This episode features Geoffrey Mattson, CEO of SecureAuth, joined by co-host Sarah Cicchetti, Director of Product Management at Semperis.Geoffrey has spent decades building and leading companies at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, including MistNet.ai, an AI-native threat detection platform acquired by LogRhythm, and Xage Security, where he drove zero trust adoption across the U.S. military, global energy firms, and Fortune 500 enterprises. At SecureAuth, he leads a platform built around continuous, real-time identity authority across workforces, APIs, and AI agents. In this episode, Geoffrey argues that agents combine the speed of automation with the unpredictability of humans, making real-time per-action authorization the only viable control model. He discusses why “friendly fire” from well-meaning employees is the biggest threat vector right now, how MCP vendors are ignoring their own OAuth spec, and what a practical agent rollout with real guardrails actually looks like. This episode reframes authorization as the problem the identity industry has been deferring for years and can no longer avoid.Guest Bio Geoffrey Mattson is a serial entrepreneur and globally recognized cybersecurity and AI executive with decades of experience building market-defining companies and technologies that protect the world's most critical systems. He is currently CEO of SecureAuth, a leader in AI-driven identity and access management with its Continuous Authority, ensuring ongoing verification across workforces, customers, APIs, and AI agents. This is enabled through its Private Authority Platform, which puts authentication and authorization under your control through any deployment model (cloud, on prem, hybrid, air-gapped).Prior to SecureAuth, Mattson served as CEO of Xage Security, where he led the company in Zero Trust for critical environments from energy to agentic AI. Under his leadership, Xage achieved rapid adoption across the U.S. military, global energy firms, and Fortune 500 enterprises.Previously, Geoffrey Mattson was co-founder and CEO of MistNet.ai, an AI-native threat detection platform acquired by LogRhythm. He pioneered decentralized analytics and machine learning approaches for real-time cyber defense, and later served as SVP of Product at LogRhythm, driving global expansion and shaping the next generation of SIEM/SOAR solutions.Earlier, he held senior executive roles at Juniper Networks, overseeing a $2B product portfolio and leading major M&A efforts, and at Huawei Technologies as SVP and CTO for networking and data center platforms. His engineering leadership at Corona Networks, Caspian, and Bay Networks helped build foundational technologies in network and security architecture.Guest Quote “With agents, you have the power and the speed of an automated process with the unpredictability of a human. And in fact, we are seeing their behavior and their psychology makes them even perhaps less predictable than a human.”Time stamps 01:45 Meet Geoffrey Mattson: Serial Entrepreneur and Cybersecurity Executive 02:40 Why Identity Is Having a Moment 08:40 Defining Agent Identity 12:15 Behavioral Guardrails for Agents 14:37 Agent Identity Lifecycle 17:36 Just-in-Time vs. Standing Privilege 18:02 C-Suite Pressure and Friendly Fires 21:00 When Agents Live Off the Land 26:12 MCP, OAuth, and Token Pitfalls 28:04 Threat Models and Rollout Strategy 30:13 LLMs and Policy Authoring 31:23 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsSponsor The HIP Podcast is brought to you by Semperis, the leader in identity-driven cyber resilience for the hybrid enterprise. In this Word of Life reflection, Fr. Tyler invites us to encounter Jesus at the heart of human suffering. He shares the story of a woman who had been away from the Church for years, yet in her final moments, she desired Jesus—and experienced the fullness of God's mercy. This month's Word of Life—“Stay with us, because it is almost evening” (Luke 24:29)—comes from the road to Emmaus, where the risen Jesus walks with discouraged disciples and transforms their darkness into hope. We are invited to make this prayer our own, especially in times of confusion and suffering: “Stay with us.”

Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Dr. Craig Mattson, professor of communication and author of Digital Overwhelm: A Mid-Career Guide to Coping at Work. Rather than encouraging digital detoxing or escaping technology, Craig offers a refreshing way to understand and navigate the pressures of modern work. He introduces the idea of digiwhelm, explains why so much of our stress comes from the communication modes we inhabit, and shows how leaders can respond with intention rather than overload. You will hear Craig describe why email can be more than information transfer, how mode switching differs from context switching, and why one-way communication sometimes matters more than dialogue. Craig also shares why signals like silence, gestures, and tone often communicate more than words. Before closing, he draws connections to life at home, offering ideas for families that feel overwhelmed by devices and demands. If you are looking for practical insights to reduce digital overwhelm, improve communication, and lead with greater clarity and calm, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "Instead of digital minimalism, I recommend something like digital flexibility." "Humans are essentially users and switchers of modes." "What is going to be the defining overwhelm of my life?" "You are always overwhelmed by something." "Flexibility is the wisdom that my book is urging." "Your words do things." "Think about the voice of the email." "A mode is an approach, it is a posture, it is a way of relating." "Is there a way in which this is actually good for me and actually good for other people?" Trio Flux is the collaborative effort of Portland musicians, Neil Mattson (guitar), Julio Appling (bass), and Adam Ochshorn (drums). The trio brings together a wide array of musical moods and textures, stretching the bounds of the traditional guitar-bass-drums jazz trio. In 2015 Ochshorn passed away and the group went on hiatus. Around 2022 Mattson and Appling started working on a record of compositions that their friend and bandmate had left behind. I chatted with Mattson and Appling about their relationship with Ochshorn and their experience of making this record in tribute to their friend. Jeremy Au and Jordan Dea-Mattson reconnect to explore how Vernor Vinge's Rainbows End anticipated today's world of accelerating technology, reskilling challenges, and demographic shifts. They examine which predictions came true, which fell short, and how these lessons apply to AI adoption, fragile digital systems, and the need for lifelong learning. Their conversation highlights why individuals must build meta-skills, why policymakers lack playbooks, and how Southeast Asia can prepare for a future shaped by both singularity and depopulation trends. 