Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
How do you scale support for smallholder farmers, in hard to reach locations, harvesting a slow maturing crop? Social Impact Pioneer Christina Mawuse Gyisun, Co-Founder of Sommalife, joins us to talk about the shea industry in West Africa and how she and her team are increasing market access, and securing the future of an industry, by better supporting female smallholder farmers. Though women shea nut farmers provide a crucial raw ingredient to the $430 billion beauty industry, many live in extreme poverty, struggle with limited access to markets, and face the devastating impacts of climate change. Sommalifeis changing the game with a bespoke tech platform that digitizes operations, connects farmers to buyers, and empowers them as environmental stewards. The Problem: Systemic Exclusion & Environmental Threats In West Africa, 60 million women smallholder farmers depend on raw commodities like shea nuts for survival. Yet, these farmers are often left out of formal markets, limited to selling their crop for low prices. Meanwhile, the shea tree—a lifeline for many communities—is at risk due to deforestation and vulnerable to climate change. In Ghana alone, 90% of charcoal production comes from shea trees, threatening both economic livelihoods and biodiversity. The Solution: Technology, Traceability & Market Access Sommalife has developed a bespoke digital platform to connect farmers directly to international buyers, ensuring fair prices and financial stability. Since 2020, the enterprise has: ✅ Digitised operations for 110,000 farmers ✅ Increased income by 23% for 40,000 women ✅ Protected 1,500+ acres of shea trees By leveraging AI and traceability technology, Sommalife enables ethical sourcing, ensuring that farmers benefit from global sustainability initiatives. This innovation aligns with the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D), which mandates supply chain transparency. Call to Action: Investing in Social Impact To scale this success, funding, collaboration, and corporate partnerships are crucial. Companies and investors looking to create real change can support ethical sourcing initiatives that protect the environment while improving livelihoods. As a Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of 2025, Mawuse is proving that sustainable business can be profitable and impactful. Will your organisation be part of this movement? My Life As A Landlord | Rentals, Real Estate Investing, Property Management, Tenants, Canada & US.
In the United States, there are three types of “animals” that a tenant can have: a pet, a service animal, and an emotional support animal. But each one is defined differently, each one may or may not have additional rent, a damage deposit, or require verification as a tenant applies for one of your units. Additionally, a landlord may have some questions about what “reasonable accommodation” regarding that animal. Where do we start? Krista Reuther returns to My Life As A Landlord, to help us figure out the ABCs of ESAs.

Welcome to Policy Matters: A quarterly presentation from Maitri Policy Advocacy, where we discuss public policies that are at the heart of shaping the way prevention, intervention, and overall attention to domestic violence within our communities. In our first presentation, we look at the medical mandate of reporting domestic violence that has been in the minds of survivors and advocates alike for a long time seeking to change the law. Joining us for the conversation, are Chris Negris, the Associate Director of Public Policy Strategies at the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, and Anisa Ali, Program Manager of Health at Futures without Violence. This discussion was led by Smitha Chandrasekhar, Smitha Chandrasekhar is a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Biology. She is currently on the pre-med track and intends to focus on a career in women's reproductive health and oncology. Smitha has been volunteering with Maitri for almost a year and is deeply invested in promoting the rights of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to their own bodies and autonomy. Chris Negri (he/him) is the Associate Director of Public Policy Strategies at the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. Working with Partnership staff, members, and allied organizations, he hopes to contribute to policy victories that fund prevention work, improve the lives of survivors, and address critical problems such as the financial and housing insecurity that survivors often face. He is particularly passionate about and dedicated to working on child welfare issues, mindful of the harm that the child welfare system often inflicts on children and families affected by domestic violence, particularly youth of color and LGBTQ+ young people. More About Chris :https://www.cpedv.org/profile/chris-negri Anisa Ali believes that all survivors deserve access to trauma-informed, culturally responsive health care and that health settings can be an important place of support for survivors. As a Program Manager at FUTURES, Anisa provides training and technical assistance for the National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence, including on the Campus Leadership Program, the Survivor Leadership Cohort, and California state policy work. She was a fellow for the Solís Policy Institute-State, through the Women's Foundation of California. Anisa earned her MA in Gender and Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her undergraduate degrees in International Studies and Spanish from Virginia Tech. Do you feel guilty when you are upset for no reason? Like many others, you may think that you're just ‘being ungrateful' or that it's wrong to feel sad, angry, or anxious when there's no apparent reason for you to feel this way. But what if there's more to it than that? What if