Text Agony Aunt Roz with your Cutflower Questions.Hi, I'm Roz Chandler, and welcome to The Cut Flower Podcast! This January, I'm excited to bring you a special five-episode series all about the benefits of growing your own cut flowers. Today, I'll share how to start growing flowers as a side hustle or even transition into a full-fledged business.Episode SummaryIn this episode, I share my journey from starting with three raised beds to managing a thriving five-acre flower farm. Whether you're looking to sell at local markets, supply florists, or offer DIY wedding buckets, I'll guide you through the first steps. I'll cover how to start small, grow sustainably, and set the foundations for a profitable venture.Key TakeawaysStart Small: When I started, it was just three raised beds. Even a small garden or a 1-square-meter plot can yield significant results with planning.Plan Your Flowers: Choose customer favorites like sweet peas, dahlias, and cosmos. Think about who you want to sell to—florists, markets, or DIY brides—and tailor your choices.Sustainability Matters: Growing your own flowers reduces reliance on imports and eliminates the need for harmful pesticides. It's a great way to protect our environment.Profitability: With the right approach, even a small plot can be lucrative. For example, by rotating tulips and dahlias in the same space, you can double your yield.Community Support: Join my Cut Flower Kickoff 2025 Facebook Group, where you'll find free guides, live Q&As, and plenty of support from fellow growers.Steps You Can Take Right NowStart prepping your soil with compost or manure.Browse seed catalogs and choose flowers you love.Plan for successional planting to maximize your blooms.Begin sowing hardy annuals in March or later in the season, depending on your setup.Brush up on basic floristry skills to create beautiful bouquets.Join Me in the Facebook GroupIf you're excited to grow your own cut flowers, join our Cut Flower Kickoff 2025 Facebook Group. It's full of resources, including free guides on setting up a side hustle, creating a cutting patch, and more. Whether you live in a city apartment with only a small balcony or have a tiny backyard, there's no reason why you can't start an organic garden. In the latest episode of Organic Gardening for Beginners, I share some new strategies, experiences, and practical tips for maximizing you garden in small spaces.Small Space Organic GardeningSmall spaces can easily limit our garden dreams, but it doesn't have to be this way. One of my main tips in this episode is going vertical when you're short on space. This approach maximizes space by utilizing trellises, arbors, hanging baskets, and stackable towers. Even unconventional or upcycled materials like rain gutters can be used to create a vertical garden or container space. Another key tip for maximizing a small gardening space is the concept of companion planting. This technique allows you to get more from your garden by planting crops that benefit each other. For example, you can plant tomatoes with basil, which is said to enhance the flavor of the tomatoes and will fill out your pots completely as the plants share space.Upcycle and Use Unusual ContainersI've used shoe organizers, old wheelbarrow basins, and I even have rain gutters on my list as potential containers in a small space garden. You don't have to stick to pots and planters to find room for your plants!Stick to Dwarf and Compact VarietiesYou can avoid sprawling plants by growing compact or dwarf varieties of flowers and veggies like cucumber, nasturtium, sweet peas, zucchini, and even tomatoes. Compact varieties will free up a little more space for your plants and give you room to try new things. Tune in to this latest podcast episode and get all the deets and demos for your own small-space garden. Happy gardening!

