My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Aaron Ryan, author of the book Forecast. Award-winning and bestselling IMDb-listed multi-genre Christian author, speaker and voice actor Aaron Ryan lives in Washington with his wife and two sons, along with Macy the dog, Winston & Tibbles the cats, and a finch named Fry.   He is the prolific author of over 50 books, including the bestselling Dissonance 6-book alien invasion saga, the dystopian Christian fiction trilogies Carbon and The End, the Talisman epic space opera, the sci-fi thrillers Forecast, The Slide, Blood Echoes, The Darkness Within and The Phoenix Experiment, the nonfiction books God Is Not Santa, You are my whole Earth: A Daddy's love for his Sons, Reflections and You're Going Straight To Helen (In A Handbasket), business guides, literary criticism, 6 kids picture books and more.   When he was in 2nd grade, he was tasked with writing a fiction novella. And thus, The Electric Boy was born: a simple story full of intrigue, fantasy, and 7-year-old wits that electrified Aaron's desire to write. From that point forward, Aaron evolved into a creative soul that desired to write.   He enjoys church, movies, music, biking, books, and being a husband and daddy. In his lifetime he has been an author, voiceover artist, wedding videographer, actor, musician, producer, rock/pop artist, executive assistant, service manager, paperboy, CSR, poet, tech support, worship leader, and more. The diversity of his life experiences gives him a unique approach to business, life, ministry, faith, and entertainment.   Aaron's favorite author by far is J.R.R. Tolkien, but he also enjoys Suzanne Collins, James S.A. Corey, Michael Crichton, Marie Lu, Madeleine L'Engle, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Shel Silverstein, C.S. Lewis, Stephen King and Dave Barry. Aaron has always had a passion for storytelling.   In my book review, I stated Forecast is a speculative thriller by Aaron Ryan. This is a retelling of the fateful day of 9/11. The difference? Roland Bishop.   Roland got struck by lightning and, ever since, he has been able to see the future. He is given visions of people he comes into contact with - and these people are about to die. He ignores the first visions but eventually finds himself trying to change the future based on what he knows. What he doesn't expect is to see airplanes crashing into the Twin Towers and people falling from the sky.   Aaron does a great job with character development. We get to know Roland, but also his therapist, as well as FBI agents, NYC police officers, and even neighbors. And despite having lived through 9/11 as the reader, Roland's visions and what he tried to do about them kept me riveted. I read the book in two days - and I suspect you will, too.   I've never read a speculative, historical fiction thriller before, but I'm glad Forecast was my first! Definitely give this one a try.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Aaron Ryan Website:  https://www.authoraaronryan.com FB: @Author Aaron Ryan IG: @authoraaronryan X: @AuthorAaronRyan LinkedIn: @Aaron Ryan   Purchase Forecast on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4fQlVaf Ebook: https://amzn.to/4woAhnc   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Spirit of God E9 — Our conversation on the Spirit of God is turning  the corner from the Hebrew Bible to the New Testament. The word for “spirit” in the Greek New Testament is pneuma, and like ruakh, it also means “wind,” “breath,” and personal energy related to a person or deity. While all the gospels mention the Spirit of God, or Holy Spirit, Luke is the leader by far with 78 references in his two-part collection of Luke-Acts. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore how deeply the Holy Spirit is integrated into the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.CHAPTERSThe Spirit Filling John and Conceiving Jesus (0:00-17:50)The Spirit Anointing Jesus for Ministry (17:50-32:16)The Spirit Spreads to the Many (32:16-45:02)Jesus Gives Up His Spirit and Receives a New Spiritual Body (45:02-1:02:20)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESTim quotes from New Testament scholar Andrew Remington Rillera's book The Lamb of the Free: “The consistent message throughout the entire NT is not that Jesus died instead of us, rather, Jesus dies ahead of us so that we can unite with him and be conformed to the image of his death.”The Resurrection of the Son of God by N.T. A famous 1950s psychology book said a UFO group grew stronger after its prophecy failed. New records show that story was wrong. The everyday idea of mental discomfort still matters, but it is weaker and more limited than we were taught.

