Questions? Comments? Text Us!Welcome to What's Your Spiritual Story: a new series from God: An Autobiography, The Podcast, featuring candid conversations with people whose spiritual lives have been reshaped by direct encounters with the divine. In this first installment, Jerry L. Martin speaks with pastor and podcaster Mark Groleau, who returns to the show exactly 100 episodes after his original appearance.Mark's story is one of radical transformation. Raised in a strict Oneness Pentecostal tradition, he was trained to preach, taught to defend doctrine, and discouraged from asking questions. But once he began studying literature and scripture through a critical lens, everything changed. What followed was a deconstruction of his inherited faith, a period of atheism, and an eventual reawakening through a more expansive vision of God.This episode follows Mark's evolving relationship with the divine, from the static, all-powerful deity of classical theism to a God who suffers, listens, and grows. Influenced by thinkers like John Caputo, Jacques Derrida, Greg Boyd, and Terence Fretheim, Mark now embraces process theology, which sees God not as removed from the world but as intimately involved in its unfolding.Jerry and Mark reflect on what it means to believe in a God who changes. They discuss suffering, divine vulnerability, and the tension between doctrine and experience. Mark also shares why Jesus' teachings have become central to his life, and why many Christians, ironically, ignore them. From Hebrew grammar to the Big Bang, from seminary classrooms to Buddhist temples in Korea, this is a conversation for anyone rethinking their faith and seeking something more relational, honest, and alive. If you've ever wrestled with the question of who, or what, God really is, this conversation offers a starting point for something deeper.Mentioned in this episode: Creation Untamed by Terence Fretheim, Not Sure by John Suk, #JesusIsMyGuru, Process Theology, Open Theism, Wikigod Podcast, Bereshit, PatripassianismOther Series:The podcast began with the Dramatic Adaptation of the book and now has several series:Life Wisdom Project: How to live a wiser, happier, and more meaningful life with special guests. From God To Jerry To You: Calling for the attention of spiritual seekers everywhere, featuring breakthroughs, pathways, and illuminations. Two Philosophers Wrestle With God: Sit in on a dialogue between philosophers about God and the questions we all have. What's On Our Mind- Connect the dots with Jerry and Scott over the most recent series of episodes. What's On Your Mind: What are readers and listeners saying? Text us your questions!Tom Oord is back! This time, we're discussing his "main thing": open and relational theology. We explore what it means and its significance in reshaping our understanding of God, love, prayer, and more. Tom answers our questions graciously, and we try to convince Randy that he's wrong. How is open and relational theology different from classical theism? What does it imply about prayer or freedom or evil and suffering? What does love have to do with it? Is it all just a bit too easy?As always, Tom is a great sport and a hoot to talk to. You may be familiar with the church and its pastor. Although the offense occurred a long time ago, the leadership failed to properly disclose this information to the congregation. Our intention is never to slander or tarnish anyone's reputation. Join Alex, Chris, and Jo as they dive into the deep (and sometimes nerdy!) waters of atonement theology. From heated debates on who exactly Jesus died for, to a fun detour into quantum theory and open theism, this episode blends big ideas with a light-hearted twist. In this episode, we explore the different views on the extent of the atonement, including Limited Atonement (or Particular Redemption), Unlimited Atonement, and Amyraldianism (Four-Point Calvinism). We also touch on Universalism and the eternal question of how wide God's grace extends. Things get extra theological as we discuss infralapsarianism and supralapsarianism—how God's plan for salvation unfolded in relation to the fall—and even dip into some quantum theory for all you theology geeks out there!

