In contrast, he sees long-form platforms as a refuge for depth, nuance, and intellectual honesty. But the bigger conversation goes deeper. As AI-generated text, images, and video flood the internet, we may be entering a post-truth reality—where authenticity becomes nearly impossible to verify. We explore:- Why algorithmic feeds distort perception- The shift from short-form outrage to long-form thinking- The growing difficulty of verifying online content- Whether usefulness will replace truth as the dominant metric- The future of AI-generated media and digital anonymity- What privacy looks like in a world of total synthesisLooking ahead to 2036, Lee and Chris speculate about a world where AI content is the norm, not the exception—and where the ability to discern reality becomes a rare skill. If you care about AI, digital trust, social media, philosophy, or the future of online identity, this episode goes straight to the heart of it.
How do we acquire knowledge? We tend to think that knowledge is produced by experts through established institutions, progressing over time towards a single truth. But Steve Fuller challenges this view, arguing that our contemporary "post-truth" order correctly recognises that the pursuit of knowledge is a socially dependent process, shaped by the communities that produce it.Steve Fuller is Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick, and a founding figure in the field of social epistemology. He has authored dozens of books, including "Post-Truth: Knowledge as a Power Game".Don't hesitate to email us at podcast@iai.tv with your thoughts or questions on the episode! To witness such debates live buy tickets for our upcoming festival: https://howthelightgetsin.org/festivals/And visit our website for many more articles, videos, and podcasts like this one: https://iai.tv/You can find everything we referenced here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this episode, Sadie takes us through two different theories of truth, and what it means for a statement to be true or not true. In using these two theories of truth, we discuss how anti-trans crusaders like Matt Walsh or Christian fundamentalist biblical literalists use bait-and-switch tactics to distort what their followers perceive as the truth. These bad faith arguments can be avoided by avoiding circular logic traps.00:00 - Intro00:47 - Patreon.Com/LeavingEdenPodcast is where the bonus content is!01:30 - Is a hot dog a sandwich?01:50 - We support trans people02:05 - What is a post-truth society?02:20 - Authoritarian populists like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin03:00 - Postmodernism03:44 - The Philosophical Definition04:39 - What is a woman?05:00 - Caitlyn Jenner05:30 - The correspondence theory of truth06:45 - The coherence theory of truth08:30 - Thank you to our wonderful patrons!10:00 - Truth conforms to the entire ecosystem of other things that are true10:10 - What is a sandwich?10:54 - Matt Walsh argues in bad faith12:45 - Bioessentialist transphobia does not hold up to scrutiny13:22 - The King James Bible15:15 - Hateful comments on social media16:10 - The Bible is true because the bible says that the bible is true16:20 - Cult control tactics and brainwashing19:30 - Atheism vs. Religion debate20:00 - Is personal experience evidence?20:55 - Realism and Anti-Realism22:22 - anti-realism23:58 - Big questions24:38 - Color theory25:18 - Berlin and Kay's theory of Basic Color Terms26:58 - WHAT COLOR IS SADIE'S HAIR?28:27 - Sadie is the proof30:03 - John Calvin profile pic30:53 - Sadie once had a man31:08 - Capitalism is the root of all christian misogyny (not actually)33:38 - What is proof?36:04 - Are we living in a simulation?Subscribe to Leaving Eden Podcast on YouTube!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ4q94gAnsoW2jME4SvVrrQJoin our Patreon for extended, uncensored, and ad-free versions of most of our episodes, as well as other patron perks and bonus content!https://www.patreon.com/LeavingEdenPodcastJoin our Facebook group to join in the discussion with other fans!https://www.facebook.com/groups/edenexodusJoin our subreddit! Young people today are pushing past their skepticism toward religion to reconsider Jesus in a politically charged, post-truth global culture — something Jase witnesses firsthand after a particularly authentic Gospel presentation. Al meets a young man who “loves Jesus but loathes religion,” prompting the guys to consider the very real concerns people have about the ways human sin has affected churches and organized religion. Zach offers insight into what it truly means to be “born again” in an age obsessed with time, trends, and technology. Plus, Jase teaches young husbands how to execute a “pro move” when it comes to giving gifts to their wives. Why curiosity is the best way to start a conversation. No matter how wide political, cultural, and generational divides seem to grow, Fareed Zakaria is convinced: communication has the power to connect.Zakaria is the host of CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, a Washington Post columnist, and author of Age of Revolutions, a book about the seismic societal shifts that define modern history. In his decades of translating complex geopolitical issues for broad audiences, he's found the key to navigating change and conflict. “The most important thing is being genuinely curious,” he says, “genuinely believing that everybody has a story to tell. Everybody has something to teach you. Everybody has a lesson you can learn.