When confessional Protestants begin treating the medieval fourfold sense as a recoverable resource—whether by reframing it as four moods, four sensitivities, or four applications—the need for a clear, sustained defense of the single sense becomes urgent. The confessions already settled the question. Soft retrieval does not revise that settlement; it quietly sets it aside. If pastor and professor Hicks is full/strict (no doctrinal exceptions — a common Reformed Baptist standard), he cannot hold the quadriga without contradiction. A strict signer doesn't get to keep a doctrine his confession denies, and “not manifold, but one” denies manifold sense in plain words. If Hicks is system/good-faith, the honest move is to take an exception to 1.9. But the moment he does, he has conceded the correct 1.9 reading — because you only take an exception to a rule that stands against you. Registering the exception admits the plain words exclude the fourfold sense. Is there a third option?https://x.com/upuritano/status/2090301888340140103?s=46&t=LQtFM-3m0SCDSxEY3sbwIw

Can you solve the mystery?Brad & The Moosh think we're going to celebrate the 100th episode by reflecting on the journey of the show. They discuss the process of choosing songs for the special episode and prepare for a surprise reveal. The episode takes an unexpected turn as Mike throws both of them into a Dungeons and Dragons campaign that stays true to The Cut Music! The two must compile a playlist in an attempt to awaken a sleeping guardian and restore life to the people of Parish Hollow. And the guardian is someone famous. Our poet moves from his scholastic and even (medieval) scientific opening of PARADISO into his invocation . . . to Apollo? This passage has often embarrassed Dante scholars who feel the need to excuse various pieces of it.But we can let those pieces stand as part of the polyvocality of the text.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we move back and forth from the Christian to the pagan as we walk through this second part of Dante's opening lines of PARADISO.Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:11] My English translation of PARADISO, Canto I, Lines 13 - 36. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me via a comment on this episode, please find its entry on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:09] This passage embarrasses too many Dante scholars.[09:14] This passage is polyvocal, a two-part fugue or invention.[17:59] These two voices lead to dissonances in the passage.[23:36] Did Dante intend these dissonances?[25:20] Three small dissonances: Dante crowns himself, fights in an arena, and find his worth in two places at once.[28:32] Marsyas, a comedic tragedy.[32:01] The flame of the tongue, Pentecost, or maybe Ulysses.[34:48] A high-toned, perhaps red-flag reference to Cyrrha.[35:55] An inaccurate but telling reference to Parnassus.[39:07] Rereading the passage: PARADISO, Canto I, lines 13 - 36.

This episode features Drew Hyun and Dr. Jerry Sittser, profiling their time spent with last year's cohort of The Lead Pastor Fellowship. Drew Hyun is the Lead Pastor of Hope Church NYC and Executive Director of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. Drew shares the unpolished version of his own story: growing up a pastor's kid in a Korean immigrant church that split twice before he hit middle school, watching his father go from a harsh, at times violent man at home to a celebrated Christian author and speaker in Korea, and the gap that opened up between his own public ministry persona and a private life marked by hidden addiction and unprocessed rage. He traces how a chance internship exposed him to Pete Scazzero's "iceberg" picture of discipleship, the ten percent above the surface and ninety percent buried beneath it, and how that encounter became the seed of emotionally healthy discipleship in his own life. Drew confesses that it's entirely possible to do ministry for God without God, and that the deepest work of leadership is letting Jesus into the deepest and darkest parts of our hearts. Following Drew, Dr. Jerry Sittser, Professor Emeritus of Theology and Senior Fellow at Whitworth University, teaches on pastoral care through irreversible loss, the kind that permanently changes the landscape of a life. Drawing on his own experience, losing his wife, mother, and daughter in a single car accident, Dr. Sittser rejects the idea of "stages of grief" and other neat recovery paradigms in favor of learning to carry loss for good, being transformed rather than finding resolution. He offers pastors concrete counsel: resist rushing to answers, know which biblical text fits which moment, help people ritualize mourning instead of just enduring it, and help them build a community of people who can shoulder their burdens. In this episode you'll hear:Drew's story of growing up a pastor's kid inside two church splits, including