This month we're talking about Jewish influencers. What/how are the influencing us, and what trends do we see and like or dislike? “Influencer” can feel like a very shallow field–one that's obsessed with trends and how things look to attract likes, views, followers. So what happens when influencers are speaking from a Jewish space? Raizy […] The post Talking In Shul Ep. 88: Jewish Influencers appeared first on Jewish Public Media.

ZACHOR Question v/s Doubt. Is There A Difference? The mitzvah of Zachor, which we will read this week in Shul, always raises eyebrows: Why are we still stuck on an enemy long gone? Amalek hasn't walked the face of this planet for several millennia by now, so what's the burning passion we still have today to stomp it out wherever we might find it? Amalek today is more than a nation, it's a condition. It's that paralyzing doubt that's freezes you in your tracks, casting aspersions on deeply held truths. Causally invalidating your faith as nothing more than superstition or childish make-believe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mendy-goldberg/support

This is the second week and second part of our most downloaded episode of the OldGuyTalksToMe Podcast. In this episode, I talked with Brian Shul, pilot of the world's Fastest Airplane, the SR 71, and a retired major in the United States Air Force (USAF). He flew 212 combat missions and was shot down near the end of the war. He was so severely burned that he was given no chance to live. Surviving, he returned to full flight status, flying the SR-71 Blackbird. Major Shul completed a 20-year career in the Air Force. After 20 years and 5000 hours in fighter jets, Shul retired from the Air Force in 1990 and went on to pursue his writing and photographic interests. He has written four books on aviation and runs a photo studio in Marysville, California. Near the end of hostilities in 1973, his T-28 aircraft was shot down in the vicinity of the Cambodian border. Recovery from the burns took several months and 15 major operations. Physicians told him he'd never fly again. Months of physical therapy followed, enabling Shul to pass a physical flight and return to active flying duty. Post-Vietnam Two days after being released from the hospital, Shul was flying Air Force fighter jet aircraft. Shul volunteered for and was selected to fly the SR-71. This assignment required an astronaut-type physical just to qualify, and Shul passed without waivers. Shul's comeback story has been the subject of numerous magazine articles conscious and teaching them how to survive such incidents better. In addition to running his own photo studio in northern California, he has authored seven books on flying and flight photography. His first two books (Sled Driver: Flying The World's Fastest Jet and The Untouchables) are about flying the SR-71 Blackbird and give the reader a first-hand account of being in the cockpit of the world's fastest jet. A bit about me (Dr. Orest Komarnyckyj) Dr. Orest Komarnyckyj enjoyed a prestigious career as a periodontal regenerative surgeon moving to a new passion in June 2018. He retired after a 33-year career to pursue new passions. At 70 Dr. Orest has taken on a new role as an Interviewer, Podcaster, and government-certified Old Guy. He streams from his new home in Las Vegas, NV. He lives with his wife of 30 years, Oksana. 1) I realise that my Tallis-Koton is inside out. I take it off and put it on immediately the right way up. Do I need to say a brocho?[1] 2) We have a pre-BarMitzva group. I teach the boys how to bind Tzitzis. Will these Tzitzis be kosher for them once they turn thirteen years old?[2] 3) A novel idea to teach children about the waxing and waning of the moon – to open Sandwich Cookies, and the children scrape away some of the cream, leaving a half-moon or crescent shape. May this activity be done on Shabbos?[3] 4) Is there a problem davening with a picture in front of you, e.g. of the Alter Rebbe on the jacket cover of Lessons in Tanya; of the Rebbe on front of a Lechaim newsletter?[4] 5) Our minyan starts at 6.40am and needs to finish by 7.30am. What should we do when משיכיר gets later than 6:40? (When some calendars allow from 6.45am, Chabad.org time is about 6.52am). Should we rely on earliest opinion? Put them on early without brochos?[5] 6) Is it our minhag to say the verse לישועתך קויתי ה' when one sneezes?[6] 7) Our Sages advocate to have a set place for prayer. The new Israeli government coalition, which aligns with ultra-Orthodox and right-wing extremist parties, is poised to affect major changes on Israeli society, including limiting the Law of Return, delegitimizing non-Orthodox Judaism, and limiting LGBTQ rights. These moves are disturbing on their face, and they also threaten to further alienate Israel from Jews in North America. Will the government's policies undermine Jewish peoplehood within and beyond its borders? Tani Frank, director of the Hartman Institute's Center for Judaism and State Policy, joins Yehuda Kurtzer for a discussion about the place of liberal values and liberal Judaism in Israel and ways that we can affect change in this political environment.
