Longtime beauty executive Lori Singer has been instrumental in some of the biggest fragrance license deals of the past 20 years. Singer spent more than a decade at Coty, where she worked on bestselling fragrances by Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Balenciaga and Nautica. She also tripled global net revenues for Marc Jacobs with its iconic Daisy franchise launched in 2007. Singer got her start at Revlon, and her CV also includes Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Unilever and Benetton Group.  “I've spent my entire career in beauty. I'm sort of a beauty lifer,” she told Glossy. “I fell in love on day one at Revlon, my first job, and I really have never looked back.”  Singer joined Parlux in 2019 to grow its license business and immediately set her sights on Billie Eilish.  “Other than music, fragrance and scent are everything to her. So, upon meeting her and hearing about her deep knowledge [of fragrance, we knew it was a fit for Parlux],” Singer told Glossy. “She knows ingredients and she knows about olfactory territory. She has had a natural nose for scents." By 2021, her first scent, Eilish, was released, which she followed up with Eilish No. 2 the next year and Eilish No. 3 in 2023.  Fast forward to last week, and Parlux released Eilish's fourth fragrance, called Your Turn. The new scent is priced at $90 for 100 milliliters and available DTC — it will launch in Ulta Beauty doors later this spring. Your Turn is gender-neutral and described as “warm, woody and fresh” with notes of peach, ginger and sandalwood.  Frank Voelkl, principal perfumer at fragrance house Firmenich, was the “nose.” One of the most famous perfumers working today, he has created Glossier's You franchise, Phlur's Mood Ring and Father Figure, and Le Labo's cult Santal 33, among others.  Parlux is a global licensee for celebrities, fashion houses and lifestyle brands. The company launched in 1984 and is privately held. Its licenses include Kenneth Cole, Vince Camuto, Jessica Simpson, Steve Madden and Jason Wu, among others. Most recently, Parlux entered into a partnership with basketball player LeBron James to create The Shop, a line of grooming products distributed through Walmart. Then, in late 2024, the company launched its first fragrance with influencer-turned-designer Danielle Bernstein, the creator behind WeWoreWhat, called WeWoreWhat 001.  Later this year, the company will celebrate another milestone: Paris Hilton's 30th fragrance over 20 years. Called Iconic, the scent will launch this spring.  Singer joined the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss the secret sauce behind Parlux's celeb fragrances, the evolving fragrance consumer and 2025 industry predictions.

She also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong innovation pipeline to keep up with the fast-moving beauty industry. Success, Stacey explains, is all about finding the right balance between delivering short-term results and pursuing a long-term vision, while avoiding over-reliance on any single product or sales channel. Top Dress Picks For Summer 2023 | EP 146

Fashion Crimes Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2023 26:49

It's summer dress season! Are you ready? Your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz is back this week with what o wear this summer for our fashion besties over 40 – and we mean – wayyyy over 40!     First and foremost, let's go back to Holly's #1 Fashion Rule:   Shop for Fit. Not for Price.     When you shop for price, you can run into the danger of sacrificing fit for price, which is a huge fashion crime. #howboutno   Thank you to our faithful listeners and followers for asking Holly about summer dresses (and summer festival wear).  The options for summer dresses are completely endless, but Holly has picked some that she has been wearing herself, that are comfortable yet stylish.    Let's talk about body issues, as summer weather begs for less clothing which may expose areas you may not be comfortable having on display. Some of our listeners tell us they are worried about showing their arms and/or legs. Other listeners have tummy issues.  #TAKEANUMBER   Summer-weight clothing simply lends itself to exposing these areas, so it's best to have a game plan if you are worried about showing off some of your body parts.     HOT TIP:  No one sees your body as critically as you do. Your arms and legs ARE JUST FINE!  There are solutions for blemishes, veins, and whatever else you are overly critical of.  Don't give up too easily!  Ever heard of DermaBlend? It's make-up for those places on your body you may want to cover or hide.  It's a miracle product.   So, if you have veins on your shins, or varicose veins or spider veins, it's okay. You can get a dress that's at the knee, or below. And use the DermaBlend. It's not that serious. You will thank me later.     As for hiding the tops of your arms that may not be in perfect shape, no one is asking you to go totally sleeveless or wear a strapless top. You CAN find short sleeves or a flutter sleeve that offer a bit more coverage. There is no reason to schvitz in 90 degree weather. Your arms don't need to be the most favorite part of your body. Work around them!    “When you let your body issues come before your style, then we've got a real problem, then you're stuck, you get stuck. So let's get you unstuck.” - Holly Katz, Personal Stylist   SUMMER-WEIGHT RUNNING AROUND DRESSES:  If you're running errands, playing chauffeur or hanging in your own backyard outside something obviously more casual and less expensive is the way to go here.     