Each day we have a choice. We can choose a path of healthy behaviors or choose dysfunctional ones. How do we learn what's good for us and how do we make healthy choices each day? Understand your physiology: Your "Lizard Brain." Read the "Don't Listen to Your Lizard Brain" article in Psyhcology Today. From the article: The reptilian part of your brain controls "primitive drives related to thirst, hunger, sexuality, and territoriality, as well as habits and procedural memory." Be sure to take care of your body (eat, sleep, drink water, rest). Remember your biology. When afraid or angry, hormones are released into your bloodstream. These hormones can stick around for around 45 minutes if you're angry and that's why it's important to understand your physiology. How to be aware of your anger before it gets out of control: Meditation Take a break Deep breathing Center yourself. You need a touchstone that you can trust to help you decide what is healthy and what isn't. Is this true? Is this healthy for me? Strengthen your "adult" voice: "Parent, Child, Adult" voice. In the world of Leadership, there's always been a lot of talk about climbing the corporate ladder, but do you believe there's a way to go from being an ambitious manager to an outstanding leader? I ask because everyone in Leadership will tell you there is a vast difference between managing and leading your people. Today's guest is here to share exactly how to take that leap, Adam Bryant. Adam joined The ExCo Group, a senior leadership development and executive mentoring firm, as managing director in 2017 after a 30-year career in journalism, including 18 years at The New York Times as creator of the iconic Corner Office column in the New York Times. Adam Bryant has interviewed more than 1,000 CEOs and other senior leaders over the last dozen years, and his focus for the conversations has been on the crucial leadership lessons learned rather than asking them about their company strategy. All those insights help contribute to the books he has written and his work in leadership development and executive mentoring for the ExCo Group. Adam has written four books based on the themes that emerged from those interviews, and his latest book is, "The Leap to Leader: How Ambitious Managers Make the Jump to Leadership." “Wait! Whoa! Slow down there! Are you sure you want to try that?” Do you recognize when your Lizard Brain takes over? Your Lizard Brain is that little voice that whispers in your ear telling you that you are not good enough (“oh man, I may actually BE the worst parent EVER”) and reminds you of all the risks waiting around the corner to bury you. It shouts "I wouldn't DO that!" when you attempt to do something challenging...like (ahem) being vulnerable as a parent, apologizing, or just being real with your kids and partner. Is your Lizard Brain helping or obstructing you? Robert and Nicole discuss how they deal with their Lizard Brain and the difference between being brave and being fearless. How do you raise confident children while also keeping them safe? Bonus question: What can you do to help your kids deal with their Lizard Brain trying to hold them back?
