Matthew 5:13–16 (CSB) “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven."
BIBLE STUDY NOTES AND RESOURCES Summary: "You Are the Salt of the Earth: What is the Salt of the Covenant?" – Bible Study by Dr. Bryan Hudson This Bible study explores Jesus' declaration, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) and examines the deeper meaning behind the "salt of the covenant" referenced in Leviticus 2:13. Dr. Hudson explains that salt symbolizes influence, which is central to the believer's purpose and identity. Just as salt preserves, purifies, and adds flavor, Christians are called to influence the world through godly living and covenant relationship with God. Key themes include: Influence as the essence of salt: Salt's historic uses (purification, preservation, healing, and value) all reflect its power to influence, just as believers are called to influence the world through God's presence in them. Covenant relationship: The “salt of the covenant” represents a perpetual, faithful relationship with God, marked by commitment and consistency, not just temporary benefit. Spiritual formation through SHAPE: Using Rick Warren's acronym (Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, Experiences), Dr. Hudson explains how God shapes believers through trials (fire) and divine influence (salt). Seasoned by fire: Trials refine faith like fire purifies gold or forms stainless steel—painful but purposeful, producing strength and Christlikeness. New Testament application: Jesus shifts the salt metaphor from ritual to spiritual reality—"have salt in yourselves and peace with one another" (Mark 9:50)—emphasizing inner transformation that leads to external impact. Living as influencers: Believers must first be influenced by God to influence others effectively. A lack of God's influence leads to a loss of “saltiness” or spiritual vitality. Practical outcome: A life seasoned by God results in peace, stronger relationships, and the ability to represent Christ as both salt and light in the world. Ultimately, Dr. Hudson teaches that to be the salt of the earth is to live under God's influence, embody His covenant, and positively impact others with purity, purpose, and perseverance.

Teaching on Matthew 5:13 - Pt. 2
This year the focus in our 4-min devotions is on the teaching given by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew chapters 5 – 7. After the short “Blessed are…” phrases at the beginning of the sermon, often called the Beatitudes, Jesus said:“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. (Matthew 5:13)In the Old Testament, Job asked the question. “Can flavourless food be eaten without salt?”[1]. The answer, of course, is yes, but it would taste a lot better with salt and other seasonings. In New Testament days, salt was a preservative (keeping meat fresh before the days of coolers or fridges) and a condiment, adding to the flavour of a meal. As many commentators note, Christians have the call and authority to bring God's life to those around them and we have the power to bring positive change to our communities. To be a preservative of the faith and to add the flavour of God to a lost world. Writer, Ken Mongomery says that we, as the salt of the earth, “participate in the flavour of the redemptive kingdom of heaven”[2].In other words, by being salt in this world we give people a taste of Heaven. By sharing God's love and truth to those in our schools and streets, workplaces, and neighbourhoods, we crack open the door for the lost to glimpse a view of the eternal Father who is offering His love to them. Our saltiness has the ability to reveal a new world accessible to all: God's powerful story of love, sacrifice and redemption. Perhaps a good question to ask today is: “what do I need to do to be salt (that is, the life and flavour of God) to people in my street, my study group, my family, my workplace, my community?”Jesus warned of salt losing its saltiness. Salt mixed with other substances might become diluted. Thrown on an icy road, it will be less effective or less noticeable in a bowl of soup. Our lives, once purified by the saving power of faith in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross, may become less effective on the world around us if mixed with the values we were once rescued from. A lack of purity makes us bland and tasteless. No wonder it would be “thrown out and trampled underfoot”. The last thing the world needs is Christians who claim to be followers of Jesus (that is, salt – preservers of the faith, spreading the life, truth and love of God), but who mix their lives with compromise. They would rightly be rejected – thrown out – by those searching for truth. Those looking for faith are looking for something that is real and pure. Faith that is salty. Poet's don't typically compete for “coolest book cover,” and it's probably because Zbigniew Herbert won years ago. Today's poem is his tender look at poverty, pleasure, and irretrievable loss. Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924, in Poland in the city of Lvov, which is now a part of the Ukraine. His grandfather was an Englishman who settled in Lvov to teach English. His father, a former member of the Legions that had fought for restoration of Poland's independence, was a bank manager. Herbert's formal education began in Lvov and continued under German occupation in the form of clandestine study at the underground King John Casimir University, where he majored in Polish literature. He was a member of the underground resistance movement. In 1944, he moved to Krakow, and three years later he graduated from the University of Krakow with a master's degree in economics. He also received a law degree from Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun and studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Henryk Elzenberg.During the 1950s, Herbert worked at many low-paying jobs because he refused to write within the framework of official Communist guidelines. After widespread riots against Soviet control in 1956 brought about a political “thaw,” Herbert became an administrator at the Union of Polish Composers and published his first collection, Struna swiatla [The Chord of Light] (Czytelnik, 1956). The book immediately placed him among the most prominent representatives of the “Contemporaries” (young poets and writers associated with the weekly Contemporary Times). In 1957, Herbert published his second collection of verse, Hermes, pies i gwiazda [Hermes, the Dog and the Star] (Czytelnik). Four years later, he published his third book of poems, Studium przedmiotu [Study of the Object] (Czytelnik, 1961). In 1968, his Selected Poems, translated into English by Czeslaw Milosz and Peter Dale Scott, was released in both the United States and England, making Herbert one of the most popular contemporary poets in the English-speaking world. In 1971, he released the first Polish edition of Selected Poems.Herbert's 1983 collection, Raport z oblezonego miasta i inne wiersze [Report from the Besieged City] (Instytut Literacki), dealt with the ethical problems Poland faced while under martial law. The book was issued simultaneously through an emigré publishing house and as an underground edition in Poland. He also published a number of essay collections and works of drama. In 1962, he released his famous work, Barbarzyńca wogrodzie [Barbarian in the Garden] (Czytelnik), which was eventually translated into numerous languages.Herbert's numerous awards include the Kościelski Foundation Prize, the Austrian Lenau Prize, the Alfred Jurzykowski Prize, the Herder Prize, the Petrarch Prize, the Bruno Schulz Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society.Herbert was a coeditor of the poetry journal Poezja from 1965 to 1968 but resigned in protest of antisemitic policies. He traveled widely throughout the West and lived in Paris, Berlin, and the United States, where he taught briefly at the University of California, Los Angeles. He died in Warsaw on July 28, 1998.-bio via Academy of American Poets This is a public episode. 275 – Jesus says you are the salt of the earth. What are you doing about it?Recently, my friend Terese said: It's time to take your salt out of the salt shaker.I took that to mean: quit hiding yourself, your God-given gifts and talents, and what you have to contribute to society. Be who God made you to be and share it with the world.Being the salt of the earth can mean lots of things. In the Bible salt had numerous uses and metaphorical meanings. Salt wasConnected with purity Used to preserve foodUsed to flavor foodSometimes used to destroy the soil's ability to grow cropsRequired in many burnt offeringsUsed as a medium of exchangeConsidered a healing agentWhen Jesus said we are the salt of the earth, he could have been referring to some or all of these uses for salt.In this week's episode, I unpack how all these ways to use and think about salt apply to our lives today. You'll be surprised how I describe adding salt to burnt offerings applies to us today.Your salt is the Christly flavor you bring to your life and all those around you. If you keep this Christlikeness to yourself, it's like having a salt shaker on the table but never putting any salt on your food.If you keep your salt to yourself, you may be the salt, but not the salt of the earth. It's time to take you salt out of the salt shaker and share your love for Christ with others.Show notes:For a full transcript and all Bible quotes, go to thebiblespeakstoyou.com/275Text me your questions or comments.Support the showIf you enjoy the podcast, please rate and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify__________________James Early, the Jesus Mindset Coach, is a Bible teacher, speaker, and podcaster.