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Zakaria and host Matt Abrahams explore how curiosity opens the door to conversation. Whether we're communicating across ideological divides or bridging gaps between our past, present, and future, Zakaria shows why maintaining connection starts with a willingness to learn.Episode Reference Links:Fareed ZakariaFareed's Book: Age of Revolutions Ep.161 Do Your Homework: Know What to Say by Knowing Who You're Talking To Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:27) - The “Age of Revolutions” (04:33) - Do Facts Still Matter? We are living through a crisis of clarity. In the name of empathy, we have untethered compassion from truth, traded moral courage for slogans, and reduced identity to something endlessly self-constructed. The result is not freedom, but confusion, where words lose meaning, conviction is treated as cruelty, and the church often responds with language that sounds kind but forms no one. This week on Win Today, apologist and author Abdu Murray joins me for a sober, unflinching conversation about self-creation, gender ideology, and the liabilities of a post-truth culture. We examine how empathy becomes destructive when it is severed from reality, why identity collapses when it is built on feelings alone, and how the church's reliance on syrupy slogans leaves believers ill-equipped to engage the moment with wisdom and courage. This isn't reactionary, it's diagnostic. If you sense the ground shifting beneath basic definitions of personhood, truth, and meaning, this episode offers clarity without cruelty and conviction without caricature. Guest Bio Abdu Murray is an author, speaker, and apologist who explores the intellectual credibility of the Christian faith in a post-truth world. With a background in law and years of experience engaging questions of identity, meaning, and worldview, Abdu is widely respected for his clarity, charity, and ability to address complex cultural issues with reasoned conviction. This week we're taking stock of conversation trends to let it rip on AI market jitters and what happens when the math stops math-ing.We start with the numbers that have investors nervy: Amazon's $200 billion capex projection for 2026, and the uncomfortable reality of building an entire economy on depreciating GPU infrastructure with a three-year shelf life. Why the dot-com bubble comparison are incomplete, and questioning what happens when billions flow into overwhelming into transformer model architecture while research into others starves. Then we shift from market corrections to attention economics, unpacking how AI tools promise productivity while actually training us to outsource thinking itself. The cost is both financial and experiential. When was the last time you sat alone without reaching for your phone? Can you still read sentences that run four lines long? The episode lands on an uncomfortable question about who gets to have unmediated experiences anymore, and whether we're living our own lives or just consuming other people's.Mentioned: Ed Zitron 's “Better Offline” podcast Derek Thompson's Plain English podcast interview with Paul Kedrosky on market conditions and signs of a bubble Stephen Colbert on “truthiness” Enshittification, coined by Cory Doctorow MIT on the philosophical puzzle of AI Netflix's main competition is sleep Point of view: Gen Z will remember more of other people's memories than their own Blaise Pascal writing about attention in 1670
We may live in a post-truth society, but facts can still be verified. Michael Shermer is publisher of Skeptic magazine, the executive director of the Skeptics Society and the host of the podcast The Michael Shermer Show. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss misinformation and how to spot it, why we're vulnerable to believing falsehoods and why it's essential we reject the idea that nothing can be verified as truth. What does it take to build trust at the scale of billions? In this episode, Patrick sits down with Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and author of The Seven Rules of Trust, to unpack how one of the internet's most improbable projects became one of its most trusted institutions. From early skepticism and ridicule to the human systems that made collaboration possible, this conversation explores how trust is built person-to-person, how purpose creates alignment, and why Wikipedia succeeded where so many platforms failed. This is a deep dive into the architecture of trust — and the foundations of building something that lasts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode, Meghan talks with science writer and professional skeptic Michael Shermer about his new book Truth: What It Is, How to Find It, and Why It