The warm week continues for North Texas as the heat settles in. Today's high for the metro area will be 94. According to the National Weather Service's Fort Worth office, the humidity will make it feel more like 103. Add to that, a few wispy clouds will offer little in the way of cover or relief. The overnight low will be 77. Todays headlines include: Vance Boelter, the man suspected of fatally shooting a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband Saturday, attended Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas in the late 1980s; a new Dallas City Council began its term Monday amid calls by Mayor Eric Johnson to focus the city government's priorities on infrastructure improvements, funding public safety and moving past the political theater that has engulfed local politics; Gov. Greg Abbott signed a package of bills Monday that aims to slash property taxes for Texas homeowners. Surrounded by state legislators, local officials and residents of Robson Ranch, a luxury senior community in Denton County, Abbott called the Texas property tax cuts unprecedented in the U.S. The bills approve two constitutional amendments, which voters must still approve in November. One would raise the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000; the other would raise the exemption to $200,000 for state residents with disabilities or those who are 65 and older. Abbott said, more than half of seniors would pay no property taxes at all; and the Knox District development at the corner of Knox and Travis streets in Dallas has announced its first of several restaurants. Italian cafe Sant Ambroeus will serve Milanese food in an indoor-outdoor setting overlooking Dallas' Katy Trail. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

If you follow the winding road of Highway 94, you'll find yourself in Missouri wine country. Augusta is home to local wineries, the Katy Trail, and now a much talked about farm-to-table restaurant. Phillip Day opened Root Food + Wine in 2021. The menu changes monthly depending on the season, the local produce and when inspiration strikes. We sat down with Phillip in the century-old home-turned-restaurant to discuss creating a destination spot. He shares his path to owning his own place and the reality that it often means wearing all hats, including plumber and landscaper. Root Food + Wine is only open certain days a week, check their website for the latest menu and hours. rootfoodwine.com
On the show today it is just me and I am going to give you a recap of my recent trip to Missouri where I rode the entire Katy Trail, west to east. I would highly recommend checking out this trail if you haven't yet. The Katy Trail is in the Rail Trail Hall of Fame and you can learn more about it at bikekatytrail.com. It spans about 240 miles across most of Missouri. About half the trail follows the Lewis and Clark path along the Missouri River. It is a rustic limestone trail, formerly the MKT rail line, and remnants still remain, like the old communication poles. I spent a week riding the Katy Trail and wanted to share my experience with you. www.bikekatytrail.com www.murphologypodcast.com https://linktr.ee/Murphology www.Patreon.com/Murphology A few great deals to send your way: www.hammerhead.io Use code Murphology to get a free heart rate monitor with your Karoo 2. www.lilytrotters.com Use code MURPHOLOGY to get 20% off your purchase of thee best compression socks! www.primalwear.com Use code PRIMALMURPH for 20% off your Primal cycling gear. On this episode meet Kim who recently completed an epic solo bikepacking adventure by completing the Katy Trail on her bike after being inspired by a female colleague who did the same adventure while back. At nearly 240 miles long, the crushed limestone Katy Trail spans nearly the full width of Missouri and is the country's longest continuous rail-trail, intersecting with rural farmland, scenic small towns, and centers of commerce and government on its route paralleling the Missouri River. And if you listened to episode 89 with Kevin Belanger from the Rails to Trail Conservancy, we talked a bit about the Rail Trail Hall of Fame. Back in 2007 the Katy Trail became the second member in the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. Kim, who is a well versed solo female traveller, took a little over 5 days to pedal from Clinton, Missouri to Machens, Missouri, staying in hotels and bnbs along with way while carrying everything she needed in her waterproof and dustproof Ortlieb bike panniers. www.murphologypodcast.com www.Patreon.com/Murphology

When you walk inside Bike Stop Café off historic Main Street in St. Charles, you're met with two distinct businesses – a café serving up healthy and fresh foods and a bike shop with gear to buy and to rent so you can hop right on the Katy Trail out the back door. That was always the goal for Jodi Devonshire and her husband Tony when they open more than a decade ago. It combines their two passions – mountain biking and cooking. Their café greets people at the beginning or the end of the 237-mile trail that stretches from one end of Missouri to the next. Jodi sat down with us inside their business to talk about their new bakery that just opened in Frenchtown, the desire to make biking accessible for everyone, and her passion for building a menu filled with things that will fill your stomach and your soul. The Katy Trail State Park is the longest developed rail-trail in the country, spanning 240 miles between Clinton and Machens with 26 trailheads and four fully restored railroad depots along the way. Whether you are a bicyclist, walker, equestrian, nature lover or history buff, the trail offers opportunities for recreation, a place to enjoy nature and an avenue to discover the past. After spending nearly her whole adult life around the Katy Trail, Kim Henderson saw an opportunity to bring more tourism to the small trail town of Windsor by building a cabin rental business. Kim is the owner and operator of Kim's Cabins. Located right on the Katy Trail, her business offers a tranquil escape with several recreational options for visitors. Before owning her own business, Kim spent several years at First Community Bank, now Equity Bank. She also served as the City Administrator of the City of Windsor until 2018 when she took her rental business full time. Kim gets to experience farm life on a daily basis and has gained quite the social media following by sharing photos of the nature and wildlife on her land. Katy Trail State Park attracts people of all ages and interests. Tune in to hear how Kim's Cabins put Windsor on the map as a must-stay destination for those making the state-wide trek on the trail or those just looking for a weekend getaway. What you'll learn: Kim's background growing up in St. Charles, Missouri, moving to Wyoming to work in hospitality and then eventually settling in Windsor, Missouri The inspiration behind Kim's Cabins and the need it fills for those traveling through Missouri, especially by trail How people can get ahold of Kim, book her cabin and follow her on social media What it takes to run a rental business and how important it is for small business owners to make personal connections The ways people find and review Kim's business online through Google, community sites and social media Why more and more people are leaving cities for smaller communities and what trail towns have to offer those who are wanting to “getaway” What rural America means to Kim and the impact of Midwest hospitality she sees amongst trail people