Brands Holly Loves:    Nicole Miller (friend of the podcast) Ramy Brook  Rails  Poupette NYC  Marissa Webb  Dress the Population    They have a ton of selections that are great for activities. Also, when you have a dress that you end up wearing, for like around the house activities are chores, these are things that are usually too casual for a night out that you can demote them to a more casual section of your closet.     HOT TIP: Try a kimono! Wear over a tank top and jean shorts! Or over jeans. It's a great non-dress, dressy look!     THE DAY DRESS:    The next level up in dresses is a daytime dress, of course, which is considered a nicer dress, say that you would wear to a lunch, day party, baby shower, etc. Not something that you would wear just kicking around or going to carpool. Something that you would want to show off and look dressed and put together.    Hot TIP: Remember, just because you're dressed, it does not mean you are dressed up - you're just dressed. Also, you need to have a bag and shoes, you cannot carry your everyday tote bag or shopping bag.  #UMNO   Don't forget about dress codes: a day dress is lightweight. It can be cute and dressy, but it is for daytime. Evening dresses are heavier weight, or embellished, or made from finer fabrics.    SPECIAL EVENT DRESSES:    Now, if you don't have a variety of dresses to choose from the minute you get invited to something fun, you feel unprepared and you panic and run out and then you get something new, grasping at straws, hoping that you made the right choice. Take the time to BUILD YOUR WARDROBE over time when you can find dresses for fit, not occasion and certainly not for price.   So this is why building and elevating your style is so important.      Brands Holly Loves:    AMUR  Meg  Derek Lamb 10 Crosby  Jason Wu  Rosetta Getty  MILLY  Frame  Ba&sh    HOT TIP: If you find a dress style or brand you love, and it doesn't fit well, don't forget you can have items altered. Don't pass up on a quality dress or fit, just because it is too long or not fitted in the areas you need. Most dry cleaners or tailors can make quick fixes that are game changers!    EVENING DRESSES:    If you have an evening dress that you wore 20 years ago, it needs to go. #sorrynotsorry They will and do go out of style. Even it is black-it's irrelevant.  Black tie dresses don't last forever. And if you keep something for that long, that means it's life in the spotlight is probably over. It's okay. It had a great life.   Brands Holly Loves:    Sara Roka  Alexander McQueen  Naeem Khan  Pamella Roland  Markarian  Chiani Boni  Rickie Freeman for Teri John  Lela Rose  Kika Vargas    Special occasion dresses are an investment. Period. End of statement. So plan for that. You don't buy them often. So go for quality over quantity.   PS:  Do not forget to go to Holly's Pinterest Board for more summer dress ideas and links to purchase. Check out our youtube channel! We cute, we cute.   Be sure to listen for all our FASHION BESTIE Shout-Outs this week – because there are a TON!    Don't forget to submit your fashion questions to Holly on our social, and we may just pick your topic for our next episode!     Listen, love, follow, share and subscribe to our FREE PODCAST! "If someone comes to me, and they say, 'Oh, I have a new brand. It's a startup.' First of all, I have to like the person, they have to like me. It's a two way street. And that's the most important thing with anyone in life, not just work. In life, why do we make friends with who we make friends with? They are relationships. And if you connect with someone, magic will happen. If you don't connect with someone, and someone doesn't understand or have the same aesthetic or a similar way of thinking – you have to have something in common with someone. “It was really fun and ridiculous and great, and that resonates with people because we've all got inner children. You know, I'm still a little girl at heart. That doesn't go away. You don't suddenly become a grownup, become the most sensible person on the planet, and if you can tap into that on some level, it doesn't even have to be clever. You know, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best, the sweetest.I also have a sense of humor. I like to laugh. I like to play music in the office. I like to tell jokes. I like to watch documentaries. I like to watch funny things, vintage, new. I don't think there's any right or wrong way. And I don't like perfection or everything having to be perfect because I'm a bit scruffy, but I do wear flowers in my hair because it makes me happy. And I do like to get dressed up every day and wear an outfit. If it's a vintage dress from years ago or something that makes me happy, whatever that is, I like to start my day feeling happy.”Oberon Sinclair is the CEO and founder of the creative and branding agency, My Young Auntie. They are lovely gentlemen, and they called me aside and said, 'We'd love to get you involved in our coworking space that we are doing.' And we really curated an interesting community of people. And have had a lot of interesting people do talks, from Paul Smith to Salman Rushdie to Wu-Tang Clan, Tom Sachs, and Ariana Huffington. And I've hosted Prince William and Princess Kate. We've had some incredible people here and I love talking to people, and I love hosting these conversations. I did one last night with my dear friend Carlos Alomar, who was the musical director and long-time collaborator with David Bowie for 30 years. And I just love people's stories. So for me, it's inspirational. Jason works in movies and the entertainment industry as a lighting operator and gaffer. While the entertainment industry has always interested Jason, he decided to focus on the production side of it rather than being on the big screens. After graduating from Michigan State University in 2018, Jason made the decision to move to Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta has slowly become a buzzing location for movie and television