Still Matters, and about why agreeing on basic facts has become so difficult, even when everyone is looking at the same video. They discuss Minneapolis, ICE raids, viral "exposé" culture, the transgender movement, the lab leak theory, the Jeffrey Epstein case, the way activism distorts institutions that are supposed to care about evidence, and why humans are much better at defending beliefs than revising them. Note that this episode was recorded on January 20, four days before the killing of Alex Pretti during ICE protests in Minneapolis. We discuss the killing of Renee Good. Guest Bio Michael Shermer is the Founding Publisher of Skeptic magazine and the host of the podcast The Michael Shermer Show. This episode is for the person who knows nothing about philosophy. I have been coming back to this conversation all year, you will be shocked how postmodernism has infected every part of our daily life and culture. The episode features a conversation between Florencia and Bobby Angel, author of the new book "The PostModern Predicament", focusing on the impact of postmodernism on faith, reason, and human dignity. They discuss how postmodern philosophy has influenced culture, politics, and personal beliefs, often leading to a subjective view of truth. In this episode:

We live, my fellow Americans, in the greatest nation in the history of mankind. There is not, nor has there ever been, a nation like:THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.Never.It is a nation conceived in freedom. It treasures and fosters democracy. It is a constitutional nation, and it is a nation where, as Dr. Martin Luther King so well said, if in fact its citizens live up to its constitution, treasure it, believe in it, and enforce it, all men and women who are created equal can live a life to the fullest.AMERICA. What is America to you? Do you understand your country, your nation, its history, its purpose and meaning, the reality of the:REAL AMERICA?Do you? Right-thinking men and women thank God every day, EVERYDAY, for the privilege of living in America and being an American. Do you? Are you a grateful citizen, are you proud to be an American, and since this great country can do so much for you, remember the words of President John F. Kennedy, who admonished us to:ASK NOT WHAT AMERICA CAN DO FOR YOUASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR AMERICA!That in my opinion should be the motto of every real American.THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION. Please read it. Do your best to understand it. Study anything which helps you understand the incredible rights, privileges, and duties which are yours as a citizen and as an American. Think always about the First Amendment to that Constitution, perhaps the finest words, rights, privileges, opportunities, and expressions of freedom ever written in the history of mankind. The First Amendment of America's Constitution allows you full and unabridged freedom of:RELIGIONSPEECHPRESSASSEMBLYPETITIONThese precious freedoms are the very best that can be offered to any human being and they are essential, priorities, GUARANTEED to every man and woman by this Constitution and its very precious First Amendment. Read it, know it, treasure it, and thank God for it.RULE OF LAW. It is watered down, ignored, or even eliminated in this woke and radical, anti-American day and age. Lawlessness in the end times, says the scripture, prevails and runs rampant. That is happening today. Stand up, my fellow Americans, to lawlessness and insist upon the rule of law, insist upon the concept of:JUSTICE FOR ALL.There is risk in so doing, but the reward is well worth the risk.RIGHT AND WRONG. There are those today that think there is no such thing as right and wrong. There is no absolute truth. This is the day and age of:THE LIE.We live in an age which many describe as:POST TRUTH.That is, we live in a culture where there is no such thing as absolute truth and consequently, the lie, that which is not truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, is the law of the land. WRONG, dead wrong. There is right and wrong, there is truth, and never forget in this great year 2026, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ:I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE!I AM THE TRUTH!Believe in Him and you will know the truth indeed.STAND. Stand tall for America. Protect it. Founding Fathers were willing to die for it. Are you? Am I? Are there enough Americans left who are willing to do whatever is required to protect and defend the greatest land in the history of mankind? So much of the world despises, even hates America. Perhaps that is because we live hypocritically, we do not stand tall for our ideals, our freedoms, and our way of life, and we are not consistent, constantly compromising, and so often not holding individuals and nations accountable for their actions. We the People need to redefine who we are as a nation, make those ideals, values, and standards clear, and stand for them no matter the cost, now more than ever in the great year 2026.POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT. We the