Why would you need to grow in a small space? Apartment livingPhysically close crops without walking to a gardenMoving and want to take crops with youAll About ContainersAnything can be a growing container so long as it provides drainageVertical planter towers offer multiple pots to grow food in one vertical spaceSome folks use fabric shoe organizers that hang on the backside of doors to grow food in pocketsHanging baskets offer a great option growing; think upside down tomato baskets, strawberries, etc.Plastic pots retain moisture betterBlack and other dark-colored pots get hot and heat the soil quickTerra Cotta is attractive and eco-friendly but dries out fasterPro Tip: Double Potting! Place a smaller pot inside a larger one in the summer time. Water the space between the pots so the inner pot can wick moisture as needed. To avoid terra cotta pot dry out, simply place a smaller plastic pot inside a larger terra cotta pot. Same look, more moisture retention.Pro Tip: Adding one inch of gravel in the bottom of the pots helps with drainage.Growing in PotsConsider Sun: Most crops require 6-8+ hours of sunlight per day, crops like lettuces will grow with 4-6 hoursWater: Keeping soil moist but not soggy is essentialWater must be able to drain out! Plants hate soggy feet!Soil: Vegetables need rich, nutrient-dense soil. Source vegetable potting mix (not seed starting, not raised bed mix) for growing vegetables in containers. Fertilizing: Container crops can deplete the nutritional content of their soil quickly. A 2-4 week fertilizing program is recommended. Research which nutrients and fertilizers those crops require… lemons do not need the same food as tomatoes, blueberries need acid, etc.Container Appropriate CropsLook at compact varieties (18-24” for bushing varieties)Corn: Tom Thumb has small cobs, grows to around 36” tallTomato: Early Girl, Red Rocket, Tiny TimPeppers: Almapaprika, Habaneros, some Chili varietiesGreen mixes such as mesclun, tatsoi, oak leaf lettuceStrawberries grow well in gutters and flower boxesEspaliered fruit treesMeyer lemonsOther Ways to Grow in a Small SpaceCompanion Planting can save spacePlant shade loving crops like lettuce under tomatoes in potsRadishes can grow in pots with cucumbersHerbs grow well with many crop varieties like brassicasTrellisingGrow up, not out: Keeping tomatoes trained to a trellis in a pot leaves space for more crops around the base of the tomato plant.Succession Planting: Replacing crops that grow from seed to harvest quickly like lettuce allows for reuse of the space for a new harvest or new crop all together.Typically succession planting is a 2-3 week rotationWindow Sill Gardens: Great for growing herbs, microgreens, vegetable scrap gardensPotato Towers: Grow potatoes “lasagna-style” within towers to maximize space and increase harvestsWhich crops for which containers?Recommendations from The Farmers' AlmanacBeans, snapContainer: 5-gallon window boxVarieties: Bush ‘Blue Lake', Bush ‘Romano', ‘Tender Crop'Broccoli

SMALL SPACE GARDENING-COURTYARD STYLE Modern day gardens are much smaller than they used to be. Many gardeners and would be gardeners, hanker for a produce filled garden with as many different edibles  as befits their lifestyle. If you you only have a small space such as a paved courtyard or even just a balcony, but don't know what to do next, this next segment will spur you onto creating your own oasis, without digging up the stones or pavers.  Be inspired Corinne has managed to squeeze in over 200 plants into a small paved courtyard-that doesn't even include duplicates of plants. A good start is with recycling crates from your local council, to give you an idea of what works for you. Alternatively, plant into lots of containers that can be moved around to follow the sun. Then venture into raised garden beds. Making the right choice Before any planting, determine the movement of the sun in your small space and  and note down the hours of sunlight and shade in each part of your small space/courtyard. Choose those edibles that like all day full sun for those spots that get 6 hours plus of sunlight such as tomatoes. Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, rocket, Swiss chard and kale, don't mind a bit of shade throughout the day if your have only 3-4 hours of sunlight.  If you only have morning sun then choose vegetables such as carrots, celery, and dwarf beans. For those spots with morning shade and afternoon sun, the choice is climbing cucumbers, climbing peas and beans.  Soil prep is key for Corinne. Grow cucumbers on a lattice made of string.  The raised garden beds are made up with homemade compost, worm castings and bought in compost and other organic material. Think of vertical spaces Think about growing vines like cucumbers and zucchinis and even nasturtiums, vertically.   Let's find out more by listening to the podcast. I'm talking with Corinne Mossati drinks writer and founder of the gourmantic garden website.  www.thegourmanticgarden.com  Don't be put off by lack of space you may have because no space is too small to have plants, even if it's just herbs on the kitchen windowsill. Full sun - 8 plus hours a day Plant them 2 weeks after last average frost date 1 square foot per cucumber plant Use a trellis - keeps them from rotting, easier to see to harvest Help pollinate - touch middle of first set of flowers Keep watered consistently - mulch - you may have to water daily during peak of summer Use all purpose fertilizer 4 weeks after planting To prevent cucumber beetle - cover young plants with lightweight row covers until they begin flowering and use crop rotation -pick off beetles - use yellow sticky traps Harvest often In segment three Joey and Holly welcome their guest. Wei Zhang is a polymer scientist, engineer, and an entrepreneur with focuses on specialty coatings and green technologies. He is the co-founder of Zynnovation - which is the company that invented Tree Diaper. 