We both find weather satellites fascinating and so really enjoyed recording this episode of the podcast. We were incredibly lucky to be able to talk to Graeme Mason and Thorsten Fehr from the European Space Agency in this episode. Graeme is the Meteorological Programmes Manager at the European Space Agency and is responsible for the implementation of a number of satellite missions including the Meteosat Third Generation and the Arctic Weather Satellite, which we speak to him about in this episode. Thorsten is the Mission Scientist for the Earth Explorer Programme mission EarthCARE, which stands for Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer, and is the European Space Agency's clouds and aerosol mission. In this episode we learn all about the new Arctic Weather satellite, which is due to be launched in the middle of August 2024 and is actually going to be launched alongside 99 other satellites. We also learn about EarthCARE, which was launched at the end of May 2024. In this episode we cover lots about satellites in general, including how they range in size from a fridge to the size of a bus; as well as how long it takes to develop these satellites before they even get launched. If you have any questions about weather satellites after listening to this episode, then definitely reach out to Graeme and Thorsten on LinkedIn. You can also find out about these satellite missions as well as many more on the European Space Agency's website https://www.esa.int/ You can follow us on Instagram @fortheloveofweather and on X @4loveofweather. We really hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast and leave loving the weather a little bit more.

Juni an. In this podcast we speak often of the particular concerns of younger generations—including Gen X, Millennials and Gen Alpha. We try to pay attention to voices representing these generations, knowing that they are the ones who will ultimately suffer more as the climate changes—bringing increasing environmental and social disruption in the coming years. In this, the first of two episodes, Forrest speaks with Wes Willison—a guy in his early 30s who has given a lot of thought to the particular struggles that he shares in common with many other Millennials. AI is already being used in every branch of science, and will become more and more a feature of future breakthroughs. But with its power to find subtle patterns in massive data sets comes a concern about how we will know when to trust its outcomes, and how to rely on its predictions. Science in Action talks to Alison Noble who just completed a Royal Society report on trust in scientific AI.With highly pathogenic bird flu infecting around 70 dairy herds across 10 states in the USA, including a herd of alpacas, we get an update from health journalist Helen Branswell of StatNews on the latest science and efforts to get on top of the infection. Also, from the pioneers of the mRNA vaccines that helped turn around the COVID pandemic, an experimental version that could be rolled out rapidly if the bird flu does cross worryingly into people. University of Pennsylvania's Scott Hensley described how it works, and how promising it looks.Science in Action also hears how Europe's new EarthCARE satellite, equipped to peer deep inside clouds, will tackle one of the biggest unknowns in the science of global warming.Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Jonathan Blackwell

Bald soll der ESA-Satellit EarthCARE ins All starten.

This special episode features a guest host from Uganda, Dr. Edward Olara, who Forrest interviewed in episode 71. Edward was once Forrest's student and has become a friend; they've worked together in Uganda to encourage and empower development professionals. Recently, Edward published a book called The Elephants and the Farmers. As the HOST of this episode, Dr. Olara interviews a Ugandan friend and colleague, Mr. Victor Ochen, the founder and Executive Director of the African Youth Initiative. Born in northern Uganda, he spent his first 21 years surviving a violent conflict that in the end displaced over three million people. In that conflict, the Lord's Resistance Army forcefully recruited or abducted 60,000 children to serve as soldiers—and among them was Mr. Ochen's own brother, who has never been returned. Since then, Mr. Ochen has worked for peace and healing—especially for victims of the war. In 2015, Forbes Magazines named him one of the ten most influential men to give new hope for Africa, and in that same year he became the youngest-ever African to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. More recently, he was awarded Archbishop Desmond Tutu's prestigious African Young Leaders Award for his role in promoting the culture of dignity, peace and reconciliation. In this episode, Forrest talks with Scott Sabin, Executive Director of the organization Plant with Purpose — an international faith-based organization that empowers the poor in rural areas around the world where poverty is connected to deforestation. Importantly, their approach to community development includes not just the planting of food-producing trees on farms, but also the work of the reforestation and species diversification of publicly shared land. Among other things, Scott explains that the tens of millions of trees the organization has helped to plant over the years can seem insignificant when one looks at the enormity of the deforestation problem across the globe. However the crucial practice for staying the course is to focus on the part each of us can play, and trust God to multiply our efforts. When I first heard the word permaculture & heard that there were 12 principles it conjured up all sorts of complicated concepts that my new gardening brain just couldn't fathom. I was flat out working out how to keep a few pots of herb alive let alone applying 12 principles to my gardening. I mean, come on!! Who has time for that? What I came to realise is that we all do. Permaculture is something we can all use to help guide our food growing journey and more. I want to demystify permaculture for the newbie gardener a little but. Take out some of the unfamiliar language that can sometimes cause us to think what the duck does that even mean.

