Austin Mitchell was a kind and passionate young man living with his family in Union City, GA. The 20-year-old was a recent honors graduate with big dreams for the future. But in one tragic moment in March of 2019, all of that would be taken away. Austin had been hanging out with some friends in a nearby townhome when something unexpected occurred resulting in Austin's death. His friends reported that he'd died by suicide, but his parents think otherwise. They believe the information they have learned over time asserts the theory that their son was a victim of foul play. Linda McDougall is a journalist, television producer and author of Cherie: The Perfect Life of Mrs Blair and Westminster Women. She is also known as the wife of the late Austin Mitchell, who was a journalist and the Labour Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby from 1977 until 2015. Linda's latest book, Marcia Williams: The Life and Times of Baroness Falkender, seeks to realign Marcia's reputation away from previously dismissive and misogynistic verdicts. This pioneering biography of Harold Wilson's political adviser puts forward a more nuanced understanding of Marcia, centred around her unbreakable partnership with Wilson – asserting that they were in fact politically wedded to each other and equal contributors to his success. In this episode, Linda shares what made Marcia such a remarkable force and how she propelled Wilson's career, as well as drawing comparisons with today's political scene. Interview mit Austin Mitchell und Matthew Weimer plus News
"For emissions in the sector that we studied, the 80/20 rule really applied, because it was 80% of the emissions coming from 20% of the facilities...For those 20% it was generally not the case that there wasn't an easy fix—better maintenance programs, or just even having an operator drive by and unstick a valve." In this episode, I'm in conversation with Austin Mitchell, the CEO and co-founder of Synota, on the topic of energy finance transformation. One of the legacy challenges of energy finance is the separation of energy transactions (the movement, measurement, custody transfer, and ownership of energy products — electrons and molecules) from the financial transactions of energy products (purchase and sale agreements, contracts, settlements, and accounting). "We've designed a physical system that's really incredible [at moving energy around], but as I spent time in industry, what became really apparent to me is that we are way less efficient at moving money back up the value chain." Modern digital tools can fundamentally overhaul this long-standing structure by enabling real time settlement of transactions, and releasing billions of dollars in credit, interest payments, financing charges and resourcing associated with energy finance. "In that entire value chain everybody's extending credit to everybody. If credit's not being extended, then you're the entity having to borrow the cash to pay the person who won't give you credit. So there's credit, there's collateral, and there are departments at every energy company to manage that." Austin Mitchell is the Co-founder and CEO of Synota and has spent his career in the energy industry. He started in academia where his research informed energy and environmental policy at state and federal levels. Austin's energy expertise includes markets, utilities and regulation, business strategy, and risk management. He is passionate about solving the global problems of energy equity and access. "We arrive at conservative estimates of 10% of the cost of the average business and residential bill is directly tied to that financial inefficiency. It's everything from the payment processors, to the bad debt. And all of the back office processes and resources dedicated to managing the existing system." Austin holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton, and a PhD in Engineering & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Austin is a proud father of two kids, loves to be active, and gives back to his community. This episode's guest is Austin Mitchell, the CEO of Synota, where he is using the power of the Bitcoin lightening network to change the way that energy payments are made. Austin has a background in the traditional energy world and has worked for a variety of energy companies during his career. From the experience he gained working in the utility sector, he saw how the Bitcoin network had the potential to change the financial side of how energy is monetized. This episode we discuss the power of proof-of-work, and how it ties the physical world to the financial world. We discuss how Bitcoin is changing the energy landscape and how the Bitcoin network is a base layer that developers can build on to create second and third layer payment solutions for energy companies. Lastly, we talk about the future of monetizing energy, and how in a not too distant future, using the lightning network will feel as obvious as using the internet does today. Hope you enjoy the show! Austin Mitchell is the Co-Founder and CEO of Synota. In this interview, we discuss his plan to use the Lightning Network to settle transactions