1. What is a tree diaper - how does it work? Why should people use it? 2. If you're wanting to incorporate trees into your landscape, what are some things to know before you just plant a tree and do your "good deed" for the environment? 3. What should the average gardener do about their own moisture retention capabilities? If they feel their soil is too porous, what can they do to improve it? 4. What is green infrastructure? How can someone implement that in their garden or in their backyard? 5. How can people find out more about tree diaper? In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardener's questions Q: Our neighbors shared some cow manure that they got from a local farmer. It doesn't appear to be what they call green. I'm just thinking maybe adding over the top of our soil and tilling it in now. We won't plant until near the end of May. Some articles say to be really careful with manure, so just worry if it's a good idea to use - don't want to burn up our plants? My other question is when using Cornmeal for Tomatoes, do you add to the bottom of hole when planting or sprinkle on top of soil around the plant? A: That manure could possibly burn your plants and it looks still too fresh, you could put it in a pile and let it break down over summer and add it in the fall or wait til next spring. It seems too risky right now. Cornmeal you just sprinkle around the base of the plants once its planted. On top of the soil. There is no doubt about it, during these stressful times of quarantine, shelter in place orders and social distancing, more people have turned to their gardens. Maybe as something to pass the time, to relieve some of the stress, or as a way to get some physical exercise. But as the country is itching to get back to work and ready to venture out, will this interest in gardening be sustained once we return to our normal routines? After speaking to many green industry professionals, there seems to be a consensus that we will all experience a new normal. Even if this pandemic ended today, it's going to take a long time for the engine that drives our food supply and economy to get back to where we were before this all started. So there are many reasons to think that we could still see people turning to gardening for growing food, relieving stress and feelings of depression, as well as physical activity. On this #plantchat episode, I asked well-known garden expert Melinda Myers, a television and radio host, what she thinks on the topic and why she feels so many have turned to gardening. She has written over 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening and the Midwest Gardener's Handbook. And she also hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD series, and the nationally-syndicated, "Melinda’s Garden Moment" TV & radio program. Dig, Plant, Grow A lot of people from all ages, would like to start gardening but don't know where to begin This new series called ‘dig, plant, grow' is all about starting a garden either from scratch or perhaps you've inherited a garden and want to know what to do.  In either case you'll be doing some digging. My own garden in the rain: photo M Cannon Let's find out how to start.  I'm talking with Glenice Buck of Glenice Buck Designs www.glenicebuckdesigns.com.au  Glenice suggests digging a BIG hole! Yep, 50cm deep if you can go that far without hitting bedrock. Not  for the faint hearted. this gives you an idea of what soil layers and textures you have. Add a bucket of water to the hole to see how fast it drains away. This is testing the drainage of your soil. You can't change climate, aspect, soil texture and drainage of your soil, but it pays to know what you're dealing with. Glenice runs her workshops in Young, however there are similar workshops in all capitals and regional centres. Check out your local newspaper for more information.  For example, Sydney Community College runs a workshop which covers those topics called Small Space Gardening, which I run. It's on a Monday evening.  For all the latest news - Follow Glenice on Facebook or Instagram  Facebook : www.facebook/glenicebuckdesigns  Instagram: Glenice_Buck_Designs  Or check out the website: www.glenicebuckdesigns.com.au  Or Subscribe to the monthly Garden Greetings Newsletter: www.tinyletter.com/glenicebuckdesigns

This is a topic that was requested by our friends in Boston, Mass.! They wanted to know how people in the city that don't have much land can still grow food. Here are some techniques that you can use if you have limited space where you live. First thing you should do is find out what kind of plants you want to grow. What do you eat? What USDA zone do you live in? Will what you want to grow survive in your area? Once you have determined if the plant you want to grow will survive in your area, then look for small varieties (like tophat blueberries). If you want to get fruit trees then get dwarf varieties. The columnnar Apple will set fruit on a single vertical stick. No branching means very limited space needs. You also want to look for plants that have a quick turnaround, meaning from planting to harvesting is a short amount of time (radishes for instance). Take advantage of the vertical space on your balcony or small backyard. Use trellises to grow plants vertically. Plant companion plants together in a pot so you can get up to three different harvests from one pot. Use window boxes to plant outside of windows, or use window boxes on the outside rail of a balcony. You can also layer your plants in front of your window. Meaning put short plants on the windowsill, then put tall plants behind those on the floor, and hanging plants from the top of the window. Hanging baskets are a great way to free up floor space! There are many edible houseplants that you can use such as citrus or dwarf bananas. To the person who is serious about growing food at home there are many ways to grow your own healthy produce. Please consider supporting the show at www.patreon.com/havenhomesteadYou can find this episode plus all our past episodes at www.havenhomestead.comThanks for listening!
