Valves are sticking all over as the hosts give advice on how to avoid pulling cylinders. Send your questions to podcasts@aopa.org for a chance to be on the show. Join the world's largest aviation community at aopa.org/join Full notes below: Rick has a 182 with a new Pponk engine and he's burning lots of exhaust valves. He's wondering what he should change operationally. Paul said to borescope more frequently to find the asymmetric burn patterns before they need to be replaced, and if they start to have asymmetric patterns to lap them immediately. He recommends borescoping every 100 hours. Mike gives some initial results of Savvy Aviation's borescope initiative, which after 100,000 images found that 7 or 8 percent of valves showed signs of heat distress. Twenty five percent of the engines had at least one valve that was heat distressed. About 85 percent of those valves were in the early stage of distress and could be lapped. Only about 15 percent were considered late stage. Brad has an SR22 with an IO-550 that had high oil usage. They pulled a cylinder, rehoned it and put on new rings. Later he started asking questions about torquing the through bolts, and the shop told him they held a wrench on the other side, but didn't torque both sides. He's wondering if he should go back and retorque the bolts. Mike and Paul think he's probably ok. Bruce is sick of sniffing gas fumes. They installed new fuel senders and a digital fuel gauge in their 172. They followed the procedure to calibrate the fuel senders, but he's having trouble getting it correct. He's as much as two gallons off from what it should be. Paul starts by asking what bucket Bruce is using because the utility buckets from the home stores are unreliable as calibrated containers, he said. The other issue is the wet wing construction, which can lead to dams that make it difficult to fully defuel or refuel. Bruce has even accounted for temperature. He's within half a gallon on one side, which Paul said is usually as close as you can get it. Ed is stirring the pot. He read that in an article in the American Bonanza Society publication that operating lean of peak is bad for engines. Obviously the hosts disagree, and a discussion of the merits of rich of peak and lean of peak ensues.
Max discusses the crash of N831AZ, a Cirrus SR22 at Provo, Utah. The aircraft was following a slower light sport aircraft in the traffic pattern for runway 13. The Cirrus pilot was instructed to go around after getting too close to the preceding aircraft. During both traffic patterns, the pilot struggled with airspeed management, flying with a constantly decreasing airspeed instead of maintaining a stable approach. On the second attempt, the aircraft stalled during the base-to-final turn and crashed into Utah Lake, possibly entering a spin before impact. He emphasizes the importance of stabilized approaches, maintaining consistent airspeeds, and using proper trim when adding flaps to prevent the nose from rising. He also highlights issues with situational awareness, including managing separation in traffic patterns and avoiding distractions like non-essential conversations in the cockpit. He believes that older Cirrus models have higher accident rates, possibly due to a lack of training rather than the aircraft itself. The crash serves as a reminder of the critical role that airspeed plays in safe flying, especially during the traffic pattern and final approach. Max talks about the accident of N51FM, a Cirrus SR22T at Paso Robles, CA, and emphasizes the importance of understanding approach procedures, particularly when starting an approach from an IF/IAF fix with a racetrack. The accident involved a pilot who failed to follow correct procedures, leading to a crash, though fortunately, all occupants survived. Max breaks down the mistakes made by the pilot and discusses the implications for instrument pilots. Welcome to your weekly General Aviation news update, and this week we have 3 stories for you; 737 Max 9 loses plug door in flight, NASA to release X59 this week, and the new Cirrus G7 Series. 00:00 Introduction 00:15 Boeing 737 Loses Door 02:06 NASA Releasing X59 03:06 New Cirrus G7 Series First up this week is an Alaskan Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9, which lost a plug door while climbing out of Portland, OR. The door was blown off in an explosive decompression that left a hole in the airplane and even reportedly tore the shirt off of a teenager sitting nearby. The decompression occurred at nearly 16,000 feet. No one was occupying the seat directly next to where the decompression occurred and thankfully injuries were limited to scratches. The aircraft landed without incident back in Portland where an investigation was promptly initiated. So far, the FAA has issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive to carriers operating the 737 Max 9 requiring inspection of the door plugs. These plugs exist because some carriers use more seats in the aircraft and thus require additional emergency exits. On United and Alaska Airlines planes, the number of seats is reduced, so the doors are fitted with a permanent plug. It's unclear how this plug failed and became loose enough to be blown off, but loose screws and bolts were found on other 737 Max 9s in United's fleet after the Airworthiness Directive. And this folks, is why you wear your seatbelt… Maybe Trevor Jacobs was onto something?? Next up this week is NASA, who has announced that they will unveil the X59 supersonic demonstrator. NASA, in