What does it actually mean to forgive? Not the version we were taught like turning the other cheek, being the bigger person, letting it go. But real forgiveness. The kind that doesn't require you to go back, nor erases what happened. In Episode 8 of Real Love Ready, Robin sits down with Shaka Senghor, bestselling author, speaker, and an incredibly powerful voice on personal transformation and healing. Shaka spent 19 years in prison for second-degree murder, seven of them in solitary confinement. In that darkness he looked at himself deeply and honestly and wrote his way through rage, shame, grief, and the long process of forgiving himself. What came out the other side wasn't just survival. It was a profound understanding that forgiveness, at its deepest level, is love in action. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. When life feels overwhelming, therapy can help. In this episode of Leaders in Living Rooms, Sean Morgan sits down with Jim Burgen to explore how senior leaders can cultivate vision, develop future leaders, and steward seasons of growth with intentionality and humility. Jim shares the story behind Flatirons Church's “Be Free” faith initiative, a movement focused on establishing outposts of freedom, investing in leadership development, and engaging deeply in anti-trafficking efforts locally and globally. The conversation highlights the importance of resisting manufactured momentum, listening for God's direction, and building structures that empower others while protecting the leader's spiritual and emotional health. Jim also challenges pastors to create pathways for calling the next generation into ministry and to embrace both the weight and privilege of the mantle of leadership. Welcome to Episode 159 of the Leaders in Living Rooms Podcast with Sean Morgan.

Worry has a way of quietly filling the mind—about the future, finances, work, relationships, and everything in between. In Matthew 6:33–34, Jesus speaks directly into that pressure, not by dismissing our concerns, but by redirecting our focus. Instead of being consumed by tomorrow, He invites us to seek God first today and trust Him with what’s ahead. Freedom from worry isn’t about never feeling anxious thoughts—it’s about learning where to place them. Jesus teaches that life is lived one day at a time, with God as our provider and guide. When we shift our focus from what we can’t control to the One who holds everything together, worry begins to lose its grip. Peace grows when trust becomes our daily response. Highlights Worry is common—but it doesn’t have to control your life Jesus doesn’t shame worry; He redirects our focus Seeking God first reshapes how we handle anxiety about tomorrow Living one day at a time helps reduce mental overwhelm Prayer is a practical way to release anxious thoughts to God Filling your mind with truth helps quiet spiraling thoughts Peace grows when trust in God becomes your default response Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: The Desire to Be Free from WorryBy Vivian Bricker Bible Reading:“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” - Matthew 6:33-34 (NLT) Worry weighs heavily on most of us. Tight deadlines at work, endless tests in college, and difficult financial situations can cause us to worry. To worry is to be human. Although many of us may feel ashamed for worrying, we must remember that it is a part of life. We can trust God and still feel worried about certain circumstances. Worry does not equate to a lack of faith in God. Rather, worry is simply what it is: being afraid or doubtful about what will happen. Worry can completely control our lives if we let it; however, we can also stand up to it. My dad and I are avid walkers, and we often come across many cyclists. What I have noticed about most cyclists is that their biggest concern is speed. Many of them ride with a forward lean, as it helps them become more aerodynamic and enhances their speed. However, there is one cyclist we occasionally see who is different from the others. Rather than being hunched over and focused on speed, he simply rides his bike, plays music from a loudspeaker, and appears to be free from worry: laid back, relaxed, and genuinely happy to be there. As he passed us one day, I told my dad, “I wish I could be that relaxed.” I think most of us feel the same way… to be free from worry and to genuinely enjoy the little things in life. While I’m sure this cyclist has worries at times, he also seems to know when to let them go and focus on what brings him joy. This is something we should aim to do in our own lives. While our worries may not disappear, we can learn to set them apart from other areas of our lives. The first step in easing these worries is to turn to God in prayer and reading the Bible. Intersecting Faith & Life: Jesus tells us, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:33-34, NLT). Rather than endlessly