Beyond “Can My Kid Watch This?” with Brett McCraken

Every story is shaping us. Movies, television, books, music, and digital media do more than entertain. They work on our imaginations, stir our affections, and quietly influence what we love, admire, fear, and desire. So how can Christian parents help their children engage culture thoughtfully without falling into either fearful rejection or uncritical consumption? Brett McCracken, author and senior editor and director of communications at The Gospel Coalition, joins Davies Owens to explore what wise media consumption looks like for Christian families. Brett shares how his own love of both the church and the arts led him to spend decades thinking about Christianity and culture, and why discernment requires going deeper than simply checking a movie rating or counting objectionable content. Together, Brett and Davies discuss how stories form us, why even seemingly wholesome entertainment can communicate unhealthy ideas, the value of watching media in community, and practical questions parents can use to spark meaningful conversations with their children. They also use Project Hail Mary as a fascinating example of how Christians can identify themes of grace, sacrifice, virtue, and truth in a story that isn't explicitly Christian. The goal isn't to consume everything, nor is it to retreat from culture. It's to become people capable of recognizing what is true, beautiful, and good while also knowing when something simply isn't worth our attention. If you're raising children in a world overflowing with stories and screens, this conversation offers a thoughtful framework for helping them become wise viewers rather than passive consumers. Classical Christian education often talks about forming students to love what is true, good, and beautiful. But how does that formation actually happen? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens is joined by author, educator, and podcaster Heidi White to explore the formative power of stories. Heidi shares how literature shaped her own life and explains why great books do far more than communicate ideas or teach moral lessons. They awaken desire, give children models worthy of imitation, and help them wrestle with some of the deepest questions of what it means to be human. Drawing from her book The Divided Soul: Duty and Desire in Literature and Life, Heidi explores the tension between what we want and what we know we ought to do, and how that struggle appears again and again in great literature, Scripture, and our own lives. Davies and Heidi also get practical about reading with children. How much should parents explain? Should we protect children from darker moments in stories? And how can we ask questions that invite genuine thought rather than turning every book into another moral lesson? This conversation is an invitation to see education differently: not simply as the transfer of information, but as the formation of loves, desires, imagination, and ultimately, the human soul. What happens when caregiving never ends — when you cared for your siblings as a child, your own children as an adult, and now your grandchildren in older age?In this episode of MissPerceived, Professor Leah Ruppanner discusses Grandmothering While Black: A 21st Century Story of Love, Coercion, and Survival by Lashonda Pittman, a powerful book based on interviews with over 75 Black grandmothers in Chicago raising their grandchildren. Leah unpacks the historical legacy of racism and family separation that shapes these caregiving arrangements today, the difference between multi-generational and “skipped generation” families, and the immense mental load these grandmothers carry while navigating broken welfare, healthcare, and housing systems — sometimes even having to hide the fact that grandchildren live with them just to access resources.Leah connects this research to a much bigger question about care in every country: what do we lose when caregiving is coerced rather than chosen, and what would it look like if systems — not individual women — carried more of that weight?Chapters:00:00 Introduction — a book that stayed with Leah all weekend 02:16 Who is Lashonda Pittman, and what is Grandmothering While Black? 04:35 The historical legacy of removing children from Black and Indigenous families 06:53 Multi-generational vs. “skipped generation” families 08:56 Navigating broken systems: welfare, housing, and hidden caregiving 11:07 “There's no break in the care” — a lifetime of caregiving across generations 13:00 Judy's story: “I'm ready for a life” 13:31 What we lose when care is coerced instead of chosen 14:30 Sweden's approach: care systems designed to free people, not trap them 15:30 A bigger question: why do we force caregivers to trade their ambitions?Resources Mentioned:

Modern education often trains students to absorb information, reproduce it on a test, and move on. But is that really learning? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens talks with Charley Dewberry, co-founder, Academic Dean, and tutor at Gutenberg College, about what it means to teach students to truly think. Drawing from his unusual journey through science, philosophy, biblical studies, and education, Charley challenges the idea that knowledge is simply a collection of facts. Instead, he argues that education should develop the skills students need to perceive carefully, read deeply, communicate well, and pursue truth with humility. Charley explains why we tend to see what we expect to see, how our assumptions shape our understanding, and why encountering people and ideas that challenge us can be essential to genuine learning. He also discusses authorial intent, Great Books, the developmental stages of education, and why younger students need opportunities for curiosity, discovery, and experience before they are ready to wrestle with increasingly complex ideas. The conversation also turns practical. What can parents and teachers do right now? Charley encourages adults to model a love of learning themselves, create room for discovery, listen seriously to those who think differently, and protect time for the kinds of conversations that technology increasingly pushes aside. In an age when information and instant answers are everywhere, this conversation is a reminder that education is about something much deeper: forming people who know how to think, listen, learn, and seek what is true. Return-to-Office Is Pushing Women Out of Work