you're not actually ungrateful, but depressed? How do you tell the difference? “Understanding and addressing Functional Cognitive Disorder (FCD) is an emerging field of science.” —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN It's usually a good idea to get an evaluation when experiencing issues with concentration, attention, or memory. Recognizing the differences between various cognitive disorders is crucial for appropriate management and care. LEARN ABOUT FUNCTIONAL COGNITIVE DISORDER (FCD) Functional cognitive disorder (FCD) is an emerging area in brain science. Unlike Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, FCD involves reported cognitive issues typically without the sensory or motor problems seen in dementia. IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOMS Typical symptoms of FCD include memory lapses, word-finding difficulties, and attention issues. These can be worsened by factors such as medications, depression, anxiety, pain, and poor sleep. Unlike dementia, FCD symptoms can fluctuate a lot, and individuals often experience good and bad days in their cognitive abilities. RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENCES FROM DEMENTIA FCD differs from dementia in several ways. People with FCD are often under 65, have higher education levels, and experience symptoms suddenly. The person often reports having much lower cognitive ability from what their neurophyschological assessments show and/or how well they function day-to-day. They are more aware and concerned about these percieved cognitive issues, unlike those with Alzheimer's, who may not realize their cognitive decline. DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT Diagnosing FCD involves thorough evaluations similar to those for dementia. However, FCD does not typically get worse over time, unlike progressive disorders like Alzheimer's. Management focuses on treating symptoms such as sleep problems, anxiety, and depression, and using self-help strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy to improve quality of life. By understanding and addressing FCD, we can provide better support and care for those experiencing cognitive challenges. RESOURCES Check out this Fact Sheet from neurosymptoms.org to learn more. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
The excesses of global soccer capitalism are well documented on this podcast. Perhaps no footballing country is more affected than England, the birthplace of the modern game and home to arguably the wealthiest clubs and league. To take it up one notch, six of its big clubs attempted to join the breakaway Super League while, around the same time, historic club Bury FC collapse and fell under administration. The fan protests surrounding both, the striking inequality growing in English football, and the fast growth of ever more dubious club owners spurred a “fan-led review” commissioned by the British government and, now, a proposal. In March of this year, the “Independent Football Regulator” was proposed. From future attempts to join a “super league” to tests of financial stability to a protection for crest and jersey colors, a wide range of developments in modern football would fall under the purview of the regulator if passed. And its introduction could spur similar developments in other countries. What exactly does the “regulator” look like, what could they do? What is the impact on fans as well as the future of bigger and smaller English clubs, at home and on the global stage? The Football Supporters Organization, the FSA, England's largest and most influential fan lobbying organization, has been involved in the process from the beginning - as a contributor but also as a critic. Michael Brunskill from the FSA helps me explain the history, the potential and the shortcomings of the football regulator. And what sounds like a technical and political discussion will impact fans of the game around the globe. The Fed shut down the BTFP, but just before it closed billions in loans were made to banks over the repeated objections of policymakers. Officials have been pushing depositories toward the Discount Window to the point even the FHLB system is dissuading its members from using its own advances as emergency liquidity. Yet, the last-minute BTFP indicates banks just aren't doing it with some substantial implications. Carson Block, activist short seller and founder of Muddy Waters Research and Muddy Waters Capital, returns to Forward Guidance to share his short thesis on Blackstone Mortgage Trust (BXMT), a large publicly traded vehicle that owns loans backed by commercial real estate (CRE) buildings. Block argues that a “perfect macro storm” of lower net operating income (NOI), higher interest rates, and impaired CRE values, could force BXMT to cut their dividend. Using individual loan level data from BXMT's collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), Block found that, absent rate swaps, 73% of CLO borrowers aren't covering interest expense, and 27% were unable to pay just the risk free rate (SOFR). Block estimates that 16 Billion (notional value) of rate swaps will expire in 2024, which will put severe stress on the borrowers as well as BXMT itself, potentially creating a liquidity crisis. Block and Farley discuss Blackstone Mortgage Trust's “fact sheet,” which BXMT may have released in response to Muddy Waters report, originally released on December 6. This interview was filmed on December 20, 2023. NOTE: as disclosed during this interview, Block and his firm are short BXMT against a comparable basket of longs. In no way is this interview an inducement to short BXMT. Lastly, throughout the interview the term “Blackstone” is sometimes used in lieu of “Blackstone Mortgage Trust”; it is this company, and NOT Blackstone (BX) itself, that is being referenced, as the bear case discussed in this interview is for BXMT, not BX.
