It's taken a while to get this edited, largely due to some personal issues on my end - in addition to the general fatigue that comes with the global shutdown. I managed to outsource the editing of two other episodes we recorded at that time, but now that I've managed to pull myself out of the single worst mental health episode I've ever experienced, we should be back up and running soon. With this finally done, we're hoping to get a few more episodes recorded in the coming months. On a personal note, I would like to offer my deepest apologies to Jack Latimore, who was kind enough to give us his time, I'm sorry this took such a long time to publish.- DeanG'day voters and welcome to the show notes for the seventh episode we recorded in 2020; we are 3 White Guys + Guest, a political podcast for a cynical nation. Our plus guest today is Birpai-Dunghutti journalist, writer with the Guardian and editor with NITV, Jack Latimore.Links:twitter.com/LatimoreJacktwitter.com/NITVfacebook.com/NITVAustraliaNITV HomeTake It Blak PodcastRoyal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody RecommendationsRoyal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Full ReportFull shownotes available at shutupandreadthis.com

This podcast is recorded on the lands of the Dharug, the muwinina, the Gadigal of Eora nation, and the Dharawal. We pay our respects to elders past and present and acknowledge the elders of tomorrow. This land was stolen and sovereignty was never ceded, Australia owes a debt that can never be repaid and must come to terms with the historic and ongoing genocide of the First Nations. There is no revolution without Treaties. G'day voters and welcome to the first anniversary of 3 White Guys + Guest, a political podcast for a cynical nation. Twelve months ago and against all odds, Scott Morrison was returned as Prime Minister and Australia looked ready to neck itself. In that time three white guys decided to do something radical, start a podcast. Over the following year, they witnessed the end of accountability, the collapse of journalistic integrity, and the failure of public leadership on such an epic scale that it sparked the fire of revolution in their hearts. The podcast went from vaguely humourous vanity project to serious conversation about where the nation (and the world) is headed, with a focus on finding a solution to a system that has been designed to benefit those at the top while crushing those who do all the work. National and global governance had been given a corporate makeover and for all intents and purposes, the car was driving itself, Parliament was no more than theatre and the public sector was being automated. Looking back we can see corruption, cronyism, profiteering, and a callous disregard for the lives of those living on this land, and that’s just in 12 months. It is looking more and more like the Australian experiment has failed, and Donald Horne’s assessment of Australia as a lucky country run mainly by second-rate people who share in its luck has never seemed more appropriate. This is the ninth episode of 2020, and our plus guest today is socialist, trade unionist, and former Labor Senator Doug Cameron.Find us on Twitter: @3whiteguyspod Full shownotes available at shutupandreadthis.com

Ostensibly a funny idea, it recently included a (now viral) public service announcement sketch that involved some of Australia's most televised faces telling those watching not to start a podcast in this time of pandemic.A fairly innocuous bit that's amusing in a broad sense. For those who don't know, podcasting is just AM radio on the internet, most people listen on their phones. The original viral tweet was posted two months ago, just as the lockdowns were beginning, and at a time where coronavirus podcasts were kicking off. It was funny and topical, Nicola Coughlan's wry tone befitting the brevity of a platform like Twitter. This isn't to say that this is an original joke by any stretch, lots of straight guys be making podcasts, exhibit A: yours truly. But the context and framing of the joke is too similar to ignore. However, this isn't just an issue of joke-stealing comedy writers and/or theft of intellectual property, it's also an issue of who tells the joke.An Irish millennial actress whose career has just taken off cracking wise about the spare time people may have soon is very different to a stale group of (overwhelmingly) Boomer and Gen X opinion writers and minor celebrities lecturing downward at people who have been forced to stay indoors for upwards of two months. One of the central issues Australia faces is the cult of celebrity destroying the concept of public leadership, as the status quo benefits those willing to do anything to stay in the limelight. The nation is as stagnant as the careers of those involved with this clip, and it highlights a much bigger problem everyone wants to ignore: class warfare.Find us on Twitter: @3WhiteGuysPod Show notes available at shutupandreadthis.com

