Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos is a Chicanx artist and musician who has been playing under the name Y La Bamba for nearly 20 years. As the child of immigrant parents, Luz Elena struggled to feel seen in the music industry, but as they've continued making music, they have grown into their identity as an artist. Last year, Luz Elena moved back to Mexico City to explore where they come from. That search also led to the publication of their seventh studio album — “Lucha” — and to Y La Bamba playing their first show ever in Mexico City. In this episode, Luz Elena shares why playing that show was so important to them and reflects on their path toward becoming more themselves.

This is it - we've reached the last of the Jeff Tweedy side-projects (the remaining albums in this series are all Tweedy solo/solo-ish), and it's the best one! THE SUN CAME OUT is the result of what happens when New Zealand pop music icon Neil Finn (Crowded House/Split Enz) gathers together 20 musicians at his studio in Auckland to record an album over 20 days, and what a result! Plus, Jared gives his hot take on THIS IS 40, and we introduce a possible podcast goldmine, John Lith-now: The John Lithgow Career Retrospective. Recommendations: Jared - THE ASK (a novel by Sam Lipsyte) Jason - Haley Heynderickx, Y La Bamba, and Begonia (here's the link to Jason's column in Phoenix Magazine that Jared didn't read) No social media, so it'd be great if you help the show by rating, reviewing, and recommending - cheers!

How can queerness guide us as we move through this liminal time period? How can queer ecology radically change our way of knowing? This week’s episode, initially aired in December of 2018, acknowledges that in order to expand ourselves to our fullest capacity, we must bend beyond the cultural and gender binaries that dominant society projects amongst us, to begin this process we need not look further than what has always been. Guided by culturally informed queer ancestral futurist dreams, Pinar and So Sinopoulos-Lloyd of Queer Nature explore how queering our awareness can dismantle the supremacist, ecocidal, and genocidal story we have found ourselves in. Queer Nature is an education and social sculpture project based on Arapaho, Ute, and Cheyenne territories that actively dreams into decolonially-informed queer ‘ancestral futurism’ through mentorship in place-based skills with awareness of post-industrial/globalized/ecocidal contexts. Co-envisioned by Pinar and So Sinopoulos-Lloyd, Queer Nature designs and facilitates nature-based workshops and multi-day immersions intended to be financially, emotionally, and physically accessible to LGBTQ2+ people and QTBIPOCs. Junot Díaz reads his short story "Aurora", with sound design and music composition from Y La Bamba. Junot Díaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Drown; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; and This Is How You Lose Her, a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist. He is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and PEN/O. Henry Award. A graduate of Rutgers College, Díaz is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and the Rudge and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the cofounder of Voices of Our Nation Workshop. Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet. Julia Mendiolea is my guest today to start off what some might call, "Season 3." I don't technically divide this show up into seasons, but I do take a break every summer. Julia and I go back. Wayyy back. About as far back as a musician in their twenties can go. We met the very first day of college as aspiring music majors at the University of Colorado at Denver. She moved to Denver from the small town of Green River, WY (coincidentally, I'm writing these very show notes in Green River) and was the first female guitar major that UCD had seen in two decades. In her time since that first day of school, she's worked as a guitarist, bassist, vocalist, teacher, bandmate, and creator of synthesizers! She is currently a touring member of Portland, OR based Latin indie alternative/experimental band, Y La Bamba, as well as a longtime member of Denver based synth/pop outfit, Inner Oceans. She also works at WMD (a manufacturer of music hardware including Modular Synthesizers, Guitar Pedals, and stand alone music instruments). In this episode, we chat about Julia's story, her musical projects, her journey through the education system, the end of the world and much, much more. This episode was originally supposed to air on June 4, but we decided to push it back one airing date to June 11 to join with our brothers and sisters in the music industry in support of Black Out Tuesday. #theshowmustbestopped My conversation this week was with Portland recording artist, Isabeau Waia'u Walker. Walker grew up in Hawaii and as a young adult made her way to Portland to pursue a career as a high school teacher and eventually a musician. In our interview, Isabeau talks about her teaching career, what drove her to play music full time, touring as a member of Y La Bamba, and growing up in a mixed-race family. Just a few weeks ago she put out her debut EP, Better Metric, which is absolutely wonderful and can be found anywhere you buy or stream music.