For 2000 years the Western church has emphasized the incarnation as a necessary step for our atonement, and I'm grateful for that emphasis. For 1900 years the Eastern church has emphasized the incarnation for its ontology, and I'm grateful for that, too. The ancient paleo-Hebrew worldview has something to say as well about the purpose of God's having incarnated the second person of the Trinity, and it is a beautiful purpose! I also reflect on the mass murder in Uvalde and the growing cultural-moral divide.

In his latest book, “The Trail to Kanjiroba: Rediscovering Earth in an Age of Loss,” New Mexico author William deBuys chronicles his travels in Nepal, where he joined extended medical expeditions. Along the way, he reflects on the landscapes and cultures of northern New Mexico, where he has lived for four decades, and considers the ways in which caring for the Earth—rather than trying to save it—will better serve a planet in crisis. “The Trail to Kanjiroba” is the third in a trilogy, following “A Great Aridness” (2011) and “The Last Unicorn” (2015), and in it, deBuys also grapples with concepts of EarthCare and what it means to have hope for the future. Here, he talks about his travels and hopes with correspondent Laura Paskus. Bernalillo County Clerk joins host Gene Grant to discuss the upcoming municipal elections. I've been learning, collaborating, teaching and having fun with Hannah Mole of Earthcare since I met her while teaching Greenworks Permaculture courses more than 10 years ago. At the same time, Hannah's actions in the world of Permaculture contribute to land and community regeneration in Ireland. Listen notes
Right now might be an excellent time to bring play and playfulness to the Earthcarers' ethos. Lisa Wriley has received the rights to reinvent her favourite New Zealand board game from the 70s, hoping to make it available to all those who love a good sit round the table in the spirit of environmental cooperation. "Earthcare" the board game, rolls the dice on a more sustainable future, for those keen to close the circle on material waste and to embrace some family and friend time too. To find out about playability, Understorey also speaks to two fans of "Earthcare": Sue Martin, national coordinator of Catholic Earthcare Australia; and Julian Bowker, a cyber security expert. So to find out if it's a game for your kitchen table, or your camp by the billabong, Understorey explores more about the art of making board games, and the newer skill of running a Kickstarter campaign (as an all-or-nothing venture by July 11) .
Johnny is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to permaculture and regeneration and we're lucky to have this man's influence in our community! He has been the head of the Greenhouse park project based at the industrial area in Port Kembla NSW, to restore the old industrial wasteland and has demonstrated that the land can be healed and proved this by creating a healthy food forest in a once wasteland dumpsite. His project/family home is the Budawang permaculture project and is being used as a work in progress example of how adopting arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems can lead to better land management, more nutrient-dense crops, and actually create higher yields. All creating a deeper understanding and connection to land, ecosystem, and Earth! He also shared his life experience of the year that was 2020. First, with the fires threatening his property, Covid, and then a serious surf accident thrown into the mix, it was a big test for Johnny and his family and shows the resilience, determination, and mental fortitude of this man when up against the odds of life.If you enjoy this episode please remember to like and share.Treading LightlyInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/treading_lightly_inc/Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/TreadingLightlyInc/Website |https://treadinglightly.org.au/Budawang earthcareInstagram | www.instagram.com/budawang_earthcare/

Earthkeepers: A Circlewood Podcast on Creation Care and Spirituality
In this episode Forrest Inslee, Earthkeepers Podcast host, and James Amadon, Executive Director of Circlewood, talk about what the podcast is about, and what to expect in future episodes. Both tell their stories of how they sense and understand God in nature, and how creation care eventually became a core element of their respective callings. They speak of the need for community among people who believe that earth care is connected to spiritual practice. Only by finding support in one and other, and by learning in global community from a diversity of perspectives, can ecologically-minded people begin to shape a movement--a movement to combat climate change, to mobilize for environmental restoration, to advocate for environmental justice, and to restore right relationship between people and the rest of creation of which they are a part.Notes Circlewood Vision & Mission Statement: https://www.circlewood.online/aboutJames' & Forrest's bios: https://www.circlewood.online/peopleAuthor Wendell Berry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendell_Berry

