This week we bring you an episode from one of our favorite podcasts, The Longest Shortest Time, which features bold, poignant, funny stories about parenthood and reproductive health. Kulap was a guest in 2018! You can find her episode here. CJ Rivers had always dreamed of being a dad. But as a single person with a uterus who also dates people with uteruses, the path to parenthood was logistically tricky. In this episode, we follow CJ's road to dadhood — including sperm mishaps, blatant discrimination, and an underground group of queer midwives in Athens. Buckle up, because this ride is a wild one!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Good Kids: How Not to Raise an A**hole

Hillary Frank, author and host of the award-winning parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, takes us on a journey to the wonderful world of weird parenting. You won't find any of these tips in a traditional parenting book. Instead, Hillary says, weird parenting is real advice from real parents born out of moments of sheer desperation. “One of my favorites is a game called ‘What's on My Butt?' You lie down face-down on the couch or on the floor, and then you tell them to get some random object and place it on your butt. And then you have to guess what the thing is and the longer it takes you to guess, the longer you get to lie down.” You can follow Hillary Frank on Twitter @hillaryfrank and on Instagram @thisishillaryfrank.  Support the show by checking out our sponsors! Jenny also explains why it was important to her to make certain that readers could see themselves reflected within the pages."It's not your typical new baby book. The idea is that there are a lot of great books out there. I read them all, and they can be fantastic. Because this incredible thing is happening right under our skin. We wanna do what's right. We are hungry for the information, but that also can be part of the problem. There is so much to know and so many options that we're sorta barraged by all of these things,  and so many people feel strongly that one particular way is the right way to do things. One particular product is the one we should buy. And, it just leads to this incredible anxiety around something that anxiety doesn't really help."—Jenny PritchettAbout Jenny:Jenny Pritchett (alias Jenny True) is a nationally recognized columnist for Romper, where she publishes advice on pregnancy and parenting, as well as on her popular blog Jenny True: An Excruciatingly Personal Mommy Blog, which was a finalist for the Mom 2.0 2019 People's Choice Awards. Today I am talking about going past your due date in pregnancy. The goal of the show today is to tell you about my own personal experience with being overdue and to give you some suggestions on what you can do with that time!In addition to talking about my experiences going past my due date with each of my pregnancies, I also talk about how I was introduced to my favorite podcast, The Longest Shortest Time. The difference between going overdue the first and second time was night and day! I had been there before, but what did I do differently? The biggest difference was my mental framework:Having a list of things I could do with my timeSetting expectations that he wouldn’t be born until 42 weeksI planned ahead! I made a Can Do list instead of a To Do list!Everyday that I woke up pregnant I had a list of things that I could do that dayThen it was a win-winIf I was still pregnant, I got stuff doneIf I wasn’t...I had my baby! The average first time mom goes into labor at 41 weeks + 1 day!To be clear, I am not recommending that no one get induced!!! One of my goals in my pregnancy was to have as few medical interventions as possible, especially getting induced. That was important to me! Each birthing person, baby and pregnancy is different. If you are interested in reading about what the evidence shows about the pros and cons of going past your due date vs. getting induced, here is a great article by Evidence Based Birth: https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-due-dates/My recommendations for creating your own "Can Do List"You aren’t giving yourself a list of tasks to accomplishYou are thinking of Self Care activities to do while you are waitingI suggest making a few different lists depending on what you are in the mood for!ConnectingSpend time with your spouse: have date nights, discuss preparing for the birth and parenting Spend time with family and friends, even if this is over FaceTime!Spend time with yourself: Go for a walkListen to this songJournalListen to your favorite musicWatch your favorite movieProductivityMake freezer meals for you to eat after baby arrives Clean your house or dust the baby’s roomDo some Spinning Babies exercises to get your baby in the optimal positionWrite your baby gift Thank You notes Find postpartum support! The infectious children’s tune has more than 2.3 billion views on YouTube and made it onto the Billboard Top 40 list. So what makes this song so catchy and irresistible to children? And how do the rest of us cope with the unavoidable hit while keeping our sanity? According to the internet security company AVG, 92% of children in the U.S. have a digital presence by the time they turn two. But a University of Michigan poll from March 2015 found that three-fourths of parents think another parent has shared too much information about their child online. In this episode, we bring together three people with very different approaches for a conversation about ethics, photography, and the struggle of weighing future consequences in a world we can't quite picture yet (no pun intended). Here's where our three moms stand on posting photos of their kids: Note to Self Host Manoush Zomorodi, who posts nothing. Note to Self Executive Producer Jen Poyant, who posts every day on Instagram. Longest Shortest Time Host Hillary Frank, who posts drawings and side-angles but no faces. Hillary Frank got into radio by breaking the rules, using a boombox and an answering machine to produce a segment for This American Life. She is the host of the leading parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, which joined Earwolf in January 2016. On this episode of The Wolf Den Hillary tells Adam the This American Life story, and explains how working as a freelance radio producer and a difficult child birth led her to create her podcast. They discuss how her expectations shifted as the podcast became successful in its own right, and why Hillary decided to bring The Longest Shortest Time to Earwolf. Finally, Hillary offers some trenchant and unconventional advice for aspiring podcasters.

Two of this week's movies feature humans that have been programmed to be killing machines. Which, if either, is worth seeing? One is called "Hitman: Agent 47," and stars Rupert Friend and Zachary Quinto. The other is called "American Ultra," and stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. There's also killing in "Sinister 2," but none of it involves programming humans to be killers. We also have some very special Movie Therapy for Joanna, the producer of WNYC's Longest Shortest Time podcast. And, as always, there's trivia!

This is the latest installment of "Question of Note," in which we take a listener's question — your question! — and find just the right the person (or in this case... people) to answer it. See them all here as we go along. Got a Question of Note you'd like answered? Email notetoself@wnyc.org with a voice memo. Here's how to record one.  There is a child among us who will live to be 150 years old. When this kid celebrates his centennial and a half, how is he going to feel about the picture you just posted of today's playground disaster?  This week's question comes from a father whose social media profiles are covered in photos of his kid: "I was wondering if it's right of me to just blindly post pic after pic of my 3-year-old's entire life all over social media. Should I start deleting every pic until he's old enough to give consent? Or is this just what it's like to grow up in a digital world?" — Judd Wachstein, Atlanta, Georgia According to the Pew Research Center, 92 percent of children in the U.S. have a digital presence by the time they turn two. But a University of Michigan poll earlier this year found that three-fourths of parents think that another parent has shared too much information about their child online. So no matter what we do, there are some very strong opinions out there. We put three people with very different philosophies together for a conversation about ethics, photography, and the struggle of weighing future consequences in a world just can't picture yet (no pun intended). In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen cover all the bases with new releases, Sweatpants picks, an interview, Movie Therapy, and, of course, trivia! On the new releases front: they review the teen time travel adventure "Project Almanac," Anne Hathaway's indie music romance "Song One," and the racially charged custody battle flick, "Black or White," starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer. For this week's Sweatpants flick, they talk with Sarah Montague, WNYC's resident animal expert and executive producer of Selected Shorts, about the Puppy Bowl, the Kitten Bowl, and the Fish Bowl. They then administer some Movie Therapy for listeners of The Longest Shortest Time who need to get their sexy back after having children.  And this week's movie trivia might be a stumper for anyone born before 1970 or after 2000.
