We're still waiting to hear what will happen to JayCee Cooper, the Minnesota transgender athlete who sued USA Powerlifting for discrimination in 2021 after the organization barred her from competing. The Minnesota Supreme Court announced in July that it will review her case. USA powerlifting maintains she was barred because of her physiology, not because of her gender identity. It's within this environment that a south Minneapolis gym will host a deadlifting event in support of transgender inclusion in sport. The event is Oct. 19 at Solcana Fitness in south Minneapolis. It's called “Drop Deadlift Gorgeous.” For more, Event Director Max Poessnecker joined Minnesota Now to talk about the inspiration behind the event.
As political attacks on trans athletes escalate, trans powerlifters are continuing to push their sport forward. In this episode, Imara talks with two competitive powerlifters who are breaking records and fighting for their right to compete. First, she's joined by two-time national champion, JayCee Cooper, who outlines her years-long legal battle with USA Powerlifting over her experience of discrimination by the organization. Next she talks with the World's Strongest Trans Man, Scott Percy, about what that title means to him and how he hopes to inspire other transmasculine people to compete.Make sure to check out TransLash Media's new show The Mess: Imara's Guide to Our Political Hellscape. A transgender powerlifter who is a biological male won a discrimination lawsuit against USA Powerlifting. JayCee Cooper filed a 2021 lawsuit against USA Powerlifting, and a judge has ruled that USA Powerlifting did discriminate against Cooper by not allowing Cooper to compete against women. No one WANTS to talk about transgenderism, but it's being pushed in front of people and forcibly shoved down their throats. For example, Always ran a commercial featuring a trans man because men can have periods too. The insanity is becoming so entwined in the fabric of our society that reality is meaningless. LGBT groups in New York City are furious that the Staten Island St. Patrick's Day Parade will once again not allow LGBT pride groups to march under LGBT banners. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced that he will boycott the parade in protest. St. Patrick's Day is supposed to be about the Irish, but apparently that's no longer the case. We're joined by Ezra Levant, Rebel Commander and host of “The Ezra Levant Show” on Rebel News+, to discuss the case of Pastor Derek Reimer, who remains locked behind bars in Calgary. Angela Yvonne Davis was named to the FBI's Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list for her supposed involvement in the armed seizure of a Marin County Courthouse in California during which four people died, including a judge, earlier that year. Davis is a reparations advocate that received some bad news. JayCee Cooper, a transgender athlete, won a discrimination case against USA Powerlifting this week after the federation banned her from competing in female events .With Cooper's victory comes a mandate the federation "cease and desist from all unfair discriminatory practices" because of sexual orientation and gender identity. The mayor of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., Paul Kanitra, has a theory on what may be behind the mysterious string of whale deaths that has left officials speechless. Since offshore wind energy development began in December, the region has witnessed 18 whale deaths – a severe uptick that is not a "coincidence," the New Jersey mayor argues. In this episode of The Gender Justice Brief, Erin Hart, Senator Erin Maye Quade, and legal director Jess Braverman return to discuss the groundbreaking case of Cooper versus USA Powerlifting, which has set a precedent for trans inclusion in sports. JayCee Cooper, Gender Justice's first client to join the podcast, shares her experience and why she brought the case against USA Powerlifting, highlighting the ongoing attacks against the trans community. The case sheds light on the importance of transgender inclusion in sports. The podcast delves into how it will help educate people and break down misinformation perpetuated in the media. With the help of co-counsel Nichols Kaster and Premo Frank, as well as national partners like Athlete Ally and Inclusion Playbook, Gender Justice was able to gain support for trans inclusion in sports and set an example for other states to follow. This victory emphasizes that trans inclusion is essential for the growth and success of women's sports. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. For the second straight year, Pull For Pride co-headed by Breanna Diaz and trans powerlifter JayCee Cooper have put together a scholarship program for LGBTQ athlete seeking aid for their pursuit of strength sports. Training, equipment and competition fees can be an expensive proposition for those seeking to compete in the sport and that often prices out many with potential and many other seeking the physical and emotional health and wellness benefits. In 2020, the opening year, the scholarship had a $2,000 budget to give grants out. Six athletes were able to get aid, there where more that the group wanted give to,. In 2021, the scholarship fund grew to over $10,000 in donations, many coming from other grassroots athletes.. The grants were awarded in November to 24 titans of all ages, races, and identities. Three grant winners, D'Auriel Epiphany, Taylor Selman and Afton Brooks join Karleigh Webb for one of most trans joyful conversations since this podcast became a podcast. All three are strong, ambitious, queer, and had a lot to say about a lot of subjects especially how sports and fitness bring them that elusive, beautiful trans joy. Podcast Episode 4: The Attack on Nonconformity in Athletics Pt. 1 (The Rant) *Explicit Language* I’m very excited to get into this episode because I’ve always wanted to unpack human variance especially how it shows up in relation to gender identity/expression. Visible differences in the human expression often cause people to be othered, discriminated against, pathologized, brutalized etc. Right now we are seeing the attack on human variance & non conformity in the world of women’s sports which is racist, sexist, transphobic and an overall gross violation of human rights. In particular this episode will highlight the stories of Caster Semenya & JayCee Cooper. Both Caster & JayCee have been thrusted into the spotlight and are helping to undo so dreadful policies that limit certain bodies (in particular trans and gender non conforming folks) from competing as their true selves in women’s sports. **Update** As of June 3, 2019 the Swiss Court temporarily suspends new IAAF rules per Caster Semenya's legal team. Therefore, Caster will not need to take testosterone-reducing medication to compete. Caster Semenya: is a South African Olympic track runner and two time gold medalist in the 800 meter. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a regulation that will require some female track athletes with naturally-elevated testosterone levels to lower those levels with drugs or surgery, if they want to compete in certain women's events on the international stage. JayCee Cooper: is a USA Powerlifter who was banned from competing in the Olympic Women’s Division because she identifies as a trans woman. Some additional subjects discussed in this Episode: **racism, gender essentialism and trans hatred in sports** **Why are we targeting folks in sports who are already so deeply targeted in other areas of society? **Mack Beggs trans man wrestler high school student (forced to wrestle against women) was already medically transitioning. Texas sanctions women’s wrestling. 2016 Texas Policy determining gender based on birth certificates for sports in colleges. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/feb/25/transgender-wrestler-mack-beggs-wins-texas-girls-title **Andraya Yearwood trans femme youth athlete track Connecticut. https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/feb/24/terry-miller-andraya-yearwood-transgender-sprinter/ **Othering of trans women (trans women are women PERIOD!)There is no evidence to suggest that that trans are stealing anything. If you are good at the sport it is your athleticism which has nothing to do with the other athlete of their identity. **Why the mere existence of transwomen creates so much fear in society. **The conflation of body parts and gender **Sexist notion: that anyone assigned male at birth will automatically beat anyone assigned female at birth. **This informs how we discuss trans athletes, intersex athletes and women in general. **Testosterone not the “male sex hormone,” nor is it the key to athletic performance. **There is no such thing as *looking* transgender. **High profile female athletes (like Martina Navratilova) weaponize that notion and if gives more credence to the notion in the first place. It’s a false criticism of women’s sports in general. ***Notion of this influx of cis men posing as transwomen to gain unfair advantages in competitions. Also carries similar narratives to this fear of cis men posing as trans women taking over bathroom spaces. “In the US, there’s not a single reported instance of this kind of voyeurism occurring in states with legal protections for trans people.” https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/5/13/17938102/transgender-people-bathrooms-locker-rooms-schools