production, so it only made sense for Jason to make the move. While moving to a completely new place on your own can be exciting, it has its challenges along the way. Jason has worked hard to find some success within the industry and I know that his dedication and work ethic will take him places. I've always considered Jason to be a really humble, dedicated, and great person. It's an honor to be able to call him and friend and I'm glad that conversations like this has given us the reminder to stay connected and to get back in touch. This week on the Sinica Podcast, Kaiser chats with Indiana University political scientist Jason Wu about his work on China's ideological landscape. With so many now framing the contest between the U.S. (or, more broadly, "the West") and China in terms of ideology, it makes sense to examine what "ideology" means to each party, to get a sense of what China's actual ideology consists of, and how Chinese people understand their own ideological positioning relative to concepts like "left" and "right" that are familiar in the West. Wu's research yields some very surprising results: In most countries that have been studied, the degree of ideological constraint — coherence or consistency among different issue positions — tends to be higher among people with greater knowledge of politics. But in China, as with so many other things, just the opposite appears to be true.4:23 – What is the meaning of "ideology"?15:37 – What is China's ideology?20:17 – On "The Nature of Ideology in Urban China" and the odd inverse correlation between political knowledge and ideological consistency in China40:18 – On "Categorical Confusion: Ideological Labels in China" and the meaning of "left" and "right" in ChinaA transcript of this podcast is available on SupChina.com.Recommendations:Jason: The campus novels Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis and Straight Man by Richard Russo; and the two-person board game Twilight StruggleKaiser: The Magic Mountain by Thomas MannSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Not even a country wide winter storm could stop the kickoff of Fashion Month! And thank goodness because we all needed something good. New York didn’t disappoint with Proenza Schouler acting as a particularly bright spot and Jason Wu giving us some covet worthy coats. Rebecca Minkoff was consistent offering her usual easy to wear dresses and bags, but this time with vegan leather options. This week’s Style Snacks is entertainment jam packed with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s pregnancy announcement, Kim and Kanye’s divorce, the SATC reboot missing even more key characters and the Cruella movie trailer drop. Not to worry, some fashion news happened too – John Legend x Sperry debuts, Alexander McQueen becomes the first in Vestaire Collective’s “Brand Approved” program and a fashion exhibit is actually happening in real life in Paris. www.runwaywalkscurrenttalks.com https://www.instagram.com/runwaywalkscurrenttalks/ https://twitter.com/RunwayTalks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW7W32h_5l7nnlrL1vazjlw/featured

This week on The BoF Podcast, designer Jason Wu and BoF’s senior correspondent Chantal Fernandez examine the evolving purpose of runway shows and what New York Fashion Week might look like after the pandemic. Fashion Week looks very different this season, with most designers choosing to present their collections through digital lookbooks and short films instead of traditional runway shows. But even after the pandemic subsides, New York Fashion Week isn’t likely to revert to its prior form. As BoF senior correspondent Chantal Fernandez reported in a BoF Professional article last week, the “unbundling” of New York Fashion Week has been happening for years. ”What worked 10, 15 years ago, doesn’t work today,” designer Jason Wu told BoF’s Imran Amed on this week’s podcast. “The backbone of American fashion has always been about diversifying and being less traditional in its approach in what luxury and what fashion looks like.” ”Fashion week has become something of a different creature, but that happened long before the pandemic,” he added. “I feel like it’s my job to keep part of it alive, even though it’s forever changing.”   External clip courtesy of Fashion By Look - Eleanor Lambert: Defining Decades of Fashion To subscribe to The BoF Podcast, please follow this link.   Related Articles: The Unbundling of New York Fashion Week What Is New York Fashion Week Without Its Billion-Dollar Brands? There are some women that just stand out from the crowd and attract your attention like a big magnet. That was Beth Nicholson Crago when I first met her at an event.I approached Beth and shamelessly asked: "What's your story?" Turns out, she is one of the two amazing ladies behind the best-kept-secret- Opelle, a luxury handbag brand that is designed and handcrafted in Toronto for women looking for something "functional and aesthetically refined".In spite of Beth's impressive career of working at Michael Kors, Derek Lam, Thakoon, while having Jason Wu, Moda Operandi on her client list, Beth confesses that fashion is not her first love. With an English degree from McGill specializing in acting and theatre, Beth was chasing after her dream of becoming an actress. After having her first taste of rejection, she soon realized that she didn't like acting enough to go through the hardships associated with that career. This realization has led her to the door of fashion. The rest is history. On the couch beside her son's play table, she opens up about the conversation she had with her parents during high school that sparked something in her, we exchange feelings about the Old and New Celine, and she shares the struggles she chose to go through and the ones she turned away from.