People need to be far more politically involved. Especially Christian citizens. We need to be active in government. We need to take positions of authority locally and to make certain our neighborhoods, towns, andcities, are safe, law-abiding, and true to American ideals, its constitution, rule of law, and way of life.WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP!We need to make certain right-thinking and right-acting men and women are elected to office, who will truly represent us, and even more importantly, our Constitution, rule of law, and all that America should be.WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT HAPPENS!If not, we need to speak out critically so, aggressively, withhold financing, and our vote, and where necessary, exercise the process of recall and do whatever we can to get elected or appointed officials unworthy of citizen trust out of office and authority.WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!Woke, the progressive, the anti-American: they are everywhere, EVERYWHERE! They are determined to effectuate radical change or even in so many cases, the destruction of the American way of life. They would water down or eliminate much of our Constitution, curtail our freedoms, control family and education, and change the way we live, think, and believe.DO NOT LET IT HAPPEN MY FELLOW AMERICANS, DO NOT LET IT HAPPEN!Time is short. America needs right-thinking Americans in action now more than ever.PRIDE. Be proud in 2026 to be an American. Be proud to be a citizen of the real America, the constitutional America, with its freedoms, and be proud to stand tall as America beckons, asking you now more than ever to be a soldier in the fight for freedom.Wear the flag, salute the military, proudly sing, and respect the National Anthem:STAND UP FOR AMERICA.Pray that God will bless America, convicted of its wrong doings, and once again make it the city on the hill, the shining light among nations, a country safe and protected for us today and for our descendants tomorrow. Let us proudly sing in 2026:GOD BLESS AMERICALAND THAT I LOVE!

In a world of social media, fake news, and deepfakes… how can we know what's true anymore? The phrase “post-truth” has become one of the defining ideas of our time. Politicians lie without consequence, misinformation spreads faster than facts, and many people seem to trust their feelings more than solid evidence. As a result, truth itself seems less influential than emotion or personal belief. In today's episode, we're going to explore what it means to live in a post-truth society…. a society where the line between fact and opinion is increasingly blurred, and where it can feel harder than ever to know what is real. At the same time, I'll introduce some new and useful vocabulary, and we will practice our English listening comprehension! We're living in parallel realities with different "facts." Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales breaks down how trust eroded — and how we might restore it.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1251What We Discuss with Jimmy Wales:Wikipedia succeeded where its predecessor failed because it prioritized making contribution enjoyable. Nobody truly works for free — people need intrinsic rewards like connecting with fellow enthusiasts, intellectual satisfaction, and the joy of building something meaningful together. The global crisis of trust stems from people living in parallel realities with different "facts." Productive discourse becomes impossible when opposing sides can't agree on basic data — like immigration numbers — before debating policy solutions."Assume good faith" isn't just a Wikipedia policy — it's a life-changing mindset. Most people making mistakes aren't malicious; they need guidance. Approaching others with initial trust creates positive cycles, whether parenting teenagers or managing remote teams.Trust isn't built through perfection — it's built through transparency, especially when you have something to hide. Organizations that acknowledge mistakes, explain their processes, and openly work to improve earn more lasting credibility than those claiming flawlessness.Want to make a meaningful impact? Just start. The next five years will pass regardless of what you do — so test your ideas early, embrace potential failure as learning, and remember that trying something that doesn't work still beats endlessly planning something you never attempt. