Full disclosure: This was a weird podcast. I had invited my friend and colleague, LA Weekly founder, Jay Levin on the podcast to talk about censorship and the social-emotional learning work he's been doing since leaving journalism. Truth be typed, I was way more interested in talking about the state of journalism, given that Jay had given birth to the coolest alt weekly the country has seen (I say this totally objectively, despite having written for the paper for nine years ;) ), and is now seeing the world through a very different lens than I am. I guess I thought that a 1:1 conversation would snap us out of our various angles of mind control, and allow us to hear and grok one another's perspectives, and forge the way for common ground and healing.Spoiler alert: It didn't go down like this.I am breaking from my usual format of putting the second half of our conversation behind the paywall that is my Locals and Patreon communities for a couple reasons: 1. I think the contrast between the first and second half offers some really valuable insight on the barriers our populace is currently having when it comes to understanding one another.2. Jay was far more interested in talking about his SEL journey than in journalism. I'd toyed with the idea of posting the SEL half of the conversation as Part 1, and the journalism conversation as Part 1. But, I didn't really flow. So, in an effort to honor Jay's time and efforts, I decided to post the whole show for the public, so that the largest possible audience could learn more about his SEL work. That being said, I still encourage you to support me on Locals and/or Patreon, as your support goes a long way in allowing me to continue to put out content. You can pick the platform(s) of your choice here:danikatz.locals.comwww.patreon.com/danikatzLearn more about Jay and his SEL work:https://equipourkids.orgThanks for tuning in, tribe. I'll be back with my usual cast of edge-pushing rebels next week. Pinky swear. Correction: I don't know for a fact that Matt Taibi was kicked off of PayPal, though I do know he's written about journalists being banned from PayPal. Read about it here: https://www.racket.news/p/paypals-indymedia-wipeout

It's Pride Month and we are taking a second look at the LGBTQ+ community. We have two guests. The first is Linda K. Reeves, a licensed marriage and family therapist certified as a gender specialist by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. She is the founder of Linda K. Reeves Therapy. Her therapy utilizes her clinical skills in the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-binary, questioning, and queer identified individuals. Her recent article in Good Housekeeping, "How to Support Your LGBTQ+ Kid When He, She or They Come Out," got our attention. We talk to her about this and well as what it means for a young person to come out to their family and friends. We discuss how to respond to your child or friend and what to say and what not to say. We also talk about the current continued discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, We switch gears entirely when we welcome a Tik-Tok sensation - JannaTransMomma. (she explains the unusual spelling of mamma). Janna is a a single mom to a trans child named Cody. She's been identified as a key influencer on Tik-Tok (love it or hate it) for making a real difference for trans youth. She gives us a quick 101 lesson on what it means to be transgender, how to support your child and/or friends or family. Janna shares some of the scary statistics about trans people and suicide. Acceptance, she says, will save a life. She is honest about the mistakes she made on her journey and is funny, delightful and very knowledgeable. Imagine having children with CF and living in another country. In your country they don't have any CF medications, and maybe only a handful of people have been diagnosed with the disease. Even testing equipment is difficult to come by. Doctors in your country don't have a lot of knowledge about CF, and basic medications aren't accessible. The Bonnell Foundation and others have worked tirelessly to raise awareness, and to make change in many middle eastern countries, but it's a slow process. This is why we're excited to tell you about the non-profit Dr. Golnar Raissi and her husband created to help them at their CF clinic in Stanford, Connecticut. They put together the CF Bridge of Hope to extend the same treatment people are getting in the U.S. to people living in other counties with limited resources.Doing great work with Dr. Raissi and her husband, is Bean Corcoran. Bean helps with the entire program, getting applications complete and another part of the program. They also can send unexpired meds to people in need, and the organization pays for shipping. So if you have CF meds you don't need, email the Bridge of Hope. Beans adult son Will has CF. CF Bridge of Hope is currently helping people in Romania, Guatemala, Ukraine and Pakistan. