In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin welcomes Dr. Richard Schwartz, creator of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of psychotherapy. Dick shares how he discovered that psychedelics naturally facilitate access to what IFS calls "Self energy" - the compassionate core within everyone that can heal wounded parts. He explains how medicines like ketamine and MDMA help relax protective parts of our psyche, revealing both Self energy and exiled parts that need healing. Dick reveals his personal journey with psychedelics, including his work with ketamine-assisted IFS therapy, and discusses the relationship between psychedelic experiences and spiritual guides. He emphasizes how reframing "bad trips" as opportunities for exiled parts to be witnessed can transform challenging experiences into profound healing moments. Dick Schwartz began his career as a family therapist and academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he discovered that family therapy alone did not achieve full symptom relief. His patients became his teachers as they described their inner "parts," which formed networks resembling the families he had been working with. He found that when patients separated from these parts, they shifted into a state of curiosity, calm, confidence, and compassion—what he called the Self. From these explorations, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s. Now evidence-based, IFS has become widely used, particularly for trauma work, offering non-pathologizing techniques for individuals, couples, families, corporations, and classrooms. Dick lives with his wife Jeanne near Chicago. Highlights:  The natural synergy between psychedelics and IFS therapy How psychedelics temporarily quiet protective "manager" parts Understanding how there are “no bad parts” of the psyche The difference between Self and parts in IFS Reconceptualizing "bad trips" as healing opportunities IFS and shadow work How psychedelics accelerate access to exiled parts Moving IFS beyond therapy into leadership and systemic change Legacy burdens: healing inherited trauma collectively Episode Sponsors:  Golden Rule Mushrooms - Get a lifetime discount of 10% with code THIRDWAVE at checkout

Were the 1990s really the “girl power” era of women's empowerment we remember? If you were “coming of age” or raising young girls 30 years ago, you probably remember the tumult of scantily clad celebs and brand-backed messaging ostensibly celebrating women's empowerment. In the latest episode of the Remarkable Retail podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Steve Dennis deliver a powerhouse episode split between urgent retail news and a highly anticipated interview with returning guest Andrew Lipsman, Founder & Chief Analyst Media, Ads + Commerce, one of the world's foremost authorities on retail media networks. The episode opens with a comprehensive review of the week's most pressing economic developments. The retail industry faces mounting challenges as tariffs continue to disrupt supply chains and pricing strategies. Cross-border tourism is in sharp decline—down 37% from Canada alone—impacting major cities like New York, Miami, and San Francisco. Chair of the Federal Reserve Jay Powell warned that proposed tariffs could trigger slower growth and higher inflation, further rattling markets. The retail response? Stockpiling. Sales of big-ticket items like furniture and autos are surging as consumers rush to beat looming price hikes. Shein and Temu are already raising prices and cutting back on U.S. advertising, signalling early effects of lost de minimis exemptions. Meanwhile, luxury brands such as Hermès are increasing prices. The news also covers Ulta's paused Target expansion, sluggish leasing activity in retail real estate, and IKEA's increasing bet on small-format stores.Shifting gears, the second half of the episode features the first part of an in-depth conversation with Andrew Lipsman, who offers a masterclass on the growth and complexity of retail media networks. Andrew traces the emergence of retail media as the “third wave” of digital advertising—following search (Google) and social (Meta)—and explains how closed-loop measurement and first-party data are transforming the economics of media buying. He explores how retail media isn't just stealing share from traditional platforms but unlocking new advertiser segments, particularly among third-party sellers and challenger brands. Andrew also tackles common criticisms, including the effectiveness of point-of-purchase ads and the often-misunderstood ROAS metric. With retailers like Amazon and Walmart now generating billions in high-margin revenue through media, Andrew argues that retail media is not just an ancillary channel — it's fast becoming a core growth engine. This episode is a must-listen for retailers, marketers, and media professionals seeking clarity on the headwinds of today's economy and the structural shifts reshaping the future of retail. When describing how Turnings come about, the Midlife cohort can seem less important than the young adults' exuberant energy or the Elders' wisdom and values. The Nomads (like GenX) are identified as rather uninteresting managers of the Crisis/4th Turning, not much else to do in their role. Perhaps, though, the people in midlife are the key to it all, the real impetus, the ones who push the Crisis towards its peak.    ================================ The tweet that - mostly - got this episode starting up again in my head https://twitter.com/larisa_a/status/1095350964226281473 A few notes here on how age, fertility, and other ways we suspect that midlife is a specific biological event. https://www.webmd.com/depression/features/midlife-crisis-opportunity#2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage-crisis_view https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erikson%27s_stages_of_psychosocial_development https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_and_female_fertility https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/01/why-do-killer-whales-go-through-menopause/512783/ Hadn't found this source when doing that earlier episode on The Third Wave http://www.thewavehome.com/1991_The-Wave_article.htm As mentioned, there was an earlier episode on Authoritarianism and Awakenings (Episode 16) that talks about The Third Wave and who was involved. While these substances remain illegal in many places and are wrapped in ongoing medical and legal debates, Paul is on a mission to educate, not evangelize. As your host, I keep this forum open to diverse voices, not to pass judgment but to spark critical thinking. We explore the myths and realities of psychedelics—how they might enhance mental clarity, creativity, and personal growth, while also addressing safety concerns, legal roadblocks, and the importance of responsible use.Curious about how legalization and decriminalization efforts are unfolding globally? Check out this BBC article for a snapshot of what's happening around the world.Key Highlights of Our Interview:The Real Risks of Psychedelics: Safety First“While psychedelics promise transformation, the biggest risk isn't just physiological—it's legal. These substances are still illegal in most places, so getting caught can have serious consequences. Beyond that, psychedelics can create instability if not handled with the right support and a safe environment.”Mindset Matters: Intention in Psychedelic Use“The real benefits of psychedelics start with intention. Using them to learn, grow, or heal can unlock deep insights, but if it's just to escape reality, the impact is far less meaningful. For anyone interested, working with a professional—be it a coach, therapist, or shaman—is essential. Preparation and a safe setting are crucial for a transformative experience.”The Five Elements for a Safe and Meaningful Psychedelic Journey“There are five essential elements: assessment, preparation, facilitation, integration, and microdosing. From asking the right questions to committing fully to the experience, each step helps build a safe and transformative path. Start low, go slow, and choose to step into this journey for yourself—not for anyone else.”Microdosing as a Catalyst, Not a Crutch“Microdosing isn't about masking problems; it's about creating neuroplasticity for real change. With commitment—two to three times a week for 30 days—you can catalyze significant shifts in mood, decision-making, and self-awareness. But this journey, like any transformation, relies on intention and responsibility. Microdosing is a tool, but you hold the reins to lasting growth.”_____________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Paul Austin______________________--Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. In recent days, we're speed-running towards confirming that is true or...not so much. Planning to repost the other older referenced one as well: Midlife in the Crisis. ======================================== Taking a contrarian view that authoritarian regimes are likely to be more successful during an Awakening / Second Turning than during a Crisis / Fourth Turning Here's where I first ran into Sarah Kendzior on Twitter (October 22, 2016) https://twitter.com/sarahkendzior/status/790030495568437248 And the more recent, relatively hopeful tweet https://twitter.com/sarahkendzior/status/890375102126272512 Charles Mann's 1491 is about the New World before Columbus arrived, and the varied cultures across the continents. We're joined by Paul Austin, CEO of Third Wave, who believes psychedelics can be transformative—when used responsibly. While legal and medical debates continue, Paul highlights the benefits of micro-dosing for personal development, leadership, and mental clarity. As your host, my goal is to provide a platform for diverse voices and ideas that push humanity forward. This is a space to explore, question, and expand our understanding. BBC: What psychedelics legalisation and decriminalisation looks like around the world. We discuss the common