a church fistfight that the LAPD had to break up,An exploration of the phrase: "Jesus may live in your heart, but Grandpa lives in your bones,"Why it's entirely possible to do ministry for God without God, even while seeing real spiritual fruit,Pete Scazzero's iceberg image and how it became the seed of a discipleship model that goes beneath the surface,Dr. Sittser's own story of catastrophic loss, and why he rejects "stages of grief" in favor of integration and transformation,How to discern when to speak and when to sit in silence with someone carrying irreversible loss,Practical postures for walking with people through suffering. PartnersWe couldn't do the work we do at The Pastorate without your generous support. In this episode of The Body GrieversⓇ Club, Bri interviews body image coach and "Body Neutral" author Jessi Kneeland about why body positivity and self-love often feel inaccessible and ignore social context, and how body neutrality focuses on moral neutrality by stripping false, inflated meaning from appearance. Using examples like having a zit, they discuss how body shame spirals come from learned beliefs about worth and failure, and how "health" is frequently used as a socially acceptable cover for body hatred, disordered eating, and orthorexic behaviors. They explore the head-to-heart disconnect, the survival brain's role, the impact of oppression and weight stigma, and how "diet hope" offers false security while body neutrality supports living life despite discomfort.     02:13 Zit Example and Identity 04:38 Orthorexia and Fitness Culture 08:31 Thought Experiments on Health 12:34 Food Shame and Healing 15:57 Moral vs Emotional Neutrality 24:08 Politics Systems and Dissonance 27:47 Head to Heart Disconnect 30:32 False Safety of Thinness 31:34 Patriarchy and Slenderness Trap 33:23 Signs of Body Neutrality 44:41 Beauty Standards and Power 45:41 Complicity and Conscious Choices     WANT MORE OF JESSI? *Buy her book! Why is it that an ephemeral arrangement of sounds can move us to tears, while the exact same sequence might sound like chaotic noise to someone from another culture?Reader in Cognitive Science at Queen Mary University of London and Honorary Professor of Neuroscience at Aarhus University, Dr. Marcus Pearce joins host PJ Wehry to discuss the overlooked significance of our brain's probabilistic predictions.Dr. Pearce explores the computational mysteries of how we process sound in his book, Learning to Listen, Listening to Learn: Music Perception and the Psychology of Enculturation. They examine how our pleasure in music stems from an ingrained psychological drive to predict the future, and how understanding this can help us map out cultural evolution. In this conversation they explore:How our brains act as statistical prediction machines, constantly building internal models to anticipate the next note for an evolutionary survival advantage. The surprising realization that the perception of consonance and dissonance is not biologically universal, as shown by differing reactions in cultures like the Chimane of Bolivia. Why the pleasure we derive from music relies on an "inverted U-shaped" relationship, where a balance between predictable patterns and complex surprises maximizes our enjoyment. The use of interpretable probabilistic AI models, rather than "black box" neural networks, to better understand how a listener's perception matures within a musical tradition. How music acts as a safe training ground for humans to vicariously experience complex emotional states and hone cognitive processes without real-world risk. The role of cultural evolution in music, explaining why groundbreaking, highly complex composers like Stravinsky were initially rejected by audiences before eventually becoming standard repertoire. This is a conversation for anyone interested in cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, and musicology who wants to understand the biological weight behind our favorite songs and how we process the beautifully complex structures of human sound.Make sure to check out Dr. Pearce's book: Learning to Listen, Listening to Learn: Music Perception and the Psychology of Enculturation