So here is Kim to talk about her Katy Trail bike adventure. www.murphologypodcast.com www.Patreon.com/Murphology

After sitting with it a few weeks since my return from bicycling the Katy Trail, I shared my thoughts on everything about the ride… the heat, the rain, the trail surface, and much more. Where does the Katy Trail stand up to other tour routes in the US? I have some thoughts on that! Originally podcast June 28, 2018.

And it's the Saturday edition of Finding the Funny, which means I'll be giving you a tip to find the funny yourself! I've written for everyone from the Tonight Show monologue with Jay Leno to realtors and even wart removal cream companies. I now travel the country showing organizations how to use humor in business. So here's your 60 second tip! If you want to grab people's attention and use some humor, then make a counter intuitive statement. Counterintuitive means counter to what we think it should be. I used to have a joke that Diet Coke makes you gain weight. . .because everyone drinking it is fat. I made a statement that is opposite to what we think, Diet Coke makes you fat, and then I proved it by making the point – because everyone drinking it is overweight. It's a mean joke. I don't use it any more. If you want to grab attention and get people to come to a meeting for example, then say something like "Attending our meetings will make you skinny" or "attending our meetings will get you dates." Then list the funny reasons why this is true. I did a show for the Missouri tourism board, and I used the example that Visiting Missouri will make you skinny. And then backed it up with things like: We have 89 golf courses that you can walk. We have wild animals that will chase you. We have the 240 mile Katy Trail to jog on. I just proved my counter-intuitive statement. So grab people's attention and use some humor by making a counter intuitive statement and then backing it up. Listen to my joke about Smokers tomorrow – where I talk about the benefits of smoking by starting off with a statement that makes you think WHAT? And then I back it up. If you want more fast tips on coming up with humor in your communications, then check out my book on Amazon – Finding the Funny Fast. That's it for today. Take care and enjoy your journey.
If you listened to episode 126, you would have heard that Robert and I were going to check off our bucket lists bicycling across the state of Missouri on the Katy Trail. The Katy is the longest of all the rails to trails paths in the U.S. with approximately 237 miles of continuous trail. We made it! The adventure was truly a test of our endurance. Our adventure had its fair share of obstacles, but we didn't let that dampen our spirits. Now that we've finished our journey, other life obstacles don't seem so bad. Listen as I share three lessons I learned from cycling 308 miles on Missouri trails. You must unplug in order to recharge. You don't need fancy, expensive equipment to do BIG things. Bike fun not fast. What has been on your bucket list that you finally took the plunge to accomplish? Big or small...I'd love to hear from you. Hop over to Instagram and leave a private message. There are some things that surprise everyone about Dallas. Visit our sponsor: Valet Maids Dallas (Your Dallas Maid Service) Use code SAVE30 for $30 off your first home cleaning at https://ValetMaids.com YouTube video: https://youtu.be/_uzrPe012Jg Blog post: https://valetmaids.com/the-most-surprising-things-about-dallas/ People from other parts of the country think that Dallas is full of cowboys, ranch hands, and oil men. Meanwhile, people from other parts of Texas think that Dallas is full of BMW driving trust fund bros. Although there may be some truth in all of those things, there are a lot of surprising things about Dallas. Here are the 5 most surprising things. #5 Walkability Dallas has several walkable neighborhoods including Uptown, Downtown, Deep Ellum, the Design District, Bishop Arts District, and Victory Park. According to Walkscore.com, downtown Dallas has a walk score of 91, and uptown Dallas has a walk score of 90. For comparison, New York City has an overall walk score of 88. So these neighborhoods are pretty great and Dallas has walkability that rivals that of other large cities. Practically speaking you should probably still have a car in Dallas, especially if you ever intend to leave your neighborhood, but if you live in the right neighborhood you can walk to everything you need including grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, and if you are lucky – your job, too. Plus with the DART continuing to expand service, you can get to even more places without the need for cars every day. #4 Greenspace Dallas has a lot of parks and other green spaces and trails such as Klyde Warren Park and the Katy Trail. According to the Dallas Parks & Rec department, the Dallas Park System is one of the largest municipal park systems in the country with 397 parks totaling over 20,000 acres of developed and undeveloped parkland. Of these parks, it includes over 160 miles of developed trails, 4 dog parks, and 7 lakes. One of the great things about the parks is that a lot of them have regular free or low-cost activities such as yoga, movies in the park, and various recreational sports leagues. If you can't find anything to do outside in Dallas, you obviously aren't trying very hard. #3 Diversity According to WalletHub.com, Dallas is the 5th most diverse city in the country. Dallas comes in behind Houston, Jersey City, New York City, and Gaithersburg, Maryland. That's not bad at all. The report took into account things such as industry diversity, income, age, religious affiliation, education, language, worker class, and marital status. #2 Distance from Fort Worth I blame the DFW airport name for this. It implies that Dallas and Fort Worth are next to each other. However, Dallas and Fort Worth are actually 32 miles apart from downtown to downtown. This may sound like a quick 30-minute trip, but add in the inevitable traffic on I-30 and that can easily turn into a trek that lasts over an hour. Just to be clear, Dallas and Fort Worth are two separate cities. Also, when someone says they are from Fort Worth, they don't mean Dallas, they mean Fort Worth. #1 How cold it gets Dallas basically has 2 seasons – summer and not summer. Everyone knows that it gets really hot in Dallas. However, it can get really cold too. January is the coldest month with an average low temperature of 37 degrees. But Dallas can get as cold as the teens and twenties during the winter, and that is absolutely no fun. The lowest temperature on record is negative 8 degrees Fahrenheit, but that is rare. Just know that when it comes to Dallas, you have to be prepared for the very very hot and the very very cold.