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and in honor of this and all victims and survivors, I wanted to spread a bit of awareness, based on the work I've done in my own community over the past 15 years. I also share a spoken word piece that I wrote about 10 years ago as a compilation of several people's stories. These are real people who have overcome so much because they had support and resources. We can all do SOMETHING to help prevent this horrific crime and also to help those who have been impacted by it...and the truth is...we are ALL impacted by it whether we know it or not.TRIGGER WARNING: There is intense and disturbing content in this episode that could be triggering for some, especially those who have suffered sexual traumas or those with PTSD, etc. To learn more about how you can get involved or make a difference, here are a few resources:polarisproject.orgwww.barbaraamaya.comwww.courtneyshouse.orgThanks for taking the time and having the courage to listen! My guest today will not only motivate and inspire you, but she is also here as a survivor, on a mission, to expose the dark and disturbing cracks in our foster care system, the cultic dangers of the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church, and then wrapping it up with such a powerful and inspiring message for abuse victims and survivors.Myra Vanry grew up in the foster care system from the age of 3 years old. Myra endured years of racism, mental and sexual abuse. At the age of 8, Myra and her sister were adopted into a cult where she endured even more abuse at the hands of her pastor father. At the age of 17, she was put into another foster family that continued the abuse leaving Myra feeling like there was no point in living. Fast forward to today, Myra is happily married and living the dream she has envisioned for herself. She is currently in pharmacy school, and devotes her spare time telling her story and speaking out for survivors of abuse. Listen to the whole story of how Myra went from being in a broken system, years of abuse, to now living the life she has always dreamed. I want to personally thank Myra for sharing her story. I hope this inspires and opens up a lot of people's eyes.TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses mental and physical abuse towards minors, listener discretion is advised. Every so often I speak to someone that has changed things so fundamentally for me, that I can literally mark it as a day in the calendar.Today is one of those conversations. It all started a few years ago when a book arrived through the post from two people I respect very deeply. So I did what you would expect. I put it on my bookshelf and ignored it for six months. When I did finally pull it down to read, true to prediction, it was as if that book had been written for me.That book was called ‘The Big Leap' by my guest today Gay Hendricks. The Big Leap basically describes a phenomenon known as The Upper Limit Problem. Where we all have a limit on how much success and love we're willing to let into our lives - kind of like an inner thermostat setting. Exceed the limit and we start to self sabotage, burn out, play small and create situations that make us unable to move from our Zone of Competence (where we are comfortable but unfulfilled) into our Zone of Genius (the truest and most powerful expression of who you). So I made a commitment. I would read The Big Leap every morning for 15 minutes and continue to do so until I felt a shift in my own upper limits.Did things change immediately? No. Did I start to feel my grip and attachment to the limitations I had set on my own existence slowly begin to loosen? Yes.Has it fundamentally changed how I monitor and continually reset my own internal thermostat for the level at which I show up? Absolutely.Today's Guest Gay Hendricks has been a leader in the fields of relationship transformation and body-mind therapies for more than 45 years. After earning his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Stanford, he served as a professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Colorado for over 21 years. In that time he has written more than 40 books, including bestsellers such as Five Wishes, The Big Leap and Conscious Living (another book I wholeheartedly recommend) all of which are now used as primary texts in universities around the world. Gay conducts seminars worldwide and has appeared on more than 500 radio and television shows, including OPRAH, CNN, CNBC