You might be wondering: why on earth would I choose a piece that is literally called "Dissonance" when I was looking for something a bit simpler or cleaner to talk about on the show today? Actually, Mozart's Dissonance quartet, probably his most famous and beloved quartet, was not called "Dissonance" by Mozart, and the rest of the piece is thought of as one of Mozart's most outgoing and cheerful works, though I think there's a bit more to it than that. This quartet was part of a set of quartets dedicated to his friend and mentor Joseph Haydn, the father of the String Quartet. Upon their publication, Mozart wrote to Haydn: "Behold here, famous man and dearest friend, my six children. They are, to be sure, the fruit of long and arduous work, yet some friends have encouraged me to assume that I shall see this work rewarded to some extent at least, and this flatters me into believing that these children shall one day offer me some comfort." The final one of this set of six quartets is the one we're going to talk about today, the one that has been dubbed "Dissonance." This single dissonance caused massive controversy in its time, which we'll get to later, but it is a fascinating insight into the rules of harmony at the time. Our sojourns into late Romanticism over the last few weeks, and especially my conversation with Case Scaglione about Wagner and the Tristan Chord, should help us understand the intensely heated debates that arose over that chord I just played you. So today on the show, we'll spend some time on that famous dissonance, then dive right into this glorious quartet, exploring Mozart's unparalleled ability to write the most glorious melodies and the most perfect harmonies. The Authentic Edge: Human Creativity and the AI Frontier with Aaron RyanIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Podcast, host Josh Elledge sat down with Aaron Ryan, the prolific author of the Dissonance, Talisman, and The End Sagas, to explore the critical role of human nuance in a business landscape increasingly dominated by automated systems. Aaron, a multimedia entrepreneur who has published nearly 50 books across multiple genres and serves as a premium voice actor for brands like UnitedHealthCare, shares his perspective on why synthetic generation cannot replicate authentic human connection. This conversation offers a strategic framework for creative entrepreneurs, corporate content directors, and brand strategists who want to future-proof their operations by anchoring their messaging in true, un-copyable individuality. The Architecture of Authenticity: Leveraging Human Nuance Against Automated SprawlRelying entirely on generative artificial intelligence for brand messaging, audiobooks, or corporate content creates a dangerous commoditization trap where an organization's voice sounds exactly like its competitors. Aaron Ryan explains that while algorithms are trained to predict the most statistically probable next word or note based on historical data, they lack the capacity for spontaneous subtext, emotional timing, and authentic lived experience. In high-stakes B2B multimedia and commercial narration, professional voice talent brings subtle breathing patterns and precise inflections that build instant psychological safety and brand credibility with listeners. Furthermore, human creators possess the unique ability to process live, real-time direction during recording sessions—collaborating dynamically to pivot tone, pacing, and emphasis on the fly to meet strict corporate objectives that rigid algorithmic models simply cannot match.Escaping the operational burnout that plagues high-volume content producers requires a disciplined framework of "creative offloading" and systemic workflow diversification. Many founders and authors find themselves trapped by creative blocks because they attempt to pigeonhole their production into a single aesthetic or industry vertical. True scalability is unlocked when an enterprise treats creative diversity as an asset-backed portfolio, mapping out various concepts and capturing raw ideas in a central depository before they are lost to operational noise. By allowing workflows to remain fluid and moving across different formats or genres, corporate creators preserve their cognitive agility and significantly expand their market reach, establishing a natural hedge against shifting algorithmic trends or regional audience fluctuations.Sustaining a premium brand footprint over multiple decades demands that leadership treat technology as an automated assistant rather than an executive replacement. When a business chooses short-term cost cutting by deploying synthetic voices or generic copy for customer-facing touchpoints, it risks long-term talent attrition, lower customer engagement, and a severe erosion of trust. Aaron emphasizes that true longevity belongs to organizations that build strict boundaries around their intellectual property and aggressively cultivate their proprietary points of view. By dedicating strategic downtime to personal development and authentic life experiences, leaders ensure their operational capacity remains charged. The future of market authority does not belong to those who output the highest volume of automated noise, but to those who methodically protect the unique, irreplaceable human element behind their enterprise.About Aaron RyanAaron Ryan is a highly successful independent author, voice actor, and multimedia professional known for his sweeping speculative fiction, including the Dissonance, Talisman, and The End Sagas. With nearly 50 published works spanning science fiction, thriller, poetry, and children's literature, Aaron has established himself as a versatile force in modern independent publishing. He is also an accomplished voiceover artist whose distinct, commanding delivery is featured by major corporate entities and national campaigns across the United States.About authoraaronryan.comauthoraaronryan.com is the central digital hub for Aaron Ryan's literary catalog, voice acting portfolios, and independent creative ventures. By treating advanced tech tools as administrative infrastructure while keeping human emotional intelligence at the center of execution, brands can build deep, lasting trust that commands premium market authority.More from The Thoughtful Entrepreneur