LEGACY BROADCAST * The Future is Open: Dr. Richard Rice, Loma Linda theology professor and a leading advocate of open theism, is interviewed by Denver Bible Church pastor Bob Enyart. (Enyart is the co-founder of opentheism.org.) Dr. Rice's book, The Openness of God, was published in 1980, 14 years before he co-authored the famed 1994 book by the same name that he co-authored with Pinnock, Hasker, Basinger, and Sanders. Rice and Enyart have a relaxed and very interesting discussion of open theism and recent developments, and then go back in history to consider the way that Arminius himself wrestled with the matter. * Book Blurb: Open theism has reached its adolescence. How did it get here? And where does it go from here? Since IVP's publication of The Openness of God in 1994, evangelical theology has grappled with the alternative vision of the doctrine of God that open theism offers. Responding to critics who claim that it proposes a truncated version of God that fails to account for Scripture and denies many of the traditional attributes of God, open theism's proponents contend that its view of God is not only biblically warranted but also more accurate―with a portrayal of God that emphasizes divine love for humanity and responsiveness to human free will. No matter what one's assessment, open theism inarguably has made a significant impact on recent theological discourse. Check out the YouTube Video Here! * Richard Rice: Now, twenty-five years later, Richard Rice recounts in this volume the history of open theism from its antecedents and early developments to its more recent and varied expressions. He then considers different directions that open theism might continue to develop in relation to several primary doctrines of the Christian faith. Today's Resource: Predestination & Free Will Seminar So much is at stake when people consider predestination and free will. Strong emotions often surface with a discussion of this topic. That passion points to our critical need to understand the truth regarding whether or not God has predetermined who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. Also, the question of whether or not God has planned out each person's life affects us. Does God have a plan for your life? Does a blueprint exist for your future? Did God predetermine whether or not you would get married, and to whom? Did God plan whether you would be wealthy or poor, happy or sad? If God does plan your life, does He do so in minute detail or in general themes? If God has a plan for your life, are you able to alter that plan? This topic directly influences people concerning how they live their lives. As Christians, we must seek God to accurately portray the LORD to others. For any misrepresentation of God will dishonor Him and perhaps bring harm to those misled. You can now order the seminar video in a 3-DVD set or MP4 video download.

In this episode, we look at the Old Testament reading for the third Sunday after Epiphany, which is Jonah 3:1-10. How does Jonah's story fit with the Epiphany theme "God revealed to the Gentiles?" Did God change his mind when he "relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them?"
[Part 1 of this two-parter: God, People, Prayer, Mystery: People Need to Pray More]Most Christians believe God is all-loving and all-powerful, but if this is the case, why does evil exist and how does prayer fit into the equation? Part two continues the conversation with author and theologian, Thomas J. Oord, explaining a specific belief in God termed "Open Theism." Open Theists suppose that not only is God limited in power, but for God to make people with true freewill, the future isn't knowable even to Him. While most Christians lend no credence to this theological framework, it's yet another way in which many Christians have attempted to reconcile human suffering with the existence of "an all-loving God." These questions have been baffling the deepest of thinkers for thousands of years. It's Jack Hoey, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd with Thomas J. Oord, taking a deep dive into the existence of God and evil.Thomas J. From 2016: John E Sanders is one among a number of evangelical theologians such as Greg Boyd who have embraced Open Theism – the view that God does not necessarily have foreknowledge of all future events and that the future is open. Many evangelicals believe Open Theism is a heresy – denying the omniscience of God and going against Biblical teaching. James White of Alpha and Omega ministries believes Open Theism is a serious heresy and defends a Calvinist view of God's sovereignty – that God has predestined all future events for his glory. They debate the issues. * Jesus: Fully God and fully man so fully free! Was Jesus able to sin? Of course. Otherwise, He could not be fully man, and He could not be tempted, and His righteousness would not be praiseworthy, and He could not love, because love must be freely given. But He became fully man, and He was tempted, and He is praiseworthy, and He does love. So, the answer is, yes. Bob continues broadcasting the cross examination of Will Duffy during the recent debate Is Open Theism Biblical, and notes that when a Calvinist challenges open theist testimony from Scripture by asking if it would contradict God being "impassible, impeccable, and immutable", one could hear district attorney Hamilton Burger objecting as he did in a 1960s courtroom drama, that this line of questioning was "incompetent, irrelevant, and immaterial." For not the "living God" but a stone idol is impassible, impeccable, and immutable. Also, consider that folks have a difficulty discerning between time and the measurement of time. So too many have difficulty comprehending the difference bewteen the future as a concept and a moment in the future. The concept of the future doesn't change but what may or may not happen in any particular moment in the future is open. So too with truth. The concept of truth doesn't change, whereas whether a particular statement is true or false (like, "breakfast is served") of course can change. Open theists though frequently encounter these kinds of easily avoided misconceptions. * Incompetent, irrelevant, and immaterial; impassible, impeccable, and immutable: When a Calvinist challenges open theist testimony from Scripture by asking if it would contradict God being "impassible, impeccable, and immutable", one could hear district attorney Hamilton Burger objecting as he did in a 1960s courtroom drama, that this line of questioning was "incompetent, irrelevant, and immaterial." Personhood is not only the right to life of every unborn child because those kids are made in God's likeness, but primarily and through eternity past, God Himself is a personal God, the one God existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Yet classical theology has turned God into more of a quantitative mathematical equation. We broadcast in part to correct all that!

