Bakker is back, and he wants you to argue better! "Can't we all get along?" sounds like one of the most naive questions in the world, but in truth, it's one of the most Christlike things we can do. Our guest Jay Bakker, punk-rock pastor, author, and independent scholar, has long been a champion of arguing well, giving others grace, and also calling out intolerance--both on the right and on the left. In this conversation, we dig into what is going on in our country, the deep and wounding polarization, and the lessons we can learn from how figures ranging from Paul to MLK Jr to John Hume to our beloved Tammy Faye (Jay's mom) found a foundation for dialogue in the midst of the conflicts of their times. Jay Bakker is the pastor and founder of Revolution Gathering (https://revolutionchurch.com/), a radically inclusive online community of believers and seekers who want to do church in a way that fits their values, without the partisanship and division. He's on YouTube with his latest message every week--go watch, like, and subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/@revolutionbroadcasting! Jay is also the author of "Son of a Preacher Man", which recounts his experience growing up as the son of famed televangelists Jim and Tammy Bakker, and the more recent books "Fall to Grace: A Revolution of God, Self & Society" and "Faith, Doubt, and Other Lines I've Crossed." Bakker then preached at Revolution's Atlanta location before pastoring the New York City branch of Revolution Church, which held services at the bar and venue Pete's Candy Store, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn until Bakker relocated to Minneapolis in 2013 and began pastoring another iteration of Revolution Church there. The return of Jay Bakker, punk-rock pastor of Revolution Church, author, speaker, and son of famed televangelists Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye (Bakker) Messner. Jay blasts open the idea of a right/wrong side of the partisan divide, arguing for a radical and very literal acceptance of "Love your Enemy." It's an energetic adventure through the Book of Galatians, and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, John Hume, Gahndi, Paul Tillich, and other thinkers and philosophers as we discuss how those on the right AND the left turn their beliefs into law for the others to follow, instead of trusting Grace and finding common ground. A fantastic and much-needed talk for our times!

David Boice of 52 Churches in 52 Weeks Talks LDS Experiences! After a string of bad first dates and no church to call home, Dave Boice chronicles his yearslong spiritual journey in search for something more on YouTube and in a book. What started as a simple endeavor to find a hometown church turned into a thrilling spiritual adventure that is sidesplittingly witty and deeply emotional. Of note, David had some unexpected experiences attending two church services of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is still processing it and discusses it with Steven Pynakker of Mormon Book Reviews! From the streets of Manhattan to the beaches of Orange County, Boice explores numerous denominations including Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, Quaker, Greek Orthodox, Christian Science, and other churches. From 20,000-seat megachurches to being the lone congregant at a Scientology service, no building was too big (or as a visit to “The World's Smallest Church can attest) too small. He danced with Pentecostals in Arkansas, immersed himself in prayer with monks that make beer in Massachusetts, worshipped at a Viking church in Wisconsin, and headbanged at a church known for heavy metal music in Ohio. You'll hear sermons from some of Christianity's most widespread preachers (Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes), most intellectual (Tim Keller and Os Guinness), most emergent (Nadia Bolz-Weber and Jay Bakker), to even the most curious (Todd Burpo from Heaven is For Real). Boice's unique undertaking and honest reflection reveals startling epiphanies and insights that will engage both believers and skeptics. 52 Churches in 52 Weeks YouTube channel is a must-see for anyone who wrestles with faith in the 21st century.
