    Knowing Our Place

Paul has been dealing with the problem of division over ministry personalities. Here, he does so by bringing back to the forefront the topic of godly vs. worldly wisdom. Paul reminds them who they are in Christ. And because of who they are in Christ, they should realize that they don't belong to particular ministers, but instead ministers are gifts given to minister to the church. Worldly wisdom causes us to factionalize, godly wisdom causes us to see our place in Christ. We must understand our place in Christ. Paul's letter is to the church, the ekklesia, the assembled people of God in Corinth. But this people is not only God's assembly, they are also God's temple. They are called and gifted by God to work upon His temple. Therefore, they must use the proper materials when building, and they must do only those things that will build the Temple and never be guilty of destroying it. God is holy and just, and will not overlook the destruction of His temple. The same warning should be heeded by the church today. We don't have the right to determine how God's church is built. It is God's church, not our own. So let's build it with all our might, by His grace, as He instructs through His Word. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How are we supposed to view preachers? We are to see them as they are, servants of God. Paul teaches the Corinthians they were to view him and Apollos as God's servants, who were hired to work in God's field, and the field was the church in Corinth. God owns the workers, the field, and He alone can give the growth. There is no spiritual growth outside of God's action. That principle is still true for you and I today. The church, the preachers, and all spiritual growth, belongs to God. Preached by Lem Lane on September 8, 20191 Corinthians 3:5-9 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The church is no stranger to division. It was a problem as early as the first century. In this text, Paul teaches the Corinthians that their divisions based upon ministry personalities were evidence of their abiding carnality. Divisions within the church are anti-Christian, and are not in line with living in God's Spirit. May we be protected by God's grace from ever being used to sow division among God's people. Why do some believe the gospel, and others do not? Paul answered this question in the first chapter in this letter to the Corinthians by pointing to their calling, their being summoned by God into the fellowship of Jesus Christ. Here, he points to the reality that those who are born again, are those who have received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit indwelling them causes them to come to a convincing comprehension of that which was a mystery for centuries, and has now been revealed, namely God's plan of redemption culminating in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. We too should examine ourselves in light of this passage, and ensure we have come to a convincing comprehension of the truths of the gospel. And may we continue to pray that the Holy Spirit will illuminate our hearts and minds to see Scripture's truth. We consider the content, the presentation, and the goal of Paul's preaching. May we in our churches always ensure that we are preaching the simple gospel message of Christ crucified, and praying for the Spirit's power to transform lives through it. In the previous passage, Paul reminded the Corinthians of the seemingly weak and foolish message of the cross, which was God's power to save those whom He called to Himself. In this passage, Paul calls the Corinthians to think back to their conversion into Christianity, and remember their status in the world. The majority of the Corinthians were not the cream of society. Therefore, they had no reason to be prideful, and divide over ministry personalities and styles. The same is true for us. Reflecting upon our conversion reveals, only God deserves praise! Gods Foolishness pt 2: The Preaching

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2019 46:28

Paul was sent to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom. Why? Because it was God's intention to create two groups of people from this simple message of salvation. The message of the cross, WILL be deemed foolish by the perishing, and WILL be deemed the power and wisdom of God by all those God calls to Himself. In this sermon, we focus our attention upon verses 22-25. Paul recognized God's intentions. So when the people came with their demands of powerful signs from God and/or human wisdom, Paul instead gave them what he was commissioned to give: "We preach Christ crucified." May the church today be convinced that the gospel is the only power of God to salvation, and may we proclaim to all, a crucified Messiah. We continue our study of 1 Corinthians by consider 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, focusing upon verses 18-21 in this sermon. The church is often tempted to adopt methods and styles that "work." But if we're not careful, we end up aiming at a different goal than God Himself. God saves His people through the power of the message of the cross. And this message of the cross is deemed as foolish by the wisdom of man. Yet, both in the rejection and the acceptance of the Gospel, God's wisdom and power is displayed and He therefore is glorified. God doesn't need our help. The simple gospel is His power to save. In his introduction, we get a feel for how he will call the church to address the problems. Paul addresses this letter "to the church." It is to the ekklesia, or the called out, called together, assembly of God's people that he writes. In the early verses, he reminds the Corinthians to whom they belong, and how they were placed in the church to begin with. For it seems, in remembering who they are, they can fix what they've become.
