Jillian Johnsrud, the podcaster behind "Retire Often," and the author of a new book out this week that goes by the same title, says that a lot of people mess up their retirement lifestyle by not preparing for it with smaller retirements — lasting a month or more — during their prime working years. Not only do these smaller times allow people to recharge and rejuvenate, they become dry runs for the real thing, allowing pre-retirees to sample ideas and then plan how to execute the best concepts. Johnsrud — who says she has retired at least a dozen times despite only being in her early 40s — says that small retirements are achievable, even by workaholics (like this show's host) with some foresight and planning. Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services — longtime publisher of The DRIP Investor newsletter — returns to the show to help Chuck answer a listener's question about how to deal with an inherited portfolio of stocks all held in dividend reinvestment programs. Chip Lupo discusses the 2025 Money and Relationships Survey from WalletHub, which showed that nearly one in three people think their relationship is limiting their financial growth, with communication (or a lack thereof) being at the heart of the problem. And Chuck starts his interviews from FinCon '25 in Portland, Ore., by chatting with Doug Nordman of MilitaryFinancialIndependence.com, who says that while current events have some military members reconsidering their work choices, that action is appropriate and happens in all times, but it doesn't mean that military families will be abandoning their financial plans even if they change careers before achieving military status that could set them up for life.

The financial shock of adding a teenage driver to your insurance policy can feel like a sucker punch to your wallet. In Texas, parents face an average premium increase of 114% – the fourth highest in the nation according to WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo, our special guest this week. While Texas ranks middle-of-the-pack (28th) for teen driver fatalities, this statistic offers little comfort to parents navigating the treacherous waters of teen driving safety and skyrocketing insurance costs.Diving into strategies that actually work, our hosts share personal experiences with driver education approaches across generations. We explore the evolving landscape from school-based programs taught by PE coaches to modern combinations of parent-led instruction and professional driving schools. The conversation reveals an important truth: teens often respond better to driving instruction from authority figures who aren't their parents. Meanwhile, insurance companies offer various paths to lower those painful premiums, including good student discounts and monitoring devices that track driving habits.Beyond teen driving concerns, we cover breaking automotive news including a massive immigration enforcement operation at a Hyundai-LG plant in Georgia, the first-ever Vehicle Quality and Pricing Index showing Buick, Mazda and Toyota leading mainstream brands in reliability and affordability, and a shocking dealership embezzlement case in Midland where the former GM allegedly stole up to $150,000 through various fraudulent activities. Jeff rounds out the episode with a packed calendar of upcoming car shows and events across Texas. Whether you're raising a teen driver or simply passionate about automotive culture, this episode delivers valuable insights and entertaining discussion about the challenges facing today's drivers.Join us live every Saturday morning 8-11am Central on Facebook, YouTube, Twitch and InWheelTime.com, or catch our podcasts on all major platforms.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The Black Lincoln Collective Comedy Podcast: Episode #116 on PopCulturePros (or #201 overall, which means we've now made more episodes than sensible life choices)Title: Kratom Shots of the Bermuda TriangleThis week, the BLC crew mixes workplace chaos, sketchy wellness trends, and nautical nonsense into one barely drinkable cocktail. First up, Fred and Allan share new job horror stories—because nothing says “team bonding” like HR sending strongly worded emails. From there, we take a hard left into the world of kratom shots and other “feel good” concoctions that sound more like dares than health products. Spoiler: it's less about wellness and more about wondering if your intestines will ever forgive you. Then it's time to argue about WalletHub's latest list of best and worst states—because nothing screams “objective data” like three guys with no maps yelling about Delaware. And finally, we tackle the Bermuda Triangle, busting myths and raising new questions like: was it aliens, bad weather, or just really bad navigation?Episode #116 is unhinged, unfiltered, and just a little bit unhealthy—so grab a kratom shot (or, you know, water), and join us in the chaos.
We're #1 - for the worst state in the nation for women's equality! That’s according to WalletHub's latest ranking. That's 10 years in a row now. Live analysis on these results from the Utah Women & Leadership Project, after the break.
(The Center Square) – A new WalletHub report ranked Washington as the 36th best state to live in this year, with Idaho landing second overall due to affordability and law enforcement staffing per capita. Much of the West Coast fell below the bottom half of the charts, with California at 32nd and Oregon at 39th on the list. WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo told The Center Square that rapid growth in Seattle and other cities a few decades ago outpaced the development of infrastructure, creating several issues. The lack of infrastructure, paired with booming population growth, makes it challenging to manage crime, affordability and the availability of services. Washington boasts a strong economy, but the state also faces a ballooning budget and the lowest number of law enforcement officers per capita nationwide.
Gordon Byrd speaks with Chip Lupo of personal finance website Wallethub about two surveys of special interest to Florida. One finds Tampa Bay and South Florida among the top ten markets for inflation, while the Best States To Live In report ranks Florida 6th, still top tier but down from 2nd.

Darrell Cronk, chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management, says he expects both the stock market and the economy to face a "soft patch" that will increase volatility and mute returns for the rest of the year, but he believes conditions are strong enough that there will be no recession and that those year-end doldrums will lead to improvement and gains in 2026. Rob Williams, chief investment strategist at Sage Advisory Services, says the economy and market have moved off of potential worst-case scenarios into "this manageable camp," where it must get through potholes and uncertainty as the economy "flirts with stall speed" in growth. Still, Williams sees some powerful tailwinds that could drive the market higher in the second half of the year, but the concerns make it that investors should remember that "yield is your friend." "Be fully invested in equities," Williams says, "but don't be stealing from fixed income yet to overload on the equity side. You will want that yield if things get bumpy." Bob Rosen, author of "Detach: Ditch Your Baggage to Live a More Fulfilling Life" discusses how to break away from uncertainty — which he says is a constant in life, and not just present in times like today — to be happy and productive even when conditions make that hard. Plus Chip Lupo discusses a WalletHub survey showing that the tariff uncertainty has made consumers — anticipating price hikes — more interested in earning credit card rewards, and which bonuses consumers find particularly attractive now.