For most of human history, stories were not primarily viewed as commercial products to be sold. Story functioned first as myth, meaning-making, entertainment, cultural memory, and a way of understanding ourselves and the world around us. But in today's marketplace-driven culture, storytelling exists almost entirely within commercial systems—something that inevitably shapes not just what we create, but how we relate to story itself. In this episode, I explore the tension between story as product and story as something deeper, older, and more archetypal. From publishing culture and content creation to commercial pressure and creative burnout, modern storytelling increasingly exists inside systems designed around visibility, productivity, and sales. And although those systems offer real opportunities for writers, they can also subtly reshape not just what we create, but our relationship to the creative process itself. Writers deserve to be supported for their work, and stories deserve to reach audiences. But it's worth examining how the modern entertainment marketplace influences our understanding of story—particularly when success metrics begin to overshadow resonance, meaning, and the deeper relationship many writers feel toward creativity itself. We explore: - Story as process vs product - Commercial storytelling vs archetypal storytelling - The commodification of story - Creative flow vs content production - The relationship between marketplace culture and creative burnout - How writers can balance commercial success with creative wholeness This episode is an invitation to reexamine what story is, what role storytellers serve in society, and how writers can remain connected to the deeper meaning of story while still navigating the realities of the marketplace. Episode Notes The Wedding and the Marriage: On Creative Devotion and the Gift of the Slow Burn What does it actually mean to be devoted to your work — not the version of it you imagined, but the version that wants to exist? In this deeply personal episode, Michael reflects on the six-year journey of writing Resonance: The Art and Science of Human Connection — and the humbling gap between the grand launch he envisioned and the initiation the universe had in store. Recorded live from Tulum, Mexico, just weeks after the book's release, this is a raw and honest meditation on ego, surrender, patience, and what it means to stay in the work when the fanfare doesn't come. What You'll Hear in This Episode: The moment Michael nearly folded after five years — and the four-month ultimatum that changed everything Why he moved to Austin, found the right environment, and finally cracked the book's structure The emotional experience of recording the audiobook and hearing his "composition" for the first time How a crypto portfolio hit by 100% China tariffs wiped out his marketing budget — and what he did next The difference between the wedding (the launch) and the marriage (the lifelong commitment to the work) Why he stopped chasing the bestseller list and started thinking like Ryan Holiday's perennial bestseller What Esther Perel's Mating in Captivity and Steven Pressfield's The War of Art teach us about the slow burn The Miles Davis principle: music is what lives in the space between the notes Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom as a model for creative endurance How the principles of Resonance — listening, devotion, releasing transactional expectation — apply to your creative life, not just your relationships Key Themes: Creative initiation and the fire that forges you Releasing egoic expectation vs. listening to what wants to live The gift of the slow burn and the perennial work Environment as a creative catalyst Dissonance vs. resonance in relationships — and in your work What vision fasts and initiatory rituals teach us about patience and preparation Quotes From This Episode: "It's not about the night of the wedding. It's going to be about the years of commitment in the marriage." "How can I listen to what wants to live — and become an instrument for that song?" "Music is what lives in the space between the notes." — Miles Davis "I wasn't positive how the ideas came together in the most poignant way. But I knew it was in there."