Joyce Bone, MBA equips other achievers in skyrocketing their financial results through her guidance as a speaker, podcast host of the Anxiety-Free Selling show, author of Millionaire Moms, sales coach and business consultant. She is also active in real estate as both an investor and licensed agent. At age 28 as a former stay-at-home mom, Joyce co-founded and led EarthCare, an environmental company traded on NASDAQ achieving $125 million annual revenues. She has raised over $65 million dollars and has pitched investors nationally and internationally including Sweden, India and Canada. Since that time, she has successfully helped other companies and individuals learn to influence and sell in a more productive and empowering way. Past clients range from Fortune 500s to, “Eat What You Kill” (1099) sales professionals in the real estate, financial services, insurance, mortgage, and direct marketing sectors, to small business owners including IT and CPG companies. As an entrepreneur, she is nationally recognized for her business acumen. Featured on CNBC’s The Squawk Box, and in Kiplinger, Money, Woman’s Day, Forbes, Atlanta Business Chronicle, and a host of other media outlets, Joyce is who the media often turn to for sound business advice. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How it all got started for Joyce with a bottle of Tide. How that moment made her decide to change the financial story for her family. The way Joyce’s childhood experiences shaped her drive and determination to provide more for her family. The importance of overcoming obstacles and how Joyce overcame what she perceived as her first obstacle as she launched her business. How one little tweak in her mindset, the way she viewed obstacles, changed the course of her life and how it affects all entrepreneurs as they begin their journeys. The aggressive goal Joyce set for herself by the time she was 30 (and she was only 28 when the bottle of Tide was out of reach) and how that goal shaped the type of business she’d have to create. The importance of a lunch meeting with her former boss and how an idea was born out of that meeting (and a partner made)! Why Joyce believed that buying up smaller companies to form a larger company and then going public would be her ticket to the aggressive goal she set for herself. Roadblocks and obstacles Joyce faced along the way that redirected and refocused her efforts. Why Joyce firmly believes you don’t have to know everything to start. You just have to start and then move forward. Why it’s easier to sell people your dream and raise money when you’re talking to people who understand the industry you’re working in. The importance of mentors and continuous self-improvement and the people who have helped Joyce along the way. And how some mentors can teach you from afar. Peterson Toscano of Citizens' Climate Radio hosts today with perspectives from people of color on climate change, from organizations and individuals about environomental & climate justice, speaking with Peggy Sheppard of WE ACT For Environmental Justice and Dr. Beverly G Ward, Field Director for Earthcare for SE Yearly Meeting.
What do people of color concerned about climate change and environmental impacts to their communities want white climate advocates to know? What roles do climate organizations with mostly white members play in environmental justice work? How do you define "the environment," and what is climate justice? Today we take on a big story. Bigger than any single extreme weather event, we explore the topics of environmental justice and climate justice. We look at how injustice in society, particularly in the USA, deepens suffering during a time of climate change. Peggy Sheppard, the co-founder and executive director of WE ACT For Environmental Justice and Dr. Beverly G Ward, Field Director for Earthcare for the Southeastern Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, talk about their work pursuing environmental and climate justice. Art House/Puzzler We did not want to rush the conversations with our guests, so we do not include an Art House segment or a new puzzler. Peterson will share the answers from last month's puzzler on Ep 17. You still have time to send in your answers. Puzzler Question You are chatting with an acquaintance, let's call him Larry. Somehow you get to talking about windmills and the rapid advances in renewable technology. Larry is sympathetic but bothered by something. He says to you, Yeah, I understand that these windmills can help to get us off of coal and gas, but they look so ugly! I hate how they are destroying the countryside. So What would you say to Larry? Try to think of something that will open up the conversation and get him to better understand climate change. Get back to Peterson by October, 15, 2017. You can also email your answers to radio @ citizensclimate.org or leave a voicemail of 3 minutes or less at 570.483.8194. (+1 if calling from outside the USA.) You can hear Citizens’ Climate Radio on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Podbean, Northern Spirit Radio, Google Play, and TuneIn Radio. This episode is a look back over 2014 and the guests that garnered the most responses from listeners, as well as some of my favorites, and the guest who I have received the most comments in the history of the podcast. If you are someone new to the show or have been listening for some time, this is a good primer on episodes to go back and listen to and get a feel for what you will find in the back catalog. If you've been listening for a while you may have already heard some of these or, if you are like me and have listened to all the hundreds of episodes in the archives, you might can check out some of the great shows in the archives. I did not want to do a normal top five or top ten list, so left how many folks to feature up to chance and rolled