On this livestream I'm joined by various people who have been involved with Wake to discuss the unknown in politics, culture and religion. Our guest this week is author, speaker, and cofounder of Revolution Church, Jay Bakker! Jay is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, who were two of the most successful televangelists of all time, and founders of the Praise the Lord Network. They inspired the recent biopic “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” for which Jessica Chastain won an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Tammy Faye. Jay grew up in the shadow of the scandal that engulfed his family, but he has strived to forge his own path, beliefs, and accomplishments apart from the big church infrastructure that he knew as a kid. He co-founded Revolution Church, and adopted a more progressive form of Christian faith – one that isn't afraid of doubt, that denounces the legalism of Evangelicalism, and that offers itself as a home to everyone without conditions. Jay is a bridge builder in a time where we desperately need them, and we had a great time talking to him! You can follow Jay on Twitter and Instagram (@jaybakker), or find out more about Revolution Church at www.revolutionchurch.com. Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y'all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!! I recently saw the movie The Eyes of Tammy Faye and quickly went down a rabbit hole of all things surrounding the infamous televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. I knew I wanted to talk about this (and I did on Patreon, which you can watch here), but I also knew I wanted to explore this topic on the podcast with my buddy Jonathan Merritt. He wrote an incredible article on Tammy Faye for The Atlantic. He is one of America's most popular writers on issues of faith and culture and is the author of Learning to Speak God from Scratch. Tammy Faye 101: Who is she + why should we care? Pre-1960s, there wasn't really any religious TV with entertainment value. Post-1960s, liberalism was on the rise and conservative evangelical Christians didn't like that so they began to use TV as a way to get their message out. Tammy Faye Bakker and Jim Bakker worked for PTL, Praise The Lord. The downfall: Jim Bakker had an affair with a young church secretary. Then it came out that Jim was bisexual. The ministry also had a lot of shady dealings when it came to money. He served 5 of 45 sentenced years in prison. Tammy Faye eventually divorced him and married a real estate developer. She became one of the most hated figures in mainstream media, but was a gay icon. “Why is she being punished for the sins of her husband?” - Kat Harris Where did we go wrong + how do we be better? Women paying for the sins of men is not a new idea and was certainly not unique to Tammy Faye or that era. This trend goes all the way back to Genesis 38 with Tamar. People have been hurt by religion… so they typically outsource that hurt to whoever is in the spotlight. It's valid, but misapplied. We project feelings like “you should never disappoint me” onto religious people in the spotlight, and once they do disappoint you it feels like betrayal. Tammy Faye died of cancer and the day before she did, she forgave everyone. “The gay community, and now Hollywood, is doing the job that the church never did.” - Jay Bakker Resources Keep up with Jonathan Merritt at jonathanmerritt.com, on IG at @jonathan_merritt, Twitter at @JonathanMerritt, or Facebook at @JonathanMerrittWriter. Joe Pomeroy is a businessman, speaker, and author. Today, Joe shares how he came to the end of himself when his marriage was breaking down, what he did to get help, and how he learned to accept grace. Now, Joe helps men apply what they know from business to their family in order to become the fathers and husbands they want to be. Joe's story reminds us that even when we feel no worth, Jesus still finds us valuable. Listen to Joe's story now! Stories Joe shared: How he became a family leadership coach Growing up in a Christian family in Arizona Realizing the struggle his family went through Feeling like he needed to be perfect and going through shame cycles The moment in his early 30s that changed his view of righteousness How his marriage began breaking down Feeling like he was pushing his wife out Having a “man-sized tantrum” about something he cannot remember now Realizing he needed help Learning how to accept himself as he is Discovering how to run a family like a business Using the principle of ROI Trying to create a business around business and family Great quotes from Joe: Now I recognize there is power in vulnerability. Most of the time, I wasn't in darkness. I was in shadow. When we put ourselves in the right place, we're able to be an instrument of God for others. I believe that all truth belongs to He Who Is the Truth. Every day we deserve love because God has declared it so. He lives in Seattle, Washington, and is pastor of Revolution–a Christian community for those often rejected by the church that has met anywhere from bars to bowling alleys to homeless shelters. He is an author, a speaker, a pastor, and a father. Follow Jay and