Welcome to the Haven Homestead Podcast where we learn and grow together on our way to living a more sustainable life.
Homeschool is hard any day of the week, but during this quarantine it’s even more difficult. I heard someone even call it crisis schooling, instead of homeschooling. I’ve gathered 6 tips and tricks from her own experience, and from other veteran homeschoolers that should help make things just a little smoother. 1: Remain calm and be patient (With yourself, your kids, your kids teachers, etc.)2: Set boundaries and establish a routine.3: Be Flexible.4: Everyone needs their space; give it to them!5: Incorporate things from your old normal into your new normal.6: Treat your family with love and respect, and find ways to get everyone involved in meaningful ways.In this episode I give specific guidance on boundary setting and establishing a behavior rewards system, how to know when to toss “school” out the window, and how to get everyone involved in meaningful ways. If you have more questions, or have ideas you could share, please contact us at www.havenhomestead.comPlease consider becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/havenhomestead

Setting goals is a very important part of living a sustainable life. On a homestead there is a lot to be done all the time. It can get very overwhelming if you don't break it down into smaller pieces. Setting clear and well defined goals is the only way to realize your dreams and ambitions. In this episode we talk about the S.M.A.R.T. way to set goals and how to break down those "30,000ft" goals.Get your Anywhere, Anytime garden in a box at www.happyleafled.comPlease visit us at www.havenhomestead.com and support us at www.patreon.com/havenhomesteadThanks for Listening!!

Christmas is a time for family, so in this episode I interview my mom. She got me started on this path of gardening, animal raising, and making things for myself (but my dad taught me the value of fixing things yourself so you don't have to pay someone else to do it, but that's a topic for a different day). In today's episode we talk about things like saving money by mulching your garden with leaves, grass, wood chips, animal manure, and garden waste. We also talk about how to find cheap tools. The last topic we discuss is how our strawbale gardens did compared to the lasagna style garden.Find out more about us at www.havenhomestead.comShow our sponsers some love by going to www.happyleafled.com and getting your anytime, anywhere, garden in a box for only $65 but save 10% when you use the promocode FRIEND at checkout. In today's episode we answer a listener's question about how to grow a balanced diet on your homestead. You can grow almost everything you need for a balanced diet, if you've got the space. I talk about raising meat rabbits, chickens for meat and eggs, growing your own fruits, vegetables, grains and root crops, and more. You can also grow things to help balance your diet no matter how small your space is. The HappyLeafLED kit lets you grow a salad all year long if you've got a small table and a electrical outlet, and quail can live in a really small place. You don't have to do it all at once, but you can get started with one thing today. The sense of accomplishment and overall wellness that you will achieve by growing a balanced diet can really take you places. This episode was brought to you by Happy Leaf LED. I love the book "Gaia's Garden", by Toby Hemenway, and I'm not afraid to say it. This book is jam-packed with useful information on sustainable gardening methods and permaculture principles. I have turned to this book time and time again for needed information here on the homestead and in my business of edible landscape design. In this episode I cover some of the few things I have found most useful. I strongly suggest getting this book to assist you on your way to living a more sustainable life.If you like growing things, then go to www.happyleafled.com and get all the stuff you need to get started on your very own hydroponics system. Please come visit us at www.havenhomestead.com to find out what we are up to here on the homestead.Become a true "Havenite" at www.patreon.com/havenhomesteadand last but not least show some support to Lindsay's kickstarter at www.kickstarter.com/projects/968829671/a-christmas-angel-the-board-book?ref=discoveryThanks for listening!