worrying about what is to come, we need to surrender these worries to God (1 Peter 5:7). As the Lord says, we are to focus on the Kingdom of God and live in obedience to Him. This means focusing on the present and faithfully living out God’s teachings found in Scripture. If we choose the path of worry, it will be difficult to stay focused on God. Worry can cause us to spiral further. Yet it can be eased by talking with God. Tell Him why you are worried. Be honest with Him. He will never downplay your concerns or treat them as unimportant. It is also helpful to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8-9). Fixing our minds on these things can help quiet our worries. Instead of dwelling on the concerns of today or tomorrow, reflect on the beauty around you—the trees, a joyful call from a friend, or a warm hug from a loved one. Pray to God whenever worry rises in your heart. Let’s go to Him together: Dear God, I want to be free from worry. You know how worry creeps into my mind every day. At times, it feels like it could drown me. Help me to rise above the worry and to reflect upon Your Son’s words. Guide my heart after Your Kingdom and to live for You. Remove my anxious, worried heart and replace it with a steadfast, unwavering heart. Thank You for listening to my prayers, God. In Your Son’s Name, I pray, Amen. What are your most common worries? How can you apply Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:33-34 to your life? Whenever someone asks me for a word that describes how I want to live, my answer is always the same.Freedom.Not just personal freedom, but freedom in my mind, my body, and my spirit. Maybe that comes from being raised Catholic, or maybe it's simply my wild spirit that has never wanted to be contained. So when I read Shaka Senghor's How to Be Free: A Proven Guide to Escaping Life's Hidden Prisons, I knew I needed to have him back on the podcast.Because this message isn't just for people who have been behind bars. You don't need a prison cell to feel imprisoned. It's for anyone lying awake replaying something they wish they could let go of. Anyone who can't move past a loss. Anyone whose carefully built walls are keeping even joy out.Shaka Senghor is known for his remarkable journey from solitary confinement to the C-suite. He is a New York Times bestselling author, a resilience teacher, and one of the most powerful voices we have on transformation, healing, and justice. In his latest book, he names the hidden prisons that keep us stuck. They are not made of concrete and steel, but of grief, anger, shame, and fear. And here is the truth that changes everything. These prisons have doors. In This Episode, We ExploreGriefShaka begins his book with grief for a reason. We talk about loss in a deeply human way, including the death of his beloved dog and his brother. In one of the most moving moments of our conversation, he shares how he refused to let his dog's passing go unacknowledged, even taking legal action against the care center responsible. This is grief met with both love and accountability.AngerWhat does it mean to be the master of your emotions rather than a prisoner of them? He reframes anger as something that, when understood, can become a source of power and agency rather than destruction.ShameIn one of the most courageous moments of the conversation, Shaka speaks openly about sexual abuse as a man and the silence that surrounds it. At a time when so many men carry this in isolation, his willingness to name it matters deeply.Hope and JoyThere is light here, too. This conversation is not just about surviving. It is about learning how to live. He reminds us that joy is not something we earn after suffering. It is available to us now.Shaka spent nineteen years in the Michigan prison system, including seven years in solitary confinement. Since his release, he has become a leading voice on resilience, healing, and personal transformation. His work has been featured on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday, and How to Be Free is a roadmap for anyone who has ever felt stuck.Which, if we're honest, is all of us.Hidden prisons are real. They are built from our pain, our past, and the stories we carry about who we are.But as he reminds us through both his life and his work, the door is always there. You just have to be willing to walk through it.

In this episode, Sathiya explains why trying to quit porn alone isn't just ineffective — it's unbiblical and counterproductive. If effort alone worked, you'd already be free. He unpacks how isolation fuels secrecy, rumination, and internal pressure, making self-control harder rather than easier. Scripture consistently shows that transformation happens in community, not in solitude. True freedom requires structure, visibility, rhythm, and brotherhood. Community doesn't replace discipline — it sustains growth long enough for real change to compound.