When employers demand that people return to the office full-time, who pays the biggest price? In this episode of MissPerceived, Professor Leah Ruppanner responds to a listener whose partner is being called back into the office — and whose family is already feeling the consequences. Leah explores what the research says about remote and flexible work, why it became essential for so many mothers' employment during the pandemic, and why return-to-office mandates risk pushing women out of the workforce again. But flexibility is not a simple fix. Leah unpacks the flexibility paradox: working from home can help women stay employed and manage caregiving, but it can also stretch the workday into early mornings, late nights, and an exhausting always-on cycle of paid work, parenting, housework, and guilt. She also explains the unequal career trade-offs families make. Too often, women make career compromises “for the family,” while men are encouraged to accelerate their careers as breadwinners — even when both parents genuinely want more time with their children. The result is a gendered mental load, unequal long-term earnings, and a system that asks mothers to hold work and family together at once.Chapters:00:00 A listener asks: What happens when a partner is called back to the office?01:30 Why return-to-office mandates can hurt women's careers02:20 Before COVID, men had greater access to remote and flexible work03:00 The pandemic's “exposure effect” — proving work could happen outside the office04:39 How flexible work helped mothers remain employed06:44 Why working from home is essential — and why it is not enough07:30 The flexibility paradox: a resource that expands the workday09:06 Remote work, maternal guilt, and never being able to clock out10:00 The career trade-offs women make “for the family”11:25 Why men and women often make different work decisions for the same family13:44 Flexible work helps dads care more — without sacrificing their careers14:30 Class differences in who can access flexibility and who faces job disruption15:30 The gendered mental load of holding work and family togetherResearch Mentioned:

Young people today are surrounded by voices telling them to discover their own truth, define their own identity, and create their own purpose. But what happens when the foundation underneath those ideas keeps shifting? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens sits down with Joshua Weir, author of In Not Of: Firm Foundations for Life, to explore what it takes to raise a generation grounded in a biblical worldview. Joshua explains why the increasing individualism of our culture can leave young people searching for identity, truth, and belonging, and why Christian formation requires more than simply protecting children from competing ideas. Parents and educators must help students understand the world as it truly is, reason from biblical truth, and recognize the communities and influences that are shaping them. The conversation also gets practical. Joshua discusses why parents need to model the convictions they hope to pass on, why "because I said so" may not prepare older children to navigate competing worldviews, and how intentional conversations around the dinner table can help children develop the reasoning they will need when parents and teachers aren't there. For educators, Joshua emphasizes the extraordinary opportunity of the classroom. Great Christian education isn't merely about transferring information or attaching Bible verses to a lesson. It's about helping students see truth woven throughout history, literature, art, relationships, and the whole of life. In a culture of shifting identities and competing truths, how can we give the next generation something solid enough to stand on? This conversation offers encouragement and practical wisdom for parents and educators committed to building firm foundations that will last. Lo walks us through his own journey with style and self expression: a love letter to the five-year-old with the Hello Kitty bag. That kid is now the man dressing some of the most recognizable people on the planet.Style, it turns out, was never just fabric for Lo. It was protection. It was survival. Many parents love classical Christian education until one of their children doesn't seem to "fit the mold." Does classical education only work for naturally academic students? Or should an education rooted in truth, wisdom, and Christ be accessible to far more children? In this Summer Flashback, Davies Owens welcomes educator and school consultant Heather Lloyd to explore how classical Christian schools can better serve students with learning differences without compromising academic excellence. Together they discuss what truly defines classical Christian education, challenge misconceptions about rigor, and offer practical ideas for schools seeking to cultivate both truth and love in every classroom. Tune in to hear: Why "rigor" shouldn't define classical Christian education What the "mythical middle" is and why it matters How schools can better serve students with learning differences Practical ideas for creating classrooms where more children can flourish The non-negotiables of authentic classical Christian education Why Charlotte Mason still has much to teach today's educators Whether you're a parent, teacher, administrator, or school founder, this conversation offers encouragement and practical wisdom for building classrooms where every child is invited to pursue truth. As parents, it's easy to believe that everything depends on us. If we just choose the right curriculum, set the right boundaries, or say the right words, our children will turn out well. But Scripture reminds us that we were never meant to carry that burden alone. In this episode, bestselling author and Bible teacher Jodie Berndt joins Davies Owens to explore one of the most powerful, and often most neglected, tools God has given parents: prayer. Drawing from decades of experience as a mother, speaker, and author of the Praying the Scriptures series, Jodie shares practical ways to pray God's Word over our children through every season of life. Rather than treating prayer as a last resort or a religious obligation, this conversation invites parents to see it as a daily relationship with God that not only shapes our children, but also transforms our own hearts. Tune in to hear: Why prayer is far more than asking God for outcomes How praying Scripture gives depth and confidence to your prayers Finding peace in seasons of waiting and uncertainty Encouragement for parents carrying guilt, anxiety, or fear Practical ways to begin praying, even if you don't know where to start How prayer changes us while we wait for God to work in our children Why no child is ever beyond God's reach Whether you're raising toddlers, teenagers, or adult children, this episode offers biblical encouragement to entrust your family to the One who loves them even more than you do.
