This week, Lee discusses the ways in which we can use the art of comedy to overcome resistance to change, and how by thinking differently, we can make sure that we act differently, finding new solutions to problems that we may not have considered before. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you want to achieve different results, then you must think differently. Those thoughts will create and drive new ways of implementing action. Refusal to comply with change is always a personal choice. Each person chooses whether or not support an initiative. Change, therefore, is a personal choice. When delivering information or data or any kind of address, we always communicate in the ways in which we like to receive. In comedy, we have two ways of delivering - the set up and punchline. We should vary the ways in which we deliver both so as to signal the points at which engagement must follow. Timing is everything. For thousands of years before contact with Europeans, the Karuk people, like many others, tended their land with fire. The Karuk tribe is one of the largest in California, spanning parts of Humboldt and Siskiyou counties along the Klamath River. When the federal government took over managing the forest, it stripped the Karuk people of their relationship with fire, and that has had profound effects. These days, the forest is overgrown, and thick with dry brush. Last fall, the massive Slater Fire decimated cultural sites and homes. KQED Science reporter Danielle Venton looks at the relationship between the Karuk and cultural burning, and their negotiations with the state of California to get that control back.

We speak with Raquel Berrios of the Puerto Rico-based indie duo Buscabulla, which she leads with her husband Luis Alfredo del Valle. Melanie Bates isn't backing off her crusade to try to get Cincinnati Public Schools fully reopened this spring, despite criticism from the teachers' union and some parents.  In fact, the veteran school member is speaking out even more about the need for students to return to the classroom five days a week after the district recently received proficiency test results.  In an interview with The Enquirer's That's So Cincinnati podcast, Bates said students' proficiency results dropped 17% year over year. In fall 2019, 38% of students were at or above state proficiency, Bates said. But last fall those results dropped to 21%, and Bates attributes the drop off to schools being closed or mostly closed since the outset of the pandemic in March 2020. "I have two grandchildren in Cincinnati Public Schools," said Bates, the longest-tenured member on the board. "I have a daughter who's a first-grade teacher in another public school district. In conversations, the difference between what that district is providing five days a week to their students and what we are, is just devastating." "Our children, in many, many cases, are a year behind," Bates added.