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! This special episode of Rhetoricity features a roundtable that also serves as the "Afterwords" for a forthcoming collection entitled Rhetoric Before and Beyond Post-Truth. That collection is edited by Scott Sundvall, Caddie Alford, and Ira Allen and will be published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2026. The featured panelists are James Ball, Barbara Biesecker, Omedi Ochieng, Robin Reames, and Ryan Skinnell. See below for more detailed bios of the panelists. The roundtable focuses on key questions from Rhetoric Before and Beyond Post-Truth: what we mean by "post-truth," how it intersects with rhetoric, and what challenges that intersection poses for us in the world to come. James Ball is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster, and author, a fellow of the think tank Demos, and the political editor of The New European. Ball also played a key role in The Guardian's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden. He is the author of multiple books, including Post-Truth and The Tangled Web We Weave: Inside The Shadow System That Shapes the Internet. His most recent book, The Other Pandemic: How QAnon Contaminated The World was published by Bloomsbury in July 2023. Barbara Biesecker is Professor of Rhetoric in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Georgia and author of the recently published Reinventing World War II: Popular Memory in the Rise of the Ethnonationalist State. She is the recipient of multiple awards, including the National Communication Association's Douglas Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award, the Francine Merritt Award, and the Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division's Outstanding Mentor Award and Distinguished Scholar Award. She served as editor-in-chief of the Quarterly Journal of Speech from 2013–2016 and continues to serve on multiple editorial boards. Omedi Ochieng specializes in Africana philosophical and intellectual thought, Black radicalism, and criticism. He is the author of two books: Groundwork for the Practice of the Good Life: Politics and Ethics at the Intersection of North Atlantic and African Philosophy and The Intellectual Imagination: Knowledge and Aesthetics in North Atlantic and African Philosophy. He is currently working on a project on Black insurgent ecology. Robin Reames is the Culbertson Chair of Writing in the Department of English at Indiana University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research explores the relationship between language and metaphysics in ancient Greek rhetoric. In an age of deepfakes, algorithms, and moral outrage, Zionism faces new challenges in how it's seen and understood. In this episode, we speak with Rabbi Danny Schiff, an expert on Israel, Jewish peoplehood, and the digital age. We speak about truth, curiosity, and Jewish identity in a rapidly shifting media landscape, and together we explore how Zionism can speak meaningfully to a generation shaped by social media.
Nick David joins Jenna Hays and Amirah David to trace his shift from default left politics to data-driven centrism and a grappling with Christian faith. They unpack everything from COVID era trust, censorship claims, identity politics, free speech, church and state, to the myth of neutrality. The group models disagreement without contempt and ends with a simple challenge - separate people from ideas, prize truth, and keep your courage with grace.
There is an expanding landscape of lies, distortions, and half-truths shaping global politics. The latest instance is the immediate blame heaped on the left for the killing of Charlie Kirk despite evidence that right-leaning attacks are more common. It's one more sign that the line between reality and fabrication is getting blurrier. And as misinformation metastasizes, there are mounting concerns about whether democratic institutions can survive. This episode turns a spotlight on Slovakia, the central European nation that's become a hotspot for post-truth politics. Seven years ago, Prime Minister Robert Fico was forced from power after the execution-style murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée. But Fico made a comeback, formed a coalition with the far right, and now is surrounded by an array of ultranationalist reactionaries, white supremacists and delusional post-truthers. They include Rudolf Huliak, the misogynistic tourism minister; Peter Kotlár, the Covid denier who takes his cue from RFK Jr.; Filip Kuffa, the state secretary for the environment who mocks endangered species; Lukáš Machala, a powerful official prone to flat-earth theories; and his boss, Martina Šimkovičová, an aggressively homophobic culture minister who is putting Slovakia's public broadcaster under political control. That makes Slovakia a key test for the European Commission and for its new Media Freedom Act, which aims to stop political interference in editorial decisions. But whether the Commission will take action remains an open question. Like other leaders of would-be autocracies, Fico uses strategies to feign compliance to throw up roadblocks to enforcement. There are also geopolitical concerns. What if enforcement pushes Slovakia even further into the Kremlin's orbit? That's the wrong question says Pavol Szalai of Reporters sans frontières. In reality the Commission's failure to act would expose Slovakia to yet more post-truth, pro-Russia messaging that weakens the EU's ability to defend Ukraine and itself. In this episode: Pavol describes how the EU can help Slovakia combat a trend that's hobbled media in Hungary, left Polish media in disarray, and that promises to damage media in Czechia if, as expected, the far right comes to power there in October.Support the show
We are living through some wild times.