two six-sided dice to see how many to select, then of the one most popular guests was actually a duo, leaving us with the top 9 most interviewees of this year. In no particular order, and with a brief description of the interview, they are: Marisha Auerbach who joined me to discuss urban permaculture and the role of preserving bio-diversity in that space. Ben Weiss and Wilson Alvarez were on the show several times and talked about their Rewilding efforts, and to answer listener questions about their 2013 interview “Restoring Eden”. You can hear more about the piece that started it all through this link: Restoring Eden Natasha Alvarez and I sat down to talk about Permaculture as Revolution and how, through her project The Year of Black Clothing, she found more love for the world and how to take action to protect Earth. Listen and find your own connections to this place we call home and how to make a difference in your own way. Eric Puro of ThePOOSH.org discussed the organization, natural building, and finding solutions from local resources. He also encourages anyone who wants to do this, or any other kind of permaculture work, to go out there, get your hands dirty, and get digging. Rhamis Kent (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) was the first guest in the Faith and Earthcare series. Through multiple episodes Rhamis provided an open perspective on Islam and the tenets of faith that leads us to understand how this religion implores the faithful to care for the earth and one another. If your main exposure to Islam is through the nightly news, give this one a listen and gain a better understanding of this faith. Adam Campbell (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) spent nearly three hours with me discussing permaculture and education and the operations at the Peace and Permaculture Center where he lives along with other members of the Possbility Alliance. Tradd Cotter joined me to discuss his latest book, Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation, an incredible work that demystifyies mushrooms and makes the practice of propagation and remediation more accessible for anyone interesting in playing with fungi. and finally that brings us to Mark Shepard (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) whose interview on a single day yielded nearly three hours of finished material spread across three episodes of the podcast. He shared with us his background and, through the lens of listener questions, the practices of restoration agriculture. My personal favorites from this year, excluding any that may have already been mentioned above, include Byron Joel, for having such an honest conversation with me and still allowing what became very personal and private to be made public. Rachel Kaplan, my first interview guest ever, for coming back onto the show after all these years for another great conversation. Two other interviews that really strike me are the ones with Karryn Olson-Ramanujan and Derrick Jensen. Both of those conversations challenged my perspectives in ways that I wasn't ready for, and I still reflect on how to make permaculture more accessible and diverse, while also fitting it into the larger context of protecting and repairing the earth. In looking back over 2014 there remains one final question. Who was the biggest guest of all time on the show? Was it someone from the past year? No. That was someone who has not appeared since 2013, Ethan Hughes (Part 1: Radical Possibilities) (Part 2: Practical Possibilities). His conversations then and in 2012 about the Possibility Alliance really inspired many listeners to make changes in their lives and reach out to let me know of the impact it had. The work of all the members of the Possibility Alliance and Stillwater Sanctuary to live without petrol or electricity speaks to an authenticity in living our lives that many desire to move towards. Those conversations with Ethan Hughes continues to influence my way of thinking and is one of the many reasons for moving the podcast and my online permaculture work towards a gift economy. If you are a student looking for a Permaculture Design Course, let me know. If you are a permaculture teacher organizing a class you want to spread the word about, let me know. If you are an organizer planning a permaculture convergence, a permablitz, or some other permaculture gathering or project, let me know. As I always say: I am here to help. My guest Pete Kanaris is a serial entrepreneur. He has started a whole bunch of businesses, some have worked, some haven't. Despite the failures, he has always found a way to push on and try new things to ultimately get to where he wants to be. That also references another unique point in Pete's story. One of Pete’s most successful businesses was a lawncare business. It was a business that Pete ran for over 10 years and it was really successful. But it wasn't something that Pete liked doing anymore. Along the way he became exposed to permaculture and it became clear that the pathway into the future didn't involve cutting grass, it involved permaculture. So he put it all on the line and started a permaculture design company, Green Dreams. It wasn't about the money; he wanted to do something that he loved doing and something that he believed in. Given the risk and uncertainty involved in starting any new business it would have been easy to take the safe route and stick with what he had, a thriving lawncare business. But he didn't take the easy route, and he put in the hard work to make Green Dreams a reality. Pete's continued push to innovate and try new things has already paid off and Green Dreams is growing. His story is inspirational for anyone out there looking to take that hard first step. As he says, “start small and when the door opens, go big and never look back.” Show Notes: permaculturevoices.com/67