in the energy industry, and how this should bring greater equality to the energy market whilst also enabling the whole energy economy to move to the Lightning Network. - - - - Bitcoin is prospectively the best version of money, worldwide instant payments rail, market-based accelerant for energy production, and energy grid stabiliser. It's infuriating that more people aren't waking up to its potential. Perhaps it's the FUD, the passive damage caused by dysfunction in the crypto industry, or the ignorance of there being bitcoin the money and Bitcoin the network. But Bitcoin's story is still being written; as many keep saying - it's still early. We all know that there are nascent layer 2 innovations that are taking Bitcoin in new directions. But even hardened advocates continue to be amazed at the use cases being developed using Bitcoin's various characteristics. Take the Lightning Network: the game-changing payment protocol. It is the layer that enables Bitcoin to scale. But what does that actually mean? Well, quite a lot. Bitcoin is fast becoming an integral part of the energy industry. In addition to the known functions comes a new one: the Lightning Network's instant settlement facility and distributed payment network is set to transform energy finance. The current system is predicated on old analogue payment processes, full of inefficiencies that unnecessarily bloat costs for producers and consumers. The prize is a real-time payment system that simplifies energy finance whilst enabling greater functionality. It could make the market more flexible, dynamic and equitable. The result could be that it draws the whole energy economy onto the Lightning Network. It's a lightbulb moment given how big that industry is: $4.5 trillion is spent on energy a year. There are additional services that could be included. The lightbulb fuses when you think about what other industries could find similar utility. The lightbulb explodes when you remember Lightning is just one of many layer 2 innovations. We're still so very very early.
“Imagine the Lightning Network being very similar to the energy system itself and how it moves money, where every physical node now has its own node in the Lightning Network. And when energy moves in one direction, money moves in the other, basically what we're creating is a system where money can move as fast as energy.”— Austin MitchellAustin Mitchell is the Co-Founder and CEO of Synota. Tim Sullivan & Alec Kostival discuss the Phillies and Austin Mitchell not being alive, to them.
An internationally respected music theorist and performer, Eddie Landsberg was born and raised in Philadelphia and began classical piano training at the age of 5, starting Jazz Studies at Philadelphia's famous Settlement Music School in his teens. Switching to Hammond Organ in his mid 20's, he received his first organ lesson from the legendary Shirley Scott then studied Jazz composition and performance with Blue Note Recording artist Big John Patton. Eddie also received guidance from Austin Mitchell (a favorite accompanist of Ella Fitzgerald) and began performing alongside Byard Lancaster and other "old school" Philly and East Coast Jazz and R&B legends. After recording several CDs which received national air play ( NPR, WBGO and hundreds of radio stations across in the U.S), Eddie became the original factory demonstrator for the Nord Electro keyboard. Shortly after, he moved to Japan where he spent almost 20 years teaching, leading bandstands and running his own venues. He has also done vocal and performance coaching with the Japanese pop group Special Others (Victor Records).Eddie currently resides in Queens, New York with his wife and three dogs. He is the creator of the "7 Secrets of Jazz and Soul" Jazz improv series.

Judy, a mother of two young kids, practices a demanding style of child-rearing. It’s called attachment parenting, and it says you should keep your baby close at all times, breastfeed on demand, share your bed, and avoid strollers. Like many attachment parents, Judy believes the sacrifices she makes will ensure her kids will become well-adjusted, successful, happy adults. But, what does the science say? To find out, Science Vs speaks to Prof. Alan Sroufe, Prof. Jane Fisher and Reut Avinun. We often hear stories about fracking that go like this: a gas company comes to a small town, starts drilling wells, and then terrible things start to happen. People get sick. Water burns from taps. Earthquakes ruin houses. And the climate will soon be destroyed. But, is fracking really a disaster unfolding? To find out, Science Vs speaks to Prof. Robert Jackson, Asst. Prof. Peter Rabinowitz and Prof. Bob Howarth. We’re also joined by Pennsylvanian resident James Hughes and Seneca Resources’ Rob Boulware and Doug Kepler. Credits: This episode has been produced by Wendy Zukerman, Caitlin Kenney, Heather Rogers, Kaitlyn Sawrey. Edited by Annie-Rose Strasser and Alex Blumberg. Production assistance by Austin Mitchell. Fact checking by Michelle Harris. Recordings from the Town Hall meeting in 2014 are from NPR's WHYY reporter Katie Colaneri, and the team at NPR’s StateImpact Pennsylvania. Thank you.