With conspiracy theories, fake news, and anti-science rhetoric everywhere, we are living in an age of post-truth. In episode 137 of Overthink, Ellie and David discuss the meaning of truth in our contemporary political and social landscape and how post-truth has increased in the recent years. How do phenomena like opinion overload, news fatigue, and information overload contribute to the spread of post truth? And are we really “post” truth, or do we simply live in an age of “many” truths? Ellie and David explore different conceptions of truth, the differences between misinformation and disinformation, and between lying and bullshitting. And what's the connection between post-truth and postmodernism? Have so-called “pomo professors” contributed to the rise of political dishonesty and deception? In the bonus, your hosts talk about Michael Hannon's article “The Politics of Post-Truth” and consider whether “post-truth” is even the right word for the crisis we're facing.Works Discussed: Max Black, “The Prevalence of Humbug”Harry Frankfurt, “On Bullshit”Ralph Keyes, The Post-Truth Era Jean-François Lyotard, The Postmodern ConditionLee McIntyre, Post-Truth David M. The anthology presents a diverse array of essays delving into Gandhi's political activities, ethical beliefs, and philosophical stance. Distinguished Gandhian scholars contribute to this collection, setting it apart from similar compilations by focusing not just on Gandhi's impact or the debate over his relevance, but on maintaining his bold ethical ideals and progressive views in an era of skepticism. The essays delve into Gandhi's comprehensive dissection of political logic, his concept of neighbourly political bonds, his fearlessness and adeptness as a yogi. The work also discusses the worldwide landscape of nonviolence, Gandhi's perspectives on Palestine, his legal work in South Africa, his dialogues with Tagore, the pursuit of his ethical goals, and the portrayal of his persona, as well as the ongoing relevance of his nonviolent resistance methods, as seen in India's anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests. These pieces portray Gandhi as a perpetual participant in limitless endeavours, as described by philosopher James Carse. The book concludes with an interview with Rev. James Lawson, a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement, which offers a fresh perspective. The Gandhi that emerges from these reflections and intellectual explorations has become all but a stranger to India, and especially to his native Gujarat. Learn more about your ad choices. Summary: In this episode, Mike Glenn and Dr. Michael Easley explore the challenges and opportunities facing pastors and believers today. They begin by addressing the deep regrets many carry—especially the regret of not living the life they truly desire—and how salvation is not just about eternity but aligning with Christ's will to live fully now. Mike shares a powerful distinction between wishing and wanting, urging intentional action in marriage, ministry, and personal growth. They discuss the pressure on young pastors to chase bigger platforms instead of faithfully serving their current communities, encouraging contentment and focus on growth where God places you. The conversation highlights the importance of accountability, not as judgment but as loving reminders of who God created us to be. They also emphasize the need for clear, accessible communication in preaching, bridging deep theology with everyday language. Finally, Dr. Easley challenges the misconception that following Jesus means weakness, pointing to Christ's fierce strength in protecting His people and confronting evil. This engaging dialogue offers wisdom and encouragement for pastors and Christians seeking to grow in faith, courage, and purpose in a complex world. Takeaways: Wanting means taking intentional steps; wishing alone won't bring change. Contentment grows by serving faithfully where God places you, not chasing bigger stages. Accountability is an act of love, calling us back to our true identity in Christ. Preaching must balance theological depth with clear, relatable communication. Jesus is strength, confronting evil and defending His people with power Links Mentioned: Preaching in a Post Truth World by Mike Glenn Watch the highlights and full version of this interview on our Youtube channel. Most of us want our politicians to tell the truth. In fact, research from UCL and beyond confirms that honesty is consistently ranked as one of the top values citizens expect from their elected representatives. But is that expectation realistic? Political insiders often argue that politics is a rough game – a competitive arena where playing fair can be a disadvantage. If truthfulness puts you behind, does it still have a place in modern democracy? In this episode, we question whether we've been too quick to abandon truth as an essential political ideal. What do we lose when we let go of it? And is the cost greater than we realise? To dig into these questions, we're joined by Professor Richard Bellamy, Professor of Political Science at UCL and co-author of a new article arguing that truthfulness isn't just desirable—it's foundational to democracy itself.Mentioned in this episode:‘Truthfulness, pluralism and the ethics of democratic representation', by Richard Bellamy and Sandra Kröger. In the British Journal of Politics and International Relations. UCL's Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, human rights, public policy-making and administration. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.