and many, many others.Twitter: https://twitter.com/GayHendricksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hendricks.gay/You'll LearnThe Upper Limit Problem – what it is, how it works and the 4 hidden barriers that trigger it. Welcome to Saturday Morning Coffee for Saturday, May 21, 2022!Reese and Glenn are back in the studio this week -- Reese gives a shout out to the Christian Academy Saints, who won the SCISA SC State Championship in Men's Soccer, and placed 2nd in Girl's Soccer! Reese discusses the 2000 Mules movie, and the work of truethevote.org in providing the data and research for the movie, and his believe that everybody should see 2000 Mules when they can. We also discuss the many leading indicators that now indicate the Republic is in decline: the shrinking dollar, the sputtering economy, a Congress and President that are spending money like there is (literally) NO TOMORROW... (do they know something that we don't), a million migrants illegally crossing the Southern border with a POTUS that doesn't seem to care, and the decision of the Biden Administration to cede a huge bit of US national sovereignty to the World Health Organization (of all people), and much, much, much, much more (unfortunately). We're joined on the show by special guest, Rep. Tom Rice, who joins us to discuss his campaign for re-election in South Carolina's 7th Congressional District, his accomplishments in five terms representing the District, and lingering sentiments along the campaign trail about his controversial vote in Jan. 2021 to impeach Donald Trump. (www.tomrice.com)We're also joined on the show by Jeanne and Carter Smith with Coastline Women's Center, to discuss the Center's ongoing work and mission, and recent developments, protest, and other thoughts prompted by the recently-leaked SCOTUS opinion in the Dobbs case that appears to suggest the Court will soon move to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision of 1972. We encourage everyone to check out and support the great work that Coastline Women's Center is doing! Welcome to Saturday Morning Coffee for April 30, 2022!On this week's show, Reese and Glenn discuss the recent purchase of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk, and how it has brought the Left and the Twitter-sphere to near-meltdown status. We also discuss the announcement this week of the formation of of a "Disinformation Governance Board" within the Dept. of Homeland Security, and what a disastrously bad (and dangerous) idea this is.Sen Josh Kimbrell (R-Spartanburg), member of the S.C. Senate, also joins us on the program to discuss our efforts to pass election integrity reform legislation, and the current status of that bill in the S.C. Senate. Sen. Kimbrell also discusses his efforts to remove certain items from the Senate's version of the State budget, including funding for a gender reassignment clinic at MUSC. We're also joined on the show by Tyson Langhofer, Esq., an attorney who leads the Center for Academic Freedom at the Alliance Defending Freedom, who joins us to discuss the recent victory announced by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in the case in which Langhofer and the ADF Team represented Prof. Nick Merriwether in his legal case with his employer, Shawnee State University (Ohio). The University had previously required Prof. Merriwether to use pronouns at the request of one of his students, that were not the student's biological pronouns. When Prof. Merriwether refused to comply, this case ensued. The opinion from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals confirms the argument made by ADF, that the Government cannot compel a college professor (or anyone else) to say or state something that that individual knows to be untrue. The Merriwether decision is an important victory for religious and academic freedom, and an important victory for individual liberty, whether one agrees with Dr. Merriwether's perspective on the issues or not.For more information, or to support the important work of the Alliance Defending Freedom, go to: ADFlegal.orgThanks for listening to Saturday Morning Coffee!Proverbs 3:5-6
In part two of this 3-part series, we continue our conversation with Dr. James Knight and his work with cultural humility. He reminds us that while fundamentally our questions remain constant, answers to questions change day-to-day; on our respective journeys toward cultural humility, it's critical that we not only continue to ask questions but also listen as replies evolve. Learn more about Dr. James Knight, his book "Heart," and more at LeadwithHumility.orgThanks for listening to our podcast. For more news from Almaden Country Day School, please visit our website.