If we are to be the allies we claim to be, the onus is on us to put our bodies on the line to protect those who may not be cut loose after a few hours in custody. I'm not here to lecture, learning how pervasive my privilege tends to be has been the most powerful lesson I've experienced this year. If we're going to use our privilege for good, we need to be capable of recognising where our blind spots are, especially when it comes to listening to those on the front lines in the fight against the police state. Solidarity means standing with those who hurt your feelings when you weren't as woke as you thought. Disagreements can be had behind doors, but we need to stop publicly splintering the left, and I'm as guilty of that as anyone. Also, the new power for the government passed late last year was the ability to deploy the ADF (not the AFP) in the event of an emergency, which can be declared on national security grounds by Peter Dutton. Climate change is destroying life on this planet.Capitalism is destroying life on this planet.Billionaires are destroying life on this planet.Globally, people are waking up to what is happening to them and they will not tolerate this abuse any longer.Take to the streets.Resist.Stand in solidarity.Together we can survive.Full shownotes available at shutupandreadthis.com

This bipartisan approach to punishing Australians for losing a job has created a system of entrenched poverty and desperate people are now at their wits end. There are a number of things Australia could do to address this, but the fact that those in Canberra have refused to lift the rate of Newstart for a quarter of a century has really become a framing device for the debate. Issues like robo-debt, cutting off payments, work for the dole, the cashless welfare card, road-testing punitive measures in Indigenous communities, and forcing thousands of vulnerable people off other support pensions and on to Newstart has created a powerful movement that is starting to gain some traction in the media. And the fact that the only thing the government has to say in response (especially after they manufactured a recession through inaction and ideological lunacy) is "the best form of welfare is a job" means that we're officially in the upside-down.Just today we've learned that there are 19 applications for every entry level position advertised, and that's a conservative assessment, the reality is likely much worse. There are literally no jobs. The government is actively hurting the capacity of people to find work through their punitive schemes that demonise the unemployed. The government should be investing in public jobs because decades of austerity has fuelled generations of neglect, and the private sector has absolutely failed to deliver on what they promised when the government contracts were tendered, if they were tendered. The system has failed. And those in charge of it are actively creating more harm as they continue to blame the unemployed for the lack of jobs. Will it be viva la revolucion, or suck it up sweetheart? Let's solve this once and for all.Our plus guest is Jeremy Paul, unemployed wastrel, dole bludger, drug addict and general ne'er do well, he has been forced to deal with the Department of Human Services in all the worst ways, but doesn't complain because then Rupert Murdoch will cancel him. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. We are on track to exceed two degrees of global warming, and given the reticence of global governments to address climate change, it's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. If it gets better.Climate change policy has ended the career of every Prime Minister since Howard left office, and still nothing is being done. Emissions are increasing endlessly, and have done so since the carbon tax legislation was scrapped. And all we get from those at the top is more obfuscation, half-measures, and coal bandied about on the floor of parliament by the now Prime Minister Scott Morrison, as though all of this is a big joke. So, are we going to die? Is it all Mad Max from here? Or can we still do something to prevent the worst case scenario from eventuating? It's time to slip, slop, and slap as we gear up for the end of the world.Extinction RebellionFull shownotes available at shutupandreadthis.com

And the fact that we have to lead with that is devastating, because we shouldn't have to set aside special episodes for Indigenous guests, because all issues in this country affect the Indigenous community.Dark Emu - Culture and HistoryCurtain The PodcastFull shownotes available at shutupandreadthis.com

G'day voters, this is the inaugural episode of 3 White Guys + Guest, a political podcast for a cynical nation. We had a couple of teething issues for this first one, not too bad hopefully, but we should be on top of this in the future. Going forward, this should *hopefully* be a fortnightly podcast, depending on what's happening in the world. This will likely be the longest episode we put out, simply because there was so much to consider in the wake of Labor shitting their pants like a failed ad man in a southern Sydney Maccas. It was supposed to be the unloseable election. This is why we can't have nice things. Sean McCallum works two odd jobs because a guy can't get a break in this town. He has always had a soft spot for the underdog and someday hopes to see the world saved from being burned alive. In his spare time he writes music and his masters in film production means he is qualified to work for exposure. Nick Mack is a former hack who spent too long in the horrible digital newsrooms of two of Australia's biggest commercial networks, writing yarns for jerks before reporting on social media outrage became too much and he needed to adjust his horizons. Now he works for a trade union, fighting the good fight and musing that hopefully one day we'll have revolution. Dean Cool is the online pseudonym of a man tired of fighting over scraps while the political class grow fat on our labour. He dropped out of university with honours and after years of online bitching, started writing about politics the day Tony Abbott became Prime Minister. To date, his greatest single accomplishment was winning a t-shirt in a jellybean guessing competition. You can catch us on Twitter: @3WhiteGuysPod Nick: @nkmccallum Sean: @SeanAMcCallum Dean: @realDeanCool The theme music is The Hill by Pax Canis.
