In deze aflevering vertelt Salomo van Mook hoe Barter ontstond uit een gezamenlijke frustratie aan de keukentafel. Hij en zijn co-founders hadden samen al ervaring opgebouwd in branding, marketing en ondernemerschap, en ze zagen twee groepen die elkaar maar moeilijk vonden: merken met beperkte budgetten en creators zonder agency. Barter verbindt die twee. Merken zetten hun overcapaciteit of product in als marketingbudget, en creators krijgen het product — verder niet betaald. Daardoor melden alleen creators zich aan die het product ook echt leuk vinden, wat de geloofwaardigheid van samenwerkingen exponentieel vergroot. Het idee werd op de meest simpele manier getest: een lelijke Instagram-advertentie met een paar honderd euro budget. De dag erna waren er zeshonderd aanmeldingen. Voor merken volgde een klassieke aanpak: langs de deuren, pitchen, uitleggen. Daarna schakelde het team snel over op een sterkere go-to-marketstrategie. Halverwege 2024 groeide Barter plots veel sneller en werd duidelijk dat het bedrijf volwassen moest worden: klantenservice, processen, schaalbaarheid en nieuwe mensen aannemen. Vandaag werkt Barter met meer dan 15.000 creators, voornamelijk binnengehaald via mond-tot-mondreclame. Salomo ziet twee sterke categorieën aan bedrijfskant: e-commerce en experiences. Vooral dat laatste — musea, shows, restaurants, ervaringen — werkt sterk omdat het natuurlijk aanvoelt in de content. Het moeilijkste deel blijft het uitleggen hoe creatormarketing werkt: veel van zijn klanten hebben nog nooit met creators gewerkt en moeten begrijpen waarom consistentie en vertrouwen cruciaal zijn. Salomo is erg duidelijk over financiële discipline: tussen een leuk idee en een winstgevend bedrijf zit veel zelfbeheersing. Niet zomaar geld uitgeven, duidelijk weten waar je wel en niet in investeert, en een sterke CFO in je team hebben. Barter wil internationaal blijven doorgroeien: vanuit Nederland, België en Duitsland naar Engeland en Frankrijk, met de Verenigde Staten als grote droom. From 2018 to 2022, Nate served as the first CEO of World Central Kitchen (WCK), leading its transformation from a small operation with under $1 million in revenue to a global humanitarian powerhouse raising $500 million annually. Following his time at WCK, Nate served two years as Special Advisor on Ukraine for the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. In recognition of his efforts for the Ukrainian people, Nate was awarded the Order of Merit by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In 2025, Nate became CEO of All Hands & Hearts, the disaster relief nonprofit co-founded by Petra Němcová. He is also a co-founder of Hachiko Foundation, supporting cats and dogs affected by war in frontline Ukrainian communities. Nate serves on the boards of March For Our Lives, a youth-led movement against gun violence, and Save Ukraine, which has rescued over 670 children abducted by Russia. He also advises Razom for Ukraine, on its advocacy efforts. Early in his career, Nate was a technology entrepreneur and later began working in film. He produced the award-winning HBO Documentary Baltimore Rising with The Wire's Sonja Sohn. Nate is an executive producer of the 2022 Emmy-nominated film We Feed People from Ron Howard about WCK's rise. In 2015, he conceived and directed the documentary Undiscovered Haiti with José Andrés, a project co-produced with National Geographic and PBS. Nate has been a longtime collaborator with TED, helping to grow the TEDx program from its start in 2009, leading the TEDxSummit in Doha, and organizing conferences in places like Mogadishu, Baghdad, Tripoli, and Mount Everest. He was named a "Change Hero" by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for his work amplifying voices in underserved communities. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Inspirations: An interview with Ruby Singh Juno-nominated musician Ruby Singh recently returned to Cortes Island, both as a facilitator for the CASE Youth Leadership Conference at Hollyhock and to give a concert at Manson's Hall. In this morning's interview, he talks about his many forms of artistic expression, inspirations, and relationship with Cortes Island. Ruby Singh: "I find inspiration in a lot of different ways. I feel like we are all just small tendrils of creation, so the act of creation and the act of creativity are among the most natural ways of being. Other artists really inspire me. I am deeply inspired by ancestry and futurity at the same time, so finding ourselves where we are in this timeline of inheritance from our ancestors, and what we are thinking about leaving here when we leave. Long timelines really inspire me, and deep time is a very inspirational thing. I get a lot of inspiration from my community, from the people around me, and from this more-than-human world that surrounds us." Cortes Currents: What brought you to Cortes? Ruby Singh: "Years and years and years ago, I think it was Mook and Monique who invited our band to come up and play. It might have been the late '90s, maybe even '98, and we played over at the Gorge. We had a band called Sapna. Who was the fantastic woman who ran that bakery there for a long time? Truda baked us a cake on our first arrival, and then after the gig we were shuffled off over to Channel Rock, spent some time there, and instantly felt the gorgeousness of this place. In the '90s and 2000s, a few of us went to Carrington Bay and camped out there for a while because it was so beautiful." "We're looking back over 25 years now. Every August I'm usually back, because that was when we were doing the youth camps. I love coming here in August and just being here, close to the water and the forest, and having a great summertime on Cortes." Cortes Currents: I was reading the bio the Cortes Island Academy provides for the CASE Youth Leadership Summit. Tell me how your work is at the intersection of social justice, the arts, capacity building, and systemic change. Ruby Singh: "I have worked in social and ecological organizing and education for over 20 years—working within education systems, within detention centers, and within universities and colleges, running workshops. There's really something powerful about being able to express our stories and have them listened to. That moves into an idea of agency and being able to move in the world. My artwork has those things at the basis of creation, but I am also just coming off working with all the young people today."