What if you could always sit down on a regular basis and actively prep for your next game in a way that left you feeling confident and positive? What if you could work in such a way as to unlock your maximum creativity while preserving your energy and motivation for the long haul?We all know how exciting it can feel to set up a brand new roleplaying game campaign - you are pumped with the vision, bouyed by the positivity of the players, and raring to go! I know Monday episodes are usually interview eps, however, where we live in the Northern Rivers, which has been hit badly by the floods. 7 days ago now, and we wanted to share an honest account of whats going on here on the ground. If you're overwhelmed and not sure what to do; then just helping to build awareness and sharing peoples posts about the devastation is powerful and should help to build awareness. We need skilled professionals on the ground here, the community have been going above and beyond but none of us know how to run a food drive or coordinate a clean up in a natural disaster. We’re now over a month past the solstice and I can assure you that there’s more light in our day and there will be an end to winter. For now, there certainly is a lot of cold and it’s a shame there’s no way to conduct a harvest. I’m Sean Tubbs and I spend my time indoors with the curtains drawn pouring through meetings and agendas to bring you Charlottesville Community Engagement, a newsletter and podcast that wants you to keep track of the sky. On today’s show:Legislation to allow Charlottesville to hold a referendum on a one percent sales tax increase for education has passed the SenateCharlottesville needs more time to respond to a lawsuit from a former city managerAlbemarle County begins the redistricting process and may accelerate it due to a pending federal lawsuit that could force House of Delegates races this NovemberCharlottesville’s public housing body is briefed on back rent owed by a third of tenants, and the city wants proposals for three quarters of a million dollars in affordable housing moneyFirst Patreon-fueled shout-out:With winter weather here, now is the time to think about keeping your family warm through the cold Virginia months. Make sure you are getting the most out of your home with help from your local energy nonprofit, LEAP. LEAP wants you and yours to keep comfortable all year round, and offers FREE home weatherization to income- and age-qualifying residents. Today the Virginia Department of Health reports another 10,699 new cases and the seven day-percent positivity is at 29.5 percent. While the trend this week is downward, these numbers are still higher than at most points during the pandemic. In the Blue Ridge Health District, there are another 350 new cases reported today and the seven-day average for new positive tests is at 25.1 percent. There have been four new fatalities reported since Friday in the district. Augusta Health and the University of Virginia Health System are pleading with members of the public to get a COVID vaccination and a booster to reduce strain on the medical infrastructure. “After two years and four surges, COVID-19 has tragically claimed the lives and health of too many in our communities,” reads a joint press release from both entities. “Our care teams are exhausted, both physically and mentally.”The release points out that the vast majority of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated and urges people to get the booster. It also asks people to continue wearing a mask in public but to upgrade to one that is medical grade as opposed to a cloth mask.Richardson lawsuit updateThe city of Charlottesville has asked for more time to respond to a federal lawsuit from former City Manager Tarron Richardson. Richardson filed a civil rights suit in November in the Western District of Virginia against Council and four individuals claiming he was discriminated against after members of Council broke a non-disparagement clause. He was also barred from publishing an op-ed in the Daily Progress. Charlottesville asked for an extension to respond to the argument, and Judge Norman K. Moon has given them until February 16. Charlottesville sales tax bill clears Virginia SenateHere’s a snapshot of where the General Assembly was at the close of business yesterday. The Senate has passed 37 bills, and the House of Delegates of Delegates has passed three, all three of which deal with insurance. So let’s focus today on the 40-member Chamber, where Senator Chap Petersen’s bill to permit hunting on Sunday passed the full Senate on a 29 to 11 vote (SB8). Both Charlottesville and Isle of Wight County are one step closer to being able to hold a referendum for a one percent sales tax increase to support education. SB37 for Isle of Wight County passed on a 27 to 12 vote. SB298 for Charlottesville passed on a 28 to 12 vote. In all, the CRHA is owed about $100,000 in back rent but Sales said that’s not the only financial hit public housing takes as a result because a federal match cannot be made. “And CRHA is not receiving the rental subsidy on it which negatively impacts the overall financial standing of the housing authority,” Sales said. The CRHA has been redirecting other funds towards covering the shortfall with grant funding covering April, May and half of June from last year. Sales said continuing lack of rent payment continues to trouble the federal government.“[The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development] is calling it out at every meeting and asks where we are doing to address it,” Sales said. The CRHA’s fiscal year ends on March 31. Sales said the agency is hiring an eviction prevention coordinator and housing stabilization position soon to work with families.