The failure of Ontario's pandemic response is palpable. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has dropped the ball with what seems like reactionary and nonsensical policy measures from closing down playgrounds, to arbitrary stop and search powers given to police, to permitting Covid hotspots such as construction and warehouses to continue operating. Ontario it seems has has had enough. On Jan 15, 2021, MPP Roman Baber (York Centre) made public a letter to his boss, Premier of Ontario Doug Ford just as Ontario was at the height of its second wave of Covid-19 cases and announced its second Provincial Emergency. Roman Baber is a member Doug Ford's progressive conservatives and argued in his letter for the exact opposite approach: end lockdown. He was fired from his party as a result, and now sits in Queen's Park as an independent. In this episode we explore why he wrote the letter, the politics of opposing your own party and the fallout. We also go into why he believes a lockdown is doing more harm than good. NOTE: Lockdown Toronto is a show that explores aspects of our collective experience in lockdown during the pandemic. Should we immediately build 100KM of cycling infrastructure in Toronto? Janet Joy Wilson and her group organized over 50 groups and organizations to petition the city of Toronto to build 100KM of new cycling infrastructure in the City. Many Cities are rethinking the urban landscape and her group asked the City to take the opportunity and build alternative transportation corridors on our roads to allow cycling and other "last mile" vehicles. That could help establish a safer, healthier alternative to our traditional public transit network in this time of social distancing. We discuss what that is about and what it could look like for Toronto. Lockdown Toronto brings in Tiawanese Doctor, Warren Wei-Jen Wang, M.D. to speak about the early days of the pandemic in Taiwan. Dr. Warren Wei-Jen Wang is an emergency medical specialist who has a primary care practise in Taiwan. He is a Member of the Taiwan Society of Emergency Medicine, a Member of the Taiwan Medical Association as well as running Taiwan's Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. He also divides his time between Taiwan and California where his children are currently studying. Dr. Wang was on the ground in the earliest days of the pandemic when he and his colleagues noticed an a-typical flu like symptoms in their clinics as early as November. The unknown nature of this disease and unidentifiable nature of it in November means international spread may have ocurred much earlier than previously understood. Dr. Wang helps us understand what 'doing it right' looks like. SARS, MERS, Swine Flu all hit Taiwan often and thus they had a robust 124 point plan on the shelf ready to go when the Covid pandemic hit. As a result, Taiwan has had only a few hundred cases, and only 6 deaths in a dense population of 24 million people. No lockdown or economic shutdown, and no intensely draconian containment measures. Taiwan has enjoyed multiple days of no new cases and continues to be an open and active society and economy because of their success in tackling this early, and systemically. === Launched in April 2020, Lockdown Toronto is a new vodcast/podcast series that focuses on the experience of living under lockdown in Toronto.
