From the beginning, Pandora has banked on a proprietary music rating system called the Music Genome Project. It involves rating songs on hundreds of attributes, from “aggressive drumming” and “jazz influences” to “angry lyrics” and “ambiguous soundscapes.” These ratings are given by trained musicologists — people who are musicians themselves, many of whom have advanced degrees in music — and it takes about 12 to 15 minutes per song. We wanted to know: Was it worth it? === Original video: https://soundcloud.com/soundshowpodcast/7-the-music-genome-project-hasnt-failed-yet Downloaded by http://huffduff-video.snarfed.org/ on Mon, 16 Jan 2017 20:57:04 GMT Available for 30 days after download

Planet Money - Oil #1: We Buy Oil

Oil is everywhere, and in nearly everything: Our phones, our clothes, our food, and our medicine. It has driven industrial progress and technology. It has shaped our civilization, powered its rise. Despite all this, oil has exacted an enormous price: our climate is changing, smog is smothering cities around the world. That all comes, in part, from burning fossil fuels like oil. Yet — how many of us have actually seen crude oil? How does it get from ground to gas tank? And who are the people along the way turning thick black crude into light, clear, gasoline. Oil companies are some of the largest businesses on earth, but there are thousands and thousands of tiny operations that are just as essential to the oil industry. We wanted to get to know them. Here at Planet Money, we thought the best way to see into the business of oil would be to get into the business of oil. Today on the show, that's exactly what we're going to do, starting with a briefcase full of cash and plane tickets to Kansas. This is the first of five episodes.

Benches in parks, train stations, bus shelters and other public places are meant to offer seating, but only for a limited duration. Many elements of such seats are subtly or overtly restrictive. Arm rests, for instance, indeed provide spaces to rest arms, but they also prevent people from lying down or sitting in anything but a prescribed position. This type of design strategy is sometimes classified as "hostile architecture," or simply: "unpleasant design." Gordan Savičić and Selena Savić, co-editors of the book Unpleasant Design, are quick to point out that unpleasant designs are not failed designs, but rather successful ones in the sense that they deter certain activities by design. === Original video: https://soundcloud.com/roman-mars/219-unpleasant-design Downloaded by http://huffduff-video.snarfed.org/