“There is a policy now where the housing authority has to work with the families before moving forward with any eviction proceeding to at least get them to attempt to get the rent relief program,” Sales said. Sales said eviction is a last resort. The average rental payment is $247 a month and the monthly operating expense to run CRHA is currently $265,927. HUD considered CRHA to be a “troubled” agency and there will be an audit on March 16. At the meeting, former Charlottesville Mayor Nikuyah Walker was officially appointed to serve on the CRHA’s redevelopment committee in an at-large capacity.City seeking affordable housing proposals Since 2007, Charlottesville has had an affordable housing fund to help create and preserve affordable housing units. Today they’ve begun the process of soliciting proposals for how to use $750,000 from the current fiscal year’s capital budget. The notice for funding availability (NOFA) refers to the affordable housing plan adopted by Council last March. “This Plan recommends that the City make a strong and recurring financial commitment to address housing needs in Charlottesville in order to increase the number of subsidized affordable homes by 1,100 homes, preserve existing 600 existing subdidized affordable homes, and stabilize 1,800 to 2,000 owner and renter households facing housing instability,” reads the application. The application comes at a time when the firm HR&A continues to work on an audit of how the housing fund has been used. They gave a preliminary report to Council on December 20 that states the city has not tracked how the $38 million in local funds have been used to date. The current capital improvement program budget for this year includes $1.5 million for CHRA redevelopment, $900,000 for the supplemental rental assistance program, and over $3 million for the redevelopment of Friendship Court. The budget actually shows a line item of $925,000 for the housing fund this year. Questions are out but the answers will come in a future edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement. Guidelines require magisterial districts to be contained with Virginia’s legislative and Congressional lines. Under the new maps approved in late December by the Virginia Supreme Court, Albemarle falls entirely within the new 11th Senate District.“Albemarle County falls into two different Virginia House of Delegates districts, the 54th which is basically the urban ring around the city of Charlottesville and then the 55th which is the majority of the county,” said Anthony Bessette, the Senior Assistant County Attorney. There’s a slight glitch when it comes to the new House of Representatives maps.“Almost all of Albemarle County is in the 5th District but there is a tiny sliver up [north] that is in the 7th District,” Bessette said. There’s even a Twitter account for the sliver. Since 2010, Albemarle’s population grew by 13,385 people according to the Census but the growth isn’t even.“Rio and White Hall grew a great deal whereas on the other hand Scottsville did not grow at the same pace,” Bessette said. That means the Rio District and White Hall districts will need to be reduced in size and others will need to be expanded. In December, Supervisors approved preliminary guidelines that would keep their number at six. “The determination of whether to have six supervisors, five, four, seven, eight, etc, is a local decision that the Board of Supervisors gets to make,” Bessette said. Because of a federal lawsuit that may force an election for the House of Delegates this year, staff is now recommending an accelerated schedule in order to prepare for potential primaries in June. “Long story short on that is that timeline would see the process compressed further to begin on February 2 and end on March 23,” Bessette said. Attorney Paul Goldman has filed suit against the state Board of Elections arguing that the current districts for the House of Delegates are unconstitutional because they are out of date. Goldman filed a brief on January 18 in the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and attorneys for the Board of Elections have until January 28 to file additional materials. Public comment on redistricting will be taken at their February 2 meeting. The maps that have been developed so far were not shown to the public at the information session. Registrar Jake Washburne said three maps are being proposed. “We are planning to send those to the Board of Supervisors so they can be placed on the Board of Supervisors’ agenda for February 2,” Washburne said. In this episode Dee Hartmann shares the value of incorporating pleasure into treatment for pelvic pain. Pain-free intercourse is an excellent long-term goal, but our patients usually want to experience pleasure during intimate moments with their partners and themselves. Moving the brain from a pain to pleasure-focused state requires a graded approach from attuning to pleasurable sensation in our environment to exploring safe and pleasurable touch with ourselves. Calming the brain, feeling embodied, and safe in communication to receive pleasurable touch are incredibly important for physical, emotional, and relational healing. If you would like to learn more about integrating pleasure into your rehab practice, and want to provide your clients with a great resource, I highly recommend reading 'The Pleasure Prescription; A Surprising Approach to Healing Sexual Pain.' It includes case studies, diagrams, and the latest scientific research. Each chapter ends with “prescriptions” designed to guide readers through the healing process.Other resources mentioned in this podcast include:Vulvalove.comPleasuremovement.comGenitalhealth.orgThanks for tuning into the show and, please, leave a review!
