Acknowledgement of Country//News Headlines//Avery Howard, Vice President of the Australian Unemployed Workers' Union (AUWU) and JobSeeker recipient, speaks with us on the 5th anniversary of the COVID-19 supplement about the drastic and immediate impact that it had to alleviate poverty for nearly a million people across so-called Australia. The Morrison Government's subsequent decision to end the supplement plunged welfare recipients back into poverty, sparking widespread condemnation by anti-poverty activists. The AUWU, Anti-Poverty Network South Australia, Antipoverty Centre, Anti-Poverty Network Queensland, and Nobody Deserves Poverty are commemorating the anniversary with a press conference today at Parliament House, as well as an online event on Monday the 24th of March reflecting on the impacts of the COVID-19 supplement and its significance for welfare recipients.//Last Saturday the 15th of March, a vigil was held outside the State Library of Victoria on the anniversary of the Christchurch mosque massacre in 2019, honouring the 51 lives lost in this tragedy. We hear singing and words of cross-community solidarity shared at the rally by Jasmine, Zari, and other members of the local Māori community, with speakers introduced by MC Sara Baarini.//We hear a speech by Nina, a member of Formerly Incarcerated Girls Justice Advocates Melbourne (FIGJAM), at the snap action for Poccum's Law held on Parliament steps this past Tuesday the 18th of March to condemn the Victorian Labor Government's new ‘tough on crime' bail bill. Nina was introduced by Maggie Munn, proud Gungarri advocate, who is the First Nations Justice advocate at Human Rights Law Centre. During the rally, attendees learned that the Bail Amendment (Tough Bail) Bill 2025 passed the Legislative Assembly with only three votes against. The bill inserts significant restrictions to bail access and has been widely condemned by Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, the community legal sector, family violence prevention organisations and youth support organisations for its regressive approach that will increase rates of incarceration for both children and adults in Victoria. Read the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Services' 'Bail Saves Lives: Poccum's Law is the Way Forward' statement here, and Flat Out's media statement on the bail laws here.//Dr James Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Director of the Bachelor of Criminology at Deakin University. He's a leading researcher in the field of black markets, cybercrime, and the dark web illicit drug trade, as well as a Tobacco Harm Reduction Advisor for Harm Reduction Australia. In this interview, Dr Martin breaks down where law enforcement clashes with proven harm reduction approaches, how the dark web functions, and lays out australia's approach to vaping. He also discusses what's going on with vaping regulations, enforcing this law, changing societal perceptions of nicotine, and moral panics.//

Hello and welcome to another iteration of the Monday Breakfast show with Rob and Eric. This episode features: An interview from Yeah Nah Pasaran on Thursday 8th August in which Cam and Andy speak with Aurelien Mondon (lecturer in politics at University of Bath, and co-convener of Reactionary Politics Research Network) about racist rioting in the UK and Belfast in the wake of the murders in Southport. You can catch Yeah Nah Pasaran, 4:30pm Thursdays on 3CR, and listen back the the full interview with Aurelien by heading to their program page. On Saturday the 16th of August between an estimated 150 people attended a counterprotest on the steps of the Victorian Parliament to disrupt an event held by TERF and founder of the Women's Action Group Michelle Uriaru. A heavy police presence asserted their dominance by preventing the counterprotesters, a group of trans people, allies, and anti-fascists, from getting too close to the crowd of transphobes. However, the counterprotesters were able to disrupt the event by not only outnumbering the terfs but also playing music which the counterprotesters would dance to. To help capture the moments of Queer and Trans Joy in the crowd at that counterprotest, Rob spoke to a few of its attendees. The first was recorded while the counterprotest was happening outside state parliament; the second was recorded at Fitzroy Park, where the TERFs were supposed to mobilize following their 'rally' but didn't for reasons unknown. On Monday 5th August, Karina sat down with Jeremy Poxon from the Australian Unemployed Workers Union, in Coburg Mall. They discuss the day's intended activities (leafletting Coburg's welfare recipients attending some of the area's worst-rated Job Service Providers), plus a look at the Govt Inquiry into Workforce Aus, so-called 'mutual' obligations, the AUWU's campaigns and initiatives around welfare rights, and more. The AUWU National Advocacy Hotline is open Monday to Friday 10 AM - 2 PM AEDT,Ph: (03) 9811 7064 or (freecall) 1800 289 848. To hear the full interview, catch Wednesday's City Limits show from 9 - 10AM. From the 8th to the 14th of September the biggest weapons expo in so-called Australia will take place at the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre. Its existence hasn't attracted much attention in the mainstream media, despite the fact that companies supporting genocides will be there. However, the planned disruption, as listeners will have undoubtedly heard about through announcements on 3CR, has. To speak more about the event and coverage of the planned disruption, Rob spoke with Nat Farah, an organiser for Disrupt Wars.Last week researched released by the Grounded Community Land Trust Advocacy provided insight into exactly how Airbnb is compounding housing shortages and pushing rental prices beyond the reach