March 9, 2026 Hello and Happy Day! This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, Novelist and Life Coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, March 9, 2026, and this is episode #6 in Series 2026. This episode is titled, “How to Be Free of Anxiety.” Before we get into our message, let me share a resource that will give you practical tools for getting free of anxiety once and for all. It’s my life-changing book titled Breaking the Mind Barrier, and it is Book 2 in my series titled The Winner’s Library. Breaking the Mind Barrier is available in both print and ebook formats at the links below or in the show notes. BREAKING THE MIND BARRIER (Print)BREAKING THE MIND BARRIER (eBook) And now let’s dive right into this week’s message: How to Be Free of Anxiety. Anxiety has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and, I would dare say, pandemic proportions throughout the world. People everywhere are complaining of feeling constant anxiety about their finances, their health, their families, their jobs, and their safety in this increasingly dangerous world. Many admit a strong undercurrent of anxiety continually present in their lives but don’t know what to do about it. If this describes you, then you are in the right place at the right time. Let’s take a look at anxiety: what it is, how it enters our lives, and what to do to get rid of it. WHAT IS ANXIETY? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, anxiety is defined as “apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated misfortune.” Medically, Webster defines anxiety as “an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physical signs (such as tension, sweating, and increased pulse rate), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one’s capacity to cope with it.” Sadly, many people today fit these descriptions. Perhaps you are one of them. If so, pay close attention because, by the power of God, you can be free of anxiety once and for all. HOW ANXIETY ENTERS OUR LIVES How do we become anxious? Anxiety has its ultimate roots in the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. When sin entered the world, anxiety and fear entered with it. As descendants of Adam and Eve, we are born inheriting their sin nature. Just as parents give to their children their physical genetic makeup, so did Adam and Eve give the entire human race their spiritual genetic makeup. Hence, as Scripture says in Romans 3: 23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And all of us, therefore, experience the effects of sin. In an individual’s life, anxiety enters through fearful experiences, like childhood trauma, death of a loved one, especially a parent, sexual abuse, and verbal abuse. Anxiety enters from stressful family situations over an extended period of time. Anxiety can be triggered by adverse health conditions, adverse financial issues, or adverse relationship challenges. Regardless of the cause, anxiety wreaks havoc in a person’s life. If not confronted, it can lead to serious forms of physical illness—like digestive and cardiac disorders—and mental illness—like agoraphobia, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, and other phobias. Anxiety is closely linked to fear. In fact, they have the same root. According to the Bible, that root is a demonic spirit called “the spirit of fear.” In 2 Timothy 1: 7, the Bible tells us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Fear does not come from God. It comes from Satan. And fear is always based on a lie because Satan is the “father of lies” (John 8: 44). Later, we will take a look at some of the lies that cause anxiety in our lives. But now, I want to explore the natural fear response in humans in the face of danger. God created man with a natural response to danger. This is normal and alerts us to protect ourselves when necessary. It is called the brain’s natural fear response. For example, we don’t cross the street when the a car is fast approaching. We wait until it passes or until the light turns green. Why? Because we have a built-in knowing that being hit by a car could kill us or seriously injure us. This is a healthful type of fear and is prompted by wisdom. But when the brain’s normal response becomes overly active, anxiety sets in. Anxiety has been called “an over-activity of the brain’s fear response.” LIES THAT CAUSE ANXIETY Anxiety is based on a lie. Discovering what those lies are in your own life is key to overcoming anxiety. Lies feed anxiety, especially lies relating to danger. For example, lies that deceive the brain into perceiving danger cause anxiety. Lies such as “bad things are going to happen to you,” or “you can’t handle this.” Believing these lies creates tremendous stress. Notice I said, BELIEVING the lies creates stress. It is not the lie that causes the stress. It is believing the lie that causes stress. Likewise, lies relating to your significance and worth can create anxiety. When we doubt that we are loved, we doubt that we are cared for and protected. When we doubt that we are cared for and protected, we grow anxious. Deep down, all of us not only want but need to know that someone loves us and cares about what happens to us. Knowing the negative effects of lies on our well-being emphasizes how important it is for us to believe the truth in order to be free of anxiety. What are some lies that cause anxiety? Here are a few: 1__There is no God. 2__God doesn’t care about me. 3__No one loves me. 4__I’m not good enough. 