partnership with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, has been developing the X59 since 2018 when Skunk Works was selected to design, build and fly the demonstrator. The primary goal of the X59 is to prove that quiet supersonic flight can be achieved. The X59 will cruise at 55,000 feet, mach 1.4, and will be about 75dB. The aircraft will fly over selected US cities later this year as part of NASA's research to hopefully bring back supersonic air travel! We'll keep you updated with what we see out of the X59! Third up is the new Cirrus SR Series G7! The G7 is an update to the SR20, SR22, and SR22T with updates including 12-inch and 14-inch touchscreen displays, similar to those in the Vision Jet. Engine start is now a push-button start, again mimicking the Vision Jet. Cirrus has also added improved flight controls, incorporating a stick shaker on both left and right controls, an automatic fuel selector that switches tanks every 5 gallons, and flap protection to protect the pilot from accidentally deploying or retracting flaps. Interior additions include the 12 or 14-inch Garmin displays, dimmable task lights, accent lighting, two center console compartments, powered headset jacks, and USB-C chargers. Pretty cool updates from Cirrus affecting the new 2024 model SR aircraft! Alright, that's it! Happy new year and we'll see you next week! https://www.flyingmag.com/the-big-reveal-cirrus-shows-off-the-sr-g7/ https://www.nasa.gov/mission/quesst/ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alaska-airlines-flight-door-plug-jack-teenager-shirt-passenger-kelly-bartlett/
This episode explores the advancements in the Cirrus SR22 G7 aircraft, emphasizing avionics and general enhancements over its predecessor, the G6. To learn the features of the new Cirrus G7, you'll want to purchase a copy of my Max Trescott's G3000 and G5000 Glass Cockpit Handbook, which covers virtually all of the features you'll find in the Perspective Touch+,used in the G7 and the SF50 Vision Jet. Key features include automatic fuel tank alternation, borrowed from the Vision Jet, enhancing fuel management. The addition of a stick shaker provides tactile stall warnings, potentially improving safety. Avionics modifications, include a redesigned flap switch with safety features like flaps under speed and over speed protection. The G7 includes a lighter lithium-ion starter battery and a push-button starter switch, inspired by the Vision Jet, streamlining the startup process. A new storage cubby below the autopilot and relocated user-friendly environmental controls enhance the overall experience. Improved accent lighting, color options, and exterior designs aim to elevate aesthetics and comfort. In avionics, the G7 features two large 14-inch displays with increased resolution and two touchscreen controllers with icons similar to those in Garmin GTN navigators. The Perspective Touch+ software aligns with Cirrus's strategy for a seamless transition from the SR22 to a Vision Jet. Other upgrades include 3D safe taxi, taxiway routing, and a Checklist Scroll Wheel for efficient checklist navigation. The redesign of the CAPS parachute handle placard and streamlined cockpit elements contribute to accessibility and user-friendliness. Overall, the Cirrus SR20 and SR22 G7 introduces a comprehensive set of enhancements for improved safety, user experience, and aesthetics. Brad Rourke, President and CEO of Scottie Resources (TSX.V:SCOT – OTCQB:SCTSF), joins us to recap the next batch of high-grade gold drillhole assays that have been released yesterday from the D Zone Vein, which is in between the Scottie Gold Mine area and the Blueberry Contact Zone. These assays coming in are from last year's 20,000 meter drill program across their projects in the Golden Triangle of British Columbia, with more results still to release from the Scottie Gold Mine area and Blueberry Contact Zone in the near future. Highlights: Drillhole SR23-286 intersected a high-grade D Zone vein, grading 36.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold over 5.0 metres (m) including 91.5 g/t gold over 1.07 m Intercept is located approximately 85 m from existing underground workings Intercept is located 220 m east of the Blueberry Contact Zone Drillhole SR23-289 intersected a high-grade D Zone vein running 20.1 g/t gold over 1.00 m Represents >50 metre step-out from the 2022 discovery intercepts of SR22-188 (31.8 g/t gold over 4.00 m) and SR22-182 (6.82 g/t gold over 6.85 m) Mineralization remains open at depth Drillhole SR23-304 intersected a newly identified high-grade D Zone vein running 5.90 g/t gold over 3.00 m (Table 1, Figures 1, 2, 3) New follow-up target for 2024 We have Brad break down the significance of the D Zone and the nearby C Zone, recapping the historic work done here, the low cost for making discoveries, and the intended follow up drilling at this area for this year's drill program. We wrap having Brad unpack the potential paths forward for 2024's exploration program, with the potential of doing some drilling to produce a resource if that is what the market wants, or focusing instead on more expansion and discovery drilling to keep growing the mineralization and showing further size and scale. If you have any follow up questions for Brad regarding Scottie Resources, then please email us at Fleck@kereport.com or Shad@kereport.com. In full disclosure, Shad is a shareholder of Scottie Resources at the time of this recording Click here to visit the Scottie Resources website and read over all the news.

