Christa Doran, owner of Tuff Girl in Hamden Connecticut is a good friend of mine and a true leader! She speaks with passion and conviction, she believes in women speaking up for themselves and taking up space. What makes Christa a leader like few others is her willingness to show her vulnerability and share her struggles. This is something I so very much admire about her and what make her a leader to me.
Kevin Eastman worked with the NBA and college level Basketball players for over 40 years. In this time he learned a lot about what makes the best, the best. I had the pleasure of seeing him speak at a seminar and read his book "Why the best are the best". I thought he was a natural pick to be interviewed on leadership. Each one of them have distinct qualities that I believe makes them wonderful leaders. Whether this means as a business owner, in your own training, as a manager, as a speaker, being an icon in the fitness industry or whatever else we are looking to accomplish, we are all leaders.
In the final podcast of my mental health series, I wanted to have a discussion around medication. There is still a great deal of stigma and fear around the use of medication to help out with these issues. If someone has a physical problem, no one looks at it as a weakness to use mediation for help but when it comes to mental health it can be viewed as a weakness to use medication. For many, medication is not the right path, but I want to help open the doors to help others understand how meds can make our lives a little easier.
Keith is one of our most trusted physical therapists that we work with at Achieve. You would never know he experiences symptoms of depression when you meet him. My next series is all about mental health! I talk to people about their own personal experiences as well as experts in the field about ways to help manage challenges dealing with depression, anxiety, OCD, and disordered eating habits.
Christa Doran is hands down one of the strongest women I know! As the owner of Tuff Girl Fitness in Hamden Connecticut, she has dedicated her mission to helping other women feel and understand their full potential and power through strength of body and mind. A few weeks back, Chirsta and I got into a conversation about the lack of representation in the leadership of the fitness industry. In this podcast we discuss why we think this happens and what we can do to help change this for the future.
Next up on the Strong Women's Series is Hannah Rettler who is a Women's Transformation coach. Hannah was brave enough to leave the security of her corporate desk job over a year ago to start her own business. Her goal is to help women bring out their inner strength and to feel unstuck. In this episode we talk a lot about fear and how it holds us back in our career, our relationships, or goals, our physical strength and all parts of our lives. Hannah's excitement and joy for what she does shines through in this podcast along with all of the content she produces!
The Renegades are back for the Strong Women Series! These women don't just show strength on the field and in the gym but in their relationships with one another and their dedication to their goals. In this episode we talk about the road to the Super Bowl, what was different from last season to this season and some of their favorite moments. These ladies are an inspiration to all!
Second on the Strong Women's Series is Rachel Cosgrove. As one of the original OG women in the strength and conditioning world, it was only natural that I have Rachel on for this series. Rachel is known for being strong in the business world as well as in her own physical training. In this episode I wanted specifically to talk about how her training goals have transitioned from dance, to powerlifting, to triathlons to now OCR training! Rachel is a high level tough competitor and I love hearing about her accomplishments and future goals!
First up in the Strong Women series is Geralyn Coppersmith. I first met Geralyn at the Perform Better conference in Rhode Island and I was immediately impressed with her excitement and passion for the industry. Geralyn has decades of experience in the industry holding positions as the National Director of Education at Equinox, the Global Director of Performance and Fitness at Nike and the Chief Talent Officer at Fly wheel. I so much enjoyed hearing Geralyn's advice for a strong career in the fitness industry! My biggest take away was to focus on the now and do what you do the best way you know how! Thank you Geralyn!
Purposeful Strength has returned! In this episode I talk about why I took a bit of a break from the podcast and what the podcast will look lie moving forward.
In this episode, Erin Brown and I discuss the topic of sexuality and nudity as it relates to the empowerment of women. To hear more from Erin brown head to here website at: https://www.iamerinbrown.info
In this episode I wanted to discuss some thoughts I had after attending a fitness conference. I wanted to invite us all, including myself, to work on looking at being more inclusive in the community we serve, the information we look towards, where we put our money and who we place on display or look to as leaders. Fitness does not fit in one box and the leaders in our fitness industry should also not fit into one box. Let me know your thoughts and feelings!
Episode 72: Period Mindset with Veronica McNelis by Sarah Polacco
In this podcast Veronica McNelis educates me on the specific phases of the menstrual cycle and how each phase affects an individual's hormones and therefore also their training cycle. This is an important discussion to talk about as women often feel shamed and made to feel embarrassed about this topic. Men and women both need to be a part of the conversation and be made to feel like its not a gross or disgusting thing to talk about but something that we can freely talk about. To learn more about Veronica and what she offers, check out here website here: https://linktr.ee/veronicamcnelis
In this podcast I review a list of books that have helped me create the foundation for my coaching knowledge. I broke them up into categories of 1)Training and Technique, 2)Nutrition, 3) Mindset/Personal Development, and 4) Customer Service/Professional Development/Management. In this business, we are forever students. We always need to keep learning. Hopefully this list helps you start or help to enhance your coaching knowledge!
Samantha and Tracy are back for Part 2! These Authors of the blog Fit is a Feminist issue and the book Fit at Midlife are back again to discuss the topic of body image. We talked about how the concept of body image changed for them as they aged and why certain body image thoughts come about. The conclusion we came to is that it really doesn't matter what your outward appearance is, we all deal with the same challenges and internal difficulties with body image and if we can all be kinder to one and other, and to ourselves, we would be a whole lot better off!
Samantha Brennan and Tracy Isaac decided two year ago, before each of their 50th birthdays, that they were going to become the fittest they had ever been! They wanted to document the process through a blog and titled it, Fitness is a Feminist Issue. As philosophers by trade, they saw this fitness journey not only as taking a physical challenge but a way in which to examine fitness as it relates to feminist issues. The blog became so popular that they decided to turn their journey into a book titled "Fit at Midlife". In this podcast we explore a lot of the pieces of their journey; how their definition of fitness has changed and many of the feminist issues they have explored along the way. To hear more from these ladies you can check out the links to read their blog and or purchase their book. https://fitisafeministissue.com https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1771641673/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1771641673&linkCode=as2&tag=fitfeminists-20&linkId=072691ef76b3aba1383bfdaca70b2176

We talk about what made them want to get involved in this sport, their trials and tribulations through training and how they felt competing in a very male dominated space. One thing I wanted to highlight in this podcast, is that these women are multifaceted. Powerlifting is not their full time job. They have other responsibilities, goals and passions AND they can participate in powerlifting too! These women are also hilarious so get ready to laugh. Enjoy!

Ted Andrews, my friend and coworker talks to me about his experience dealing with disordered eating. This is a topic that is widely misunderstood and often times men are left forgotten about or stigmatized in this area. Ted explains how his disordered eating came from avoiding confronting other issues going on in his life and how much seeking out help, and opening up about his problems helped him overcome this challenge.