5__I’ll never amount to anything. 6__Something terrible is going to happen to me. 7__I am alone in the world. 8__I’m the only one who feels this way. 9__I can handle things myself. 10__Unless I do it perfectly, I won’t succeed. 11__Conflict is dangerous. 12__If I’m not anxious, I’m not being responsible. HOW TO GET RID OF ANXIETY So, how do we get rid of anxiety? While the world offers many ways to be free of anxiety—all of which give only temporary relief—I am going to share with you Biblical principles for getting rid of anxiety—principles that I have applied effectively in my own life to get rid of anxiety. I grew up in a fear-filled environment. Anxiety was the air I breathed and what I thought was normal. Yet, my entire perspective on anxiety changed when I had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. In John 14: 6, Jesus defines Himself as the Truth. In John 8: 32, the Bible says that the truth sets us free. Through Jesus, I learned the truth, and the truth set me free from anxiety. What is the truth? The truth is what God says it is in the Bible. Nothing more. Nothing less. Here are Bible verses that expose and refute the lies that I mentioned earlier in this podcast. I will repeat the lie first and then replace it with the truth: THE LIE: God doesn’t care about me.THE TRUTH: John 3: 16 – God says He loves you and cares about you, so much so that He paid the price for your sin so that you could spend forever with Him. THE LIE: I’ll never amount to anything.THE TRUTH: Jeremiah 29: 11 – God says that his plans for you are for good and not for evil, to give you a future filled with hope. THE LIE: I’m not good enough.THE TRUTH: Romans 5: 17 – God says that Jesus has made you good enough through His death and resurrection, good enough to qualify you to go to Heaven. And it is by His Blood alone and His grace alone that we become good enough. THE LIE: I’m alone in the world.THE TRUTH: Hebrews 13: 5 – There God says that you will never be alone because He will never leave you nor forsake you. THE LIE: I’m the only one who feels this way.THE TRUTH: 1 Corinthians 10: 13 – The Bible says that other people go through situations similar to yours. You are not the only one going through what you’re going through. THE LIE: I can handle things myself.THE TRUTH: John 15: 5 – God says that without Him you can do nothing. Have you noticed the pattern here for getting free of anxiety? It is a three-step pattern: Step 1) Identify the lie.Step 2) Renounce the lie.Step 3) Replace the lie with the truth. But in order to replace the lie with the truth, you must know the truth. Jesus Christ is the Truth. He said so in John 14: 6 when He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” My friend, anxiety does not have to be a part of your life if you have Jesus Christ in your life. If you have Truth in your life. God has freed you from anxiety and fear. He did so when He died on the Cross and rose from the dead for you. But freedom from anxiety and fear is a gift available only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If you don’t have that personal relationship, you will never experience true freedom from anxiety. But if you do establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you can be free of every evil thing. All it takes is faith in Him. If you have been separated from Jesus Christ but want to start a relationship with Him now, let me introduce you to Him. Pray this simple prayer with me: Lord Jesus, I want to establish a relationship with You. I want to get to know you so that I can experience the freedom from anxiety and from every evil thing that You died and rose from the dead to give me. I receive You now as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for saving me. Thank you for taking the punishment for my sin. Make me like You. In Your Name I pray. Amen. If you sincerely prayed this prayer from your heart, you are now a born-again child of God. Welcome to the Family of God! The weight loss drug market is undergoing a dramatic transformation this week as Novo Nordisk announced major price cuts for its popular medications Ozempic and Wegovy. Starting January 2027, the Danish pharmaceutical company will reduce prices by up to 50 percent for Wegovy and 35 percent for Ozempic, with both medications selling for 675 dollars per month. This announcement reflects intensifying competition in the GLP-1 