"Historisch gezien neemt de beurs dit soort grote geopolitieke ontwikkelingen voor kennisgeving aan", zegt Han Dieperink van Aureus Vermogensbeheer. Hij voegt daaraan toe dat meestal een maand na zo'n aanval de beurs 2 procent hoger staat en na zes maanden 6 procent hoger en een jaar later 8 procent hoger. Ook Richard de Jong van Van Lieshout & Partners denkt dat uiteindelijk de ratio zal overheersen. "Wie er ook de nieuwe leider wordt van Iran, een afsluiting van de Straat van Hormuz is voor Iran zelf ook niet vol te houden. 90 procent van hun olie-export gaat via de Straat van Hormuz." Richard denkt dat het conflict op relatief korte termijn opgelost gaat worden. Wat de beurs betreft: de volatiliteit nu is oplopen, maar nog altijd een stuk lager dan toen Trump in april vorig jaar zijn handelstarieven invoerde. Dat zou beleggers moed kunnen geven. Over Broadcom zijn beide experts zeer te spreken. De Amerikaanse chipfabrikant liet spectaculaire cijfers zien en de vooruitzichten zijn ook nog eens prima. Op software maken ze een marge van 90 procent en op hun chips 60 procent. Richard denkt er ook over om zijn belang in Broadcom uit te breiden. Dit is de zevende aflevering in de podcastreeks over werken in het onderwijs, gemaakt op uitnodiging van het Nationaal Kennisinstituut Onderwijs (voorheen het NRO) en de programmacommissie Werken in het onderwijs. In deze aflevering ga ik in gesprek met Sietske Waslander en Anko van Hoepen. Sietske is hoogleraar sociologie en verbonden aan TIAS School for Business and Society. Ze doet onderzoek naar sturingsprocessen in het onderwijs op stelsel-, organisatie- en regionaal niveau. Anko van Hoepen is bestuursvoorzitter van SPO Utrecht, een bestuur van meer dan 35 openbare scholen in de stad Utrecht. We gaan in gesprek over de vraag: wat mogen we (en wat kunnen we) verwachten van regionale sturingsnetwerken in het onderwijs? We doen dit door het onderzoeksproject Sturen met ruimte: regionaal bestuur in het onderwijs te bespreken en specifiek de publicatie De regio als bestuurlijk schaalniveau. Deze publicatie is gebaseerd op een empirische studie naar 30 regionale sturingsnetwerken. Het afgelopen tv-weekend barstte uit zijn voegen van de ‘nieuwe’ programma’s. Zo nam Gerard Joling het op tegen Wie is de Mol? en bezocht Yvon Jaspers de zoveelste lichting vrijgezelle boeren. Welke titel wist te verrassen en wat viel vies tegen? Het panel van de AD Media Podcast velt een oordeel. Over de aftrap van het nieuwe Boer Zoekt Vrouw-seizoen zijn de meningen verdeeld. Mediaverslaggever Gudo Tienhooven had moeite om wakker te blijven, columnist Angela de Jong en presentator Manuel Venderbos genoten juist van een ouderwets staaltje ‘slow television’. Wie is de Mol? kan rekenen op meer onverdeeld enthousiasme. Verrassend, want er werd met ‘frisse tegenzin’ naar gekeken. En Only Joling? Dat de eerste aflevering vooral déjà vu-gevoelens oproept, hoeft blijkbaar geen probleem te zijn. Problematischer is Project Dans dat ondanks ondermaatse kijkcijfers toch aan een nieuwe reeks begon. Maar waarom die tweede kans op het hoofdpodium van de publieke omroep, vragen De Jong en Tienhooven - die ook de kwaliteiten van het programma benoemen - zich af. En wat is er aan de hand met De slimste mens? De quiz scoort nog voldoende publiek, maar de cijfers fonkelen niet meer als voorheen. Het panel zoekt naar de oorzaak. Luisteren dus! Developing practical technologies for quantum information systems requires the cooperation of academic researchers, national laboratories and industry. That is the mission of the  Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA), which is based at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US. The QSA's director Bert de Jong is my guest in this episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast. His academic research focuses on computational chemistry and he explains how this led him to realise that quantum phenomena can be used to develop technologies for solving scientific problems. In our conversation, de Jong explains why the QSA is developing a range of  qubit platforms − including neutral atoms, trapped ions, and superconducting qubits – rather than focusing on a single architecture. He champions the co-development of quantum hardware and software to ensure that quantum computing is effective at solving a wide range of problems from particle physics to chemistry. In the midst of academic debates about the utility of the term “magic” and the cultural meaning of ancient words like mageia or khesheph, this Guide to the Study of Ancient Magic seeks to advance the discussion by separating out three topics essential to the very idea of magic. The three major sections of this volume address (1) indigenous terminologies for ambiguous or illicit ritual in antiquity; (2) the ancient texts, manuals, and artifacts commonly designated “magical” or used to represent ancient magic; and (3) a series of contexts, from the written word to materiality itself, to which the term “magic” might usefully pertain.The individual essays in this volume cover most of Mediterranean and Near Eastern antiquity, with essays by both established and emergent scholars of ancient religions.In a burgeoning field of “magic studies” trying both to preserve and to justify critically the category itself, this volume brings new clarity and provocative insights. David Frankfurter holds the William Goodwin Aurelio Chair of the Appreciation of Scripture at Boston University. He joined the faculty of B.U. in the fall of 2010.
