    5. Best Museums in Dallas

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2020 5:42

Dallas has a wide variety of museums that every resident and visitor must take the opportunity to explore. #5 Nasher Sculpture Center The Nasher is just across the street from the Dallas Museum of Art, right in the middle of the Arts District in Dallas. Basically, Raymond and Patsy Nasher donated their personal collection to create this museum and happen to be one of the most stunning collections of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world. It contains over 300 masterworks by Picasso, Rodin, and dozens of other world-renowned artists. #4 Perot Museum of Nature and Science The first thing that you will probably notice about the Perot Museum is the eye-popping architecture. Designed by famed architect Thom Mayne, the building features a 54-foot, continuous-flow escalator contained in a glass-encased, tube-like structure. It's actually really cool to look at. The genesis of the museum is a merger of 3 museums in 2006: Dallas Museum of Natural History, The Science Place, and The Dallas Children's museum. In 2008, the 5 children of Ross Perot gave a $50 million gift to honor their parents, which allowed the ground to be broken on the current museum in late 2009. The museum as it stands today opened in December 2012. Inside, five floors house 11 permanent exhibits where visitors can go on an interactive adventure, study ancient animal bones, peruse gems and minerals, and play around in a 3D animation lab. What else can you do inside? You can experience a simulated earthquake, construct your "own" bird and then fly it using 3-D glasses, or feed terrarium animals. Needless to say, it covers a lot and will entertain adults and kids alike. #3 Dallas Holocaust & Human Rights Museum In 1984, a group of 125 local Holocaust survivors founded the Dallas Holocaust Museum. Ever since the museum's goal has been to educate visitors on the genocide and to promote human rights. There are three permanent exhibits—one focused on the Holocaust, another on human rights and the years following the Holocaust, and the last on how we deal with these issues in America today. Highlights include artifacts such as Nazi propaganda posters, and Holocaust survivors' suitcases and belongings. #2 The 6th-Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza This museum is located inside the former Texas School Book Depository building – the spot from where Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK (if you chose to believe that). The museum outlines the political climate of the 1960s and cumulates with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. #1 Dallas Museum of Art The Dallas Museum of Art is one of the country's largest art museums, housing more than 24,000 pieces of art that span continents, mediums, and centuries. The museum includes exhibits of African, American, Mediterranean, Asian, contemporary, and European art. The DMA is particularly strong in European art from the 19th and 20th centuries, and decorative arts and design. The temporary exhibits that visit the museum range from site-specific contemporary installations to curations from the museum's collection. 4. The Most Surprising Things About Dallas

There are some things that surprise everyone about Dallas. Visit our sponsor: Valet Maids Dallas (Your Dallas Maid Service) Use code SAVE30 for $30 off your first home cleaning at https://ValetMaids.com YouTube video: https://youtu.be/_uzrPe012Jg Blog post: https://valetmaids.com/the-most-surprising-things-about-dallas/ People from other parts of the country think that Dallas is full of cowboys, ranch hands, and oil men. Meanwhile, people from other parts of Texas think that Dallas is full of BMW driving trust fund bros. Although there may be some truth in all of those things, there are a lot of surprising things about Dallas. Here are the 5 most surprising things. #5 Walkability Dallas has several walkable neighborhoods including Uptown, Downtown, Deep Ellum, the Design District, Bishop Arts District, and Victory Park. According to Walkscore.com, downtown Dallas has a walk score of 91, and uptown Dallas has a walk score of 90. For comparison, New York City has an overall walk score of 88. So these neighborhoods are pretty great and Dallas has walkability that rivals that of other large cities. Practically speaking you should probably still have a car in Dallas, especially if you ever intend to leave your neighborhood, but if you live in the right neighborhood you can walk to everything you need including grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, and if you are lucky – your job, too. Plus with the DART continuing to expand service, you can get to even more places without the need for cars every day. #4 Greenspace Dallas has a lot of parks and other green spaces and trails such as Klyde Warren Park and the Katy Trail. According to the Dallas Parks & Rec department, the Dallas Park System is one of the largest municipal park systems in the country with 397 parks totaling over 20,000 acres of developed and undeveloped parkland. Of these parks, it includes over 160 miles of developed trails, 4 dog parks, and 7 lakes. One of the great things about the parks is that a lot of them have regular free or low-cost activities such as yoga, movies in the park, and various recreational sports leagues. If you can't find anything to do outside in Dallas, you obviously aren't trying very hard. #3 Diversity According to WalletHub.com, Dallas is the 5th most diverse city in the country. Dallas comes in behind Houston, Jersey City, New York City, and Gaithersburg, Maryland. That's not bad at all. The report took into account things such as industry diversity, income, age, religious affiliation, education, language, worker class, and marital status. #2 Distance from Fort Worth I blame the DFW airport name for this. It implies that Dallas and Fort Worth are next to each other. However, Dallas and Fort Worth are actually 32 miles apart from downtown to downtown. This may sound like a quick 30-minute trip, but add in the inevitable traffic on I-30 and that can easily turn into a trek that lasts over an hour. Just to be clear, Dallas and Fort Worth are two separate cities. Also, when someone says they are from Fort Worth, they don't mean Dallas, they mean Fort Worth. #1 How cold it gets Dallas basically has 2 seasons – summer and not summer. Everyone knows that it gets really hot in Dallas. However, it can get really cold too. January is the coldest month with an average low temperature of 37 degrees. But Dallas can get as cold as the teens and twenties during the winter, and that is absolutely no fun. The lowest temperature on record is negative 8 degrees Fahrenheit, but that is rare. Just know that when it comes to Dallas, you have to be prepared for the very very hot and the very very cold.