drug market, where Eli Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound have been aggressively capturing market share since their approval in 2022.The pricing pressure comes as Novo Nordisk faces multiple challenges despite the massive growth of the weight loss drug industry. Global sales of GLP-1 medications reached between 50 and 60 billion euros last year, with projections suggesting the market could hit 100 billion euros annually by the early 2030s. However, Novo Nordisk's share price has plummeted more than 60 percent in the past year, largely because the company can no longer charge premium prices in the United States, its most lucrative market. Additionally, the company's newly developed drug called CagriSema underperformed in clinical trials, achieving only 23 percent weight loss compared to Mounjaro's 25.5 percent.Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey continues to be a prominent advocate for GLP-1 medications, discussing her personal experience with these drugs in various media appearances. According to her recent statements, Oprah began taking a GLP-1 medication in 2023 and lost approximately 50 pounds. When she stopped taking the medication after six months to test whether she could maintain the weight loss independently, she quickly regained 20 pounds and experienced a return of what she calls food noise, the constant mental preoccupation with eating. Oprah has emphasized that taking these medications appears to be a lifetime commitment, comparing it to managing other chronic conditions like high blood pressure. She has also noted an unexpected benefit, stating that the medication eliminated her desire for alcohol after years of heavy consumption. In her new book titled Enough, Your Health Your Weight and What It's Like to Be Free, Oprah explores her relationship with weight loss medications and discusses how obesity is now understood as a clinical disease rather than a personal failure. The price reductions announced this week signal that the intense competition in the GLP-1 market will continue to reshape the pharmaceutical landscape. As more variants and generic versions enter the market in coming years, prices are expected to decline further, potentially making these medications accessible to millions more people globally. Thanks for listening, please subscribe, and remember—this episode was brought to you by Quiet Please podcast networks. Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussions of sex trafficking, sexual exploitation, and abuse. Sex trafficking does not only happen “somewhere else.” It thrives in silence, misunderstanding, and systems that fail to protect vulnerable youth. In this re-released episode of Care More Be Better, Corinna Bellizzi speaks with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Melody C. Miller about her documentary California's Forgotten Children and the real-world impact it has had in schools, communities, and institutions across the United States. Melody began this work as a teenager, believing trafficking was a distant issue, only to discover that students from her own high school were being exploited. That realization led her to volunteer with survivor-led organizations, undergo trauma-informed training, and ultimately spend five years creating a film that centers survivor voices and equips communities with tools for prevention and response. This conversation is also deeply personal. Corinna shares her own experience of running away at thirteen and the vulnerability that follows when young people are left without safety, support, or options. Together, she and Melody unpack what sex trafficking actually looks like, how grooming and coercion operate, and why language, awareness, and informed action matter. Rather than focusing on perpetrators or sensational stories, this episode centers: Survivor-led insight Community-based prevention Trauma-informed response Practical guidance for recognizing and reporting exploitation Listeners will come away with a clearer understanding of how trafficking hides in plain sight—and how ordinary people can help interrupt it without putting themselves or others at risk. What We Cover in This Episode How Melody discovered trafficking within her own community Why sex trafficking is often misunderstood and misidentified The importance of survivor-centered language and reporting How schools and communities can safely intervene Real outcomes from film screenings, including victims coming forward Trauma-informed approaches in policing and education What each of us can do to help protect vulnerable youth If this episode feels heavy, you're not alone. — The deep emotional pain you carry seeps into every part of life - waves of intense sadness, anxiety, or sudden anger that leave you drained. Thoughts spin endlessly, relationships grow tense, and exhaustion becomes constant. At times, you no longer recognize yourself, as though something unseen is shaping your