Luke 6:27–28 (ESV) “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall talks about the difference between the struggles of youth and the deeper challenges of the heart. Many people think overcoming outward sins is the hardest part of following Christ. Yet as we grow in our walk with God, we discover that some of the greatest challenges involve how we treat people. Jesus said that those who are willing to listen must learn to love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, bless those who curse them, and pray for those who hurt them. These commands go far beyond normal human reactions. Instead of returning anger for anger, believers are called to respond with kindness, generosity, and prayer. Pastor Sumrall explains that Jesus even taught His followers to give generously, not seek revenge, and treat others the way they would want to be treated. Loving only those who love us is easy, but acting with grace toward those who oppose us reflects the character of our heavenly Father. Luke 6:9–10 (ESV) “And Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?' And after looking around at them all he said to him, ‘Stretch out your hand.' And he did so, and his hand was restored.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall speaks to leaders about a moment everyone in leadership will eventually face: confronting what is wrong. In Luke 6, the Pharisees watched Jesus closely, not to learn from Him but to find something they could accuse Him of. They were looking for a reason to criticize if He healed on the Sabbath. Jesus did not avoid the situation. He brought the man with the withered hand forward where everyone could see, taught the truth of Scripture, and then asked a direct question: is the Sabbath a day to do good or to do harm? After facing His critics, He commanded the man to stretch out his hand, and it was restored. Pastor Sumrall reminds leaders that there are times when doing what is right must be done openly. Some people watch leaders only to criticize, but that should never intimidate us into silence or compromise. Jesus showed that truth should be spoken clearly and that right actions should not be hidden. Luke 5:20, 24 (ESV) - “And when he saw their faith, he said, ‘Man, your sins are forgiven you.' … ‘But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins'—he said to the man who was paralyzed—‘I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.'” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reflects on the story of the paralyzed man in Luke 5 and the faith of the friends who brought him to Jesus. Scripture says the power of the Lord was present for Jesus to heal, yet the crowd filled the house so completely that no one else could get near Him. Instead of rushing to get a good seat, these men went the opposite direction. They found their paralyzed friend, carried him to Jesus, and when they could not enter through the door, they opened the roof and lowered him down in front of the Lord. Seeing their faith, Jesus forgave the man's sins and then healed him, demonstrating His authority. Pastor Sumrall reminds believers that the focus should never be on watching miracles but on bringing people who need Jesus. Luke 5:14 (ESV) - “And he charged him to tell no one, but ‘go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.'” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reflects on the healing of the leper in Luke 5 and the importance of simple obedience to Jesus. After healing the man, Jesus gave him a clear instruction: do not tell others yet, but go to the priest and present the offering required by the Law of Moses as a testimony. Instead of following that instruction, the man spread the news everywhere. While his intentions may have been good, he still disobeyed what Jesus asked him to do. Pastor Sumrall points out that obedience matters, even when we think our own ideas seem helpful. Jesus had a purpose in sending the man to the priests. A healed leper appearing in the temple would have been a clear testimony to the religious leaders about what God was doing. When we ignore God's instructions, even with good intentions, we can miss the greater purpose He has planned. Luke 4:33–35 (ESV) - “And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.' But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent and come out of him!' And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reminds us that the world includes both a natural realm and a spiritual realm. The Bible shows that demons are real, but Jesus never became obsessed with them. Instead, He stayed focused on ministry, teaching the Word of God and helping people. In Luke 4, Jesus was simply teaching in the synagogue when a demon cried out. His ministry itself interfered with demonic activity. Jesus did not hold a conversation with the demon. He simply rebuked it and commanded it to come out. Pastor Sumrall explains that much of what people call spiritual warfare is simply faithful ministry. When believers preach the Word, teach Scripture, pray for the sick, and help others, they are already interfering with the work of the enemy. This Daily Devotion encourages believers to keep their focus on Jesus and the work of ministry. Luke 4:1–2, 13 (ESV) - “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry… And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reminds us that temptation is a real pressure that comes from the outside trying to push its way into our lives. Jesus Himself experienced this pressure when He was tempted by the devil in the wilderness for forty days. As the second Adam, Jesus faced temptation directly and stood firm. Pastor Sumrall explains that temptation often comes in seasons. At times the pressure can feel very strong, but there also comes a moment when that pressure lifts and the temptation passes. However, Scripture shows that the enemy departs only until another opportunity arises. Temptation can return at a later time, often when a person is at a weaker moment. This Daily Devotion encourages believers to remember that Jesus understands the pressure of temptation and has shown us that it is possible to stand firm. Luke 3:8 (NLT) - “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall show us this passage showing how John the Baptist taught a powerful truth about repentance. Many people understand remorse, but far fewer understand true repentance. Remorse means feeling sorry for what you have done, but it does not necessarily lead to change. Judas felt remorse after betraying Jesus, but he never truly repented. True repentance goes beyond feeling sorry. It means a genuine desire to change. John the Baptist told the crowds that if they had truly repented, they should prove it by the way they lived. He gave practical examples. If someone had two shirts, they should share with someone who had none. If they had food, they should share with the hungry. Tax collectors were told to stop collecting more than required, ending their corruption. Soldiers were instructed not to misuse their authority through extortion or false accusations. In each case, repentance was demonstrated through changed behavior. Mark 11:27–33 (NLT) After Jesus cleansed the temple, the religious leaders confronted Him and demanded, “By what authority are You doing these things?” Jesus responded with a question of His own about John the Baptist's authority. They refused to answer honestly because they feared the people and wanted to protect themselves. When they said, “We don't know,” Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things.” Jesus did not submit Himself to dishonest accountability. These leaders were corrupt. They had turned the temple into a place of exploitation, yet they wanted to challenge Jesus and demand explanations from Him. Jesus exposed their dishonesty first. When they refused to be truthful, He refused to answer. This teaches us an important lesson for life. Accountability is good, but only when it comes from honest people. Do not allow corrupt or dishonest people to sit in judgment over you. Let people of integrity hold you accountable, people who are willing to answer hard questions themselves.