* Straight Hillary: Actually, it's the etcetera that covers most of today's program. We begin with Hillary Clinton's announcement on the Howard Stern show that she is NOT a lesbian. Really. "Raise your right hand," as the pervert host said to her. But then we move on to airing something of eternal significance. * Duffy, Debate, and Recovering the Personal God: A BEL goal over the last 28 years has been to recover the personal God. Personhood is not only the right to life of every unborn child because those kids are made in God's likeness, but primarily and through eternity past, God Himself is a personal God, the one God existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Yet classical theology has turned God into more of a quantitative mathematical equation. Toward correcting all that, Bob continues broadcasting Will Duffy's recent debate Is Open Theism Biblical? as our friend is being cross examined by a newcomer to the issue.TOL Is dead - long live TOL! It's humbling to announce that TheologyOnline.com, which has always been a "sister site" to KGOV, has now been transferred to BEL by our dear friend Eric Guttormson. Bob first mentions the Babylon Bee satire site headline: "Conservative Slams Liberal Policies He'll Support Five Years From Now" and then from the Associated Press quotes Ohio's State Rep. Candice Keller (from Bob's wife's hometown of Middletown) saying that anti-abortionists there "are tired of taking an incremental approach to ending abortion" and that, "The time for regulating evil and compromise is over. The time has come to abolish abortion in its entirety and recognize that each individual has the inviolable and inalienable Right to Life." Thank you Rep. Keller! Now, the next step is to get her to realize the truth about the "life of the mother" exception, which she can learn at AmericanRTL.org/life. Then for most of today's program Bob airs the cross examination (with a couple "stop the tape" comments) from open theism proponent Will Duffy's recent debate. Of the tragic consequences of the Calvinist belief system, one of the worst is that non-open theists say that if God had a truly free "will" that He could not be trustworthy. We've noticed that Calvinism undermines a believer's relationship with the Lord into one that trusts the God's supposed inabilities rather than His active love and commitment to righteousness. Incredulously, our opponents always ask, "How can you possibly trust God if God is free?" Will Duffy's answer paraphrased Scripture. "God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." That is how we know that we can trust Him. Not because of any supposed attributes of impassibility, immutability, impecability (which are inabilities and the attributes of a stone idol) but we can trust Him because God has demonstrated His trustworthiness and faithfulness (which are not inabilities but positive attributes). Tune in tomorrow for more of this revealing debate! Today's Resource: Predestination & Free Will SeminarSo much is at stake when people consider predestination and free will.