feelings. It feels like you're losing control of your own life, and no one truly understands the depth of your suffering. For others, the pain is in watching a loved one change before their eyes. A partner, child, or parent becomes withdrawn, irritable, or almost unrecognizable, and nothing explains the sudden shift. When distress lingers without reason and nothing seems to help, the true cause may be something rarely discussed: spirit attachment—also known as spirit possession. This subtle influence can affect anyone, quietly disrupting emotional balance, physical well-being, and inner peace. Since 1968, the Dr. Wanda Pratnicka Center has quietly helped over 10,000 people worldwide find freedom from these unexplained symptoms. With formal education and five decades of experience, we understand what you're going through—and we know how to help. Our findings are documented in five books, including Possessed by Ghosts, translated into nine languages. But what matters most is this: this suffering is real, and healing is possible. Valeria interviews Mike Pratnicka— He is the co-founder of The Dr. Wanda Pratnicka Center. Mike gained a tremendous amount of spiritual insight about spirit attachment removal under Wanda's mentorship. Today, he performs the removals using Wanda's method. Thanks to Michael's ability to speak English and German, he handles all media inquiries, lectures and events in English & German languages. Wanda Pratnicka, PhD. - internationally recognized leader in esoteric science and a leading voice in spirit attachment phenomenon. She dealt with tens of thousands of people around the world who have suffered from emotional/mental disturbances and physical illnesses that were considered to be incurable. Wanda's unique ability is that she is able to diagnose and remove spirit entities, aka ghosts, from people remotely; no matter where a person is located. Wanda is also the author of the book series In the Wheel of Life Volumes 1-3. Her most recent book is Know the Truth and Be Free. What if your faith could spark something bigger than you? In this final episode of the Be Free podcast, the Flatirons leadership team opens up about what really happened behind the scenes. From wrinkled tablecloths to holy moments in the balcony, this is a story about grit, obedience, and stepping into something way bigger than ourselves. It's not about hype. It's about people choosing faith, even when the math doesn't add up. God showed up. And so did our church. This isn't the end. It's the spark that sets the next chapter in motion. Over a year of planning, prayer, and sacrifice led to this. What started as a vision became a unified movement. Jim led through physical pain. Staff carried more weight than ever. Volunteers owned their part. People gave with open hands and open hearts. This is the kind of church Jesus builds. And we're just getting started.Digital Commitment Card: https://www.befreecolorado.com/join
What happens when a church decides to go to war against evil, no matter the cost?In this no-holds-barred conversation, Pastor Jim Burgen, Amanda Brown, and Jesse DeYoung talk openly about Flatirons Church's fight against human trafficking. From international partnerships to dark realities here in Denver, they expose the spiritual, emotional, and cultural weight of this battle. Amanda shares how this work has impacted her deeply, and the team calls the church to rise up, get uncomfortable, and take action. This isn't for show. This is about saving lives and pushing back real darkness. This is what happens when the church gets off the sidelines and into the fight. The Be Free initiative is more than a campaign. It's a spiritual assault on the systems that enslave kids and destroy families. Flatirons is bringing together law enforcement, nonprofits, local leaders, and prayer warriors to rescue and restore the broken. Thousands are stepping up to give, serve, and fight because Jesus calls us to do more than watch. He calls us to go. And now is the time.
What if your faith was the only thing standing between a child and a life of pain? This message isn't just a sermon, it's a call to move. Week 5 of Be Free is about stepping into the real fight happening all around us. Jim Burgen lays it out clearly: our kids, our families, our faith, they're all being targeted, and the church can't afford to sit back. Jesus didn't just save us from something, He saved us for something. And that something is freedom, for us and for the people still trapped. This is where belief gets put into action. Through Rescue to Restore, Flatirons is stepping into the fight against injustice, against the systems and situations hurting the most vulnerable. This is spiritual warfare, boots on the ground, armed with the truth, grace, and love of Jesus. It's not political. It's not about taking sides. It's about living our faith in the real world and saying, “we're here to help.” This is your moment. Let's go.