misunderstandings about psychedelics, key legal and medical concerns, and, most importantly, safety considerations and responsible practices to approach this evolving tool for personal growth. Join us to challenge assumptions and rethink growth. Key Highlights of Our Interview: The Real Risks of Psychedelics: Safety First “While psychedelics promise transformation, the biggest risk isn't just physiological—it's legal. These substances are still illegal in most places, so getting caught can have serious consequences. Beyond that, psychedelics can create instability if not handled with the right support and a safe environment.” Mindset Matters: Intention in Psychedelic Use “The real benefits of psychedelics start with intention. Using them to learn, grow, or heal can unlock deep insights, but if it's just to escape reality, the impact is far less meaningful. For anyone interested, working with a professional—be it a coach, therapist, or shaman—is essential. Preparation and a safe setting are crucial for a transformative experience.” The Five Elements for a Safe and Meaningful Psychedelic Journey “There are five essential elements: assessment, preparation, facilitation, integration, and microdosing. From asking the right questions to committing fully to the experience, each step helps build a safe and transformative path. Start low, go slow, and choose to step into this journey for yourself—not for anyone else.” Microdosing as a Catalyst, Not a Crutch “Microdosing isn't about masking problems; it's about creating neuroplasticity for real change. With commitment—two to three times a week for 30 days—you can catalyze significant shifts in mood, decision-making, and self-awareness. But this journey, like any transformation, relies on intention and responsibility. Microdosing is a tool, but you hold the reins to lasting growth.” Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Paul Austin ______________________ Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Paul Austin, a pioneer in the world of psychedelics and a leading voice in leveraging these substances for intentional personal growth and enhanced leadership. Today, Paul joins us to delve into how psychedelics are revolutionizing personal transformation and professional success. We'll explore how these tools can be harnessed to navigate the complexities of leadership, spur innovation, and drive growth in both personal and entrepreneurial realms. We will delve into the implications for insurers and pharmaceutical companies. KEY TAKEAWAYS I grew up pin a place where psychedelics, cannabis and all sort of illicit substances were frowned upon. But, at the age of 16, I was introduced to cannabis, and I started to experiment with it. My parents found out and were very disappointed in me. A few years later at university I started experimenting with psylocibin and it was much more profound and life changing. It inspired me to travel abroad and became a digital nomad, experimenting with microdosing. In 2015 I started an educational platform called Third Wave, because there wasn’t a lot of great educational information on the internet about psychedelics and I wanted to help people learn about the history, recent scientific studies as well as the risks sop that they could use it safely and effectively during their work. Back then it was still highly stigmatised, there weren’t a lot of people who understood some of the benefits and risks. Simply by being a first moved, providing free educational content, starting a podcast allowed me to help steer people when they came into the space. My focus then was mostly on microdosing. In our current climate that we live in, we’re very disconnected from the natural environment and we’re seeing the negative consequences of that. When people have psychedelic experiences they feel more connected to the natural environment. Psychedelics can be used as a tool, when used with intention and responsibility, to help us wake up to the fact that how we relate to the environment is how we relate to ourselves. The wider mission is how we step into a mode of environmental regeneration and how can psychedelics help leaders to recognise this? BEST MOMENTS ‘Life is what you make of it, we’re all sort of making it up as we go along, there’s massive creative potential to live life on your own terms.’ ‘Microdosing 2-3 times a week helped me to stop drinking alcohol and find more flow and creativity in my every-day life.’ ‘When psychedelics are done with intention, responsibility, in a safe way, they can have really productive outcomes for those who choose to take or work with them.’ ‘My intention has always been to make psychedelics accessible to more people. Microdosing is like getting in the shallow end of the pool before you jump in the deep end.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Austin is the founder of Third Wave, an educational platform dedicated to the responsible use of psychedelics, Paul has empowered millions to explore safe and meaningful experiences.