00:41 Tech change accelerates beyond generations: Vinge showed how skills like programming quickly became obsolete, leaving workers structurally unemployed. 07:27 Reskilling mirrors today's digital divide: Characters were pushed back into classrooms, similar to how older workers struggle with cashless systems and SaaS adoption. 11:56 Rogue AI foreshadowed safety debates: Vinge hinted at AI bargaining to survive, connecting to current AI alignment concerns. 13:58 Belief circles resemble online echo chambers: Communities overlapped with reality, much like radicalization on forums and social platforms today. 18:29 Trust collapses with fragile systems: A single broken security certificate caused global chaos, resembling real-world failures like the CrowdStrike outage. 38:19 Singularity defined as break point: Jordan explains the mathematical roots of singularity as the moment when definitions collapse with exponential change. They discuss why you need to contemplate what you eat and use all five senses when you taste. Barb: We do a lot of critical tasting of wine, yet we don't necessarily do the same of food. The Pirates blew a 3–2 lead and fell to the Cubs, 4–3, in a bullpen game where Carmen gave them 4 innings of 1-run ball before the pen (Holderman → Heaney → a bloop to tie → Mattson in the 8th) couldn't lock it down. Offensively, IKF/Horwitz manufactured a run, but the broader issue remains: not a single Pirate entered the day above league-average at the plate. We dig into bunting/fundamentals, the decision to make it a bullpen day instead of starting Heaney, and what this says about the roster. Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Colin Beazley discuss the state of the club's starting pitching staff and bullpen after their series loss to the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park. With the rotation showing signs of fatigue after short starts by Johan Oviedo, Mike Burrows and Andrew Heaney, plus a few key arms like Dennis Santana and Isaac Mattson taking on new roles in the bullpen, Noah and Colin debate if adding more young arms into the mix could help solve both problems. What about highly touted prospects in Triple-A like Bubba Chandler or Hunter Barco? What should the rest of the season look like for young arms like Carmen Mlodzinski, Braxton Ashcraft and Kyle Nicolas? What about veterans like Dauri Moreta and Ryan Borucki? Noah and Colin answer those questions and more.
Mark Mattson, founder of an $11.5 billion investment advisory firm managing wealth for 35,000 families, delivers a masterclass in separating investing truth from financial noise in this compelling conversation about wealth creation, market efficiency, and reclaiming the American Dream.Mattson cuts through the clutter of internet investment gurus with refreshing candor: "What investing takes—and getting in shape takes—is work. A crap ton of hard, serious work." In an age where financial advice is abundant but results are scarce, his focus on evidence-based investing principles offers a stark contrast to the get-rich-quick schemes flooding social media. The discussion explores a counterintuitive approach to wealth building that prioritizes creating value for others first. "If you want to create the American Dream for yourself, help other people create their American Dream and then you won't have to worry about yours," Mattson explains. This perspective shifts the focus from entitlement to contribution and provides a framework for sustainable prosperity.Mattson dives deep into portfolio construction, making a compelling case for broad diversification across asset classes, geographies, and company sizes based on academic principles like Efficient Market Theory and Modern Portfolio Theory. He methodically dismantles arguments for concentrated investing, warning that "there's no better way to go bankrupt fast than to dump your money in three or four or five stocks." Instead, he advocates for a disciplined approach that removes emotion from the investment process through systematic rebalancing. The conversation tackles controversial topics like cryptocurrency (which Mattson calls "one of the most toxic investments"), political biases in investing decisions, and the challenges of building a company culture with urgency and purpose. Alec, JJ and Mattson's discussion centers upon Stanley Kubrick's seminal 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket," wherein we conduct an exhaustive analysis of its dual narrative structure, comprising the harrowing boot camp experience juxtaposed against the chaos of the Vietnam War. We dissect the profound impact of R. Lee Ermey's portrayal of the drill sergeant, which many believe singularly elevates the film's initial act to an unparalleled level of cinematic excellence, yet we lament the subsequent decline in narrative cohesion and engagement in the latter half. The variance in pacing and thematic exploration between the two segments prompts us to contemplate Kubrick's artistic choices and the efficacy of his directorial vision. Throughout our discourse, we reflect upon the film's commentary on the dehumanization of soldiers and the moral complexities intertwined with the experience of war. Ultimately, we arrive at a consensus that while the film remains undeniably significant, its bifurcated nature invites a myriad of critiques regarding its overall effectiveness and lasting legacy.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

For decades, Big Food has been marketing products to people who can't seem to stop eating, and now, suddenly, they can. The active ingredient in new drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound mimics a natural hormone that slows digestion and signals fullness to the brain.Around seven million Americans take these drugs, but estimates from Morgan Stanley suggest that number could increase to 24 million within the next decade. More than 100 million American adults are obese, and the drugs may eventually be rolled out to people who don't have diabetes or obesity, as they seem to tame addictions beyond food — appearing to make cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes more resistible. Research is at an early stage, but the drugs may also cut the risk of stroke, heart and kidney disease, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.Major food companies are scrambling to research the impact of the drugs on their brands — and figure out how to adjust. But for Mattson, which has invented products for the nation's biggest food conglomerates for nearly 50 years, the Ozempic threat could be a boon.