What if the voice of God is clearer than you think—but you've just stopped listening? This episode of Be Free hits deep. Jim Burgen shares a story straight from Man Camp where 4,000 men gathered under one massive tent—and God showed up. A near-death moment, a wake-up call, and a clear challenge: listen to the Spirit and obey. Plus, hear how Ross went from engineering in Austin to pastoring in Loveland because he said “yes” to a nudge from God. Real faith isn't clean or easy—but it's worth everything.Transformation happens when obedience meets risk.Ross's story proves God still calls people from ordinary paths to extraordinary impact. From the moment someone asked, “Have you thought about ministry?”—to him now leading Flatirons Loveland—this is a story of saying “yes” when everything in you screams “no.” It's about trusting God with your future, your finances, your fears. And watching Him show up.Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/@Flatirons
Are we really free, or just too comfortable to notice we're not? What if the life you think is “free” is actually just comfortable and unchallenged? In this episode of the Be Free podcast, Jesse, Karl, and Paul unpack what real spiritual freedom looks like, and how often we confuse it with ease. Through stories about a runaway gecko, quiet moments of boredom, and the example of Harriet Tubman, the conversation gets real about purpose, responsibility, and why so many of us feel stuck, even when life looks good from the outside.Jesse explains how stepping outside of God's design can feel like freedom at first… but over time, it leaves us empty. The guys reflect on how boredom, disconnection, and comfort slowly shape our faith and how compassion, purpose, and a clear calling can bring it back to life. Whether you're leading a family, working a job that feels ordinary, or wondering how politics and faith fit together, this is for you.
Why do we keep going back to the same chains Jesus already broke? This message is a gut check for anyone who's ever tasted freedom in Christ but still finds themselves living like they're not. Jim unpacks Galatians 5:1 and challenges us to stop rebuilding the same prison Jesus tore down. Be Free isn't just a slogan, it's a mission, a strategy, and a spiritual war cry for anyone who's done being a slave to lies, sin, and fear. It's time to drop the chains, plant your feet, and live like you've actually been set free.Jesus didn't die just to forgive you; He died to free you. And free people don't go back. This is our moment to get honest about the chains we keep picking back up and finally put them down. This isn't about being perfect, it's about standing firm in truth and grace, knowing we're just former slaves showing others where to find freedom. Before revival happens out there, it has to happen in us.
What if you stopped waiting for the right moment—and just got real with God right now? This episode of Be Free is as raw as it gets. Jim Burgen, Jesse DeYoung, and Karen Berge talk about the weight people carry, even church staff, and how retreating into “thin spaces” with God opens up places we didn't want to go… but needed to. It's honest talk on leadership, brokenness, parenting adult kids, false grace, and the lies culture tells us about freedom. This isn't about being saved, it's about living free. And it starts with choosing truth over comfort. From carrying secret pain to stepping into calling, this is what freedom looks like in real life. Jim unpacks what happened at the Flatirons staff retreat, tears, confession, silence, healing, and how that led to a bigger realization: freedom isn't one-and-done. It's truth, then grace, over and over. Forgiveness doesn't always feel good, but it's the way forward. The Be Free journey isn't about behavior, it's about your heart. And this conversation might be the push you didn't know you needed.
What if the thing you thought was holding you together is actually keeping you stuck? For two years, the Flatirons team prayed, wrestled, and dreamed about one thing—freedom. Not the feel-good kind. The real kind that changes families, saves lives, and tears chains off people stuck in shame, fear, and hidden brokenness. In this raw, unfiltered first episode of Be Free, Jim Burgen and the team talk about what led to launching this movement, the battles behind the scenes, and the burden to build outposts of hope for a world gasping for something real.Be Free isn't a church campaign. It's a war cry. It's about setting spiritual ground in a culture drowning in noise, and giving men and women a place to heal, rise, and fight back. Whether you're battling isolation, addiction, anger, or regret, this episode reminds us that Jesus doesn't just offer heaven later—He offers freedom now. And when a church moves in unity with that mission, freedom follows.
What if your story of freedom was meant to set someone else free?Week one of Be Free isn't just a new series; it's a call to arms. Jim Burgen kicks off a six-week journey that's really the start of a movement: a church stepping out of comfort, out of safety, and into the front lines of spiritual battle. This message is a fire-starter, reminding us that our freedom in Christ isn't a finish line. It's a launchpad. It's about turning pain into purpose, and choosing to fight for those still enslaved by guilt, shame, addiction, fear, or abuse. This isn't a metaphor, it's a mission. From Jim's personal story of rescue to the biblical call from Galatians 5, this is an unapologetic, boots-on-the-ground invitation to stop playing defense and go to war for the hearts and futures of others. Be Free is about building spiritual outposts for the broken, the addicted, the trafficked, and the hopeless. We don't hide in a fortress; we carry freedom into enemy territory.

