that rival fine dining. 7. Mexico – Culinary immersion. #210 - What if travel wasn't a checklist but a classroom? I sat with Joy Owens—mother of two, CEO and co-owner of Butler Travel, and veteran of 60 countries—to explore how faith, service, and slow travel can shape a family and a life. From a grandmother who's visited more than 80 countries to Joy's first trip at three months old, her story moves through mission work in Zambia and Kenya, a scrappy road journey toward Argentina, and a solo $10-a-day push to Panama that turned from a rat-infested night into radical hospitality.Joy walks us through teaching in Honduras and Taiwan, the culture shock of moving to Alaska, and why she and her husband bought Butler Travel to serve nonprofits and missionaries with complex ticketing and group logistics. She shares a gripping emergency reroute for a family in Tanzania that helped their daughter reach lifesaving care, and she opens up about surrendering control when December bills loomed, only to witness the agency's busiest month on record. For Joy, faith isn't an accessory; it's how she navigates risk, money, parenting, and purpose. We also dig into the messy magic of traveling with little kids: babies on planes during the quiet months of 2020, a six-week Europe adventure with bikes and tents, and the art of choosing your hard when tantrums and missed trains collide. Joy makes the case for slow travel—one hub, deeper days, fewer repacks—and tells unforgettable stories, from crossing open water in foldable kayaks to a budget misadventure on a Greek island complete with a kindly, very unbothered nude local offering fruit and cheese. If you lead mission trips, plan family journeys, or crave meaningful travel that builds resilience and empathy, this conversation is your map. From Vacation Mode to Purpose-Driven TravelLike many of us, Ting Ting didn't always travel with intention. Early trips were about fun, escape, and ticking destinations off a list. But over time, something shifted. Nature-based experiences, cultural immersion, and meaningful connections started to matter more than luxury or convenience. She describes herself as a traveler who lives between extremes — sometimes deeply planned, sometimes wildly spontaneous. And honestly? That balance is part of the magic. Whether it's booking a flight last-minute or committing to a long retreat-style journey, Ting Ting believes travel should feel alive, not scripted.“Traveling should be about connection and purpose.”  What It's Really Like Traveling as a Retreat LeaderTraveling solo is one thing. Traveling as a retreat leader is a whole different adventure.Ting Ting explains that hosting group trips means holding space for others while navigating unfamiliar environments — often in destinations that challenge comfort zones. Safety, hydration, logistics, emotions… it's all part of the role. But seeing a destination through fresh eyes — even places she's visited many times, like Egypt — never gets old.And yes, she lovingly compares leading groups to herding kittens.   Mongolia: An Ancestral Adventure Like No OtherThis episode's heart beats strongest in Mongolia. After discovering her Mongolian ancestry through a DNA test, Ting Ting felt called to experience the land not as a tourist — but as someone seeking connection. What followed was one of her most intense and transformative journeys yet.She lived with nomadic families, rode horses across vast open landscapes, and learned from Eagle Hunters whose traditions have been passed down for generations.“Mongolia offers a deep connection to ancestry.”The Reality of Nomadic LifeLet's clear something up: nomadic life is not the romantic fantasy Instagram makes it out to be.Days start before sunrise. Every task has a purpose. Every resource is used fully — even burning yak dung for heat. Ting Ting shares how living this way revealed just how resilient, resourceful, and deeply connected to nature these communities are.“Nomadic life is more challenging than it appears.”The experience was humbling, grounding, and eye-opening — and yes, included outdoor bathrooms, long days, and moments of real discomfort.  Why Ancestry Travel Hits DifferentThere's something powerful about traveling somewhere tied to your roots.Ting Ting reflects on how knowing her ancestry changed the way she experienced Mongolia — how the land, people, and traditions felt familiar in an unexplainable way. It wasn't just about learning history; it was about belonging.Ancestry travel, she explains, isn't always easy — but it often leads to the deepest growth.  