Revolution on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. You can listen to his church's podcast, Revolution Church, anywhere you find podcasts. This midweek bonus episode is a crossover with The Sacred Collective podcast. Our own Brien Aadland--pastor of the group that meets at Bryant-Lake Bowl on Sunday mornings in Minneapolis: known first as "Revolution Church"; then as "Revolution Church Minneapolis"; and now, "The Doubters/Believers Alliance"--interviews influencer Milo Winslow, for an episode of The Sacred Collective. Milo and Brien discuss similarities and differences in their experiences being raised in conservative subcultures of the midwestern United States, including their shared background as curious children raised in Pentecostal Christian churches. Both were inquisitive, intelligent kids, turned off by the arrogant attitude possessed by the popular Purity Culture of the 90's. Milo and Brien also share the sentiment that their experiences interacting with proponents of such one-dimensional thinking were often traumatic for much of the youth which they targeted.Milo grants Brien's request to help spread education and awareness about the challenging journey of embracing an identity as a gender-queer person. Milo elaborates on the nuances that surround facing that experience in both religious and non-religious settings which are ignorant to the challenges surrounding coming to terms with this very personal and often misunderstood personality trait. After editing this episode, Caleb told Brien how much he enjoyed just hearing the conversation, and how proud he was to be a part of Sacred Collective and Revolution both. He also told Jay about this episode, and how well it would fit in with the rest of Revolution's content, and asked Jay if they could use it as a bonus episode this week!(Jay said yes, so here it is!!)We should have at least a few more Meet Your Congregation episodes on some coming Wednesdays very soon, but have had to slow down a bit with the production schedule, as they sort through some heavy personal issues (which will definitely bleed through in Revolution's content sooner than later, as all things do when your work is this personal and transparently honest).Be sure to catch Milo on social media: @thatgaymilo; Brien Aadland can be found: @roguetheologian; the podcast this interview was recorded for was started by a small group including Brien and Caleb: @sacredmn; Caleb is facing a full plate-and-a-half right now, but managing to still produce some content: @revolutioncaleb @chromatoneproductions; Jay has also been involved in The Sacred Collective on more than one occasion: @jaybakker; and this is Revolution: @revolutionchurch94.The Doubters/Believers Alliance is the new name for the group that is meeting in-person in Minneapolis, MN at Bryant-Lake Bowl on Sunday mornings. It is now led by Brien, and is the newest iteration of the group in Minnesota that initially met as Revolution Church, under Jay Bakker. Caleb moved to Minnesota and eventually took over production of Revolution (which is now located in Seattle, WA) working for Jay, helping transform The Sacred Collective from a live small group into a recorded podcast and online community. Jay and Caleb are now in Seattle, preparing to launch Revolution in a new form--part live gatherings; part online streaming/recorded content--integrating bits and parts they've developed and refined over the years. Jay Bakker helped found Revolution as a Church in 1994. It was then, and is still now, a community of Grace and Provocation. Pat Green worked as a minister for 16 years before he became a taxi driver. He had joined an Assembly of God church when he was younger, finding mission and belonging, even though his passion for photography was seen as an "idol". He couldn't be himself and so he adopted "personality tofu". Raised by his grandparents from the "silent generation" he inherited their trauma of believing there are just some things we don't talk about. Pat's child came out as belonging to the queer community in 2012 and Pat woke up to that along with seeing Jay Bakker deviate from the standard Christian judgment of that community. Although Pat was growing, those in his Christian community and congregation no longer understood him as he was journeying into affirmation of identities. Pat was tired of everyone having an opinion about his child, so he took a year long sabbatical, got divorced, and stopped believing in 2015. He is now deeply passionate about the rights of the marginalized. His awareness of his own hangups and biases as a cishet white man is one of the things that directly drives his passion. We discuss the essential contributions of all our cultures and photography activism. *** Time Stamps*** 0:55 Monologue 17:57 Announcements24:50 Intro + Interview*****Now that we've begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Caleb gives a talk on the often-overlooked message of radically-unwavering grace, inclusion, and acceptance found in scripture. When we look beyond the church's supplementary expectations and requirements needed for receiving divine grace, we find a much more affirming and welcoming message of inclusion.Recorded