No matter how dark the season is, “By God's abounding grace, Christmas still arrives every year—somehow or other, it comes just the same…to direct our hearts and minds to the story of Christ and his people—and to place our lives and communities within this sacred narrative.” These are the words of Dr. Emily Hunter McGowin from her new book, “Christmas: The Season of Life and Light.” Dr. McGowin is associate professor of theology at Wheaton College, and co-pastors with her husband in the Anglican church. Her new book is part of a series from InterVarsity Press about important dates in the Christian calendar. And I'd say she got the fun assignment: Christmas. Or rather, Christmastide—the 12 days of celebration from Christmas to Epiphany. It's a reflection on the moods, themes, rituals, prayers and Scriptures that mark Christmastide. A resource to help us live fully into both the theology and spiritual practices of the season—one of deep magic.   Because, as she writes, “At the center of the mystery of Christmas is the astonishing fact that God has come to dwell with us.” Some might question the commercialism of Christmas, and yes discernment is key, but as Dr. McGowin would say, God is in the celebration, too. She writes, “God's loving embrace extends to our particulars—noses and toes, meals and gifts, decorations and gift-giving.” The season of life and light. Of timeless beauty. Christians are obsessed with sex. But not in a good way. For generations countless people have suffered pain, guilt, and judgment as a result of this toxic fixation on sex, the body, and physical pleasure. In the follow-up to her celebrated New York Times bestseller Accidental Saints, Bolz-Weber unleashes her critical eye, her sharp pen, and her vulnerable but hopeful soul on the caustic, fear-riddled, and religiously inspired messages about sex that have fed our shame. In turn, Bolz-Weber offers no simple amendments or polite compromises, because the stakes are too high—and our souls and our bodies are worth too much. Instead, this tattooed, swearing, modern-day pastor calls for a new reformation. She urges us to take antiquated, sexist ideas about sex, gender, and our bodies and “burn them the f*ck down and start all over.” This is a journey of holy resistance. Along the way, as anecdotes to shame, heresy, and all-too-familiar injustice, Bolz-Weber dispenses grace, freedom, and courage. She shares stories, poetry, and scripture, cultivating resilient hope and audacious love rooted in good news that is “powerful enough, transgressive enough, and beautiful enough to heal not only the ones who have been hurt but also those who have done the hurting.”In Bolz-Weber’s most personal, bracingly honest book yet, she shares intimately about her life, with her trademark blend of vulnerability, humor, and candor. If you’ve been mistreated, confused, angered, and/or wounded by the shaming sexual messages so prevalent in religion, this one is for you. Also, be sure to tune into the next time for a special episode with Lydia’s good friends Bethany LaRue and Matt Brown of We Didn’t Ask for This Podcast!Get in touch with us at:Email: weturnedoutfine@gmail.comWebsite: weturnedoutfine.comTwitter: weturnedoutfineInstagram: wtofpodcastWe Turned Out Fine is created and produced by Naomi and Lydia Jackson and all editing elements by Lydia Jackson. ©2019 We Turned Out Fine.

Mental health is complicated. But there are some things that can trigger depression in almost anyone. I begin this episode with a list of things that can cause you to lose your objectivity and make you sad if you let them. (https://www.everydayhealth.com/columns/therese-borchard-sanity-break/surprising-reasons-young-people-get-depressed/)If you knew there was a good chance that you could get a discount on a new shirt or pair of pants or a vacuum cleaner – but you had to ask – would you? It turns out that you can get discounts on many items in retail stores by asking but you have to ask the right way. To find out how listen to my discussion with Emily Hunter. Emily Hunter. Emily is an associate professor of management at Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business, where she teaches negotiation and conflict management. (https://business.baylor.edu/directory/?id=Emily_M_Hunter)Who hasn’t felt guilty about not visiting grandma or some other friend or relative? You go when you can but you wish you could go more often– right? Well if you ever feel that way, there is something important to understand. It is called the “certainty of contact.” I’ll explain what it is. (Dr. Charles Foster, author of Feel Better Fast - https://amzn.to/2Jm9YdH) How often have you heard people talk about the “rat race” and how important it is to get out of it? The idea is that the rat race is so stressful that it is somehow bad for you. But is it really? Not according to economist Todd Buchholz author of the book, RUSH: Why You Need and Love the Rat Race (https://amzn.to/2LiKQSF). Todd makes a compelling case that the stress of the rat race is exactly the fuel we need. By the way Todd served as White House director of economic policy under George H.W. Bush. His latest book is called The Price of Prosperity: How Rich Nations Fail and How to Renew Them (https://amzn.to/2Linigr)

Inspired by her experiences as a single working mother living in a marginalized community, Tanya Fields founded the BLK ProjeK in 2009 as a response to sexist institutional policies, structurally reinforced cycles of poverty, and harsh inequities in wealth and access to capital that result in far too many women being unable to rise out of poverty and sustain their families. The group was nominated for a 2011 Union Square Award and Tanya has the honor of being a  Green for All Fellows, through which she connects with a national cohort of environmental justice change agents. With a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Baruch College, and a talent for public speaking, blogging and singing, Tanya has become a sought after speaker.  She provided a widely praised keynote speech at the 2012 Just Food conference, and served as a plenary panelist for the 2011 conference of the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group. Previous to the BLK ProjeK, Tanya worked with several high profile environmental organizations located in the South Bronx - Mothers on the Move, Sustainable South Bronx and the Majora Carter Group.  Tanya built upon the network, skills, resources and knowledge she gained through those experiences to create the BLK ProjeK. She is a reputed and rising public speaker and educator. She has spoken, conducted workshops and participated on panels at Just Food Annual Conference, NOFA NY Winter Conference, Manhattanville College, Kingsboro College, Brooklyn Food Coalition, NEWSAWG and others.
