David Lynch advocates for being fully present on set to recognize and maximize visual opportunities that present themselves serendipitously. While planning ensures you have a roadmap and backup plan, being flexible allows you to adapt to the changing dynamics of a scene, which can often lead to unexpectedly brilliant shots.Test your gear, test your look. Testing is crucial to understand how different lenses and cameras perform under various conditions and to ensure consistency in your film's visual style. By definition your customer cannot be the average mass-market customer who goes for fast fashion products. It may limit your market, but many businesses can succeed with a niche strategy. They were tired from years of fighting for their book to be noticed, and they're not alone. There are hundreds of Christian authors who also feel this way!But there's a big problem with this line of thinking. It's like saying, “Well, if God wants this book to be successful, why isn't He making it happen?” No, you may never actually say those words to God, but are you saying that with your actions — or inactions? This line of thinking suggests that success solely depends on divine intervention. In other words, it's all on God, and we don't have a part in making the gifts and the talents He's given us have an impact. All too often, believing that God's will should manifest in the form of effortless success is a huge hindrance to reaching our full potential. So if we are going to get our message out there, we have to release this limiting belief once and for all. Taking Responsibility for Your SuccessBefore we get to the what and the how, let's talk about why. Why do we embrace this line of thinking? For many, it's simply because this limiting belief allows us to abdicate responsibility for our own actions and outcomes. This dream of reaching the world with our God-given message is not easy. So in order to be successful, you'll have to put in the work, learn new things, release old ways of thinking, and literally transform into a different person. After all, if what you currently have and what you're currently doing was enough, you would already be getting the results you're looking for. Being successful will require a push. But pushing is uncomfortable, and most of us want to hold on to our comfort. It's comforting to think that everything is already predestined, and we don't have a part in the process, isn't it?But the reality is this. We have an opportunity to hone our craft and learn from our failures. And while God does have a plan for each and every one of us, He also gives every one of us free will and expects us to take action to reach our goals. Think about it: the Bible is full of examples of people who had to use their own talents and strengths combined with faith for God's plan to come true for them. Look at Joseph. His hard work ensured he rose from being a slave in Egypt to becoming Pharaoh's right hand man so he could save his people from famine. Yes, God certainly was at work in his life. He spoke confidently before Pharaoh after receiving strength from God, even though he had been an outcast since childhood and had a big stuttering problem. Don't think that it wasn't uncomfortable for Moses to step into this position! But he did it. Both Joseph and Moses had to push past discomfort and use their unique gifts and talents along with their faith in order for God's plan for them — and ultimately, God's plan for God's people — to come true. It's hard work combined with faith that creates extraordinary results. 3 Deliberate Steps to Help Your Book Reach Its PotentialAs Christian authors, we often cling to the belief that if our book is meant to be successful, God will make it happen. #150 - It's time to celebrate! The Real Estate UnSalesperson podcast is two years old!I can't believe that I have been podcasting for that long.In the podcasting world, this is a big accomplishment. The average podcast only lasts 8 episodes. The Real Estate UnSalesperson podcast is currently ranked in the top 10% of all podcasts.When I was learning how to podcast, the instructor said to write down titles for 20 episodes. I really struggled with this. I had trouble coming up with 20 topics. After much brainstorming, I finally did – and guess what? I only recorded episodes on about 3 of those topics. The show has evolved several times as I've done it and somehow I have managed to come up with about 150 topics so far!I don't want this post to be self-indulgent, however. I'd like to share some lessons that I've learned from podcasting that you can apply to your career and life. Here they are.Lessons Learned From Podcasting That You Can ApplyChallenge yourself. Don't be complacent in your career. Try something that scares you. That's how you grow – and you may find out that it is the best thing that you have done.Try Something Different. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. If you want to grow your business, you've got to add to your marketing mix. If you fail, so what? You'll still gain valuable insights into what works for you or how to tweak your marketing.Value Your Connections. The best and most valuable part of your business is the connections that you make. Your business is your database. Without it, you have nothing. Keep in touch with everyone that you meet and offer them value. They will return the favor many times over with repeat and referral business.Be Flexible. Things seldom go as you plan. Don't get flustered. Roll with it. Things often turn out much better than you ever expected!Enjoy the journey. Your career and life are a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the ride every day. Learn the moves that took Debbie Thompson (@TomDesignShop) from selling jewelry in art markets to launching a successful online business that supports her family and helps people preserve memories.The Most Important Lesson LearnedWhen I book a guest on the Faithful Career Moves podcast, I have specific questions in mind. In this case, I wanted to know how Debbie Thompson became one of Etsy's top jewelry sellers. I wanted to know how she built the business, how long it took to make a profit, and how her life changed. (Of course, I also wanted to know how she saw the Lord's hands in the process.)So, that's how the interview started.But when we finished talking, the thoughts that lingered in my mind had nothing to do with the nuts and bolts of the business. Instead, I reflected more on the emotional side of this journey. The success of Tom Design Shop belies the mental and emotional challenges Debbie overcame to create it.Like the engraving needle touching metal for the first time, this interview only scratches the surface of the past 16 years. Still, I promise it's long enough to leave a mark. Here are just a few of the lessons that have stayed with me:Be Flexible. Debbie didn't set out to be a jewelry designer. She planned to sell photography at an art market and only made earrings as a backup plan. When customers bought the earrings instead of the prints, Debbie bought more beads and made more baubles. That is the first of many times this entrepreneur adjusted her business to meet demand and circumstances.Be Partners. When Tom Design Shop became profitable, Debbie's husband quit his job, set aside his career aspirations, and went to work for her. (He started out making bangles.) When they needed to move the business from their home to a commercial space, the Thompsons created alternating schedules so they could both care for the company and their kids.Be Creative. After having a baby, Debbie found herself lost in new motherhood, living in a new area, away from her support system, and suffering from undiagnosed postpartum depression. Making jewelry and starting an online business helped her rebound. The same thing happened when she delivered her second baby, only worse. Creating new designs somehow pulled her through again.Be Thankful. In Debbie's words, "There are things that happen just at the right time that shouldn't have happened. I think, 'Oh, my gosh, that was an answer to my prayer.' I'm constantly asking, asking, asking. I think it's also so important to thank, thank, thank, because just like your kids constantly asking for something, it gets hard. It gets draining on you. After I recognize and see the hand of God, I'm so thankful, and I thank Him."Though Debbie struggled with each transition in her life, the inspiration to keep making and selling jewelry played a significant role in her healing. That blessing alone would have been worth building the business. But as the success of Tom Design shows, God's plans are always bigger and better than we can imagine for ourselves.