Facing Fear & Traveling Off the GridMongolia and China often feel intimidating to travelers — and Ting Ting doesn't sugarcoat that reality. Extreme weather, challenging terrain, and cultural differences are part of the deal. But safety, she emphasizes, comes from understanding local customs, traveling with intention, and staying curious instead of fearful. Some moments tested her limits. Some moments made her question why she signed up. And those moments? They're often the ones that change you the most.  Adventure Destinations Around the WorldWhile Mongolia stands out as one of her most demanding trips, Ting Ting has led adventures across the globe — from Egypt to Bali to Mexico. Each destination offers something different:Egypt surprises travelers with warmth, history, and human connection.Bali and Puerto Escondido, Mexico require intentional planning to stay authentic.Group travel amplifies experiences in ways solo trips can't.The key? Going deeper than the highlights and staying open to the unexpected.  Travel Tips You'll Actually Want to RememberBefore booking your next adventure or retreat-style trip, Ting Ting offers some real-world advice:Expect discomfort — growth lives therePrepare for cultural differencesUnderstand health requirements (yes, vaccines matter)Pack intentionally (you don't need as much as you think)Learn from past travel mistakes — everyone has them“Personal growth often comes from challenging experiences.”  Who Are Adventure Retreats Really For?Adventure retreats aren't just for hardcore explorers — but they're also not for everyone. They're perfect for travelers craving connection, personal growth, and meaningful experiences. If you need total control, predictability, or luxury at every turn, easing into adventure travel might be the move. The reward? Perspective, confidence, and memories that stick with you long after you return home.  Final TakeawayThis episode is a reminder that travel isn't just about where you go — it's about who you become along the way.Whether you're drawn to ancestry travel, off-the-grid destinations, or adventure with purpose, Ting Ting Guan's story proves that the most meaningful journeys often challenge us — and change us.

The Unexpected Path to Cycling  Nathaniel's journey began on a small family farm in rural Oregon, where he faced significant challenges during his childhood. Struggling with family dynamics and a deep-seated desire for justice, he initially pursued a political career, enrolling in a prestigious liberal arts college. However, disillusionment with the political system led him to drop out and seek a new path. This pivotal moment was the catalyst for his life-changing adventure. After a transformative experience in nature with a friend, Nathaniel found himself on a one-way ticket to Europe with a bicycle, ready to embrace the unknown.Embracing Minimalism and the Vagabond Lifestyle  When Nathaniel and his friend set out on their bikes, they embraced a lifestyle of minimalism and spontaneity. With just a few changes of clothes and a commitment to living without money, they relied on the kindness of strangers. One innovative strategy they employed was the "Magic Note"—a simple piece of paper in various languages asking for food donations. This approach not only provided sustenance but also fostered deep connections with the communities they encountered.Life Lessons on the Road  Cycling through Europe, Nathaniel faced numerous challenges that tested his resilience. The duo often found themselves in unpredictable situations, relying on their instincts and the generosity of others. Nathaniel reflects on a particular mindset that guided their journey: to appreciate every moment as if it were the last while also embracing the wonder of new experiences. This perspective allowed them to engage fully with their surroundings.Wild Encounters and Unexpected Friendships Throughout their travels, Nathaniel experienced both the highs and lows of human interaction. One particularly harrowing experience involved a robbery in London, where a group of street kids took advantage of their hospitality. Despite the danger, Nathaniel managed to stand his ground, which ultimately led to an unexpected bond with another stranger—a former criminal who turned out to be one of the kindest individuals he had ever met. This contrast between danger and kindness underscored a vital life lesson: every experience is an opportunity for growth.Nathaniel Allenby's extraordinary journey is a testament to the power of adventure, resilience, and human connection. His experiences remind us that life is unpredictable, and embracing the unknown can lead to profound personal growth. The key takeaways from Nathaniel's story include the importance of living in the moment, the value of community and kindness, and the realization that every individual we meet has a unique story to tell. Whether through cycling or any other form of travel, Nathaniel's journey inspires us to seek our own adventures and embrace the beauty of life on the road.