* Hear Will Duffy's Opening Statement: from... * Duffy Debates/Introduces Open Theism to a Novice Calvinist: This event provides an insight that many other debates cannot. Have you ever wondered about the average Calvinist, that is, the non-theologian, who dutifully believes what he's been told about God and the Bible? Will Duffy's debate here provides insight into thousands or perhaps millions of Calvinist believers who themselves have minimal familiarity even with their own belief system and only have a distorted caricature, based on what they've been told, of the view that the future cannot be settled but most be open, because God is free and inexhaustibly creative. Of course, Duffy was respectful and gracious toward CJ Borns. * Only Trusting God's Inabilities; Can't Trust Him If He's Free: Something apparent in most of our debates was present in this one also. You can hear the non-open theist say that if God had a truly free and functioning "will" that He could not be trustworthy. We've noticed how this false doctrine undermines a believer's relationship with the Lord. Calvinists trust God's inabilities but not His abilities. They should be trusting His active love and commitment to righteousness. Yet they ask, incredulously, "How can you possibly trust God if God is free?" Will Duffy's answer paraphrased Scripture. "God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." That is how we know that we can trust Him. Not because of any supposed attributes of impassibility, immutability, impecability (which are inabilities and the attributes of a stone idol) but we can trust Him because God has demonstrated His trustworthiness and faithfulness, which are not inabilities but positive attributes. Bob Enyart learns more about Mormons talking again with yesterday's guest, Mark Cares, and Mark's associate, Matt Wilder, who is a son of our earlier guest, former Brigham Young University professor Lynn Wilder. What does the Bible say about the deity of Christ? For centuries, as affirmed at the Council of Nicea, Christians have used a wonderful list of verses to demonstrate from God's Word the deity of Jesus Christ. Here is another very different approach to show the same truth. (This is similar to the "Big Picture" approach used in the overview of the Bible called The Plot.) Thus Saith the Lord: If we count how many times the Old Testament prophets said, “Thus says the Lord” we find them using that phrase, in the New King James Version of the Bible, about 420 times. The New Testament on the other hand, never once records that phrase. Jesus Christ, with all the red ink devoted to recording His words, never once used that ubiquitous phrase, “Thus saith the Lord.” Rather, Jesus proclaims, “I say to you,” in the Gospels! Not a single “Thus says the Lord,” but rather, “I say to you,” 135 times. The following chart demonstrates biblically that these two phrases, Thus saith the Lord, and I say unto you, indicate the same thing, that God is speaking. For Jesus Christ made it clear that He Himself was at the heart of His teaching. Unlike the righteous priests and kings, prophets and the apostles, the Lord focused His message on Himself: Christ's Self-focus: “Follow Me” 19x Mt. 4:19; 8:22; 10:38; 16:24; 19:21; Mk. 1:17; 2:14; 8:34; 10:21; Lk. 5:27; 9:59; 18:22; Jn. 1:43; 8:12; 10:27; 12:26; 13:36; 21:19, 22 Pray and act “in My name” 18x Mt. 7:22; 18:5; 18:20; [24:5]; Mk. 9:37, 39, 41; [13:6]; Lk. 9:48; [21:8]; 24:47; Jn. 14:13?14; 15:16; 16:23?24, 26; Acts 9:15 “the Holy Spirit” comes “in My name” Jn. 14:26 “for My name's sake” leave family and property Mt. 19:29; or even be killed 5x Mt. 24:9; [Lk. 21:12, 17;] Jn. 15:21; Acts 9:16 Believe in the “name of the… Son” and “in the Son” 3x Jn. 3:18, 36; 9:35 and “in Him [Jesus]” 4x Jn. 3:18; 6:29, 40; 8:31 “believe in Me” 14x Mt. 18:6; Mk. 9:42; Jn. 3:15?16, 18; 6:35, 47; 7:38; 11:25, 26; 12:44, 46; 14:1, 12; 16:8; 17:20 You “are sanctified by faith in Me” Acts 26:18 Live “in Me” Jn. 11:26 “come after Me” Mk. 8:34; Lk. 14:27 Abide “in Me” Jn. 15:2, 4:5, 7 “abide in Me” or else Jn. 15:6 “abide in My love” Jn. 15:9?10 “where two or three are gathered,” Jesus is “there in the midst of them” Mt. 18:20 So too: “I [Jesus, will abide] in you” Jn. 15:4?5 “know that I am He” Jn. 8:28 or “if you do not believe that I am He you will die in your sins” Jn. 8:24 See the full article, The Deity of Christ: Another Approach, here at KGOV.com or you can consider listening to Bob Enyart teach through this important Bible study as the first lesson in our series on the Gospel of John titled, Is this Man God? * Today's Resource: Check out the format and perspective that's most helpful to your desire to evaluate these issues. Questions about whether the view that Jesus didn't know the time of his return because he limited his omniscience is the same as Open Theism, when Jesus became aware he was the Son of God, and whether Jesus wants to be “served.” Is the view that Jesus didn't know the time of his return because he limited his omniscience the same as Open Theism? How can God not know what he's chosen not to know? When did Jesus become aware he was the Son of God? You really believe Jesus wants to be “served”?