Summary 284 The final NTSB report is out for Transair flight 810, which crashed at night in the ocean shortly after takeoff from Hawaii. The pilots thought that they had a rare double engine failure. In fact, they had just a single engine failure, but they left both throttles at idle, dooming the plane. The probable cause said “contributing to the accident were the flight crew's ineffective crew resource management, high workload, and stress.” Max talks about the huge distraction that consumed both pilots for a half hour, just moments before they took off. Summary 281 Max talks with Catherine Cavagnaro about the Myth of the 70-50 takeoff rule and what's wrong with it. It seems that 70-50 rule is extracted from a basic but unrealistic model for aircraft takeoffs that ignores air resistance. The same model predicts her Bonanza will go supersonic shortly after takeoff. Even if the rule were valid, a pilot wouldn't rotate until the last inch of the runway. Summary 269 Max talks with Seth Lake about how to use and how not to use ForeFlight for a successful checkride. Even if you aren't planning to take a checkride, you'll learn lots of tips from Seth about how to use the Documents tab of ForeFlight to organize information that you may want to have at your fingertips when you fly. He recommends you create a Binder for your checkride and then add documents to that binder. For example, for an instrument checkride, you may want to include some of the FAA Handbooks, including the Instrument Procedures Handbook and the Instrument Flying Handbook. Other things you might want to include are: Part 61, Part 91, Part 135, ACS Instrument Rating Airplane, Aeronautical Information Manual, Digital Terminal Procedures Supplemental and FAA International Flight Plan. He also mentions a glitch with the Bookmarks function, which is keyed to a particular page in a document, rather than a particular topic. This can become an issue as documents get updated with new pages, and the topics shift to different pages. Summary 268 Max talks with Tom Turner about how to troubleshoot a partial or total engine failure in flight. Every engine is going to be a little different, but there are generic steps for troubleshooting any partial or complete engine failure. All piston engines need fuel, air, and a source of ignition, so you need to check each of these items. For fuel, switch tanks, turn on any auxiliary fuel pumps, and adjust the mixture. If you have carb heat and a manual alternate air system, try applying these. For ignition, try different positions on the mag switch to see if that helps. The mixture on turbocharged engines is handled differently. In all cases, you should refer to the engine failure in flight checklist for your aircraft. Summary267 Max plays audio from ATC and the NTSB press conference and discusses what preceded the fatal breakup of a medevac Pilatus PC-12 in Nevada. The aircraft departed Reno, International Airport on February 24, 2023 at about 9 PM. It was snowing lightly at the time, and moderate turbulence and icing were reported in the area. It was a medevac flight with a pilot and four passengers, including a patient. Approximately 15 minutes after departure, the aircraft turned off the instrument departure procedure it was flying, turning about 90 degrees to the right. It appears the autopilot was disconnected about the time of the turn and that the pilot hand flew the airplane to get it back on the original course. About a minute later, it began a steep spiraling turn to the right with a high descent rate. Max discusses possible reasons the autopilot may have become disconnected. Summary 265 Max talks about Precipitation Static, sometimes called p-static. P-static is a phenomenon that can affect aircraft in flight, particularly in areas of high humidity or where there is precipitation. It is a form of electrostatic discharge that can cause interference with an aircraft's communication and navigation systems. Static electricity is created by air friction as an aircraft flies, and when the electric charge accumulates sufficiently to discharge, radio interference is generated. Summary 264 Max reads listener letters and feedback. An FAA employee recommends pilots adopt the newer phraseology for declaring an emergency, which is "requesting priority handling." He believes pilots are reluctant to declare an emergency, as it suggests that what went wrong was their fault. The newer phraseology results in the same service provided by ATC; they'll still ask for souls on board, and fuel remaining, and you can still deviate as needed, but you don't need to say the words "I'm declaring an emergency."