on Sunday 20th, 2021 in Seattle, Washington.www.revolutionchurch.com/donatewww.facebook.com/revolutionchurchmn @revolutionchurch94@revolutioncaleb@jaybakkerRevolution is a community of grace and provocation founded in 1994, led by Jay Bakker.Caleb is the assistant pastor, producer, and engineer for Revolution. Jay gives a talk on how we often mirror the negative characteristics that we despise in others, causing us to become that which we hate. It is easy to give power to those who we resent and reflect the traits which we have projected onto them. Instead, if we do wish to practice Christianity, it is essential that we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.Jay and Caleb then respond to and interact with the online congregation watching the livestream, which can be seen Sundays at 11:00am PST at www.facebook.com/revolutionchurchmn!Recorded on Sunday, June 13th 2021 in Seattle, Washington.Revolution is a community of grace and provocation led by Jay Bakker, founded in 1994.Please help support Revolution by donating at www.revolutionchurch.com/donate@revolutionchurch94@jaybakker@revolutioncalebMusic by Andrew Bryant.@magnoliastateThis podcast is produced and edited by Assistant Pastor Caleb Rowe. Jay is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. I first met him 20 years ago in Atlanta, and worked with him at Revolution. We talk about some of the our old days, his struggles (and he's had a lot of those), what it's like to pastor a church while also questioning his faith and doubting, among many other topics. He's had a significant impact on me and I hope you enjoy hearing some of his journey. Music: Christopher Wiitala Edited/Mixed: Erik Linder
*Language Warning* *Mistake made: I misspoke and called Penn Jillette by the name Penn Teller. I realize this sounds very dumb, and apologize* We welcome Pastor and Speaker Jay Bakker onto the Podcast to kick off our Post-Christian series. We talk about how Jay is a pastor who's church is attended by post-evangelicals, post-christians, agnostics and atheists alike, and what he has done to create a church environment that welcomes people who don't fit into the box of "traditional Christian". Along the way we talk about how to have a conversation with people, the benefits of not holding onto your beliefs with an iron fist, and more! What happens when you put an evangelical minister and a lesbian comedian together in a van? An event for anyone who believes that love and laughter can change the world. Jack is Back... and this time we are discussing radical theology! John Jack Caputo is a living legend and top notch philosopher of religion. He comes with faith of Derrida and the Catholic mystical deferral. Today you get to experience a live 3-D event, "Christianity UnCorked." This episode is sponsored by Dr. Laurel Schneider. Thank You Laurel! We appreciate the support! If you missed Laurel's visit to the podcast go check it out NOW! Both Caputo's first, second, and third visit rocked the podcast. Then we shared his main-stage fun from Soularize and the 3D event with Philip Clayton, Jay Bakker, and Peter Rollins. Even more exciting are these class lectures Caputo is sharing here at HBC. These lectures are free theological cat nip for theology nerds. Enjoy. Here's Elizabeth Johnson's 1st and 2nd visit to the podcast. She is the Catholic theologian Jack mentions as the one who got in trouble for attempting to counter the patriarchy in Classical theology. Here's a little Easter egg for all the Homebrewed Christianity Deacons to pop open! It's a little 3-d experience...a bootlegged version of the Homebrewed Christianity 3-D event at Soularize. Since we couldn't get access to the sound board we couldn't get a better recording but thanks be to Bo who has edited the event down an hour and EQ-ed the speakers so you can make out what they are saying. If you want more 3-D excitement just get ready for Jack Caputo's 'what is radical theology?' 3-D experience & Philip Clayton's 'Predicament of Belief' show. Both of those WE ran the sound system and they sound like gold! This podcast begins with Jack Caputo & Philip Clayton wrestling with religion and Christainity. Then Peter Rollins starts to insurrect things and Jay Bakker helps us get our preaching legs underneath us. The podcast ends with the music we used to begin the live event...Jesus and my favorite song writer....BILL MALLONEE. Bart Ehrman is back on the podcast talking about his newest book Did Jesus Exist? Don't worry the answer is YES! In the conversation Ehrman responds to the popular nonsense of the 'mythicists' who attempt to argue Jesus didn't exist. Like Dan Brown's conspiracy theory, the mythicists may get some followers online but they don't have much of an intellectual case and this top notch atheist leaning New Testament scholar is here to set them straight. Of course that was just part of the conversation. We also discuss the apocalypticism of Jesus, Holy Week, fundamentalism, plays the 'name game' with NT Scholars and then answer Jay Bakker's question. It was a real pleasure to talk with Ehrman and we hope you enjoy it and share the Brew! Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community.