It's an amazing conversation with amazing women I'm thrilled to introduce you to! Meet the panelists Donna, Claudia and Chris! Donna is the co-founder of Gardenuity: a company that ships container gardens right to your door. They take the stress and hustle out of growing your own food. Whether you are looking for a kitchen herb garden, peppers, tomatoes, carrots or a variety of seasonal herbs and vegetables, Gardenuity will make growing them to harvest super simple. They have a cocktail herb garden which Billy and I have had for a couple of years that would be a fun purchase if you get inspired after this episode! You can mention the code "Spring2020" will save $10 off of any order at Gardenuity.com - this will be valid until the end of June 2020. Claudia is the cofounder of Katy Trail Vodka which is crafted by Silver Nickel Distillery, one of the first distilleries in the city of Dallas, TX since prohibition. All of their products are crafted, distilled and bottled in Dallas and are gluten free. They also use no artificial coloring or flavoring in their product which is a topic of our discussion on the panel.

Welcome Eric Johnson the owner of Fleet Feet Springfield, a specialty running store in Springfield Missouri. We learn a little about Eric, and a ton about the day to day operation of a running store. In the Gear Review Andy discusses the Inov-8 RoadClaw 275, Stephen compares the Inov-8 Trail Talon 275 to the Niki Tera Kiger 3, he is foaming at the mouth to get a hold of the Inov-8 Rocklite 305 when they are released. and Eric reviews the Hoka Challenger ATR 2 that he bought right before the Pikes Peak Marathon. Today I will be talking to Sherry Payne. She will be walking across the state of Missouri along the Katy Trail to bring attention to the invisible epidemic of African-American infant mortality- babies dying prior to their first birthday. Here in the US, Black babies die at twice the rate of their Caucasian counterparts. The reason for this is very complex but we must increase awareness of the problem to increase our efforts at solutions. She will be walking for 12 days across our state (200 miles along the Katy Trail from Kansas City to St. Louis) and talking to lots of groups and organizations as I cross the state.
Especially for the arrival of the autumn equinox, alias fall, we bring you “Moonlight Over Cassia Peak” a nature myth from China explaining the abundance of cassia trees around Lingyin Temple in the Wulin Mountains. The version we have borrowed presents the legend as a tale within a tale. We come to you from Fall River, MA, where we gear up for another haunting season in Salem. We've completed our 21st summer season, which took us from Monterey, CA to Medford, MA. Along the way, we performed for the American Library Association's annual conference on behalf of Scholastic Books (held in Chicago this year) and biked the Katy Trail in Missouri. And Dennis began writing about some of our travel adventures for examiner.com. Oh yes, and we have a guest star this time who's hardly a stranger to our podcasts or our shows: our son Zephyr, who now lives in Massachusetts and hadn't done a podcast with us since January. Happy Listening! Dennis (De Wing), Kimberly (Narrator, Queen) and Zephyr (Abbot, Wu Gang)