    3. 5 Biggest Companies in Dallas

Dallas has more Fortune 500 companies than many people realize. Check out this video for the biggest companies in Dallas. Visit our sponsor: Valet Maids Dallas Use code SAVE30 for $30 off your first home cleaning at https://ValetMaids.com YouTube: https://youtu.be/0pakrZ_t49M Blog post: https://valetmaids.com/5-biggest-companies-in-dallas/ Sources: fortune.com For some reason everyone thinks that big companies are all based in New York or Silicon Valley, but Dallas has a lot more corporate headquarters than many people realize. I pulled the 2020 Fortune 500 list to see what are the biggest companies headquartered in Dallas. I count more than just Dallas proper since most people are willing to commute around the metroplex. 5. American Airlines Group (Fort Worth, TX) Headquartered in Fort Worth, American Airlines was number 70 on the overall Fortune 500 list in 2020. This is a 2 spot slip from 2019's ranking and moves American behind Delta as the leading airline. 2019 was an uneven year for American marked by labor disputes and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. 4. Energy Transfer Energy Transfer is number 59 on the overall 2020 Fortune 500 list. The company was formed in 1996 and became publicly traded in 2004. According to their website, their core operations include transportation, storage, and terminating for natural gas, crude oil, NGLs, refined products, and liquid natural gas. So, to put it simply, it's an oil & gas company. 3. AT&T AT&T is number 9 on the overall Fortune 500 list. American Telephone & Telegraph is not just the telephone company, but a media conglomerate who brought us the confusing rollout of HBOMax this year. But hey, we got another streaming service to pay for to get to watch things that used to be available on Netflix, so there's that. 2. McKesson (Irving, TX) Just one spot above AT&T on the overall list is McKesson, coming in at #8. The company is the nation's largest drug distributor and grew revenue last year through more sales, increased prices, and acquisitions. You know, the usual. They did see some losses last year with costs related to opioid-related litigation. McKesson, along with many other drug dealers (I mean manufacturers) are fighting thousands of lawsuits over their alleged role in the nation's opioid epidemic. In February 2020, 21 states rejected a proposed $18 billion settlement with McKesson and the U.S.'s two other largest drug wholesalers. At least with the other events of 2020, no one is talking about the opioid crisis anymore. 1. ExxonMobil (Irving, TX) ExxonMobil, based in Irving, is America's largest publicly traded oil company. This #3 company on the overall Fortune list faced a challenging 2019. CEO Darren Woods pinned the problem squarely on low oil prices. The company earned $14.3 billion (which is

    1. 5 Reasons to Move to Dallas

More than 300 people move to Dallas every day. Find out the top 5 reasons why people are moving to Dallas. Remember to check out our sponsor Valet Maids Dallas. Use code SAVE30 for $30 off your first home cleaning at https://Valet Maids.com. YouTube: https://youtu.be/JaXnY_9DtfQ Blog post: https://valetmaids.com/5-reasons-to-move-to-dallas/ According to the Dallas Morning News, approximately 300 people move to Dallas every day. So why is everyone moving to Dallas? That's a lot of people, but it makes sense. Dallas has a lot to offer. Here are a few of the reasons why so many people are moving to Dallas. 1. Jobs Let's be honest, most people live somewhere because of job opportunities and Dallas has plenty of them. Toyota, McKesson, and the PGA are just a few of the companies that have relocated their corporate headquarters to the Dallas metro area and brought all of those jobs with them. Not only are there many companies, but the companies are also in a variety of industries. Unlike other cities that seem to primarily only have jobs in certain fields such as oil & gas or tech, Dallas has a variety of jobs in a variety of industries. 2. No State Income Tax One great thing about living in Texas is that there is no income tax. Now, you make up for it in property tax, but that's beside the point. No income tax actually lets you keep more of your income and makes living in Dallas more affordable. Seriously, who likes paying taxes? 3. Cost of Living That brings us to the overall lower cost of living. Now, Dallas has gotten significantly more expensive over the years but it is still less than other major US cities. Currently, housing cost in Dallas is about 93% of the median housing cost in the US. That's not bad. The average home in Dallas is $214K, compared to $231K for the overall US. Transportation will cost you a bit more than other cities due to the increasing sprawl and of course, the lower-cost housing is further from the city center. The DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) is constantly expanding and getting better. Not interested in buying a house right now? Dallas still has affordable rent. According to Rent Café, the average 850 square foot apartment will cost you $1,250. This compares to $1,439 in Austin, $1,702 in Miami or $4,200 in Manhattan. 4. Sports If you like professional sports, then Dallas is the place to be. Between the Mavericks for basketball, the Stars for hockey, the Cowboys for football, and FC Dallas for soccer, Dallas has pretty much everything you could want. If you are more into college sports, in addition to having SMU and TCU in the metroplex, you will not have a shortage of finding a sports bar to watch teams from UT, Texas A&M, and OU. Dallas is also close to the Texas Motor Speedway if you are into that sort of thing. 5. Restaurants If you consider yourself a foodie or just like to eat, Dallas is the city for you. Dallas actually has more restaurants per capita than New York City. Now, part of what inflates that number is being home to the culinary empire Brinker which brings us fine dining options like Chili's and On the Border. However, Dallas is more than just chain restaurants. Dallas has a variety of cuisines including some pretty amazing Tex-Mex. No matter what type of food you like, you are sure to find several options in Dallas.