EP 1207 Unmasking Truth: How Dissent Becomes Dangerous in a Post-Truth World In this gripping episode, Richard Syrett dives into the murky waters of truth and dissent with John Schoneboom, author of Stop Me If I Say Something Crazy. Schoneboom exposes how institutions silence dissent under the guise of combatting "disinformation," using case studies like COVID-19, the Syrian chemical attack, and 9/11's Building 7. With sharp wit, he questions whether science and democracy still thrive or if we've traded open inquiry for narrative control. This episode challenges listeners to rethink how truth is shaped and why asking the "wrong" questions can cost you everything. GUEST: John Schoneboom, a novelist, playwright, and former journalist, fearlessly probes the shadows of the post-truth era. His book Stop Me If I Say Something Crazy dissects how dissent is silenced through censorship and narrative control, urging critical thinking over conformity with sardonic wit and intellectual rigor. 80 years after Dietrich Bonhoeffer's execution in Flossenbürg concentration camp in 1945, Rowan Williams reflects upon how his legacy could help the church remain truthful in a post-truth world. In a time of uncertainty, what does it mean to live with courage, integrity, and radical hospitality? Dr Rowan Williams is a poet and theologian, and was the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury.
111 Hz'in bu bölümünde post-truth çağında doğru bilgiye nasıl ulaşabileceğimiz üzerine düşünüyoruz. Right-wing extremism, post-truth America, and media literacy converge in my conversation with David Pakman. Pakman is a prominent political commentator and the host of The David Pakman Show, with over three million YouTube subscribers. Known for his insightful arguments and approachable style, Pakman tackles complex social issues, educating us on the complex and nuanced sociopolitical landscape. Disclosure: I watch his show regularly and was a guest twice. In our conversation, he discusses key insights from his latest book, The Echo Machine: How Right-Wing Extremism Created a Post-Truth America, delving deeply into how decades of deliberate erosion of media literacy and critical thinking have contributed to our current rise into a landscape where fiction parades as the truth. It is a very intelligent, well researched and argued book. I recommend it highly. In this episode, we explored how modern media operates like a high-control group, using subtle brainwashing tactics and influence to shape beliefs and paralyze civic action. We started our conversation with what seems to be at the forefront of everybody's mind: Donald Trump. This was an important interview. Come give a listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Many people today are being spoon-fed on what to think but are seldom taught how to think. It's far easier and less taxing to be told what to think rather than actually going through the analysis that is necessary for critical thinking. How should we go about presenting the hope that's within us in meekness and fear without simply parroting something from our parents or church? Are you capable of seeing the narrative of today for what it is and see if it holds up to the teachings of Scripture?Juan Valdes has written a book that takes the reader through this thinking process. Juan is a speaker with Reasons for Hope. Juan taught high school for over 20 years and has been engaged in apologetics for over 30 years. He's a frequent keynote speaker at pastor, youth and educators conferences. He is author of How to Think: A Crash Course in Critical Thinking. What is critical thinking? What is meant by Post-truth? Juan described critical thinking as the use of all of your mental faculties to help us determine whether something is true or false. Post-truth is relying on your emotions and personal preferences more than objective truth when making decisions. As Juan explains, this post-truth mentality leads to moral relativism. This means that if someone's standard for what's acceptable/unacceptable is based on how that person feels and their personal preferences, then you (and everyone else) must establish your own moral code. Again, this is because life isn't viewed by some through the lens of a moral code where objective facts and rules are the standard. Instead, some people rely on their subjective beliefs, feelings and preferences to take charge.