of people both across the globe and here in 'Australia'. To find out how the global conglomerate does so, Rob talked with Karl Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Grounded Community Land Trust Advocacy and former 3CR broadcaster. Songs played: 'Black Magic' - Baker Boy ft. Now he is the co-presenter of Breadline, a program of the Australian Unemployed Workers Union, broadcasting on Mondays at 6pm, here on 3CR. Daryl works on the advice line at the AUWU, letting people know about their rights as Social Security beneficiaries and generally working against the government. He says it is rewarding work. Daryl has had many different jobs in his life, from welding, truck driving, to the meatworks in Donald. Along the way he learnt to drum and eventually played percussion in orchestras and theatre companies when the band wasn't practising in his bedsit in Ascot Vale, a great location to watch the fireworks over the Melbourne Show. SUDDENLY: a Frank Sinatra podcast

The word "homosexual" was first uttered on American television on the night of October 21st, 1963. The show was Breaking Point, a drama series set in a psychiatric hospital. The episode was a confronting take on sexual harassment and toxic masculinity that directly posed the question to its audience: "What is a man?" Despite network objection, this milestone in queer history happened solely because of the determination of the show's producer: George Lefferts.  This show was just one of many socially conscious, thoughtful and progressive projects from Lefferts, a man whose long life was defined by his writing and his deep empathy for others. In 1960, he spent hundreds of hours interviewing everyday women about their problems for a groundbreaking show called Special for Women. But it was in radio that he'd really cut his teeth in the early days, working on dramatised science fiction shows like Dimension X and X Minus One in the 1950s. In 1953, he worked with Frank Sinatra on a noir drama series for NBC Radio, Rocky Fortune. Together, they came up with a wacky noir premise for which almost every episode followed the same formula: Rocky is unemployed. Rocky gets a new job. It all goes wrong for him in some way, and he ends up implicated in a murder. Rocky talks his way out of it and catches the killer. Rocky ends up unemployed again. The show was not a hit at the time, and decades of Sinatra biographers have dedicated one or two pithy sentences to it at most.  Today, with every episode widely available online in the public domain, Rocky Fortune sounds different. This week on SUDDENLY, we listen to two full episodes of the show plus one of To Be Perfectly Frank, Sinatra's other NBC show from the same period that saw him in the role of DJ. Looking at the work of Lefferts, Ernest Kinoy and Norm Sickel, we attempt to put Rocky Fortune in his proper context - and reclaim him as a hero for the marginalised, for women, and for the unemployed. Selected works of George Lefferts: * Dimension X: "The Professor Was a Thief" (1950) Radio episode, adapted from a story by L. Ron Hubbard. Available on Spotify, YouTube, Internet Archive. * Rocky Fortune (1953-54) Complete radio series available on Spotify, YouTube, Internet Archive. * X Minus One: "The Defenders" (1956) Radio episode, adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick.  Available on Spotify, YouTube, Internet Archive. * World Wide '60: "The Living End" (1960) TV film about senior citizens, cast with nursing home residents. Lost or unavailable. * Special for Women (1961) TV series, either unavailable or lost. Book of original scripts available to read in full on Internet Archive. One episode, "The Lonely Woman", is available on film at the Library of Congress in Washington DC. * Breaking Point: "The Bull Roarer" (1962) First use of the word "homosexual" on TV. Watch the full episode on YouTube. * Teacher, Teacher (1969) TV movie about an underqualified and ill-tempered teacher taking on the education of a disabled child. Watch on YouTube. * Family Album, U.S.A. (1991) Sitcom designed for English learners. Complete video series available on YouTube.  Norm Sickel was a writer active in 1950s American radio. He wrote banter for Sinatra's 15-minute DJ series, To Be Perfectly Frank. Later, he wrote for Rocky Fortune, apparently at Sinatra's request. His episodes were among the most dramatic and socially conscious of the series. They differed in tone considerably from the comedic noir that Rocky Fortune became most known for. Later, his poems inspired the 1956 instrumental album Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color. Little else seems to be publicly known about Sickel. If you have any more information on what else he might have done creatively or where he ended up, we'd be interested in hearing from you. Join the Australian Unemployed Workers' Union (AUWU) at their website, or follow them on Twitter. AUWU member Jeremy Poxon is also a great Twitter follow to keep up with the latest around Australia's corrupt and cruel welfare regime. "I have always been of the belief that once you can overturn the colonial mentality consuming our governments— resulting in the continued denial of justice of First Nations peoples and the oppression we all live under — you will, in effect, overturn the same mentality that is keeping 90% of our population prey to the whims of big business-run governments. On January 26, come and join us, walk with us and learn from us. For far too long, knowledge in this country has been confined to the world of academia. We, the First Nations peoples, carry a knowledge as old as time itself. Yes, we are protesting but we are all more than willing to share with those who walk with us." - KCZane discusses article by Fremantle councillor Sam Wainwright “Australia day: Change the date”.
