Now, in August of 2021, as Dissonance plans on coming back, we release the long-awaited "Best Of" episode! All at once, and unedited (enjoy a minute long conversation about mic placement to kick things off). We sat down with Sarah Billings to discuss their history and journey from being raised in the church to slowly not attending once they moved to Minneapolis. In this episode, they'll talk about the fact that Sarah was raised Lutheran - and Brennen definitely, most likely, probably wasn't - and the landmark changes that took place in the Lutheran church when Sarah was younger that shaped the way they viewed the church through their current views and revelations. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/support

A re-release of a previous episode, with an added portion to the interview. We welcome (back) Umeko Motoyoshi to the show to talk about white supremacy in the specialty coffee world. Umeko discusses with us the issues of labor practices overseas on coffee farms, and here overseas in some of our favorite coffee shops. * It should be noted that at around the 74 minute mark we have cut out the original Q&A and pasted in a new updated Q&A with the same question, only a more expanded answer by Umeko. Then we update each other on what's been happening in our communities in the wake of George Floyd's death and the protests that have erupted all over the world, and how that will affect our coffee community as well. On May 25th George Floyd was murdered by a police officer on charges of a potentially fake $20 bill, while three other officers stood watch and made sure no one intervened. The response by the people of Minneapolis, it's neighbor St. Paul, and the world over was overwhelming and as of this episode being published (June 18th, 2020) still going on. Brennen sat down with his friend Peace to talk about her perspective on George Floyd's death, the protests that came from it, the response by the police and the governing officials, and more. In response to the recent events in our city, The Dissonance Crew has decided to forgo any advertisement for ourselves. It doesn't feel right to make money off of the words and experiences of our black and brown neighbors. Instead, we're taking our monthly earnings from Patreon for the month of June and donating it the Black Lives Matter organization. Please, as we're still reeling from Covid-19, and the death of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Aberu and so many countless others, we at Dissonance encourage you to learn more about black experiences, and black lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/support

In this episode we sit down with Hannah Garcia - a barista and college student - about her experiences of sexism in the church, in her school and at work. We discuss the almost immediate switch that takes place in people's brains when they talk to a woman versus when they talk to a man, sexism on a college campus, and why the coffee industry is so filled with white men. I sit down with my wife, in our home, with our very rambunctious cats, and talk about a prevalent habit of Justine's that stems from toxic masculinity: apologizing too much. Why has Justine learned to apologize so quickly? In this part two of our conversation with Alicia Beyer, we continue talking through the idea of toxic masculinity in the church. Why toxic masculinity is dependent on putting people into boxes, how do we discuss the idea of toxic masculinity with men and women, and how do we address the Bible verses that have been used to justify toxic masculinity for generations. Does the church have a toxic masculinity problem? If so, why? How do we address the idea that the men in the church need to be MEN and that women are often not given a seat at the table? We interview Contessa Johnson to discuss the psychological repercussions of toxic masculinity, and where it stems from. In the episode we'll discuss what happens when men refuse to open themselves up to the human emotions they're feeling and how it affects the people around them. We'll also talk about "covert" toxic men, those people who look and act and speak as if they're "woke" and they're an ally, but when you scratch just underneath the surface you find that they're just as toxic as anyone else. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/last-call-with-brennen/support
Why has the church been rocked with so many sexual assault allegations? What do we do when the institutions we're working for care more about preserving themselves than the people who make up the institution? How do we decide what's more important: the needs of the many, over the needs of the few? We'll talk about all of that and more in today's episode. What is media bias? Why is it important to know about? And how do we detect it? In this episode we talk about the new "post-truth"/"postmodern" world we're living in, where it comes from and why it can be dangerous to see it through to it's entirety. But specifically, how news sources and politicians use postmodern language to create confusion and sell the public their own personal biases as truth. Does truth exist? Is the truth really out there? In this (a very special episode) I talk "off the cuff" about who I am, and what I'm doing. What is Dissonance? Why does it have to have a Podcast? It's sort of an introduction episode, but one that's coming months after the podcast has started. I talk about my story, why I do what I do, and why this podcast came about. I hope you enjoy. Cheers. In this second part of my interview with Trent Johnson, we talk about Social Media and the dangers that it presents. How we could be trading our independence, freedom, privacy and self-determination away for the comfort that Social Media brings, and how our opinions could subtlety be manipulated by people behind the scenes.
