We hope you enjoy this rerelease of one of our favorite episode: Episode 31. Originally released on June 29, 2020, you will hear us discuss one of our favorite elected officials ever, Buddy Cianci. He was quite a character and reminded us of Tina's favorite show, The Sopranos. Hillary and Tina cover the illegal occupation of Hawaii and former Providence, Rhode Island Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci. Hillary's Story The island chain of Hawaii was ruled by the Kingdom of Hawaii beginning in 1795, but in 1893, the United States unlawfully invaded the island leading to an overthrow of the Hawaiian government. Tina's Story Buddy Cianci served as the longest serving mayor of Providence, Rhode Island from 1975-1984, and again from 1991-2002. But, when the FBI gets wind of a possible corruption scandal, Buddy may have been too buddy buddy with local scoundrels and found himself in the muck. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that The Providence Bruins began operation for the start of the 1992–93 AHL season after Providence mayor Buddy Cianci negotiated a deal with the owners of the Maine Mariners franchise to relocate their club? The move saw AHL hockey return to Providence for the first time since the Providence Reds, a founding member of the AHL, left town in 1977. Now for our feature story: Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Dan McKee said he wants cities and towns to become more involved in the COVID-19 vaccination effort to help speed up distribution once more shots become available. McKee said Friday that he hopes to expand the state's capacity to get shots in arms after he takes over from Gov. Provi. McKee said that cities and towns “are going to be a big part of that,” in a virtual meeting with his COVID-19 advisers. “We need to use our communities to create this 9/11 moment where we bring people together in a way that we are rallying around an enemy, and COVID is the enemy, and we are going to beat that enemy,” McKee said. The Democrat did not provide more detail about his plans for cities and towns, but he said he will continue to use state vaccination sites created under the Raimondo administration. McKee has been critical of the state's vaccination efforts, which he has said are moving too slowly. Governor Raimondo is leaving her post after being chosen by President Joe Biden to lead the United States Commerce Department. And for more about the latest covid stories in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Charlestown. They're looking for experienced bartenders. I also was a reporter and anchor at WPRI in Providence. So over the years I have spent a lot of time there. It has a salty reputation from back in the 70s as a home for The New England mafia. In fact, I was there as the feds were cracking down on the Patriarca crime family. Providence also had its political characters like former mayor, and convicted felon, the late Buddy Cianci. In fact, there is a play coming up – on buddy’s life -- at Trinity Rep – one of the great playhouses in the US – you should take in if you visit the Ocean State.Providence has its own New England accent. Unless you lived in New England you would have a difficult time differentiating it from a Boston or a New York accent. Providence also has its own language. A milkshake there is called a cabinet. In Rhode Island and in Providence, it’s a quahog – not a clam. And while driving, a rotary is known as a round-about.Providence is also a rebuilt city that is a joy to visit with a great waterfront on Narragansett Bay. This week we meet a couple who found themselves drinking water contaminated by radioactive lab waste, and a man who has to wear a hazmat suit to enter his house. We’ll also learn about the down and dirty politics of Providence, Rhode Island in the 1970s and 80s, when city leaders cozied up to the mob. Finally, immigrants to New England give us a sense of what we should be grateful for. Dan and Dawn Crim stand on the front porch of the Laconia, New Hampshire home they fled in 2014. Lab animals and the chemicals that were used on them – were dumped by researchers in the 1960s and 70s. Now a toxic chemical – 1,4 dioxane – has shown up in the groundwater of nearby homeowners. Rebecca Sananes has been covering the story for Vermont Public Radio, and she gets us caught up. Brady Sullivan Properties has, to put it mildly, had a pretty bad couple of years. They've made the news after state and federal investigations into lead contamination and illegal dumping of asbestos. NHPR’s Jack Rodolico investigates.  Lobsters and Mobsters Logo for the Crimetown podcast. (Credit: Gimlet Media) A Republican who ran on the promise of breaking up the corrupt Democratic machine in Providence in 1974, Vincent “Buddy Cianci” was a hard-working mayor. He’d stay at the office into the night fixing problems,  and would even show up at a fire at two in the morning. But in order to get elected, Cianci cut deals with the political machine, and he “made arrangements” with the local mob. Marc Smerling and Zac Stewart-Pontier, producers of the HBO documentary series the Jinx, sat down with mobsters and bureaucrats years later to create Crimetown, a new podcast from Gimlet Media. Crimetown’s first season chronicles the decades-long dance between Cianci, the mob empire of Raymond Patriarca, and the people of Providence.