From Cowards to Courageous Leaders, the story of the early church in Acts shows how ordinary people found courage, boldness, and true freedom in Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. This message wraps up the 35-Day Challenge and sets the tone for Be Free, Flatirons' next bold step of faith. Jim gets real about leadership, unity, and what's coming next for the church. Drawing from Acts, he shows how the early church exploded with courage and power—not because they were perfect, but because they were filled. Filled with the Spirit. Filled with boldness. Filled with a mission. The same Spirit that transformed Peter and Paul is calling us, right now, to something bigger. If you've ever felt disqualified, disillusioned, or afraid, this is for you. This isn't just a history lesson; it's a calling. Jesus didn't build His church with polished professionals; He used screw-ups, cowards, and skeptics who got filled and went first. And that's the plan for Flatirons moving forward. It's time to decide: Are you in? Fully in? Because the next move of God might come through your story, your scars, and your obedience.

He's transformed his life through not making excuses and taking full ownership of his decisions. Now, he's a New York Times best-selling author who has been called a “soul igniter” by Oprah. His latest book is called How to Be Free. Notes: The Permanence of Split-Second Decisions – At 17, shot three times on a Detroit corner. At 19, he killed a man in a conflict after creating a narrative that he would "shoot first." Sentenced to 17-40 years for second-degree murder. "I try to teach young people about understanding the permanence of a 30-second decision." Books as Portals to Freedom – Read over 1,500 books during 19-year incarceration, starting with street literature (Pimp, Black Gangster) as a gateway to philosophy (Plato, Marcus Aurelius). "Books allowed me to escape in the most literal sense... a portal into other worlds." Prison Mentors Changed Everything – Lifers became his guides: "These are men serving life sentences who came equipped with wisdom about what's on the other side... they guided me to books that shattered old narratives and opened possibilities." Reading Creates Writing Excellence – Speed-reading skill from age 8 (learned during punishments with encyclopedias) combined with voracious prison reading, led to becoming a NY Times bestselling author. "You have to be a practitioner of the craft every day." Journaling as Transformation Tool – "It was the most healing experience I've ever had to speak to my truth, speak to the pain points." Uses 20 different journals, writes everywhere - planes, shower thoughts on phone, margins of books. Hidden Prisons We All Carry – "The most powerful prisons aren't the ones made of concrete and steel. They're the ones we carry with us, built from grief, anger, shame, trauma." Everyone has internal prisons that can be opened. Vulnerability as Strength, Not Manipulation – Authentic vulnerability vs. weaponized oversharing. "Human beings have this innate ability to suss out the truth. Authenticity and vulnerability is the super unlock... being true to your center." Community Through Shared Truth – Prison taught extreme friendship criteria: "Are they willing to serve a life sentence for you or die for you?" Now applies accountability standards: showing up consistently, being loyal to family first. Violence Born from Fear – "Reactionary violence is typically born out of fear, being afraid." Prison taught him to see "the child in people" who are acting out, leading to empathy instead of escalation. Voluntary Hardship Builds Resilience – Monthly 3-day fasts in solitary confinement prepared him for food deprivation punishment. "None of us get through life without suffering... that extra hour a week can change your life's outcomes." Composure Through Self-Awareness – Developed through journaling about times he wasn't composed. "Once you've written it down, you own it. When you own it, you can control it. When you can control it, it's easy to become composed." Remove All Excuses – Florence Nightingale quote: "I never gave or took any excuse." Despite a felony record, a violent crime conviction, and 20 years in prison, he chose to "lead a great life" by removing every excuse. Shows authentic relationships transcend backgrounds. Quotes: "I try to teach young people about understanding the permanence of a 30-second decision." "I was in prison before I stepped foot in a cell, and I was free before they ever let me out." "The most powerful prisons aren't the ones made of concrete and steel.
